OBITUARIES:

CORRECTION:  In the obituary for Dallas Leroy Meacham of Newell in the Feb. 24 issue 
of the Leader, Mr. Meacham's daughter, Patricia McManus of Woodland, was incorrectly 
identified as Patricia Fredriksen.  Mr. Meacham died Feb. 19.

Lura Henry Hudson

   (LAFAYETTE) Funeral services for Lura Henry Hudson, 78, of LaFayette, formerly of 
Five Points, were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
the Rev. Yancey Sanders and the Rev. Vernon Brown officiating.  Burial was at Mt. 
Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Hudson died Monday, Feb. 22, at LaFayette Nursing Home.
   She was born in Heard County, Ga., on Sept. 2, 1920, daughter of the Rev. William H. 
and Susie Jane Henry.  She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwyn Tenell Hudson.
   Survivors include two sons, Don Hudson of Auburn and Jack Hudson of Panama City, 
Fla., and two grandsons.
   Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity or church.
   Pallbearers were Jim Robinson, George Robinson, Cecil Crenshaw, Dawson Day, Drue 
Steverson, Greg Farrar and Mack Holderfield.

Felicia Videria Newell

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Felicia Videria Newell, 69, of Carrollton, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Feb. 23, 1999, at Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton.
   She was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late Mancel F. 
Lester and Emily Lea Rice Lester.  Mrs. Newell was a homemaker and a member of 
Abilene Baptist Church.  She also was preceded in death by her husband Johnny Harold 
Newell Sr.
   She is survived by a son, Johnny Newell of Carrollton; two daughters, Debra Phillips of 
Reading, Pa., and Janie Newell of Opelika; two sisters, Lorene Harper of Jacksonville and 
Faye Hall of Newnan, Ga.; and two brothers, James Lester of Carrollton and J. D. Lester 
of LaGrange, Ga.
   Graveside services were Thursday, Feb. 25, at Abilene Baptist Church Cemetery, with 
the Rev. H. T. Henderson officiating.  Music was by J. N. and Onie Baxter.
   Arrangements were by Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel, Carrollton.

Awbrey Etchison

   (VALLEY) Awbrey M. Etchison, 70, of Valley died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mr. Etchison was born in Randolph County on Sept. 16, 1928, son of the late Sally 
Causey Etchison and James Allen Etchison.  He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army 
and served in the Korean War and Vietnam.  He had been a resident of the Valley area for 
the past 26 years and was a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Latha Pinkard Etchison; two daughters, Kathy Marie 
Etchison of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Kimberly Walker of Lanett; two sons, Dexter Wayne 
Etchison of Ft. Richardson, Alaska, and Dennis Ray Pilgrim of Lanett; three brothers, Joe 
Cecil Etchison of Randolph County, William H. Etchison of Indiana and James Wallace 
Etchison of Illinois; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Happy Valley Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, 
Feb. 27, with graveside services at 3:30 at Randolph Memory Gardens.  The Rev. Floyd 
Aikens, the Rev. Franklin Foster and the Rev. Rusty Letson officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Happy Valley Baptist Church Building Fund.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Angela J. Carroll

   (VALLEY) Angela J. Carroll, 32, of Valley died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital Valley.
   Mrs. Carroll is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Stewart; a son, Brandon Carroll of 
Valley; her mother, Dorothy Lee Windsor of Valley; her stepfather, Herbert Windsor of 
Valley; four sisters, Denise Traylor of Woodland, Julia Norred and Deborah Taylor of 
Valley, and Rebecca Barber of LaGrange, Ga.; and three brothers, Michael Chase and 
Jeffery Chase of Lee County and Sam Windsor of Valley.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Valley.  The Rev. Floyd 
Aikens officiated.
   Mrs. Carroll was born Feb. 26, 1966, in Roanoke.  Memorial donations may be made to 
the Fibromyalgia Support Group at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

   (ROANOKE) Josh Watts, 69, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Central 
Alabama Veterans Health Care System, Montgomery.
   Mr. Watts was a member of Faith, Hope and Charity Full Gospel Baptist Church, 
Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Climmie Watts of Roanoke; four sons, Willie Smith of 
Atlanta, John Lewis Houston of Decatur, Ga., Sidney Houston of Lithonia, Ga., and Larry 
Houston of Waynesville, Mo.; eight daughters, Mrs. Ida Alexander of Roanoke, Ms. Pearl 
Thomason of Decatur, Ga., Ms. Jean Heflin of Johnson, S.C., Ms. Patsy Winston, Miss 
Mary Robertson, Miss Minnie Robertson and Ms. Lillie Owensby of Wedowee and Ms. 
Shanteria Flowers of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Lounora Bell of Roanoke and Mrs. Rosie 
Winn of Ohio; 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, 
relatives and friends.
   Services were Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at Faith, Hope and Charity Full Gospel 
Baptist Church, with George Silmon, pastor, officiating.  Interment was in  Skyview 
Memorial Gardens, Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Carey Bailey

   (Woodland)  Funeral services for Carey Bailey, 68, of Woodland were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Pineywoods Church of Christ, with Bro. Thomas W. Wortham 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Bailey died Thursday, Feb. 25, at his residence following an extended illness.
   He was born in Randolph County on July 21, 1930, son of Oran Patrick and Ruby 
Bailey.  He had been employed as a mechanic and was a veteran of the Korean War and a 
member of Pineywoods Church of Christ.
   Survivors include his wife, Marie Wortham Bailey of Woodland; two sons, Wortham 
Bailey and Donald A. Bailey of Wedowee; one sister, Margaret Henne of Pittsburgh, PA; 
three brothers, Chester Bailey of Austell, GA, Floyd Bailey of College Park, GA, and 
Olton Bailey of Hapeville, GA; and two grandchildren.
   Memorial donations may be made to Pineywoods Church of Christ.
   Pallbearers were Roy Doug Benefield, Kenneth Wortham, Winston Benefield, Josh 
Bailey, Mike Bailey and Junior Wortham.

