OBITUARIES:

Kathryn Carpenter

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Kathryn Carpenter, 79, of Wedowee, will be Thursday, Dec. 
5, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Noon Day Christian Church, with the Revs. Harold Bonner and Gary 
Henderson officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Miss Carpenter died Monday, Dec. 2, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   Miss Carpenter was a Randolph County native, born June 29, 1923, daughter of Hallard 
and Annie Cora Lee Wilson Carpenter.  She was a member of Noon Day Christian Church 
and worked as an elementary school teacher.  She was a member of Christian Women's 
Club, The Eastern Star, Keenagers, Woodmen of the World, and Wedowee Senior 
Citizens Group.  She also worked with the annual Bike Hike and was a volunteer worker 
at New Hope School.  For more than 40 years she wrote the New Hope News section for 
the Leader and also a number of wedding announcements.
   Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Evelyn C. Smith of Anniston, and several nieces and 
nephews.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, on Wednesday, 
Dec. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m.  Miss Carpenter will lie in state for one hour at the church 
beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday.
   Pallbearers will be Dave Strain, Blair Parker, Buddy Glisson, Johnny Adcock, Larry 
Strain and Doug Moore.  Honorary pallbearers will be Wedowee Senior Citizens Group.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Robert C. Yates

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Robert C. "Bob" "Slick" Yates, 71, of Wedowee will be 
Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Midway United Methodist Church, with the Revs. 
Johnny Foster, Ed Grooms and Cloyse Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Yates died Monday, Dec. 2, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Yates was born Aug. 5, 1931, son of Rufus Alvin and 
Lillie Mae Prescott Yates.  He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, 
Wedowee Masons and the Cattleman's Association and was an Army veteran of the 
Korean War.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Rufus B. Yates.
   Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Carter Yates; three sons, Dan C. Yates of Moody, 
Allen Yates of Fayetteville, N. C., and Kenneth Yates of Roanoke; the three 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Tool Pool, Clay Yates, Kody Yates, Rayford Edmondson, W. C. 
Pate, Delmour Green and Rex May.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Randolph County 
Class of 1951.
   Mr. Yates will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.
   Memorials may be floral or the family requests donations be made to the American 
Cancer Society.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Billie Kay Drumwright Kirby

   Billy Kay Drumwright Kirby, 50, died at her home on West Point Lake on Saturday, 
Nov. 30, 20002.
   Mrs. Kirby was born on July 30, 1952, in Nashville, Tenn., daughter of Bill and Lennie 
Mae Palmore.
   She is survived by her husband, Rick Kirby of Roanoke; one son, Tom Drumwright of 
Valley; one daughter, Terri Benitez of Hopewell, Va., two brothers, Mike Palmore and 
Rickey Palmore of Montgomery; and her parents, Bill and Lennie Mae Palmore of 
Wetumpka.
   Services were at Pine View Memorial Garden Cemetery, Wetumpka, on Monday, Dec. 
2, at 2 p.m.
   Arrangements were by Gassett Funeral Home, Wetumpka.

Ronald Ware Sr.

   (ROANOKE) Ronald Ware Sr., 54, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, 
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were Monday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at Wehadkee Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Elijah Jackson, pastor, officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Ware was a native of Roanoke and owner of Ron's Barbecue.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Caroline Ware of Roanoke; one son, Ronald Ware Jr. 
of Roanoke; three daughters, Ms. [sic - Mr.] Stacy Moore of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. Vickie 
Ware Heard of Wedowee and Mrs. Kimberly Lovett of Roanoke; one sister, Ms. Mary Dennis 
Holliday of Roanoke; one brother, Charles Ware of Roanoke; his father-in-law, Amos Foster Sr. 
of Roanoke; eight sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Joby Lee Traylor

   (ROANOKE) Services for Joby Lee Traylor, 26, of Roanoke were Sunday, Dec. 1, 
2002, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. J. D. Bearden and Donald 
Spradlin officiating.  Burial was at Mt. Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Traylor died Wednesday, Nov. 27, from injuries sustained in an accident in 
Chambers County.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Traylor was born June 4, 1976, son of Carson 
and Angela Holloway Traylor.  He was a former employee of WestPoint Stevens.  He 
was preceded in death by his grandparents, Floyd Holloway and Mr. and Mrs. Elbert 
Traylor.
   Survivors include his wife, Christy Hand Traylor of Roanoke; a daughter, Victoria 
"Tori" Traylor and a son, Joby Lee Traylor Jr. both of Roanoke; his mother, Angela 
Traylor and Billy Towler of Roanoke; his father and stepmother, Carson and Ann Traylor 
of Woodland; his grandmother, Virginia Holloway of Roanoke; and a brother, Robert 
Traylor of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Dale Windsor, Gary Rice, Jeremy Holloway, Russell Holloway, Jamie 
Gray, Tony Pool, Wayne Edmondson, Eric Payne, Steve Snow and Chris Kirby.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Edward Manley

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Edward Manley, 65, of Roanoke, formerly of Brooks, 
Ga., were Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Harold Bonner officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Manley died Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Columbus Regional Medical Center, 
Columbus, Ga.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Manley was born Feb. 5, 1937, son of Sam and Mittie 
Mae Veal Manley.  He retired from the city of East Point, Ga., as a superintendent of 
vehicle maintenance.  He was a veteran of the Air Force during the Korean War.
   Survivors include his wife, Linda Bennett Manley of Roanoke; one sister, Sara Lashley 
of Wadley; and two brothers, S. A. Manley of Roanoke and Randy Manley of Riverdale, 
Ga.
   Pallbearers were Jack Manley, Rodney Manley, Steven Manley, Joe Nolen, Stanley 
Manley, Jeff Manley, Nick Manley, Kenny Manley, Zack McGill and Mike Manley.
   The family requests memorial donations be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities 
of West Georgia Inc., 1959 Hamilton Road, Columbus, GA 31904.

