OBITUARIES:

Clarence 'Gene' Goodwin

   (LINEVILLE) Clarence "Gene" Goodwin, 66, of a Lineville route, died Friday, July 30, 
1999, at Clay County Hospital.
   He was a native of Fulton County, Ga., who moved to Randolph County in 1995.  He 
was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the navy and was a member of Clifton 
Dale United Methodist Church in Fulton County.
   He is survived by his wife, Anne Goodwin of Lineville; one daughter, Penelope Jean 
Durham of Delonega [sic], Ga.; two sons, Victor Lee Goodwin of Smyrna, Ga.; and Mark 
Goodwin of Newnan, Ga.; one brother, Harry Goodwin of Smyrna; and 
four grandchildren.
   Memorial services for Mr. Goodwin were at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at Crossroads 
Baptist Church in Newnan.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Lineville.

Charlie E. Ward

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Charlie E. Ward, 90, of Carrollton, Ga., died Friday, July 30, 
1999, at Tanner Medical Center.
   He was a native of Randolph County, Ala., son of the late Work T. Ward and Beulah 
Johnson Ward.  Mr. Ward was a retired salesman for Tanner Grocery Company after 
more than 42 years with the company.  He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in 
Graham.  His wife, Eulette Lovvorn Ward, preceded him in death.
   Survivors include a goddaughter, Terri Carroll of Carrollton; three sisters, Mae Ward of 
Graham, Faye Stewart of LaGrange, Ga., and Nora Sullivan of Roopville, Ga.; and two 
brothers, Woodrow "Woody" Ward and Celvin Ward of Graham.
   Funeral services were Sunday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at Campground United Methodist 
Church, Graham, with the Rev. Monroe Wiggins and the Rev. Kit Carson officiating.  
Music was by Camille Russor, Virginia Kilgore and Dinah Upchurch.
   Pallbearers were Calvin Carroll, Bill Richardson, Doyle Brookins, Allen Stewart, Greg 
Ward, Tommy Ward, Jerry Ward and Warren Ward.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a contribution to Campground United 
Methodist Church, Graham.
   Arrangements were by Almon Funeral Home, Carrollton.

Maude Wood 'Sis' Taylor

   (WADLEY) Maude Wood "Sis" Taylor, 75, of Wadley died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mrs. Taylor was born in Randolph County May 16, 1924, daughter of the late Bessie 
Striblin Wood and Willis H. Wood.  She had worked at West Point Stevens Fairfax Mill in 
the Towel Department until her retirement.  She was a loving mother and grandmother 
and a faithful friend to many people.  She was a Baptist.
   Survivors include her husband, Robert V. Taylor; three daughters, Glenda Shaw and 
Betty Lacy of Lanett and Ginger Rountree of Jeffersonville, Ga.; four sons, Danny Smith 
of Fairfax, Bob Taylor and Terry Taylor of Wadley, and Kim Taylor of Kings Mountain, 
N.C.; a brother, Rufus Wood of Marietta, Ga.; 21 grandchildren and 24 great- 
grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Odell Walker

   (LAFAYETTE) Mrs. Odell Walker, 84, of LaFayette died Friday, July 30, 1999, at her 
residence.
   Funeral services were at Rock Springs Baptist Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, with 
interment in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Bill Choate and the Rev. George Palmer 
officiated.
   Mrs. Walker was a Clay County native, born Dec. 30, 1914.  She was retired from West 
Point Pepperell after 40 years and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church of 
LaFayette.
   Survivors include one son, Jimmy Walker of LaFayette; six sisters, Geraldine Weldon, 
LaVerne Williams and Genel Railey of Wadley, Jean Rice of Opelika, and Madie Hattaway 
and Avis Rice of Valley; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great- 
great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Ina Morine Bolt

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Ina Morine Bolt, 81, of Wedowee were Monday, 
Aug. 9, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church with the Rev. 
J. C. Holloway and Rev. Dorsey White officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Bolt died Saturday, Aug. 7, at Clay County Hospital.
   Mrs. Bolt was a native of Randolph County born Oct. 23, 1917, daughter of Jack and 
Mary Jane Huddleston Lindley.  She was a member of Union Hill Congregational 
Methodist Church and a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin 
Bolt; a son Freddy Ted Lipham; a sister, Zadie Hill; and a brother, Roy Lindley.
   Mrs. Bolt is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Holloway and Mary Florene Holloway 
of Wedowee; three sons, Garvis Lipham, Tony Bolt and Quinton L. Bolt, all of Wedowee; 
three sisters, Vera Mitchell of Wedowee and Adell Pyle and Estelle Ledbetter of Anniston; 
six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Daniel Holloway, Kevin Holloway, Bryan Holloway, Tommy 
Holloway, Teaman Holloway and Leo Cosper.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of arrangements.