Frances Opal Brown

   (Woodland) Funeral services for Frances Opal "Big Mama" Brown, 93, of Woodland 
were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb 27, 1999, at Mount Carmel Church of Christ, with Bro. W. 
C. Cofield officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Brown died Thursday, Feb 25, at her residence following a short illness.
   She was born in Randolph County Aug. 7, 1905, daughter of Jay and Pearl Kirby.  She 
was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Carmel Church of Christ.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Charlie Dew Brown; three sons, Cecil Brooks Brown, J. Q. Brown 
and Buford Jerome Brown; one grandson and a daughter-in-law.
   Survivors include three daughters, Beatrice Daniel, Peggy Eidson and Mona Herren of 
Woodland; five sons, Charles Kenneth Brown of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Jasper Curwood 
Brown of Great Falls, Mont., Carey James Brown of Swansea, S.C., Dan Brown of 
Graham and Paul Brown of Woodland; two sisters, Macie Lester of Jacksonville, Fla., and 
Loma Chase of Durham, NC; one brother, Ishmael Kirby of Woodland;  35 grandchildren 
and 51 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

William Ceaph Harvel

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for William Ceaph Harvel, 88, of Wedowee were at 
4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Leven's Baptist Church with the Revs. Leron Murphy 
and Harold Bonner officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Harvel died Thursday, Feb. 25, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   He was born in Randolph County on Sept. 7, 1910, son of Loge L. and Mollie Ann 
Harvel.  He had worked at Anniston Army Depot and for the State of Alabama as an 
equipment operator, and was a member of Cool Springs United Methodist Church.  He 
was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtice Harvel.
   Survivors include two daughters, Marylene Nelson of Wedowee and Reba D. Rampey 
of Bremen, Ga.; two sons, Billy R. Harvel of Roanoke and Bobby G. Harvel Sr. of 
Alexander City; ten grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great- 
grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be floral or donations can be made to Leven's Baptist 
Church, 4514 Old Hwy 431, Wedowee, AL 36278.
   Pallbearers were Barry Nelson, Keith Rampey, Wayne Rampey, Billy Harvel Jr., Bob 
Harvel Jr. and Todd Harvel.  Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters.
   Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Roy Lyles Browning

   (VALLEY) Roy Lyles Browning, 80, of Valley died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mr. Browning was a native of Randolph County, born March 3, 1918.  He was a retired 
employee of West Point Stevens Fairfax Mill.  He was of the Nazarene faith.
   Survivors include a son, R. J. Browning of Valley; two sisters, Eula Maudie Browning 
and Norene B. Cannon of Valley; a brother, Charlie Browning of Valley; three 
grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.  Mr. Browning was the son of the late Itela 
Cavela Adamson Browning and Thomas N. Browning.
   Funeral services will be at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, with burial in Union Hill Cemetery in Randolph County.  
The Rev. Donnie Browning will officiate.
   Arrangements are by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home of Valley.

Lewis Houston

   (WADLEY) Lewis Houston, 81, of Wadley died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive United Methodist 
Church, Dickert, with the Rev. Hollis Boykins officiating.  Burial was in the church's 
adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include a son, the Rev. Willie Rufus Houston of Atlanta; a daughter, Mary 
Ann Finley of Roanoke; a brother, James Houston of Amityville, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; 
nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and six sisters-in-law.  He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Laura Houston; his wife, Lorene Elizabeth 
Houston; and a son, Curtis Houston.
   Mr. Houston was a faithful member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Dickert.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Don Meyer

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Don Meyer, 61, of Roanoke were at 10 a.m. 
Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Maxwell 
officiating.  Burial was at Bethel Baptist Church.
   Mr. Meyer died Saturday, Feb. 27, at his residence following an extended illness.
   Mr. Meyer was born in Denver, Colo., July 3, 1937, son of Ernest Ray and Margaret 
Snider.  He was retired from the Roanoke Police Department and was a member of 
Roanoke Country Club and Bethel Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Louise Meyer of Roanoke; his father, Ray Snider of Denver; 
and three step-daughters, Sylvia Sims of LaGrange, Sharon Clonts of Riverdale, Ga., and 
Liz Adcock of Mobile.

James Madison Wilkins

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for James Madison Wilkins, 85, of Wadley were Sunday, 
Feb. 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Womack 
officiating.  Burial was in Wadley City Cemetery.
   Mr. Wilkins died Friday, Feb. 26, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   A lifelong Wadley resident, Mr. Wilkins was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Chambers County, 
son of James Terrell and Nancy Carter Wilkins.  Mr. Wilkins was owner and operator of 
Wilkins Nursery and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Wadley.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Jim Hardy Wilkins of Wadley; three daughters, 
Melinda Miller of Montgomery, Dorcas Hammrick of Duluth, Ga., and Phyllis Kenady of 
Wetumpka; one son, David Wilkins of Wadley; six grandchildren and one great- 
grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Randall Kenady, Michael Hammrick, Lynn Hammrick, Lee Tarver, 
Dewell Kenady and Scott Miller.