Gulema Harrod Haynes

   (WOODLAND) Services for Gulema Harrod Haynes, 95, of Woodland were Tuesday, 
Dec. 3, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roger Woodard and Bobby 
Kirby officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Haynes died Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Benton House in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
   Mrs. Haynes was born Oct. 13, 1907, at Dot in Carroll County, Ga., daughter of John 
Turner Harrod and Ella Kaylor Harrod.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Crawford Clift Haynes, and a daughter, Eloise Haynes Rice.  She was also preceded in 
death by 12 brothers and sisters.
   Survivors include three daughters, Lenda Haynes McCain of Panama City, Fla., Roberta 
Haynes Paul of Birmingham and Rosalie Haynes of Washington, Ga.; a son, Ralph 
Crawford Haynes of Alpharetta, Ga., and 12 grandchildren.
   Grandsons who served as pallbearers were Allen Haynes McCain of Birmingham, 
Charles Rice, Alan Rice and Tracy Rice of Anniston, Jordan Haynes of Atlanta, Bradford 
Haynes of Hattiesburg, Miss., Terrell Paul of Birmingham and James Paul of Cullman.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and Wilson Funeral Home, 
Ft. Walton Beach.

Travis M. Willingham

   (BAINBRIDGE, Ga.) Travis M. Willingham Jr., 72, of Bainbridge, Ga., died 
Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Jacksonville, Fla.
   Services were at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, at Ivey Funeral Home Chapel, Bainbridge, 
with burial at Roselawn Memory Gardens in Bainbridge.  The Rev. Jimmy Dean officiated.
   Mr. Willingham was born April 4, 1930, in Roanoke, son of Travis Monroe Willingham 
and Ista Knight Willingham.  He graduated from Randolph County High School in 1949 
and later from Auburn University.  He married Sara Batson in 1953.  He was a U.S. Army 
veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired accountant with Uniroyal Tire Company, and a 
member of the Baptist faith.
   Survivors include his wife, Sara Willingham of Bainbridge; a daughter, Cathi W. Galpin 
of Bainbridge; two sisters, Eloree Moses and Mary White of Wedowee; and two 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jamie Walker, Wendell McLain, John Wheeles, Melvin Donley, Derry 
Singleton and Bobby Burford.
   Arrangements were by Ivey Funeral Home, Bainbridge.

Janie Gates

   (ROANOKE) Janie Gates, 58, of Roanoke died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Hospice 
LaGrange, LaGrange, Ga.
   Services were Monday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Delta, with 
the Rev. Doug McClure and the Rev. L. J. Wright officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.  
   Mrs. Gates was born in Randolph County on April 17, 1944, daughter of the late Mrs. 
S. L. Potts Roundtree.  She was a devoted member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, which 
she joined at an early age.  All of her life she was a respected member of the 
neighborhoods known as "Youngstown" and "New Town" in Roanoke.  Mrs. Gates 
succumbed after an intermittent and lengthy struggle with cancer.
   Survivors include her husband, Willie Lewis Gates of Roanoke; one son Willie Potts of 
Roanoke; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Gouch of Atlanta and Mrs. Elizabeth Pittman, Ms. Linda 
Holloway and Mrs. Brenda Dukes of Roanoke; three uncles; three aunts; and five 
grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Charlie Lorenzo Patillo

   (WOODLAND) Charlie Lorenzo Patillo, 80, of Woodland died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, 
at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include six daughters, Helen Nunn and Barbara Houston of Woodland, Nancy 
Green and Inell Roundtree of Graham, Charlie Mae Nunn of Hawk and Bessie Stegall of 
Roanoke; 58 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces nephews, other 
relatives and friends.
   Mr. Patillo was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Patillo; three daughters, 
Sarah Francis Clark, Shirley Tolbert and Mary Berry; and a son, Junior Patillo.
   Services for Mr. Patillo were Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. at Faith, Hope and Charity 
Baptist Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. B. J. Jackson officiating.  Interment was in East 
Roanoke Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon & Son Funeral Services, Roanoke.

Eddie Orion Cash

   (WADLEY) Services for Eddie Orion Cash, 74, of Wadley were Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, 
at 2 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Christian and Wayne Woods 
officiating.  Burial was in Wadley City Cemetery.
   Mr. Cash died Thursday, Nov. 28, at U.A.B. Hospital in Birmingham. 
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Cash was born April 25, 1928, son of Joseph Jackson 
and Iola McCormick Cash.  He was a member of Wadley Baptist Church and was a retired 
bus driver with Randolph County Schools.  He also had worked with WestPoint 
Pepperell.
   Survivors include three daughters, June Woods of Oxford, Jill Murphy of Vidalia, Ga., 
and Lisa Murphy of Memphis, Tenn.; one son, Randy Cash of Wadley; two sisters, Katie 
Joe Robertson of Opelika and Dorothy Hicks of Belle Chase, La.; one brother, Byron 
Cash of Columbus, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chris Murphy, Mike Murphy, Wayne Woods, Brian Woods, Jason 
Taylor and Cash Murphy.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Lillie Crowder Brown

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lillie Crowder Brown, 90, of Roanoke were Sunday, Dec. 1, 
2002, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church, with the Revs. Floyd Carmack and Maynard 
McGinty officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Brown died Friday, Nov. 29, at her residence.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 9, 1912, daughter of John E. 
and Cassie Tomlin Crowder.  She was a member of Antioch Congregational Christian 
Church.
   Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Baugus of Smyrna, Ga.; two sons, Clark 
Brown and Ellis Brown of Roanoke; two sisters, Jeanette Awbrey of Gainesville, Fla., and 
Evelyn Turner of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Regenia D. Bowen

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Services for Regenia D. Bowen, 50, of Alexander City were 
Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Radney's Funeral Home.  The Rev. 
Kenneth Neeley and Randy Anderson officiated.  Burial was in Hackneyville Cemetery.
   Mrs. Bowen died Saturday, Nov. 30, at her residence.
   She was born on Oct. 9, 1952, in Rock Mills to William Jep and Betty Lee Davis 
Brown.  She worked in medical insurance billing at Lakeshore Community Hospital in 
Dadeville.
   She is survived by one son, Bradley Bowen of Alexander City; three daughters, Leigh 
Ann Piazza and Tonya Barrett of Sylacauga and Bridget Wilson of Millbrook; one 
brother, Larry Brown of Alexander City; and five grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Frankie Bowen; one son, Frankie 
Bowen II; and her parents.
   The family asks that memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society, 
1599 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 or to Children's Harbor, One Our Children's 
Highway, Alexander City, AL 35010.