W. Byron Reynolds Jr.

   (BAINBRIDGE, Ga.) Funeral services for W. Byron Reynolds Jr., 70, of Bainbridge, 
Ga., were Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in 
Bainbridge with the Revs. Rick Turner and David J. Barrett officiating.  Burial was at Oak 
City Cemetery in Bainbridge.
   Mr. Reynolds died Saturday, Aug. 7, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
   Born May 5, 1929, to William Byron and Hesta Cook Reynolds, Mr. Reynolds was a 
lifetime resident of Bainbridge, where he was a member of First United Methodist Church.  
He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1948 and attended the University of 
Alabama and Florida State University where he earned a B.S. degree in physical 
education.  He taught at Cairo High School in Cairo, Ga., where he served as assistant 
football coach and later head football coach.  He also coached track which included 11 
state championships for Cairo High School.  Mr. Reynolds taught at Hutto Junior High 
School and served as head football coach.  He taught P.E. at Jones-Wheat Elementary 
School and served as assistant football coach at Bainbridge High School.
   He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Laslie Reynolds of Bainbridge; two sons, 
W. Byron Reynolds III of Roanoke and Stephen L. Reynolds of Bainbridge; two 
daughters, Kaye R. Wester and Kim Reynolds of Bainbridge; a sister, Katherine R. Taylor 
of Bainbridge; and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Leon Pate, Bob Christmas, Ralph Jones, Leavy Boutwell, Gene Perkins 
and Mickey Shealy.
   Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
   Arrangements were by Ivey Funeral Home, Bainbridge.

Rosie Lee Harrison

   (ROANOKE) Rosie Lee Harrison, 76, of Roanoke died Saturday, July 31, 1999.
   Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church, with 
burial in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Quinton Tibbs officiated.
   Survivors include eight children, Annie Pearl Dunson of Ohio, Willie Jr. Harrison, Billy 
Harrison, Charlie Joe Harrison and Martha Johnson of Roanoke, Ruby Christian of 
Atlanta, Mary Staples of Montgomery and Brenda Harrison of Indiana; one brother, 
Columbus Spradling; 32 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of other 
relatives and friends.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Robert Clark

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Deacon Robert "Rob" Clark, 99, of Roanoke were 
Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, Roanoke, with the 
Rev. Lathonia Wright officiating.  Burial was at Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery in the 
Welch community.
   Deacon Clark died Friday, Aug. 6, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Born in Clay County, Deacon Clark lived most of his adult life in Roanoke.  He was the 
oldest member of First Baptist Church, where he served over the years in various 
capacities.  Mr. Clark was retired from the Roanoke Guano Company.  He was just three 
months short of his 100th birthday.
   He is survived by two sons, Leroy Clark of Charlotte, N.C., and Tobie Clark of 
Stamford, Conn.; four daughters, Grace Davis of Springfield, Mich., Mary Roberson of 
Stamford, Tavie Lee Heflin of Roanoke and Ida C. Mitchell of Rochester, N.Y.; 
20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Tobie and Mary Clark; his wife, Octavia Clark; and a daughter, Jessie C. Willis.
   Services for Deacon Clark were provided by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Susie Clem B. Carr