Ray Eugene Moon

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ray Eugene Moon, 64, of Roanoke, were at 2 p.m. 
Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Moon Jr., the 
Rev. Wally Rezendes and the Rev. Frank Foster officiating.  Burial was in Randolph 
Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Moon died Sunday, Feb. 28, at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
   Mr. Moon was born in Randolph County Sept. 22, 1934, son of James M. and Hattie B. 
Moon.  He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and 
was a member of DAV Chapter 56, the Air Force Sergeants Association, and the Retired 
Enlisted Association.  He was a Nazarene by faith.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents and a brother, John W. "Willie" Moon.
   Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Moon of Roanoke; a daughter, Lucy Fincher of 
Roanoke; two sons, Ray Moon Jr. of Roanoke and Dan Moon of Palmetto, Ga.; four 
sisters, Sarah Kitchens and Curtis Noles of Roanoke, Mary Williams of Pensacola, Fla., 
and Shirley Youngblood of Troy; four brothers, Milton Moon, Hugh Moon, and Travis 
Moon of Roanoke and Malcolm Moon of Union Springs; and five grandchildren.
   Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association, 7320 Greenville 
Ave., Dallas, TX 75231, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P. O. Box 1000, 
Memphis, TN 38148.

Bobby Holley

   (ROANOKE) Bobby Holley, 65, of Roanoke died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at George H. 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mr. Holley was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Bacon Level.
   Survivors include six children, Gregory K. Holley of Opelika and Barbara Slaughter, 
Linda Rowland, Gloria Wright, Sara Billingslea and Teresa Reid of Roanoke; 
two brothers, Ed Holley of Chicago, Ill., and Eugene Holley of Newark, Del.; 
18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three aunts and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Services for Mr. Holley were Thursday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist 
Church, Bacon Level, with the Rev. Eric Ware officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Rosie Lee Houston

   (WEDOWEE) Rosie Lee Houston, 90, of Wedowee died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, 
at Roanoke Health Care Center, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Monday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Houston was a homemaker and an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, 
where she served many years as secretary of the Missionary Society.  She enjoyed note 
singings, often traveling to various churches to take part.
   Survivors include her husband, John Wesley Houston of Wedowee; four sons, John W. 
Houston and Benny Houston of Wedowee, Guy William Houston of Atlanta and Leney 
Wayne Houston of Birmingham; three daughters, Cynthia Woodgett, Ruthie Wright and 
Freddie Mae Weaver of Wedowee; two brothers, Roy Minnifield of Wedowee and Dr. 
Warren Minnifield of Roanoke; 32 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and 
12 great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Lula Bell Minnifield; 
three sons, Bobby Houston, Harvey Manley Houston and Leroy Houston; and a daughter, 
Myrtie Herring.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Dallas Laverne Lipham

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Dallas Laverne Lipham, 74, of Wedowee were 
Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at noon at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Warren Wilder officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Lipham died Saturday, March 6, at his residence following an extended illness.
   Mr. Lipham was a native of Randolph County, born March 23, 1924, son of Ezra and 
Sletie Carter Lipham.  He was retired from Greyhound Bus Lines after 34 years of service.  
He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of Bear Creek United Methodist 
Church.  He was also a member of the DAV and recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple 
Heart.
   Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Molly Jane Bass Lipham; a daughter, Martha 
Jane Schlicker of Sharpsburg, Ga.; one son, Jimmy Lipham of Lakeland, Fla.; two 
brothers, Lavelle Lipham of Ashland and Jack Lipham of LaGrange, Ga.; and four 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Manuel Norell, Mike Bass, Joe Bass, Paul Shelnutt, Russell Bass and 
Roy Cummings.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Ambrous Mac Dodgen Jr.

   (STANDING ROCK) Ambrous Mac Dodgen Jr., 81, of 3155 County Rd. 278, Five 
Points, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga.
   Mr. Dodgen was born Sept. 4, 1917, in Chambers County, son of the late Ambrous Mac 
Sr. and Kate Towles Dodgen.  He was a lifelong member and music director of Standing 
Rock United Methodist Church.  Mr. Dodgen was an army Air Corps veteran of World 
War II and retired after 42 years of service with Newman Construction Company.  He was 
the current president of the Standing Rock Community Club.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha Dodgen of Standing Rock; a daughter, Mrs. 
Sharon Dodgen McLaughlin of LaGrange, Ga.; a son, Johnny Mac Dodgen of Standing 
Rock; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   A funeral service was at 3 p.m. EST Monday, March 8, at Standing Rock United 
Methodist Church, with the Revs. Paul Messer, Vernon Brown and Ed Grooms 
officiating.  Entombment was in the family mausoleum in the church cemetery.
   Those desiring may make contributions in memory of Mr. Dodgen to the Cemetery Fund 
of Standing Rock United Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Stiffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Marie A. Carson