Eura Lipp Barbee

   (HINESVILLE, Ga.) Eura L. Barbee, 76, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Winn Army 
Community Hospital after a short illness.
   Mrs. Barbee was a native of Randolph County, Ala., and had lived the past 40 years in 
Hinesville.  She served for a number of years as an Avon representative and was a member 
of First Baptist Church in Hinesville.  Mrs. Barbee worked with the Cancer Survivors of 
American Cancer Society.
   Survivors include four sons, John and Dennis Barbee of Hinesville, Perry Barbee of 
Jacksonville, Fla., and James Barbee of Atlanta; a brother, Tom Lipp of LaGrange; 
18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at First Baptist Church in Hinesville with 
the Revs. Chuck Owens and Ted Hopkins officiating.  Burial was in Oglethorpe Memorial 
Park.
   Pallbearers were her grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Carter Funeral Home, Oglethorpe Chapel.

Charlie Mason Gregg

   (PANAMA CITY, Fla.) Services for Charlie Mason Gregg, 82, of Panama City, 
formerly of Lineville, were Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral 
Home.  The Revs. Warren Wright and Edward Smitherman officiated.  Burial was in 
Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
   Mr. Gregg died Monday, Nov. 26, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary George Gregg of Panama City; a son, Mike Gregg of 
Panama City; and two grandchildren.
   Mr. Gregg was born in Randolph County, had lived in Panama City since 1990, and was 
a former resident of Lineville.  He was a Navy World War II veteran and was retired from 
the timber industry.  He was a member of Spring Hill Christian Church in Lineville.

Milford 'Bud' Hubbard

   (VALLEY) Milford "Bud" Hubbard, 81, of Valley died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Mr. Hubbard was born in Randolph County on March 3, 1921, son of the late Nannie 
Lou Ferguson Hubbard and Erby Lee Hubbard.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World 
War II and was wounded in action.  He was retired as a self-employed carpenter and was 
a member of Central Baptist Church.
   Surviving are his wife, Alberta L. Hubbard of Valley; a daughter, Barbara Ann Edwards 
of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sons, Lamar Hubbard of Orlando, Fla., and Clarence Hubbard of 
Opelika; two sisters, Pearl Brown of Valley and Jeanette Haynes of Charlotte, N.C.; a 
brother, Robert Hubbard of Valley; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on 
Sunday, Dec. 1, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Shannon Mapp and the 
Rev. Ray Hammock officiated.
   The family asks that memorial donations be made to Central Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Judson Fincher

   (VALLEY) Judson Fincher, 92, of Valley died Monday evening, Nov. 25, 2002, at 
Bethany House in Auburn.
   Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral 
Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Steve York officiating.  Burial followed in Fairfax 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Fincher is survived by his daughter, Loretta Dobson of Opelika; his sister, Christine 
Cunningham of Wedowee; his brother, Staley Fincher of Auburn; four grandchildren, four 
great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
   Born May 19, 1910, in Randolph County, Mr. Fincher had been a resident of the Valley 
area for the past 70 years and was a retired employee of West Point Stevens Fairfax Mill 
with more than 40 years of service with the company.  He was a member of Fairfax First 
Baptist Church.  Mr. Fincher was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Myrtis 
Stanfield Fincher; his son, James Marion Fincher; his brother, Porter Fincher; and his 
sister, Nellie Rue Parker.  He was the son of the late Alice Bradley Fincher and Almond 
Joshua Fincher.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Fairfax First Baptist Church in 
his memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Maggie Herren

   (ROANOKE) Services for Maggie Herren, 83, of Roanoke were Saturday, Nov. 30, 
at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Teague officiating.  Burial 
followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Herren died Monday, Nov. 25, at Baptist Montclair Hospital in Birmingham.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Herren was born Sept. 16, 1919, daughter of Seaborn 
Isaac and Clestine McLeod Nolen.  She was a member of First Church of God.
   Survivors include her husband, Sidney Wilson Herren; three daughters, Margie Bowen 
and Louise Smith of Roanoke and Brenda Thrower of Opelika; three sisters, Nancy Nolen 
of Roanoke, Grace Philpott of Delevan, Wis., and Vena Ledbetter of Palmetto, Ga.; seven 
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Memorials may be floral or the family requests donations be made to First Church of 
God Building Fund, 681 Rock Mills Rd., Roanoke, AL 36274.

Thelma Mae Harmon Whaley

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Thelma Mae Harmon Whaley, 81, of Lineville were Friday, 
Nov. 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church with the Revs. 
Dorsey White and Roger Jones officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Whaley died Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Lineville Nursing Facility in Lineville.
   A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Whaley was born March 3, 1921, daughter of 
Taylor and Betty Sellers Craven.  She was a member of Union Hill Congregational 
Methodist Church.  Mrs. Whaley was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Harmon.
   Survivors include two daughters, Maudine Dewberry of Roanoke and Mary Ann 
Proctor of Lineville; five sons, Roy S. Harmon and Harvey Harmon of Roanoke, Gene 
Harmon of Valley, Lowell Harmon of Opelika and Donald Harmon of Newell; 27 
grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, 30 step-great-grandchildren 
and nine great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Billy Dewberry, Mark Harmon, Rex Whaley, Richard McCormick, 
Charlie Will Whaley and Ronnie McCormick.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Matthew Wayne Glass (infant)

   (ROANOKE) Services for infant Matthew Wayne Glass of Roanoke were Thursday, 
Nov. 28, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Horace Harper 
officiating.  Burial followed at Standing Rock Methodist Church Cemetery.
   The infant died Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
   The infant was born Nov. 16 and is survived by his parents, Wayne Glass and Kristy 
Campbell of Roanoke; paternal grandparents, Monroe and Hattie Glass of Roanoke; 
maternal grandparents, Roger Barfield of Cusseta and Paulette Barfield of Tampa, Fla.; 
one half-sister, Bailey Campbell and two half-brothers, Jonathan Wayne Glass and Mark 
Wayne Glass of Anniston.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Charlie East, 76, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, 
at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mr. East, born June 9, 1926, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of the late Jim and 
Lindy East.  Mr. East was retired from West Point Pepperell, Dunson Mill, with 50 years 
of service.
   Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Nadine East of LaGrange; two 
daughters, Mary Bourgeois of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Judy Mann of LaGrange; a 
son, Roger East of Hazelhurst; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, 
Christine Thomaston and Joyce Craven of Centralhatchee; and two brothers, Jesse East 
of LaGrange and David East of Centralhatchee.
   Graveside services for Mr. East were at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Shadowlawn 
Cemetery.  Brother Steve Williams officiated.
   The family may be contacted at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and 
Billy Mann, 427 Glass Bridge Rd., LaGrange.