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Susie Clem B. Carr, 89, of Woodland will be held 
at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, from Gay Hill Church of God with the Revs. 
Gary Baugh, Stanley Baker and Sonny Kent officiating.  Burial will follow at Flat Rock 
Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Carr died Monday, Aug. 9, at her residence following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born May 29, 1910, daughter of Taylor 
and Ella Bowen.  She was a homemaker and attended the Pentecostal church.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, William O. Carr; three sons, Mark Carr, William H. 
Carr and Edwin Carr; and a daughter, Margarett Carr.
   Survivors include six daughters, Ellawees Roper and Dicie Gosdin of Woodland, 
Dothola Dutton of Jasper, Sara Baker of Verona, Miss., Doris Andrews of Roanoke and 
Darlene Carr Templeton of Niceville, Fla.; one son, Russell Carr of Woodland; one 
brother, Dillard Bowen of Atlanta; one sister, Lucille Nettles of Jacksonville, Fla.; 
18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home until one hour prior to 
services.  Mrs. Carr will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 2 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Ed Mitchum, Eddie Dutton, Tony Richardson, Keenan Moon, Jason 
Carr Templeton and Russell Lewis.  Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Benefield and 
Jared Mark Templeton.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee is in charge of arrangements.

John Thomas 'J.T.' Newborn

   (LINEVILLE) Funeral services for John Thomas "J.T." Newborn, 57, of Lineville were 
at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Crossroads Baptist Church, with the Revs. George 
Gann, Chester Pesnell and Billy East officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Newborn died Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Delta.
   He was born in Cleburne County on March 21, 1942, son of William Thomas and Mary 
Elizabeth Morris Newborn.  He had been self-employed as a farmer and was a member of 
Crossroads Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Newborn, a 
son, Jonathan Newborn, a sister, Vernice Biles, and a brother, Fred Newborn.
   Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Wingo of Lineville, Jane Alred of Ranburne 
and June Williams of Wedowee; two sons, Joseph Newborn of Lineville and Jason 
Newborn of Delta; six sisters, Felmer Junior and Lois Junior of Fruithurst, Aledis Walker  
and Vertie Walker of Heflin, Perlie Smith of Carrollton, Ga., and Melvie Johnson of 
Calhoun, Ga.; two brothers, B. F. Newborn of Fruithurst and Charlie Newborn of Paxton, 
Fla., and 14 grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Joshua Newborn, Chris Newborn, Kyle Cook, Shane Cook, Kenny 
Smith and Robert Kiker.
   In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial donations be made to Helping hands

Boyd Bruce Overton, Jr.

   (TUCKER, Ga.) Funeral services for Boyd Bruce Overton Jr., 45, of Tucker, Ga., were 
Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. J. D. 
Bearden officiating.  Burial was at Welcome Home Baptist Church cemetery.
   Mr. Overton died Sunday, Aug. 15, at Grady Hospital, Atlanta, from injuries sustained 
in an accident at the Georgia Power Company where he was employed.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Overton was born Sept. 22, 1953, son of Bruce and 
Mattie Akins Overton.  He was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church.  He was 
preceded in death by his father, Bruce Overton.
   Survivors include his mother, Mattie Overton of Roanoke; his step-grandmother, Birdie 
Akins of Heflin; five sisters, Frances Smith, Dovie Cofield and Leuticia Barber of 
Roanoke, Judy Livingston of West Point, Ga., and Wanda Weathers of Jacksonville, Ark.; 
and one brother, the Rev. Jody Overton of Roanoke.
   Memorial donations can be made to the Boyd Overton Scholarship Fund, University of

David Earl Ratliff Sr.

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for David Earl Ratliff Sr., 48, of Woodland will be at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Cox Chapel United Methodist Church in 
Maplesville, with the Rev. U. L. Ratliff officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mr. Ratliff died Monday, Aug. 16, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident in 
Cleburne County.
   He was born in Jefferson County on Sept. 18, 1950, son of John David and Elizabeth 
Collins Ratliff.  He had been employed with HMC Bridge Construction and was a Baptist.
   Survivors include his wife, Pamela Ratliff of Woodland; a daughter, Daiquiri Ratliff of 
Woodland; and two sons, David Earl Ratliff Jr. and Kenneth Wayne Ratliff, both of 
Woodland.
   Mr. Ratliff will lie in state at the church on Wednesday for one hour beginning at 1 p.m.
   Pallbearers will be family members.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Ella Rebecca Hayes Hurst