   (VALLEY) Marie A. Carson, 77, of Valley died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at her son's 
residence in Opelika.
   Mrs. Carson was born in Randolph County June 22, 1921.  She was a long-time resident 
of Fairfax and was very active in Fairfax United Methodist Church and Order of the 
Eastern Star, Langdale chapter, where she was a past Worthy Matron.  She was a 
homemaker and a former employee of West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill.  She was 
known for her local charity work.
   Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Carson of Atlanta; a son, Brad Carson of Opelika; 
and a sister, Lera Townley of Roanoke.
   Funeral services were at Fairfax United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. EST on Monday, 
March 8, with graveside services at 2:30 p.m. EST at Forrester's Chapel Cemetery in 
Randolph County.  Dr. Jerry Herston and Pastor Zenus Windsor officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to Fairfax United Methodist Church in her memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

David Norred

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Funeral services for David Norred, 29, of Carrollton, Ga., were 
Sunday, March 7, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. at Paran Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gerald 
Sheppard, Bev Olds, Evett Guyton and Padgett Nelson officiating.  Burial was at Carroll 
Memory Gardens in Carrollton.
   Mr. Norred died Thursday, March 4, in Roanoke.
   A former Roanoke resident, Mr. Norred was born Nov. 6, 1969, son of Olin Benford 
and Barbara Ann Stephens Norred.  He was a member of Buck Trails Hunting Club and 
Big Oak Archery Club.  He worked as a store clerk.
   Survivors include his wife, Jeri Lynn Olvey Norred of Carrollton; one daughter, Stacey 
Lynn Norred of Roanoke; one sister, Pam Moore of Roanoke; and one brother, James 
Norred of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Tim Pike, Tim Moore, Alan Moore, Bobby Smith, Eric Howe and 
Brandon Moore.

   (WOODLAND) Misty Racquel Baker, 21, of Woodland died Friday, March 5, 1999.
   Miss Baker was a member of First Baptist Church, Bowdon, Ga.
   Survivors include her mother, Janet Baker of Woodland; her father, Michael Minnifield; 
one brother, Shallon Baker; grandparents, Sue Nell Boykin and Maggie and Jessie 
Minnifield; a great-grandmother, Eula Mae Baker; a great-grandfather, Carl Green; and a 
host of aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.
   Services for Miss Baker were Tuesday, March 9, at 1 p.m. CST at Union Hill Baptist 
Church, Woodland, with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Interment was at Mt. Carmel 
United Methodist Church, Woodland.

Joyce Clyde Strain

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Mr. Joyce Clyde Strain, 88, of Woodland will be at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Oak Grove Church of Christ, with W. C. Cofield 
and Wilbur Bass officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Strain died Monday, March 8, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Mr. Strain is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Strain of Woodland; two daughters, Pat 
Windham of Pensacola, Fla., and Marie Strain of Weaverville, N.C.; one son, Mike Strain 
of Roanoke; one grandson; and two sisters, Icle Watts of Talladega and Ravinelle Kirby of 
West Point, Ga.
   Pallbearers will be Lloyd Stewart, Jim Tom Willingham, Ricky Murphy, Barrett 
Shelnutt, Ted Strain and Phil Stewart.
   Mr. Strain was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County.  He was born July 19, 
1910, son of John and Laura Moon Strain.  He was a farmer and a member of Oak Grove 
Church of Christ.  He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the army.
   Mr. Strain will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services.

   (Roanoke)  Funeral services for Earmis M. "John" Kirby, 91, of Roanoke were Friday, 
March 5, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. S. T. Janney and 
Gerald Sikes officiating.  Burial was in Rock Stand Congregational Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Kirby died Wednesday, March 3, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Kirby was born March 3, 1908, son of Clay and Cora 
Delmare Kirby.  He was a self-employed farmer and a member of Rock Stand 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include two sons, Derrel Kirby of Wadley and Jimmy Kirby of LaGrange, GA; 
four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Anthony Barrett, Lindle Williams, Wayne Kirby, Wayne Brown, Kevin

Ben Moore Handley, Jr.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ben Moore Handley Jr., 75, of Roanoke, were 
Monday, March 15, 1999, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Roanoke, 
with the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mr. Handley died Saturday March 13, at West Georgia Medical Center following a 
short illness.
   Mr. Handley was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, born April 6, 1923, 
son of Ben Moore Handley Sr. and Mary Will Chewning Handley.  Before retirement he 
and his brother owned and operated Handley Distributing Co. Inc. for a number of years.  
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Roanoke.  Mr. Handley was 
preceded in death by his parents; a sister Rosa Handley Hicks; and a brother, Guy Harwell 
Handley II.
   Survivors include his wife, Dorris Boyd Handley of Roanoke, a daughter, Loretta Baker 
of Dothan; a son, Ben Handley III of Birmingham; five grandchildren; and three sisters, 
Leita Lane of Knoxville, Tenn., Sara Crook of Montgomery, and Jane Dow of West 
Hartford, Conn.
   Honorary pallbearers were the Young Men's Bible Class of First United Methodist 
Church of Roanoke.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Charlie Will Bolt, 71, of Roanoke were Friday,