Nancy Lucas Bryant

   (GREENVILLE, Ga.) Nancy Lucas Bryant, 83, of Greenville, Ga., died Friday, Nov. 
29, 2002, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Bryant was born June 4, 1919, in Randolph County, Ala., the daughter of the late 
John Robert and Mattie Lou Cook Lucas.  She was a member of First Christian Church of 
LaGrange and was a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry 
Cleveland Bryant; a sister, Mary Jim Shirey; and a brother, John Walter Lucas.
   Survivors include two daughters, Luticia Estes Black of Gay, Ga., and Karen Bryant 
Fineran of LaGrange; three sons, E. Travis Estes of Norwood, Mo., Mark Cleveland 
Bryant of Slocumb and Randy O. Bryant of Newnan, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, 16 great- 
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services for Mrs. Bryant were Monday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of 
Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the Revs. Hugh Vines and Roger Jones officiating.  
Interment was in the Bass Family Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Avery M. Cunningham

   (ATLANTA, Ga.) Services for Avery M. Cunningham, 77, of Atlanta, formerly of 
Roanoke, were Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery with a Masonic 
graveside service.
   Mr. Cunningham died Thursday, Dec. 5, in Atlanta.
   A Clay County native, Mr. Cunningham was born July 21, 1925, son of Jesse D. and 
Pearl Baker Cunningham.  He was a World War II Army veteran, and was wounded in 
action and received a Purple Heart Medal.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, a  Mason and a professional antique furniture auctioneer for 25 years.
   Survivors include his wife, Iva Delle Brewer Cunningham of Atlanta; one daughter, 
Rebecca Arnoff of Atlanta; two brothers, Gordon Cunningham of Chestertown, Md., and 
Austin B. Cunningham of Birmingham; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   The family requests any memorial donations be made to The American Lung 
Association.

Lydia Avery Hawkins

   (DENTON, N.C.) Services for Lydia Avery Hawkins, 95, of North Carolina, formerly of 
LaGrange, Ga., will be Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel with Elders Ben Keeble, Bailey Wilson and Kenneth Perry and the Rev. Jimmy 
Norred officiating.  Burial will follow at Wehadkee Cemetery.
   Mrs. Hawkins died Saturday, Dec. 7, at Center Clair Nursing Home in Denton, N.C.
   A native of Chambers County, Ala., Mrs. Hawkins was born Nov. 30, 1907, daughter of 
Harvey and Mattie Price Avery.  She was a member of Wehadkee Primitive Baptist 
Church and a faithful minister's wife for 52 years.  She was a cornerstone of her church 
until she became disabled.  She enjoyed quilting and cooking.
   Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Hawkins, and a 
daughter, Ruth Hawkins Patterson.
   Survivors include one daughter, Nora Hawkins Norred of Denton, N.C.; one son, 
Robert Lavell Hawkins of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother Elder Marshall D. Avery of 
Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren 
and several nieces and nephews.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 10 to 11 a.m. 
Thursday.
   Memorials may be floral or donations may be made to Wehadkee Cemetery Fund 
through Rock Mills United Methodist Church.
   Pallbearers will be Jeremy Bullington, Brad Geter, Danny Geter, Kelly May, Jay 
Donaldson and April Hawkins.

Mattie Grace Key

   (VALLEY) Mattie Grace Key, 93, of valley died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Lanier 
Nursing Home.
   Miss Key was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 1, 1909, daughter of the late 
Mary Catherine Littlefield Key and Thad S. Key.  She was a former employee of West 
Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill and also worked for the state of Alabama in the drivers 
license division.  She was a member of Fairfax United Methodist Church.
   Miss Key is survived by two nieces, Marjorie Burnside of Lanett and Carlene Key of 
Birmingham; one nephew, Tandy Key of Titus, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Frances Key of 
Birmingham; and several great-nieces and nephews.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 3 p.m. on 
Monday, Dec. 9, with burial in Fairfax Cemetery.  The Rev. Tom Roberts officiated.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Fairfax United 
Methodist Church.

Therman E. Whitmore

   (OXFORD) Services for Therman E. Whitmore, 73, of Oxford were Monday, Dec. 9, 
2002, at 11 a.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Buddy Nelson and Dr. Ron 
Ethridge officiating.  Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens cemetery.
   Mr. Whitmore died Friday, Dec. 6, at Baptist Medical Center Montclair.
   He is survived by his wife, Margie Whitmore of Oxford; two daughters, Wanda Wexler 
of Marietta, Ga., and Linda Dreher of Collierville, Tenn.; six brothers; two sisters; 
four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were William Cooper, Jesse Turner, Jesse Pearce, Loyd Kendrick, Wood 
Moore and Arthur Murray.
   Mr. Whitmore was resident of Calhoun County for the past 50 years.  He was a member 
and a deacon of Oxford First Baptist Church.  He had retired from Barber Dairies and was 
also a former mayor of Oxford.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Essie Lee Brown Taylor, 76, of Roanoke were Saturday,

and Ricky Emery officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Taylor died Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Taylor was born Aug. 2, 1926, daughter of Geames A. 
and Lillie I. Nichols Brown.  She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
   Survivors include three daughters, Anette Schwiebert of Williston, Fla., Betty Roth of 
Micanopy, Fla., and Linda Ayres of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, David Taylor of 
Wadley and Paul Taylor of Gainesville, Fla.; two sisters, Clara Cunningham of Roanoke 
and Helen Watson of Ashville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Merle R. Frosolono

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Merle R. Frosolono, 82 of LaGrange died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, 
at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mrs. Frosolono was born on Sept. 2, 1920, in Oakwood, Ga., daughter of the late Otto 
B. and Mae Hughes Reed.  She had lived in LaGrange since 1948 and had worked as 
bookkeeper for LaGrange Memorial Library.  She was a member of First Presbyterian 
Church.
   Graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at Shadowlawn Cemetery, with 
Dr. William Conine officiating.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mira Frosolono Gray of Benton, Ark.; three sons, Reed 
Frosolono of Roopville, Ga., Gary Frosolono of Newnan, Ga., and Brian Frosolono of 
LaGrange; and six grandchildren.