   (TALLASSEE) Graveside funeral services for Ella Rebecca Hayes Hurst, 92, of 
Tallassee, formerly of Roanoke, were at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Cedarwood 
Cemetery with the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating.
   Mrs. Hurst died Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Sunbridge Care and Rehab for Elmore in 
Elmore.
   She was born in Dawson, Ga., on April 14, 1907, daughter of Benjamin Franklin and 
Ella O. King Hayes.  She was a homemaker and a member of Roanoke First United 
Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Hurst.
   Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
   Memorial donations may be floral or can be made to Roanoke First United Methodist 
Church, P. O. Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Harold Ford Shelnutt

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Harold Ford Shelnutt, 62, of Roanoke were at 4 p.m. 
Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Stoney Halsey and 
Rev. Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial was at Center Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Shelnutt died Monday, Aug. 16, at University Hospital in Birmingham following a 
short illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Jan. 7, 1937, son of Howard and 
Amy Townley Shelnutt.  He had been employed at Amoco Fabrics and was a veteran of 
the Korean Conflict and a member of Springfield Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Macie Parmer Shelnutt of Roanoke; his mother, Amy 
Shelnutt of Roanoke; one daughter Donna Arrington of Roanoke; three sons, Danny 
Shelnutt, Dennis Shelnutt and Dale Shelnutt of Roanoke; two step-daughters, Marsha 
Fisher of Roanoke and Dianne Gooden of Wadley; one step-son, Terry Green of Auburn; 
a sister, Ruth Snider of Roanoke; two brothers, Grover Shelnutt of Valley and Perry 
Shelnutt of Wadley; and 10 grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were David Fisher, Ralph Gooden, Tim Edmondson, Harold Arrington, 
Danny Ray and Terry Green.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Jimmy Walker

   (LAFAYETTE) Jimmy Walker, 58, of LaFayette died Friday, Aug. 13, at his residence.
   Mr. Walker was born in Randolph County on July 19, 1941.  He owned and operated 
Walker's Restaurant in LaFayette.
   Funeral services were at Rock Springs Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, 
with burial in the church cemetery.
   The Rev. Bill Choate and the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiated.
   Survivors include his wife, Judy Walker of LaFayette; and daughter, Julianne Walker of 
Eufaula.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Helen Reese

   (WADLEY) Helen Reese, 50, of Wadley died Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include her father, Charles Reese of Wadley; a daughter, Kimberly LaWanda 
Adamson of Wadley; two brothers, Charlie Lewis Reese of Roanoke and Kenny Reese of 
Wadley; and three sisters, Margeret Battle of Wadley, Janette Swint of Decatur and Lois 
Reese of LaGrange, Ga.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Essie Mae Reese.
   Ms. Reese was a devoted member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Wadley.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Earl Stephens

   (VALLEY) Earl Stephens, 73, of Valley died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at his residence.
   Mr. Stephens was born Dec. 15, 1925, in the Stroud community.  He was a U.S. Marine 
Corps veteran of World War II and retired from West Point Stevens' Shawmut Mill after 
48 years with the company.  He was a member of Shawmut First United Methodist 
Church.
   Surviving are his wife, Frances Perry Stephens; two daughters, Sheree S. Bailey of 
Lanett and Tammy S. Reaves of Valley; a sister, Faye Quinley of Foley; four brothers, 
Dewey Stephens, Wade Stephens and Paul Stephens of Stroud and Johnny Stephens of 
Valley; and five grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Shawmut First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 
Aug. 17, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Robert Lancaster, the Rev. Rusty 
Letson and the Rev. Eugene Boyett officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice or Shawmut First United 
Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Dominique Donnell Holliday

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for infant Dominique Donnell Holliday, 6 months old, of 
Roanoke were Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at 3 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church with the 
Rev. Quintin E. Tibbs officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   The baby died Tuesday, Aug. 10, after an extended stay at University of Alabama 
Medical Center, Birmingham.
   Survivors include her father, Gregory Reed of LaGrange, Ga.; mother, Tamika Holliday 
of Roanoke; twin sister Unique Evette Holliday of Roanoke; grandparents, Peggy and 
Ralph Trammell and James Edward and Bobby Dell Holliday, all of Roanoke; and two 
uncles.