Bobby Kirby and Clifford DeLee officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Bolt died suddenly at Randolph County Hospital on Wednesday, March 10.
   A life-long Randolph County resident, Mr. Bolt was born Jan. 17, 1928, son of Lee and 
Nina Wilder Bolt.  He had been employed with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
   Survivors include his wife, Jessie Banks Bolt of Roanoke; three daughters, Sharon Bolt 
Bowen of LaGrange, Ga., Penny Bolt Butler of Whitesburg, Ga., and Julie Bolt Eady of 
Lineville; one son, Jerry Bolt of Roanoke; two sisters, Mavis Pike of Roanoke and Clois 
Towler of Rock Mills; two brothers, Loyd Bolt of Roanoke and R. C. Bolt of West Palm 
Beach Fla.; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Charlie Ford 'Bill' Spears

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Charlie Ford "Bill" Spears, 75, of Roanoke were

   Mr. Spears died Thursday, March 11, at his residence.
   Mr. Spears was a native of Randolph County, born Oct. 23, 1923, son of Alonza and 
Annie Mae McDonald Spears.  He had served as Randolph County tax assessor for six 
years and served in the army in World War II.  He was a member of Highway First 
Congregational Methodist Church, where he served as a deacon for 40 years, as past 
president of the church executive board and church leader for 25 years.
   Survivors include his wife, Avel Allen Spears of Roanoke; three daughters, Brenda 
Benefield of Munford, Joy Rollins of Roanoke and Marlene Lindley of Wedowee; one son, 
Gary Spears of Roanoke; two sisters, Katie Andrews and Alma Cantrell of LaGrange, Ga.; 
one brother, Gaines Spears of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

and Allie Mae Mansel Fannin.  He had retired from Alabama Power Company.  Mr. 
Fannin was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Mike Fannin.
   Survivors include his wife, Sara Weaver Fannin of Roanoke; six daughters, Angie 
Norred, Tammy Mitchum, Stephanie Fannin and Tiffanie Fannin of Roanoke, Amy Logan

Evelyn L. Hannah

   (MACON, Ga.) Evelyn L. Hannah, 94, widow of Joseph E. Hannah and sister of the late 
Mrs. Ben Rives Sr., died in Macon, Ga. on Monday, March 15, 1999.
   Surviving are one niece, Susanna Rives Nicholson of Athens, Ga., and one nephew, 
Dr. Benjamin A. Rives of Macon, Ga., and their children.
   Mrs. Hannah was born in Coweta County, Ga.  She was a much loved kindergarten 
teacher in LaFayette and Roanoke and after her marriage in LaGrange and Albany, Ga.
   Graveside services will be Thursday, March 18, in Thomaston, Ga., at 11 a.m.  The 
family requests no flowers be sent, suggesting instead that memorial gifts be sent to

   (GRAHAM) Graveside services for Fairy Augusta Butler Kerr, 87, of Graham were

   Mrs. Kerr died Sunday, March 14, at Colonial Pines Nursing Home following an 
extended illness.
   Mrs. Kerr was born May 27, 1911, daughter of William Alfred Butler and Laura Elaine 
Copeland Butler.  She was a native of Randolph County and a housemaker.  She was a 
member of Pine Hill Christian Church.
   Mrs. Kerr is survived by her daughter, Olivia Iverson of Graham; a granddaughter; a 
great grandchild; one sister, Floyce Smith of Heflin; and a half-brother, William Alfred 
Butler Jr. of Anniston.

Beach Textiles and was a member of Rock Mills First Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two daughters, Betty Steward of Roanoke and Sara Lee of Newnan, 
Ga.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Earnestine Parker of Chattanooga, Tenn., Evelyn Starks of Bowdon, Ga., Rosetta Heard

of Wedowee; one son, Robert Earl Smith; two sisters, Christine Warren of Cleveland,

32 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents,

   Mrs. Smith traveled extensively throughout the North Alabama Conference of the 
United Methodist Church.  She was an active member of Union Chapel United Methodist 
Church, where she worked with the choir and youth departments.

   (THOMASTON, Ga.) Funeral services for Robert W. "R.W." Breed, 90, of Thomaston, 
Ga., formerly of Roanoke, were Sunday March 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum

   Mr. Breed died Friday, March 19, at Providence Health Care in Thomaston.
   A Chambers County native, Mr. Breed was born March 26, 1908, son of Fountain B. 
and Cartie Jane McCullough Breed.  He was a member of North Main Congregational 
Christian Church and had been employed with Handley Mills.  His wife, Tommie Lou 
Brown Breed, preceded him in death on March 10, 1999.
   Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Charles F. Eichelberger Sr. of

   (LANETT) Linda Lee Lane, 61, of Lanett died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at her 
residence.

Lanett; and her mother, Elizabeth Phillips Lee of LaFayette.
   Funeral services were Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. EST at Lanett First United 
Methodist Church, with burial in Antioch Congregational Christian Church Cemetery, 
Roanoke.  The Rev. Larry Stephens and the Rev. Floyd Carmack officiated.
   Mrs. Lane was born in Roanoke on Sept. 22, 1937, daughter of Elizabeth Phillips Lee 
and the late James Cecil Lee.  She was a graduate of Handley High School and received a 
master's degree from Auburn University.  She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.  
Mrs. Lane taught at Lanett High School for 16 years and retired from Southern Union's 
Valley campus with 20 years of service.  She was a homemaker and was an active member 
of Lanett First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was an 
active member of the United Methodist Women.  She was treasurer of the Antioch 
Congregational Christian Church Cemetery Fund.
   Memorial donations may be made to Lanett First United Methodist Church or Antioch 
Congregational Christian Church.