Lucille Holloway

   (ROANOKE) Lucille Holloway, 89, of Roanoke Healthcare Center died Saturday, Nov. 
30, 2002, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Services were Friday, Dec. 6, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Five Points, 
with the Rev. Tommie Finley officiating.  Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Surviving are one daughter, Catherine Moore of Atlanta; and four special nieces, Ora 
Tucker, Linda Morgan and Vera Drake of Roanoke and Mattie Wilson of Atlanta, Ga.
   Ms. Holloway was born in Chambers County on July 9, 1913, daughter of the late 
Ruben and Mary Gunn Trammell.  She was a member of Mount Pleasant United 
Methodist Church, Five Points.  Ms. Holloway resided in Panama City, Fla., for 50 or 
more years.  She worked as a nurse at Bay County Hospital in Panama City for 18 years, 
retiring in 1990.  In recent years, she returned to Roanoke to live with her nieces until 
her health failed.  She later resided at Roanoke Healthcare.
   Ms. Holloway was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Holloway; a daughter, 
Christine Bryant; three brothers, Jimmy Trammell, Frank Trammell and Martin Luther 
Trammell; and four sisters, Ora Tucker, Odessa Tyson, Elnora Davis and Mary Trammell.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

   (LANETT) Elizabeth Evans Veal, 83, of Lanett died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at the 
Brian Center in LaGrange, Ga.
   Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. EST at Rehoboth Baptist Church in 
Valley with Pastor Robert L. Jones officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Veal is survived by her son, Curtis Evans of Lanett; two grandchildren, three 
great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and one special niece.
   Born April 10, 1919, in Randolph County, Mrs. Veal was a member of Rehoboth 
Baptist Church.

Robert Lee Satterfield

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Robert Lee "Frog" "Pop" Satterfield, 56, died Monday, Dec. 2, 
2002.
   Mr. Satterfield, born Dec. 23, 1946, in Carrollton, Ga., was the son of Howard and 
Melba Satterfield.  He was employed at Kleentex in LaGrange and was a member of 
Friendship Baptist Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Sara Critcher Satterfield of Roanoke; his parents, Howard 
and Melba Satterfield; three sisters, Elizabeth Pearson, Sue Butler, and Martha Murry, all 
of LaGrange; a brother, Lamar Satterfield of Cape Hadris, N.C.; three step-daughters, 
Linda Walker of Roanoke and Vickie McCormick and Deborah McCormick of LaGrange; 
seven step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. in Friendship Baptist Church with 
the Rev. James Moon officiating.  Burial was in the Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville, 
Ga.

Rev. William Earl Fears

   (GADSDEN) Services for the Rev. William Earl Fears, 73, of Gadsden were Thursday, 
Dec. 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Attalla with the Revs. Lamar Davis 
and James Haskins and Ray Lewis officiating.  Burial was in Cameron United Methodist 
Church Cemetery in Madison County.
   Rev. Fears died Monday, Dec. 2.
   Survivors include his wife, Helen Fears of Gadsden; a daughter, Teresa Fears of Red 
Bay; two sons, Donald Fears of Atlanta and Neil Fears of New Orleans; and two 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were members of the Sunday school class of Hokes Bluff First Methodist 
Church.
   Rev. Fears retired after 40 years as a Methodist minister.  He served as pastor of Attalla 
First Methodist, Piedmont First Methodist, Roanoke First Methodist and Red Bay First 
Methodist churches.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Odell Fears; 
and a brother, Glenn Fears.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Methodist Children's Home.

Rosie Lois Heard Whitehead

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Rosie Lois Heard Whitehead, 84, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Dec. 3, 2002, at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mrs. Whitehead, born Aug. 4, 1918, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the 
late Warner Jackson and Fannie Hester Heard.  She had lived here most of her life and was 
a homemaker and member of the East LaGrange Baptist Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Raiford of LaGrange; a son, Jackson Smith of 
Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; four sisters, Clyde Smith 
and Lura Anderson of LaGrange, Lillie Stewart of Wetumpka, Ala., and Evie Barras of 
New Iberia, La.; a brother, Handley Heard of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel 
with the Rev. Lamar Womack officiating.  Entombment was in the Shadowlawn 
Mausoleum.

   (HEFLIN) Services for Vesta Williams Murphy, 83, of Heflin were Thursday, Dec. 5,

Theron Williams officiating.  Burial was in Heflin City Cemetery with Dryden Funeral 
Home in charge.
   Mrs. Murphy died Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include a daughter, Joyce M. Pollacia of Georgetown, Texas; two brothers, 
Griffin L. Williams and Theron H. Williams of Oxford; two grandchildren and five great- 
grandchildren.

   Mrs. Murphy was a native of Randolph County and had lived in Heflin most of her life.

Daisy Jewell Railey

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Daisy Jewell Railey, 81, of Carrollton, Ga., died Wednesday, 
Dec. 4, 2002, at her residence.
   Mrs. Railey, born Dec. 20, 1920, in Newell, was the daughter of the late Jim and Dovie 
Viola Cofield Traylor.  She had worked for the Callaway Mills Company and was a 
member of Rock of Ages Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two sons, Eugene Railey of Carrollton and Danny Railey of 
LaGrange, Ga.; a daughter, Joan Howard of LaGrange; two grandchildren and two great- 
grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Rock of Ages Baptist Church with the 
Rev. Randall Dunlap and minister Tom Howard officiating.  Burial was in Meadoway 
Gardens Cemetery.

Benjamin Alza 'B. A.' Williams

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Services for Benjamin Alza "B. A." Williams, 87, of Alexander 
City were at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Alexander City.  The 
Rev. Dr. Gerald Hallmark and the Rev. Skip Lowery officiated.  Burial was at Hillview 
Memorial Park.
   Mr. Williams died Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Russell Medical Center.
   He was a World War II veteran and a chief warrant officer in the Army Reserve.  Mr. 
Williams was employed in the Highway Department for 39 years.  He was a past president 
of the Civitan Club and Civitan of the Year.  He was also a member of First Baptist 
Church in Alexander City where he was a member of the Adult I Keystone Men's Sunday 
school class.  Mr. Williams, known as "B .A.", was a God-fearing man who loved the 
Lord.  He was a role model husband, father, daddy and friend.  He taught and lived good 
family values, honesty, responsibility and respect for others.  He was admired and 
respected by many people and was a friend to all that knew him.
   He is survived by his wife, Eloise Parker Williams of Alexander City; one daughter, 
Carol Pitchford of Alexander City; two sons, Thomas P. Williams of Alexander City and 
John A. Williams of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one 
sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, John Richard Williams and Ethel Giddins; four 
brothers, Dick Williams, Grady Williams, Kermit Williams and John Mason Williams, and 
two sisters, Mattie Alice Camp and Ethyln Allen.

