OBITUARIES:

Douglas Shellie 'Bud' McDaniel

   (ROANOKE)  Services for Douglas Shellie "Bud" McDaniel, 66, of Roanoke will be at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bobby 
Kirby officiating.  Burial will follow at Potash Cemetery.
   Mr. McDaniel died Monday, Sept. 3, at his residence.
   He was born in Randolph County on Oct. 2, 1934, son of William Shellie and Laura 
Mulkey McDaniel.  He had been employed with the Roanoke Utilities Board.  He was 
preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Peggy Faye McDaniel.
   Survivors include his wife, Melvina McDaniel of Eclectic; two sisters, Nancy Hunt and 
Blanch Brown of Roanoke; two brothers, Bob McDaniel of Ashburn, GA, and Horace 
McDaniel of Roanoke; five stepdaughters, Diane Leonard and Jo Ann Hamlin of Ft. 
Worth, TX, and Billie Ann Frye, Debra Ann Spears and Patricia Ann Harvel of Roanoke; 
seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers will be nephews.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke

Infant Jessica Ann Windsor

   (CUSSETA) Infant Jessica Ann Windsor of Cusseta, born Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, 
died that same day at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m., 
with a graveside service at New Hope Christian Church Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.  The Rev. 
Clifford DeLee and the Rev. Benny Satterwhite officiated.
   She is survived by her parents, Scotty and Lynne Windsor of Cusseta; a sister, Julia 
Faythe Windsor of Cusseta; grandparents, Tony and Nancy Mitcham of LaFayette and 
William Robert and Carrie Ann Windsor of Wadley; and a great-grandmother, Leila 
Belcher of Abanda.  She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Julia Mitcham.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Louis Higgins

   (FIVE POINTS) Louis Higgins, 96, of Five Points died Wednesday, Aug 29, 2001, at 
Columbus Regional Medical Center, Columbus, GA.
   Services were at Rehope Missionary Baptist Church, Five Points, on Saturday, Sept. 1, 
at 11 a.m., with the Rev. H. L. Jones, pastor, officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include one son, Jerome Higgins of Five Points; two daughters, Theresa B. 
Washington of Nashville, TN, and Anna H. Washington of Anniston; one brother, Gilbert 
Higgins of Notasulga; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  He was preceded 
in death by his wife of more than 60 years, Gertrude I. Higgins, and two sons, Richard 
Higgins and Franklin Higgins.
   Mr. Higgins was a native and lifelong resident of Chambers County.  He was a member 
of Rehope Baptist Church for more than 80 years, having served as clerk, trustee, 
superintendent of Sunday school and Sunday school teacher.  He graduated from 
Tuskegee Institute and was a printer, teacher, farmer and entrepreneur.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Sarah J. Doss

   (ROANOKE) Service for Sarah J. Doss, 84, of Roanoke were at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 
1, 2001, at New Hope Congregational Christian Church, with the Revs. Arthur Dailey and 
Hoyt Noel Jr. officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Doss died Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A former resident of Franklin, GA and LaGrange, GA, she was born in Chambers 
County, AL, on Jan. 8, 1917, daughter of John Jackson and Hettie Young Floyd.  She was 
employed as a registered nurse at Randolph County Hospital and was co-owner of 
Franklin Nursing Home.  She was a member, secretary and treasurerer, and a pillar of 
New Hope Congregational Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by two 
husbands, Cloyd M. Brown and Olin A. Doss, and her parents.
   Survivors include three sons, Robert Doss of Marietta, GA, and Barry Doss and Jerry 
Brown of Roanoke; two sisters, Annie Jim Grier of McDonough, GA, and Audrey 
Caldwell of St. Claire Shores, MI; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host 
of nieces and nephews who loved her as a mother.
   Pallbearers were Hani Dabbas, Hoyt Noel Jr., Russell Havey, Ray Halsey, John Milner 
and Herbert Clark.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Tulane Cole Mize

   (ANNISTON) Tulane Cole Mize, 91, of Anniston died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in 
Anniston.
   Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston, 
with the Rev. Edward Heptinstall officiating.  Burial will be in Forestlawn Gardens.  The 
family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
   Survivors include a son, Richard Odell Mize Sr. of Heflin; a daughter, Joyce Ann Mize 
Anderson of Bullard, Texas; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Louis Lefoy, Paul Holland, T. O. Cox Jr., Richard O. Mize Jr., H. 
Lowell Moon Jr., Collin G. Vaughn, M. Seth Vaughn and Samuel C. Gibson.
   Mrs. Mize was a native of Carrollton, GA, and lived her adult life in Anniston.  She was 
a member of First Baptist Church of Anniston since Mother's Day, 1930, and was active in 
her Bible study classes.  Mrs. Mize formerly worked with The Cottage Shop and Hudson's 
Department Store for many years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey 
Theodore Mize; four sisters, Ruby Lester Dingler, Berta Mable Cox, Clara Bell Holland 
and Lorraine Lefoy; and one brother, John Louis Cole.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rebuilding Fund of 
First Baptist Church of Anniston, 105 West 15th Street, Anniston, AL 36201.
   Arrangements are by Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.