Local graveside services were Saturday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at Skyview Memorial 
Gardens, Welch.
   Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Robert T. Newbold of Plainfield; a son, 
Gregory Newbold of Manchester, Conn.; two daughters, Jan Leftwich of Tulsa, Okla., 
and Denise Greene of Edison, N.J.; three grandchildren; and a brother, Henry Worrell of 
Buffalo, N.Y.
   Mrs. Newbold was born in Roanoke and lived in Baltimore, Md., and Columbus, Ohio, 
before moving to Plainfield 26 years ago.  She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian 
Church in Plainfield, where she served on the board of elders.

Rose Emma Cameron and Patricia Brown of Roanoke, Sandra Jean Williams of 
Columbus, Ga., and Lennie Faye Heard of Wadley; a sister, Louise Cameron of Roanoke; 
26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Mose and Rose Emma Cameron; a son, Joseph 
Scott Cameron; and a daughter, Mary Sue Cameron.
   Mr. Cameron, a native of Troup County, Ga., came to Randolph County in the 1940s.  
He became an active member of the board of deacons at Friendship Baptist Church in 
Wadley, where he served with distinction until his health failed.

Mary Louise Waldrep Galberaith

   (LAKELAND, Fla.) Mary Louise Waldrep Galberaith, 53, of Lakeland, Fla., died 
Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in an automobile accident.
   Born in Randolph County, Ala., on June 6, 1945, she moved to Lakeland in 1963.  She 
was in computer services at W.S. Badcock Furniture Co. Inc. headquarters, Mulberry, Fla.  
She was a member of Scott Lake Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her husband, James Terry Galberaith; a daughter, Gina Buckley of 
Bradenton, Fla.; six sisters, Angie Mintz of Lakeland, Willene Kelly of Newman [sic-Newnan], 
Ga., Wilma McGill of Auburn, Mozelle Wier and Florence Henderson, both 
of Roanoke, and Mildred DePuis of Panama City, Fla.; and two brothers, James Waldrep 
and Randy Langley, both of Roanoke.
   Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at Scott Lake Baptist Church, Lakeland.

Fletcher Calvert 'Billy' Spears

   (ASHLAND) Fletcher Calvert "Billy" Spears, 63, of Ashland, formerly of LaGrange, 
GA, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Clay County Hospital.
   Mr. Spears was born Feb. 28, 1936, in Randolph County.  He was a former employee of 
the Duncan Stewart Plant with Milliken and Company and the former owner of Spears 
Clothing Store at Lee's Crossing.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nancy Spears of Ashland; two daughters, Stephanie 
Smith of Ashland and Robbie Pruitt of LaGrange; two sons, Shane Spears and Richard 
Seymour of Ashland; his mother, Mrs. Bonnie Spears of LaGrange; two sisters, Melba 
Smallwood of LaGrange and Edith Bowen of Woodland; two brothers, Ralph Spears of 
Sand Mountain and Flavis Spears of Hopkinsville, KY; and nine grandchildren.
   Funeral services were Saturday at 11 a.m. EST at the chapel of LaGrange Funeral 
Home.  The Rev. Roland Cross, the Rev. Dee Anderson and Brother Jimmy Pruitt 
officiated.  Interment was in Potash Church of God Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by LaGrange Funeral Home.

OBITUARIES:

Earnest Clifton Knight

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Earnest Clifton Knight, 78, of Wadley, were at 11 a.m. 
Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Corinth Christian Church, with the Rev. Phillip Gore, Ricky 
Cummings and Gordon Taylor officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Knight died Wednesday, March 24, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born June 26, 1920, son of Arthur and 
Etta Stephens Knight.  He was an army veteran of World War II, had been self-employed 
as a carpenter, and was a deacon at Corinth Christian Church.  He was preceded in death 
by his wife, Sarah Annette Knight, and a son, Earnest Wayne Knight.
   Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Hodges of Wadley; two sons, Donnie Knight and 
Tommy Knight of Wadley; three sisters, Kate Knight, Betty Brooks and Mae Parrish of 
Wadley; one brother, O. C. Knight of Wadley; eight grandchildren, and one great- 
granddaughter.
   Pallbearers were Charles Clark, Gene Taylor, Phillip Sikes, Mike Taylor, Ralph Knight, 
Wendell Knight, Franklin Knight and Billy Knight.

Milford Lee Johnson

   (ATLANTA) Milford Lee Johnson, 68, of Atlanta died suddenly Saturday, March 20, 
1999.
   His funeral was Friday, March 26, at noon at Echols Mortuary in Atlanta.
   Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Randolph County to the late Olin and Mattie 
Pearl Johnson.  He was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church.  After graduating from 
Five Points High School, he later enlisted in the military.  In 1964, he married Zeola 
Copeland.  After the death of his mother in 1991, Mr. Johnson moved to Atlanta and was 
employed with DeKalb College.  He retired in 1997.
   Mr. Johnson is survived by two daughters, Linda Johnson and Terry Lynn Tribble; 
six grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
   Echols Mortuary of Atlanta was in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Germany Smith

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Elsie Germany Smith, 78, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
March 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church, with Bro. Barry Cosper and Bro. 
Larry Ingram officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Smith died Friday, March 26, at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham.  She was a 
native of Tallapoosa County, a former resident of Clay County and Alexander City, a 
textile worker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Roanoke.
   She is survived by one son, Johnny Germany of Jackson Gap; two step-daughters, 
Myrna Jane Longshore of Roanoke and Rhonda Bird of Lanett; one sister, Kelsie Suggs of 
Ashland; three granddaughters; four step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren and 
one great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Lineville.