   Mrs. Gregg was a native of Cherokee County, a former resident of Randolph County, 
and had lived in Lineville since 1960.  She was a homemaker and a member of Lineville 
Church of Christ.

   (PIEDMONT) Services for Mary Evelyn Evans, 85, of Piedmont were Saturday, Dec. 7,

   Mrs. Evans died Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Edward 'Gus' Ware

   (LAKELAND, Fla.) Services for Edward "Gus" Ware, 79, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of 
Wedowee, will be Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, 
Wedowee.  Burial will follow at Green's Chapel Cemetery.
   Mr. Ware died Saturday, Dec. 14, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland.
   Mr. Ware was a Randolph County native, born Oct. 16, 1923, son of Rufus Edward and 
Lucy Yarbrough Ware.  He was a member of Lake Gibson Methodist Church, a World 
War II Air Force veteran who served during the Korean War, as well as serving in the 
Navy and the National Guard.
   Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ware of Lakeland; one son, Rufus Edward Ware of 
Lakeland; one daughter, Cynthia Palmer of Lakeland; three sisters, Edyth Hardman of 
Riverdale, Ga., Bovine Mallory of Prattville, and Reba Cresser of Gadsden; and three 
grandchildren.

   Born in Roanoke, Mrs. Price retired from Perlis Truck Stop as a manager.  She was a 
member of Ramah Baptist Church and the Senior Citizen Club of Palmetto.

Palmetto; two sisters, Decie R. Strong of Riverdale, Ga., and Paula R. Dorsey of Milner,

   (FIVE POINTS) Johnny Thomas Kearce, 58, of Five Points, died Wednesday, Dec. 11,

Ga., with Len Spires Jr. officiating.  Interment was in Turnpike Cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Larry Cox, James Rawlins, Philip White, Mike White, Albert 
Cartwright and Jake Cartwright.
   Mr. Kearce was a native of Telfair County, Ga., son of the late John Jackson Kearce and 
Willie Pearl Rawlins Kearce.  He was reared by his grandparents, the late Joe Lee and Will

Ruby Spires of Alma, Ga., Sara Jo West of Dublin, Ga., and Helen Taylor of Naples, Fla.; 
one granddaughter; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Mozell Levens

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Mozell Wright Levens, 79, of Franklin, Ga., (Simpson community) 
died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, after several months of declining health.
   Mrs. Levens was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Heard County, Ga., to the late Estey Tooms 
and Ollie Yates Wright.  She was retired from Franklin Aluminum Company, where she 
worked in the packing and shipping department, and was a member of New Springs 
Methodist Church.
   Services for Mrs. Levens were Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at 4 p.m. at New Springs 
Methodist Church, with the Revs. Larry McDaniel and Jimmy Henry officiating.  
Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include three sons, Thomas W. Levens, Theron Levens and Tillman Levens of 
Franklin; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Evans of 
LaGrange; one brother, Hollis Wright of Franklin; and a number of other relatives and 
friends.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy W. Levens, and one son, Timmy G. 
Levens.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lucille Halsey Parmer, 78, of Roanoke were Monday, Dec. 
16, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Cecil Halsey 
officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Parmer died Friday, Dec. 13, at Wesley Terrace Retirement Center in Auburn.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Parmer was born March 5, 1924, daughter of Belom 
and Eucala Chappell Parmer.  She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
   Survivors include one daughter, Rhonda Parmer Jackson of Auburn; one son, Michael 
Bruce Parmer of Opelika; one sister, Helen Burke of Lineville; one brother, Buster Halsey 
of Demopolis; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Calvin Burke, Gary Burke, Craig Huey, Donald Huey, Ronnie Harper 
and W. D. Parmer.

George Gilbert Birdsong

   (LANETT) George Gilbert Birdsong, 60, of Lanett died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at East 
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Mr. Birdsong was a native of Chambers County, born March 3, 1942, son of Martha 
Lemerle Brand Birdsong and the late J. D. Birdsong.  He was a U.S. Army veteran and 
had been employed with the Playtex Corporation, having worked in the company's 
LaFayette and Newnan, Ga., plants.
   Surviving are his wife, Linda Thompson Birdsong; his mother; two sons, Greg Birdsong 
and David Birdsong of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters, Lynn Metler of Knoxville, 
Tenn., and Kimberly Williams of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; one brother, James 
Howard Birdsong of Houston, Texas; and two sisters, Bobbie Hester of Valley and Pat 
Hudson of Opelika.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on 
Sunday, Dec. 15, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  Dr. Paul Metler and the Revs. Jim 
Luttrell and Albert Thornton officiated.

Mary Overton Arrington

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Overton Arrington, 74, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, 
Dec. 9, 2002, at her residence.
   Mrs. Arrington, born Jan. 7, 1928, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the 
late John Henry Overton and Irene Davis.  She was a fashion sales manager for Roses Inc. 
and a member of Franklin Road Baptist Church.
   She is survived by three sons, Charles Arrington, Ronnie Arrington and Freddy 
Arrington, and a daughter, Pam McWhorter, all of LaGrange; 11 grandchildren; seven 
great-grandchildren; four brothers, Henry Overton of Tifton, Ga., Lee Overton of Atlanta, 
Paul Overton of Montgomery and Stanly Overton of Lanett; three sisters, Gladys Skipper 
and Lala Thraikill of LaGrange and Louise Cook of Franklin, Ga.
   Services for Mrs. Arrington were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy McMillian officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn 
Memory Gardens.

   (ASHLAND) Services for Byron "Doodle" Heath, 47, of Ashland were Thursday, Dec.