Merle Abner

   (LAFAYETTE) Service for Merle Abner, 88, of LaFayette were at 2 p.m.  Saturday, 
Sept. 1, 2001, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Revs. G. K. Abner and Ricky 
Emery officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Abner died Thursday, Aug. 30, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   He was born in Clay County on April 25, 1913, son of William David Abner and Viola 
Ovelta Holloway Abner.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, a professional singer 
with the Suwanee River Boys and was a Baptist by faith.
   Survivors include five sisters, Alma Abner of Roanoke, Novella Bradley, Geneva Emery 
and Lora A. Childers, all of Wedowee, and Willie Webb of Valley; and two brothers, 
Thomas Braxton Abner of Huguley and Buford Abner of Wedowee.
   Pallbearers were John Abner, Dave Bradley, Ronnie Yates, Mike McCormick, Larry 
Bradley, Jerry Rice and Buford Abner.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Deborah Jean Heflin

   (ROANOKE) Services for Deborah Jean Heflin, 46, of Roanoke were Saturday, Sept. 8, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at Rehope Baptist Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. Dr. H. L. Jones 
officiating.  Burial followed at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Wadley.
   Mrs. Heflin died Tuesday, Sept. 4, at West Georgia Medical Ceter, LaGrange.
   She is survived by her husband, Leon Heflin of Roanoke; her son, Marcus Heflin of 
Roanoke; her father, Rufus Burrows of Roanoke; her mother, Mattie Burrows of 
Roanoke; three brothers, Nathaniel Burrows, William Burrows and Cleophus Burrows, all 
of Roanoke; four sisters, Mattie Ruth Lee of Roanoke, Annerine Clark of Anniston and 
Gertrude Kettle and Ethel Burrows of Washington, DC; her mother-in-law, five 
sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Glenn Mickle

   (LAFAYETTE) Glenn Mickle, 75, of LaFayette died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at West 
Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Services were at First United Methodist Church in LaFayette on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 
p.m. with interment in Chapel Hill Methodist Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Paul Howard 
and the Rev. Joyce Woodstuff officiated.
   Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Mickle of LaFayette; two sons, Charles Mickle of 
Opelika and David Mickle of Marietta, GA; one sister, Grace Young of Roanoke; and 
three grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Mickle.
   Mr. Mickle was born in Randolph County on Jan. 21, 1926, son of the late Ruth Mickle.  
He operated Mickle & Jacobs Appliance Store in LaFayette for many years.  Later he 
worked for Chambers County Hospital and retired from the Chambers County Board of 
Education's Maintenance Department.  He was a member of First United Methodist 
Church of LaFayette.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Roger Dale Hugley

   (ROANOKE) Roger Dale Hugley, 36, of Roanoke died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his 
residence.
   Survivors include two daughters, Shavonte Keishawn and Kristie Shanae Hugley, both 
of Atlanta, GA; three sisters, Patrice Hugley, Starlitha Hugley and Cynthia Barry, all of 
Atlanta; three brothers, Junior Lee Hugley of Roanoke and Steve Hugley and Darryl 
Hugley of Atlanta; his mother, Floria Ann Hugley of Atlanta; his father, Willie Junior 
Hugley of Roanoke; five aunts, three uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Memorial services for Mr. Hugley were held Saturday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m. at New 
Beginning Outreach Ministry, Roanoke, with Elder Tom Staples officiating.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Verna Louise Bryant Hughes

   (NEWELL) Services for Vera Louise Bryant Hughes, 80, of Newell, formerly of 
Kennett, MO, were Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at 4 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, 
Wedowee.  Burial was on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Oakridge Cemetery in Kennett, MO.
   Mrs. Hughes died Thursday, Aug. 23, at her home.
   A Missouri native, Mrs. Hughes was born in Dunclin County on June 25, 1921, 
daughter of Birt P. and Ida Mae Craig Bryant.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
First Baptist Church in Kennett.
   Survivors include her husband, William L. Hughes of Newell; two duaghters, Jerry 
Stroud of Newell and Louise Tucker of Lilburn, GA; one son, Mike B. Hughes of Tampa, 
FL; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Martha Amanda Bates Pugh