Melvin M. 'Corky' Ward

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Melvin M. "Corky" Ward, 70, of LaGrange died Wednesday, 
March 24, 1999, at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mr. Ward was born in Randolph County on Nov. 1, 1928, son of the late John Will and 
Myrtle Brown Ward.  He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical 
Workers, the American Legion, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ramona S. Ward of LaGrange; a daughter, Jackie 
Taylor of LaGrange; one grandson; a brother, Winfred Ward of LaGrange; and a niece.  
Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his son, John William Ward.
   Graveside services were Friday, March 26, at 1 p.m. EST at Shadowlawn Cemetery.  
The Rev. David Kegel officiated.

Charles William Newman

   (OXFORD) Charles William Newman, 77, of Oxford died Thursday, March 25, 1999, 
at St. Vincent's Hospital, Birmingham.
   Services were Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Baptist Church, 
Anniston, with Dr. Billy Harris and the Rev. Charles Stroud officiating.  Entombment was 
in Forestlawn Gardens Cemetery, Anniston.
   Survivors include his wife, Mildred L. Newman of Oxford; one son, Charles William 
Newman Jr. of Oxford; two sisters, Nancy Bennett of Oxford and Sue Davis of Louisville, 
Ky.; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Russ Slay, Charles Everett, Orbie Powers, Bill McDonald, Jack 
Hamilton, Herbert Cunningham, Richard Sawyer, Sammy Higginbotham, Charles 
Strickland and Joe Machovec.  Honorary pallbearers were employees of Mr. Newman's 
business.
   Mr. Newman was a native of Kentucky and a resident of Oxford for the past 41 years.  
He was the owner of Oxford Lumber Ace Hardware, Roanoke Ace Home Center, Wadley 
Cash & Carry and Talladega Ace Home Center.  Mr. Newman was a former board 
member of First State Bank, Central Bank and Colonial Bank.  He was a member of 
Hartwell Lodge #101 and a member of York & Scottish Rite Shrine.  Mr. Newman was a 
charter member of Homebuilders Association, a veteran of World War II, a Gideon and a 
deacon of Parker Memorial Baptist Church.
   The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, 
the Kidney Foundation or to the Juvenile Diabetes Association. 
   Arrangements were by Miller Funeral Home, Oxford.

Ada Estell Staples

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ada Estell Staples, 87, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Craft 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Miss Staples died Saturday, March 27, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 28, 19ll, daughter of 
Thomas Robert and Mollie Sherrer Staples.  She had been employed in the textile industry 
and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
   Survivors include three sisters, Lucy Wood, Sarah Staples and Mary Etta Waldrep, all of 
Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Randy Waldrep, Ray Staples, Marion Staples, Robert Staples, Dale 
Sheppard and June Waldrep.

Eunice Rebecca Redmon

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Eunice Rebecca Redmon, 93, of Wadley were at 
3 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Ebenezer Methodist Church, with the Rev. Vernon 
Brown and the Rev. Ray Dunn officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Redmon died Monday, March 29, at her residence.
   A lifelong resident of Chambers County, she was born April 23, 1905, daughter of John 
Henry and Alfa Jarrell Looser.  She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer 
Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, N. B. Redmon.
   Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Ann Bass of Chamblee, Ga.; two sons, Ollie 
Redmon of Wadley and John Redmon of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sisters, Lemerle Parks of 
Alexander City and Katherine Sims of Ashland; six grandchildren and nine great- 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Mark Redmon, Allen Redmon, Scott Redmon, Scott Sheumaker, Greg 
Bailey and Terry Gordon.  Honorary pallbearer was Jimmy Looser.

Alice Howard

   (ROANOKE) Alice Howard, 82, of Roanoke died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at 
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  The body will be placed in the church one 
hour prior to the services.
   Survivors include a daughter, Erma Jean Howard of Atlanta; a brother, John Hand of 
Starkville, Miss.; four sisters, Mae Bell Freeland and Sallie Maude Clark of Carrollton, 
Ga., Ollie Mae Hand of Gadsden and Annie Elizabeth McCurty of Warren, Ohio; and five 
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, David B. Howard; her parents, 
Jack and Sarah Hand; two brothers, Sam Burpee Hand and Joe Hand; and three sisters, 
Mattie Mae Strong, Lillian Elnora Bolden and Ruth Ware.
   Ms. Howard was a faithful and devoted member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in 
Roanoke.  In recent years, she had been a resident of Roanoke Health Care Center in 
Roanoke.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Essie Mae Smith

   (MEMPHIS, Tenn.) Essie Mae Smith, 93, of Memphis, Tenn., died Saturday, March 20, 
1999, at Methodist Central Hospital, Memphis.
   Funeral services were at New Bethel Baptist Church, Memphis, on Monday, March 22, 
with the Rev. C. L. Mathis officiating.  A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 
27, at 1:30 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church, Welch, with the Rev. J. J. White officiating.  
Burial was in the Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include a daughter, Cyra M. Motley of Memphis; a son, Calvin Smith of 
Tuscaloosa; 11 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a host of great-great-grandchildren; 
one sister, Arrie Smith of Roanoke; one brother, John Smith of Roanoke; and a host of 
other relatives and friends.