Dicie B. Gosdin

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Dicie S. Gosdin, 82, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Douglas 
Turner officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Gosdin died Monday, Aug. 23, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Gosdin was born Dec. 28, 1916, at 
Woodland, daughter of Shell W. and Verdie Green Smith.  She was a member of First 
Baptist Church, Roanoke, and had worked as a supervisor with Palm Beach Company.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Blake Gosdin.
   Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Woodrow Thompson of Woodland and Mrs. Charlie 
Ray Kirby of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers will be Floyd French, Tommy Yarbrough, Jimmy McKinney, John Tinney, 
Bob Edwards and John Landers.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Thomas Gay Holloway

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Funeral services for Thomas Gay Holloway, 53, of Franklin, Ga., 
were Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Revs. 
Keith Runels, Jimmy Runels and David Bryan officiating.  A vocal rendition of "Daddy's 
Hands" was presented by Sunshine Holloway.
   Serving as pallbearers were Jimmy Daniel, John Daniel, Nathan Hutchinson, Mike 
Alsabrook, Bobby Gladney and Jake Cannon.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Holloway was born May 3, 1946, in Randolph County, to the late James Robert 
Holloway and Leola Wright Holloway.  He had been employed by Franklin Aluminum 
Plant as a packing and shipping clerk.  He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a

   He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margie Caldwell Holloway; a daughter, Tonya 
Holloway; and a son, Timothy Holloway, all of Franklin; five sisters, Ann Furgerson, Mary 
Alsabrook and Thelma Hardy of LaGrange, Ga., Jimmie Garza of West Point, Ga., and 
Virginia Gladney of Franklin; three brothers, Robert Holloway and Burl Holloway of 
Franklin and Ray Holloway of Rock Mills; and one grandson.

Thomas H. Bradley

   (WEDOWEE) Graveside services for Thomas H. Bradley, 88, of Wedowee were 
Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, with the 
Rev. Ricky Emery officiating.
   Mr. Bradley died Thursday, Aug. 19, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mr. Bradley was a native of Randolph County, born on May 18, 1911, son of John 
Wyatt and Dolly Yates Bradley.  He retired from Batson and Cook Company and also was 
a farmer.  He was a Baptist by faith.
   Mr. Bradley is survived by his wife, Novella Abner Bradley of Wedowee; a daughter, 
Deborah Sellers of Roanoke; five sons, Whitman Bradley of Valley, Donald Bradley and 
Larry Bradley of Wedowee, Ford Bradley of Rainsville, and Victor Bradley of Cosby, 
Tenn.; one sister, Sue Kirby of Roanoke; one brother, H. S. Bradley of Wedowee; 
14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jerry Rice, Lamar Payne, Calvin Bailey, Fay Williams, Bob Kirby and 
Joe Tom Bradley.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Patricia Robinson-Raspberry

   (BIRMINGHAM) Patricia Robinson-Raspberry, 29, of Birmingham died Wednesday, 
Aug. 11, 1999 at Cooper Green Hospital, Birmingham.
   Survivors include her father, James Louis Robinson Jr. of Gadsden; her mother, Mary 
Elizabeth Robinson of Birmingham; her grandparents, James Robinson Sr. of Cleveland, 
Ohio, and Jesse and Vinnie Wilson of Birmingham; a son Michael Raspberry Jr. of 
Birmingham; two daughters, Jessica Robinson and Gina Raspberry of Birmingham; and 
two brothers, Daryl Robinson of Union Springs and James Paul Robinson of Utah.
   A native of Birmingham, Ms. Raspberry was a lifelong member of 6th Avenue Church in 
Birmingham.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Elmer Gordon Beaird

   (LAKE CHARLES, La.) Elmer Gordon Beaird, 90, of Lake Charles, La., died 
Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at a local hospital.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Hixson Funeral Home Chapel, Moss 
Bluff, La., with the Rev. Jack Clift officiating.  Burial was in Prien Cemetery, Lake 
Charles.
   A native of Chambers County, Ala., Mr. Beaird lived in Lake Charles since 1956.  He 
was a member of First Baptist Church of Moss Bluff.  He was a retired Electrolux vacuum 
cleaner salesman.
   Survivors include his wife, Sarah F. Beaird, a son, John E. Beaird, and a daughter, Jane 
Williams, all of Moss Bluff; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Hixson Funeral Home, Moss Bluff.

Charles Michael Lipham Sr.