   (BIRMINGHAM) Martha Amanda Bates Pugh, 68, of Birmingham died Monday, Sept. 
10, 2001.
   Mrs. Pugh was born in Roanoke, daughter of the late M. E. and Effie Suddeth Bates.  
She attended Berry College in Rome, GA, and graduated from Auburn University in 1954.  
She worked with the Alabama Extension Service in Clanton and was retired from the 
State of Alabama where she worked as a social work supervisor.
   Survivors include two daughters, Amanda McMahan and Cynthia Hudson, and four 
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Bates, and a sister, Ethlyn 
Shaddix.
   A memorial service will be Thursday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at Ridouts Valley Chapel, 
Homewood, with burial in Randolph Memory Gardens, Roanoke.  A nephew, the Rev. 
Terrell Shaddix, will officiate.
   Memorial contributions can be made to the Amelia Center, 1513 Fourth Ave. South, 
Birmingham 35233, a place for grieving children and those who love them.
   Arrangments were by Ridouts Valley Chapel, Homewood.

Frances Darlene Halsey

   (WADLEY) Service for Frances Darlene Halsey, 39, of Wadley were Saturday, Aug. 
25, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Wadley First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Abigail 
Carlisle-Wilke and the Rev. Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial was at New Home 
Congregational Christian Church cemetery.
   Ms. Halsey died Thursday, Aug. 23, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A former Eastaboga resident, Ms. Halsey was a Randolph County native, born Jan. 6, 
1962, daughter of Tom Clack and Josephine Osborne Halsey.  She was a member of 
Wadley First United Methodist Church and had worked as a dietician with Randolph 
Medical Center.
   Survivors include her mother, Josephine Halsey of Wadley; two sisters, Resa Halsey and 
Wendy Halsey, both of Wadley; four brothers, Tommy Halsey of Roanoke, Richard 
Halsey and Mike Halsey of Wadley and Mark Halsey of Valley.
   Pallbearers were Tommy Halsey, Richard Halsey, Mark Halsey, Mike Halsey, James 
Halsey, Joseph Halsey and Bo Sutton.

J. B. Farmer [sic - Farrar]

   (FIVE POINTS) Graveside services for J. B. Farrar, 67, of Five Points, formerly of 
LaGrange, GA, were Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at l p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens, 
with the Rev. Charles Greathouse officiating.
   Mr. Farrar died Thursday, Sept. 13, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   A Chambers County native, Mr. Farrar was born Feb. 25, 1934, son of Matthew P. and 
Mary L. Farrar.  He was a member of Standing Rock Methodist Church and had worked 
as an electrician with West Georgia Medical Center.  Mr. Farrar was a retired Navy 
veteran and had served during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
   Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Greathouse Farrar of Five Points; five daughters, 
Kathy Woodruff of LaGrange, Sandy Starr and Dottie Farrar of Standing Rock and Peggy 
Cross and Susan Bassett of Roanoke; one son, Fred Farrar of LaGrange; two sisters, Dot 
Bishop of Cedar Key, FL, and Avis Barnett of Dunkinville, TX; five grandchildren and 
two great-grandchildren.

Johnathan Lyle Chase Thomas

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Johnathan Lyle Chase Thomas, infant son of Darrin Lee 
Thomas and Kimberly Gail Thomas of Rock Mills, were Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at 11 
a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wendell Rush officiating.  Burial was 
at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   The baby was born at Randolph Medical Center on Aug. 26, and died Thursday, Sept. 
13, at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
   Survivors include his parents; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Bennett of Rock Mills 
and Mr. and Mrs. Argle Thomas of LaGrange, GA; great-grandparents, Alma Bennett of 
Roanoke and Bertha Perry and Eula Mae Bowen of LaGrange; three half-sisters, Katie 
Bennett of Rock Mills and Nathalie Jo Davis and Nicol Davis of Woodland; a brother, 
Alex Thomas of Rock Mills; and several aunts and uncles.