Addie Cumbee Robinson

   (FIVE POINTS) Funeral services for Addie Cumbee Robinson, 89, of Five Points will 
be Thursday, April 1, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at her residence at 2311 County Rd. 297, with 
Dr. Doug Turner and the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating.  Burial will be at Bethel Baptist 
Church in Chambers County.
   Mrs. Robinson died Monday, March 29, at her home.
   A Chambers County native and lifelong resident, she was born Feb. 13, 1910, daughter 
of John and Ludie Ellington Cumbee.  She was a homemaker and a member of First 
Baptist Church in Roanoke.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. 
Robinson.
   Survivors include one daughter, Ludie Robinson of Montgomery; one son, Jim 
Robinson of Roanoke; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. 
Hal Finney of LaFayette.
   The family will receive friends at the residence from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31.

Calvin Prince

   (Woodland)  Funeral services for Calvin Prince, 72, of Woodland were Saturday, 
March 27, 1999, at 3 p.m. at [West]Napoleon Church of Christ, with Bro. Lynwood 
Smith, Bro. Jimmie Smith and Bro. Don McCord officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mr. Prince died Thursday, March 25, at University Hospital, Birmingham, following a 
short illness.
   Mr. Prince was a Church of Christ evangelist for many years and for the past ten years 
had traveled throughout the Southeast extensively and had traveled as far as California in 
ministering for the church.  He served on Randolph County Board of Education for 18 
years and as chairman for a number of years.  Mr. Prince had served as a trustee for 
Woodland High School, and was an active member of the Woodland Quarterback Club 
and the Cattlemen's Association.  He was an army veteran of World War II.  Mr. Prince 
was a member of Napoleon Church of Christ, where he anchored the church leadership.
   Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Prince of Woodland; three daughters, Wilda 
Yarbrough, Rita Whitaker and Kathy Prince, all of Woodland; five sons, Ronnie Prince 
and Tim Prince of Woodland, Glenn Prince of Roanoke, Sidney Prince of Sanford, NC 
and Kenneth Prince of Nashville, TN; one sister, Annie Pearl Mann of Wedowee; a very 
special nephew and friend Ray Laney of Lanett; 11 grandchildren and one great- 
grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Ryan Prince, Clint Prince, Stuart Prince, Corey Prince, Cal Prince, 
Bradley Prince, Brian Raughton, Josh Burns and David Satterwhite.
   Honorary pallbearers were Ray Laney, Terry Langley, Clifford Green, Mark Johnson, 
Euklett Bailey, Carlton Crenshaw, Steve Prince, Bobby Workman, Joe Thompson, Jeff 
Thompson and Johnny Futral.

Fred Crenshaw

   (Woodland)  Funeral services for Fred Crenshaw, 89, of Woodland will be at 2 p.m. 
Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Napoleon Church of Christ, with Bro. Terry Langley 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Church of Christ Cemetery.
   Mr. Crenshaw died Monday, March 29, at Care Center of Opelika, after an extended 
illness.
   He was born in Randolph County on July 7, 1909, son of Neal and Annie Williams 
Crenshaw.  He had been self-employed as a farmer and was a member of Napoleon 
Church of Christ.
   Survivors include one daughter, Mary Kimbrell of Hogansville, GA; one son, Oliver 
Crenshaw of Woodland; two sisters, Lessie Mae Crenshaw of Woodland and Estelle 
Brown of Roanoke; one brother, Carlton Crenshaw of Ephesus, GA; six grandchildren and 
seven great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home from 3:30 to 9 p.m. 
Wednesday, March 31.  Mr. Crenshaw will lie in state at the church for one hour 
beginning at 1p.m. on Thursday.
   Pallbearers will be grandsons.

William Ernest McCord

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for William Ernest McCord, 80, of Woodland will be 
at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Morrison's Chapel United Methodist Church with the 
Rev. Cloyse Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mr. McCord died Monday, March 29, at his residence following an extended illness.
   He was born in Randolph County March 1, 1919, son of Daniel and Hester Edwards 
McCord.  Mr. McCord was self-employed and lived for 45 years in Albuquerque, N.M.  
He was a veteran of World War II, a member of Morrison's Chapel United Methodist 
Church and a member of Lamar Lodge F&AM.
   Survivors include his wife, Sarah G. Strain McCord of Woodland; two daughters, 
Jacqueline McCord Giffone of Las Vegas, Nev., and Judy McCord Shouse of Wedowee; 
one son, Stephen Ray McCord of Bowdon, Ga.; three sisters, Eva Camp of Wedowee, 
Adelle McCurley of Bowdon and Janette Burroughs of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, O. C. 
McCord of Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 
March 31.  Mr. McCord will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. 
Thursday.
   Memorial contributions may be floral or donations can be made to the Morrison's 
Chapel Building Fund.
   Pallbearers will be Larry Camp, Benny Camp, Tommy Camp, Josh McCord, Justin 
McCord, Jason McCord, Wilton McCord and Jeffery McCord.