   (FOLEY) Charles Michael Lipham Sr., 33, a native of Anniston and resident of Foley, 
died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley.
   Survivors include his wife, Margaret Lipham of Foley; a son, Charles M. Lipham Jr. of 
Foley; a daughter, Mary Louise Lipham of Foley; his father and step-mother, Charles Ray 
and Jane C. Lipham of Decatur; a brother, Tommy Ray Lipham of Pensacola, Fla.; and a 
sister, Lisa Jane Lipham of Decatur.

F. L. Ledford

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for F. L. Ledford, 75, of Roanoke, formerly of Atlanta, 
were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Barry Cooper officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Ledford died suddenly on Friday, Aug. 20, at Randolph County Hospital.
   Mr. Ledford was born in McCaysville, Ga., on Oct. 4, 1923, son of Fred and Minnie 
Mull Ledford.  He was a Baptist minister and a veteran of World War II.
   Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Hames Ledford of Roanoke; two sisters, Gwen 
Hayes of Atlanta and Evelyn James of Smyrna; and a grandson.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Leonard Eslin Earl

   (LINEVILLE) Funeral services for Leonard Eslin Earl, 65, of Lineville, will be at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. S. T. Janney 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Earl died Sunday, Aug. 22, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland.  
   He was born in Randolph County on Dec. 19, 1933, son of Leonard and Evelyn Pitts 
Earl.  He had been self-employed as a barber and was a member of New Hope Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Faye Clark Earl of Lineville; two daughters, Nancy Shafer 
and Vanda Ussery of Roanoke; one son, Lee Earl of Roanoke; two sisters, Dot Ward, and 
Mildred Lipham of Roanoke; one brother, Willard Earl of Roanoke; six grandchildren and 
four great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will continue on Wednesday until the time of the funeral.
   Pallbearers will be Kevin Ward, Jason Ussery, Jamie Ussery, Tom Story, Ben Arrington 
and Brian Overton.

Gertis 'Tot' Billingsley

   (LAFAYETTE) Gertis "Tot" Billingsley, 76, of LaFayette died Friday, Aug. 20, at 
LaFayette Nursing Home.
   Mr. Billingsley was a retired truck driver for the Royal Crown Cola Bottling Company 
of Columbus, Ga.; and a member of the Silmon Mortuary staff.
   Survivors include seven daughters, Barbara Higgins, Bettye Billingsley, Gloria Story and 
Lillie Wright of LaFayette, Laura Billingsley Carr of Dadeville, Dorothy Carr of Camp 
Hill, and Sadie Spence Seymore of Bronx, N.Y.; three sons, Freddie Billingsley of 
LaFayette, Eddie Billingsley of Boston, Mass., and James W. Hughley of Atlanta; four 
sisters, Irene James and Addie K. Ratchford of LaFayette, Ella P. Caldwell of Baltimore, 
Md.; and Maude Zachery of Springfield; 52 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
   Services for Mr. Billingsley were Monday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at St. John United 
Methodist Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. Chester Holloway officiating.  Interment was 
in the St. John cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Hubert Leverette, Wheeler Barker, Gene Foreman, Benny Higgins, 
James Hudson and Elton Huguley.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Ailers R. Watson

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Ailers R. Watson, 77, of Wedowee will be at 11 a.m. 
Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Heaven Bound Holiness Church, with the Revs. Freddy 
Whitley and Larry Hudson officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Watson died Monday, Aug. 23, at his residence.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Jan. 16, 1922, son of William 
Ailers and Cora Palmer Watson.  He was employed at West Point Pepperell and was a 
veteran of World War II and a member of Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Watson of Roanoke; four daughters, Mable Martin 
and Martha Clack of Roanoke, Patricia Watson of Union City, Ga., and Sandra Sheppard 
of Wedowee; three sons, Robert Earnest and James Watson of Roanoke and Vernon 
Watson of Alexander City; a stepson, Randy Williams of Anniston; four sisters, Nellie 
Posey, Lorrine Allen and Nora Meeks of LaGrange, Ga., and Rachel Williamson of 
Hogansville, Ga.; 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Johnny Kosza, Benjy Sheppard, Greg Sheppard, Willis Smith, Jason 
Martin, Robby Earnest and Jack Sheppard.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.