Ruby Lee Brown

   (ROANOKE) Ruby Lee Brown, 78, of Roanoke died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Brown was born July 2, 1923, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Homer 
and Mary Lou Richardson Smith.  She was retired as a wire trimmer at Trintex 
Corporation.  Mrs. Brown was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.  She had been 
married to the late Ezra Brown.
   Survivors include three sons, Jackie Brown of Franklin, GA, Larry Brown of Roopville, 
GA, and Sammy Brown of Bowdon, GA; five daughters, Mary Brown of Columbus, GA, 
Carolyn Hester and Collene Molnar of Eufaula, Janice Mitchell of Unionville, TN, and 
Linda Sprwell of Columbia, TN; three sisters, Louise Overton, Sybil Smith and Ethel 
Yarbrough of Roanoke; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
   Services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Napoleon Church of Christ, with the 
Rev. Gary Stewart, the Rev. Randall Eidson and the Rev. Elton Overton officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.  Music was furnished by Corey Mitchell.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater and West Funeral Home, Bowdon.

Bertha Gertrude Calhoun French

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bertha Gertrude Calhoun French, 82, of Roanoke were 
Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Douglas Turner and 
Dr. Don Paulson officiating.  Burial was at Bethel East Baptist Church cemetery.
   Mrs. French died Saturday, Sept. 15, at her home following an extended illness.
   A life-long Randolph County resident, Mrs. French was born Aug. 6, 1919, daughter of 
Henry Lee and Lara Smith Calhoun.  She was a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church, 
active in the Philathea Sunday School class and served as secretary/treasurer for many 
years.  She had been employed as a seamstress with Playtex and was a member of the 
VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.  Mrs. French was preceded in death 
by her parents; a brother, Jessie Calhoun; and a sister, Lela Gosdin.
   Survivors include her husband, Floyd French of Roanoke; two sisters, Ethel Maddox of 
LaGrange, GA, and Nellie Sikes of Wedowee; one brother, Crawford Calhoun of 
Woodland; and several nieces and nephews.
   Nephews Tom Brown, Rufus Brown, Tim Sikes, Winfred Gosdin, Harold Harmon, 
Forrest French, Linwood French and Hobert McManus served as pallbearers.  Members of 
First Baptist Church Philathea Sunday School Class were honorary pallbearers.

Johnnie Ruth Tolbert Jackson

   (ROANOKE) Johnnie Ruth Tolbert Jackson, 90, of Roanoke died Monday, Sept. 17, 
2001, at LaFayette Nursing Home, LaFayette.
   Mrs. Jackson was born March 8, 1911, in Randolph County to George Washington and 
Olethia Tolbert, the youngest of four girls.  She was nicknamed Baby Ruth.  She was a 
teacher in the Randolph County and Roanoke school systems for more than 30 years after 
receiving a master's degree in mathematics from Alabama State University in 1946.  She 
was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Roanoke and a 
member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
   Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with 
the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.
   She is survived by her son, Jesse Burnett Jackson; four grandchildren; eight great- 
grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.  She is 
preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 47 years, Jesse C. Jackson; and 
three sisters, Helen Greatrude Walker, Willie T. McCloud and Annie Few.
   Arrangements are by Silmon and Seroyer Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Nellie Ophelia White

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Nellie Ophelia White, 92, of Wedowee were at 11 a.m. on 
Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Bethel West Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Holcombe 
and Clayton Scott officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. White died Thursday, Sept. 20, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. White was born Jan. 2, 1909, daughter of Vinson and 
Ada Rice Williams.  She was a member of Bethel West Baptist Church and had been 
employed with Sewell Manufacturing.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ertis F. 
White.
   Survivors include one daughter, Lillian Rollins of Wedowee; and two sons, Tommy 
White of Auburn and Jimmy White of Jackson's Gap.
   Pallbearers were Robert Manley, Vinson Williams, Russell Rollins, Hubert Simpson, Joe 
Tom Bradley and John White.

Lillie Stephens Patterson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lillie Stephens Patterson, 93, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
Sept. 23, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tex Ergle 
officiating.  Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Patterson died Friday, Sept. 21, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Patteson was born June 20, 1908, daughter 
of Cam and Clara Harris Stephens.  She was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist 
Church and had been employed with Palm Beach.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Frank Patterson.
   Survivors include one son, Carey Patterson of Auburn; a sister, Daisy Huey of Roanoke; 
two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Allen Patterson, Michael Patterson, Frank Patterson, Veston Patterson, 
Kari Patterson and Royce Bonner.