   Mr. Heath died Sunday, Dec. 8, in Anniston.
   Survivors include a daughter, Lasanda Baker of Wedowee; a son, Tony Heath of 
Piedmont; his mother, Mary Lee Heath Stone of Ashland; two sisters, Debra Sue Smith of 
Delta and Barbara Jackson of Cragford; four brothers, Sherwood Heath and Jimmy Heath 
of Cragford, Brinton Heath of Newsite and Johnny Heath of Ashland; three grandchildren; 
and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
   Pallbearers were Russell Sparks, Shannon Causey, Danny Heath, Adam Clark, Doug 
Heath and Lee Heath.
   Mr. Heath was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County.  He was a Baptist.  He was 
preceded in death by his father, Byron G. Heath; and two brothers, James "Roadmap" 
Heath and Horace Heath.

Wilma E. Hampton

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Wilma E. Hampton, 90, of Wedowee were Friday, Dec. 13, 
2002, at 2 p.m. at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta with the Rev. Don Paris officiating.
   Ms. Hampton died Tuesday, Dec. 10, Roanoke.
   A Dallas, Ga., native, Ms. Hampton was the daughter of the late Henry Marion Estes 
and Bertha Lorene Williams.  She was born Sept. 18, 1912.  Ms. Hampton had been a 
bookkeeper and was a former member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church and a member of 
Wedowee First Baptist Church.
   She is survived by a son, Robert W. Hampton of Wedowee; a brother, Dorsey Estes of 
Cummings, Ga.; a sister, Rachel Woodall of Mableton, Ga.; two grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.

John Edward Morgan

   (LANETT) John Edward Morgan, 87, of Lanett died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at 
East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Services were Friday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at Lanett First United Methodist Church with 
the Rev. Brian Wyatt officiating.  Burial followed in LaFayette City Cemetery.
   Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha Raney Morgan of Lanett; three 
daughters, Mary Elizabeth Lanier and Ellen M. Quinton of Lanett and Georgianne M. 
Cayton of Cordele, Ga.; his brother, Charles R. Morgan of Lanett; eight grandchildren; 
and eight great-grandchildren.
   Born June 30, 1915, in Randolph County, Ala., Mr. Morgan was a graduate of Lanett 
High School where he was editor of the Campus News.  He was retired from the former 
Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works, West Point Pepperell with 48 years service.  Mr. 
Morgan was very active in Lanett First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday 
school for more that 50 years.  He had been a member of the board of trustees, 
administrative board, delegate to the annual conference, lay speaker, men's club member 
and had been honored as Man of the Year for 1996.  Mr. Morgan had previously been a 
member of the Lanett Kiwanis Club and the Hexagon Club.  Mr. Morgan's hobbies 
included watch and clock repair, wood working, wood carving, gardening, fishing, and 
anything involving his grandchildren.  He was the son of the late Lula Beverly Morgan and 
James Thomas Morgan.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the following: The Rick

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Rupert W. Clegg died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mr. Clegg was born in Randolph County, Ala., but lived in LaGrange most of his life.  
He was a World War II veteran.
   Survivors include his wife, Frances Clegg; a daughter, Janet Rushin; a brother, George 
Harold Clegg; a sister, Mary Ingersoll; and four sisters-in-law.
   Memorial services were at Hospice LaGrange, Friday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m.

   (WADLEY) Stanley Birdsong, 40, of Wadley died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his 
residence.

with the Rev. Cornelius Reese Jr., the Rev. Tim Heard and the Rev. Tom Staples 
officiating.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his parents, Robert Jerry and Ara Will Birdsong of Wadley; two 
daughters, Tiffany Michelle Birdsong and Dometrice McGuire of Wadley; one son, 
Stanley Birdsong Jr. of Wadley; one step-son, Joseph Freeman of Wadley; one 
stepdaughter, Crystal Freeman of Wadley; one brother, Robert Birdsong of Wadley; three 
half-brothers, Steven Birdsong and Christopher Birdsong of Wadley and Stacy Birdsong 
of Ohio; four half-sisters, Pam Johnson, Maria Staples, Latrice Birdsong and Jerrica 
Birdsong, all of Wadley; seven grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
   There will be no visitation.  The body will be placed in the church for one hour before

   Mr. Adamson died, Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Briarcliff Nursing Home in Alabaster.
   Mr. Adamson was a native of Randolph County, born Oct. 15, 1921, son of John 
Wesley and Delia Bean Adamson.  He was a World War II veteran and a member of West 
Concord Baptist Church.
   Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Turner of Brierfield, Linda Medlock of Dallas, 
Texas, Gail Benefield of Pell City and Ellen Holder of Angier, N.C.; three sisters, Edna 
Ruth Moore and Evelyn Bradley of Wedowee and Laverne Dodson of Saks; five brothers, 
Buford Adamson, John Alford Adamson, Bobby Adamson and Dwayne Adamson, all of 
Wedowee and Comer Adamson of Florida; nine grandchildren and nine great- 
grandchildren.

   Mrs. Siggers died Saturday, Dec. 14, at Atlanta Medical Center.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Siggers was born April 27, 1918, daughter of 
Lonnie and Lola Waler Sears.  She was owner and operator of Eucal's Beauty Salon for 
65 years and was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include one son, John Siggers of Atlanta; one grandson; and a sister, Myrtice 
Carson of Smiths Station.

Lillian Christine F. Daniel

   (OPELIKA) Services for Lillian Christine F. Daniel, 89, of Opelika formerly of 
Woodland were Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, with 
the Revs. David Daniel and Steve Scoggins officiating.  Burial followed at the adjoining 
church cemetery.
   Mrs. Daniel died Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Care Center in Opelika.
   A native of Marshall County, Mrs. Daniel was born May 29, 1913, daughter of Charlie 
Issac and Mindy Owens Frachiseur.  She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Daniel.
   Survivors include one daughter, Bernice Hanson of Opelika; two sisters, Virginia Carnes 
and Maurine Haynes of Boaz; one brother, Otis Frachiseur of Albertville; 
five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wade Daniel, Steve Hanson, Patrick Daniel, Sam McAllister, Jerry 
Haynes, James McClain and Mathew Daniel.