Lottie Kitchens Jackson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lottie Kitchens Jackson, 91, of Roanoke were Tuesday,

officiating.  Burial was at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Jackson died Sunday, Sept. 23, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A former resident of Auburn, Montgomery and Edenton, NC, Mrs. Jackson was a 
Chambers County native, born Nov. 29, 1909, daughter of Otis D. and Verna Slaughter 
Kitchens.  She was a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church and had been emloyed with 
the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her 
husband, Dr. H. C. Jackson; and a niece Verna Foster.
   Survivors include one sister, Gladys K. Foster of LaFayette; one brother, Otis D. 
"Buster" Kitchens of Roanoke; two nieces, Louise Cox of LaFayette and Ann Richardson 
of Roanoke; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; 10 great-great-nieces and -nephews; 
one great-great-great-niece; two stepsons, Dr. Charles S. Jackson of Wilkesboro, NC, and 
Thomas C. Jackson of Morrisonville, NC; and three step-grandchildren.

Jeffie Marley Eidson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mrs. Jeffie Marley Eidson, 85, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Union City, GA, were Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with the Rev. Philip Johnson officiating.  Graveside services were at Holly Hill 
Memorial Park in Fairburn, GA, at 2 p.m.
   Mrs. Eidson died Saturday, Sept. 22, at Randolph Medical Center.
   An Eastman, GA, native, Mrs. Eidson was born Nov. 17, 1915, daughter of Norbert 
Thomas and Susie Vanlandingham Marley.  She was a member of State Line 
Congregational Christian Church at Five Points and had worked as the activities director 
at Sky Ranch Nursing Home in Fairburn.  She was preceded in death by a son, Norbert 
Parker Eidson, and a brother, Steven Rayford Marley.
   Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Herman Eidson of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Susie Cochran of Roanoke and Catherine Eidson Weber of Newnan, GA; one son, Walter 
Steven Eidson of Union City; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Andy Vickers, Tony Golden, Chris Golden, Matt Eidson, Luke Eidson 
and Danny Eidson.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to State Line Congregational Christian 
Church, P.O. Box 3066, LaGrange, GA 30241.

Charlie Hairston

   (ROANOKE) Charlie Hairston, 57, of Roanoke died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Hairston of Roanoke; one daughter, Cassandra 
Hairston of Roanoke; two sons, Christopher Bo Hairston of Hall County, GA and Charlie 
Hairston of Roanoke; three grandchildren; 10 sisters, Rosie L. Dardy and Annie R. 
Johnson of West Point, GA, Nancy L. Varner and Mary H. Jackson of Lanett, Lizzie M. 
Hubbard of LaGrange, GA, Emma R. Hubbard of Ypsilanti, MI, Mattie R. Johnson of 
Atlanta, GA, and Evelyn Lee of Boston, MA, and Evelyn and Dorothy of New Jersey; two 
brothers, Arthur L. Hairston of Boston and Jessie R. Hairston of Ypsilanti; his father-in- 
law and mother-in-law, the Rev. Alfred and Ella Hill of Roanoke; aunts, uncles and a host 
of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
   Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, 
with the Rev. Elijah Jackson officiating.
   Mr. Hairston was preceded in death by his parents, Brady Tom Hairston and Ollie Lee 
Atkinson Hairston; two brothers, John Willie Hurston, Sr. and Brady Hurston; and four 
grandchildren.
   Arrangements are by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Juan Gabriel Alejandro Velazquez

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Juan Gabriel Alejandro Velazquez, 24, of Wedowee were at 
2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Dryden Funeral Home in Heflin.  Burial will be in 
Xoclan Cemetery in Merida, Mexico.
   Mr. Velazquez died Sunday, Sept. 23, in Heflin.
   Survivors include his wife, Isaura Mendez Juares of Merida; his father and mother, 
Leonel Alejandro Velazquez Sr. and Maria Velazquez Ramirez, both of Merida; a son, 
Joshue Gabriel Velazquez of Merida; a sister, Maria Isabel Velazquez of Merida; and three 
brothers, Leonel Alejandro Velazquez, Jr., Luis Alejasquez Velazquez and Miguel 
Alejandro Velazquez, all of Wedowee.
   Mr. Velazquez was a native of Aguadulce Veracruz, Mexico and had lived in Wedowee 
the past year.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Weldon F. Patterson

   (LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) Weldon F. Patterson, 34, of Lawrenceville, GA, died 
Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Gwinett Medical Center, Lawrenceville.
   Mr. Patterson was born in Detroit, MI, on Feb. 20, 1967, son of the Rev. William H. 
and Mattie R. Patterson.  He is survived by his parents; a sister, Micata Zachery; two 
grandmothers; and a host of aunts, great-aunts, uncles, great-uncles, cousins, nieces, 
nephews and friends.
   Services were at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, Welch, on Friday, Sept. 21, at 11 
a.m., with the Rev. Rodney K. Turner officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Seroyer Funeral Home, LaFayette.