Vivian Denney Rogers

   (EPHESUS, Ga.) Vivian Denney Rogers, 85, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at her 
residence in Ephesus, Ga.
   Services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, at Ephesus Baptist Church where she was a 
member.  Speakers included the Rev. Tyre Denney, Elder Homer Benefield, Rev. Gerald 
Rogers and Karen Rollins.
   Mrs. Roger[s] was born in Heard County, Ga., on July 15, 1917, to Newman Edgar and 
Willie Myrt Shadinger Denney.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a 
brother, Wilford E. Denney.  Mrs. Rogers was a graduate of Roopville School, and she 
attended the A&M School in Carrollton.  She served for many years on the West Georgia 
Regional Library Board and the Heard County Library Board.  Mrs. Rogers was also a 
charter member of the Ephesus Quilting Ladies and the Heard County Pilot Club.  She 
was an avid reader, quilter and Sacred Harp singer.
   She is survived by her husband, Lonnie Lee Rogers, to whom she was married on Nov. 
11, 1939.  She is also survived by five children, Karen Rollins and Karleen Williams of 
Bowdon, Ga., Paige Harrod and Denney Rogers of Ephesus and Sherry Lovvorn of 
Graham; a sister, Eris Muse of Carrollton, Ga.; four brothers, Felton Denney and Jimmie 
Denney of Carrollton, Max Denney of Bremen, Ga., and Earl Denney of Gainesville, Ga.; 
nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and numerous nieces and 
nephews.
   Grandchildren and their spouses served as pallbearers.  The Ephesus Quilting Ladies 
were Honorary escorts.  Sacred Harp signers [singers] sang before and during the service.
   Donations may be made to the cemetery funds at the following churches; Ephesus 
Baptist, Hopewell Primitive Baptist or Emmanus Primitive Baptist or to Tanner Hospice.

George E. 'Gene' Wood

   (JACKSONVILLE) Services for retired Lt. Col. George E. "Gene" Wood, 78, of 
Jacksonville were Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at 3 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and 
Cremation Center Chapel with full military honors and with the Rev. Bert Breland 
officiating.  Burial was in Jacksonville City Cemetery.
   Mr. Wood died  Thursday, Dec. 12, at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Sara Sutley Wood of Jacksonville; two sons, Ron Wood of 
Jacksonville and Randy Wood of Calhoun County; a sister, Lee Talley of Roanoke; and 
numerous nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Wood was a native of Roanoke and had lived in Jacksonville many years.  He was a 
member of the 1947 undefeated and untied Jacksonville State Teachers College Football 
team.  He was a 28-year Army veteran with service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  
He was a retired Alabama State Probation/Parole Officer.  He was a member of Vulcan 
Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36, 
Anniston Lodge 443 F&AM, and a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason.  He belonged to 
First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville and was a member of First Baptist Church 
of Jacksonville.

   (TALLADEGA) Services for Gover C. Spurling, 80, of Talladega will be at 2:30 p.m. 
Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the Talladega Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor S. T. 
Janney officiating.  Burial will follow in Mid-Way Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Spurling died Monday, Dec. 16, at Citizens Baptist Medical Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Spurling; eight sons, Grady Spurling, Tony 
Spurling, DeWayne Spurling, Danny Spurling and Charlie Spurling, all of Talladega, and 
James Spurling of Roanoke, Leslie Spurling of Lincoln and Benny Spurling of Anniston; 
two daughters, Mary Johnson of Talladega and Marsha Holmes of Talladega; 
21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

   Mr. Spurling was a native of Georgia, but lived most of his life in Talladega County.

Johnny Lewis Thomason

   (HEFLIN) Johnny Lewis Thomason, 67, of Heflin died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at his 
residence.
   Survivors include three brothers, Booker T. Bailey of Roanoke, Willie Frank Bailey of 
Wedowee and Samuel Bailey of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Lewis of 
Nashville, Tenn.; two stepsisters, Mrs. Peggy Ross and Mrs. Annie Ruth Alexander of 
Hampton, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Ocie Mae Bailey.
   Services were Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with Rev. Knight officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

Felice Ann Smith

   (ASHLAND) Graveside services for Felice Ann Smith, 31, of Ashland were Friday, 
Dec. 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Midway United Methodist Church in Wedowee, with Don

   Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Clay County from injuries sustained in an 
automobile accident.  She was a native of Carrollton, Ga., a former resident of Lanett, had 
lived most of her life in Randolph County, and had lived in Clay County for the past two 
years.  She was a clerk at the Shell Food Mart in Lineville, a licensed cosmetologist and 
real estate agent.  She was a graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke.
   She is survived by two sons, James Michael Burkett Jr. and Jaxson Quade Smith, both 
of Ashland; and their father Jack Smith of Wadley; her mother, Phyllis Pollard of Ashland; 
her father, Barry Edwards of Woodland; two brothers, Kaleb Knight of Valley and Seth 
Cofield of Wedowee; her maternal grandfather, Fred Pollard of Florida; her paternal 
grandmother, Birma Dean Edwards of Woodland; and her paternal grandfather, Robert 
Edwards of Woodland.  She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Myrtle Lee 
Pollard.
   Pallbearers were Jack Smith, Jerome Cofield, Tim Mathews, Kaleb Knight, Earl Grogan 
and Jamie Williamson.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Norman Gay Spears, 73, of Wedowee were Sunday, 
Dec. 22, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with Bro. Danny Rogers 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Spears died Friday, Dec. 20 at his residence.
   A Clay County native, Mr. Spears was born ____, 1929, son of William Grady and Ila 
Mae Daugherty Spears.  He was a veteran of the Air Force during the Korean War and 
was a member of Shiloh Delta Primitive Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Winnie Rae Young Spears; one daughter, Patty Gail 
Holloway of Wedowee; one son, Terry Spears of Roanoke; three sisters, Evelyne 
Robinson of Welbourne, Joyce Mozelle Summerlin of Northport, and Shirley Lyner of 
Ranburne; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Rayford Daughtery, Larry Spears, Tim Brown, Chad Lyner, Mike 
Summerlin, Christian Pool, Kendall Pool and C. D. Mitchell.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Sophia Daniel-McMiller

   (NEW ORLEAN, La.) Sophia Daniel-McMiller, 87, of New Orleans, La., died 
Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at her residence.
   Services were at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wedowee, on Friday, Dec. 20, at 
1 p.m., with the Rev. Henry Sterling officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. McMiller was a native of Randolph County and a member of Pleasant Grove 
Baptist Church.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton McMiller, and a daughter, Annie 
Ruth Black.
   Surviving are three brothers, Thomas Daniel of Lansing, Mich., John Daniel of 
Wedowee and James Daniel of Wadley; two sisters, Rachel Provience of New Orleans and 
Lillie Mae Harris of Cincinnati, Ohio; three granddaughters; two grandsons; and a host 
of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.
