Huddleston, 79, of 622 County Rd. 333, Wedowee, died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, in Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke, after an extended illness. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Providence Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gary Baugh and David Daniel officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Mrs. Huddleston is survived by two daughters, Mary Mote and Alice Strain of Wedowee; four sons, Joe Huddleston of Bellview, Fla., Lewis Huddleston and James Huddleston of Woodland and Roy Huddleston of Attalla; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a special son-in-law, Don Strain of Wedowee. Pallbearers were Richard Huddleston, John Mote Jr., Charles Mote, Donnie Strain, Tim Freed and Roy Traylor. Mrs. Huddleston was a native of Randolph County, born on Nov. 28, 1917, daughter of Seth Bowen and Martha Bailey Bowen. She was a homemaker and a member of Providence Baptist Church. Rd. 47, Newell, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997, in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, in Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Julian Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Jordan's Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Bowen is survived by one daughter, Earline Brown of Hogansville, Ga.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rosie Mae Brimer of Heflin, Jessie Mae Henson and Rae McDonald of LaGrange, Ga., and Ruby Williams of Atlanta; and one brother, Albert Bowen of Newell. Mr. Bowen was a lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was born on Feb. 9, 1919, son of Jim Bowen and Mattie Whaley Bowen. He was retired from the textile industry. Mr. Bowen will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and the family will receive friends after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, until after services. Earle Trent, 90, of Athens, Ala., died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, at Athens Convalescent Center. Funeral services were Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church, with interment in Roselawn Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Warren, the Rev. Dusty McLemore and Dr. Jim Moebes officiated. Survivors include two sons, Robert T. Trent and Jere C. Trent of Athens; a daughter, Patricia T. Scofield of Mountain Brook; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Called to the ministry and ordained in December, 1927, he began his life of service as pastor of Gibbs Chapel Baptist Church, Bostwick. He has served Alabama churches as pastor of Shawmut Baptist Church; First Baptist Church, Boaz; First Baptist Church, Opp; First Baptist Church, Roanoke; and First Baptist Church, Athens. Since retirement, he has served as interim pastor of a number of churches and was the associate pastor of the Lindsay Lane Baptist Church, Athens. He has served as associate in the Department of Education and Training of the Alabama Baptist Convention; as executive secretary of the Birmingham Baptist Association; and as director of missions of the Colbert-Lauderdale Baptist Association. He was president of the Alabama State Sunday School Convention, president of the Alabama Baptist Pastor's Conference, and first vice president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention. Memorials may be made to the Lindsay Lane Baptist Church Building or Library Fund, the Earle Trent Assembly or the Marie Pace Trent Missionary Residence. Mr. Maddox was born in Randolph County. His parents were the late Gus Maddox and Edna Maddox of Woodland. He is survived by one brother, Benford Alton Maddox of Woodland; one daughter, Gloria Dene Maddox Hilley of Anniston; five sons in Oregon; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His funeral was held Monday in Portland. There will be a memorial service for him at Bethel East Baptist Church, this Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. CDT for the friends and family members who could not attend his funeral. No flowers, please. __________ Lovie Pauley Williams (PALMETTO, Ga.) Lovie Pauley Williams, 84, of Palmetto, Ga., formerly of Randolph County, Ala., died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997. She was born on Oct. 6, 1912. Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughter, Ms. Clara Williams of Palmetto; a sister, Mrs. Annie Lyner of Alabama; two half-brothers, Howard Pauley and Gwin Pauley of Alabama; her step-mother, Mrs. Cassie Pauley of Alabama; a step-sister, Mrs. Florence Mitchell of Alabama; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Higgins & Son Chapel, Fairburn, Ga., with the Rev. Michael Hardy officiating. A former resident of Harlem, Ga., she was born Nov. 13, 1929, in Gordon County, Ga., daughter of Robbie and Delia Nelson. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church and had been employed as a bookkeeper with the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Cunningham. Burial was in Lanett City Cemetery. Mr. Akin died Thursday, Sept. 25, at Medical Center East in Birmingham after a brief illness. A Randolph County resident for many years, he was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Lanett, son of James and Annie Mangham Akin. He was a retired Liberty National Life Insurance agent, a World War II veteran, a member of the American Legion and a deacon of First Baptist Church of Roanoke. Survivors include his wife, Norma D. Akin of Roanoke; one daughter, Celia Prince of Birmingham; two sons, James A. Akin of Hueytown and Donald B. Akin of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Catherine Lemon of Gulf Shores and Adwina McCombs of Birmingham; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Lora Bailey Wilson of Woodland; one son, Rex Wilson of Woodland; two sisters, Elsie Wilson West of Talladega and Bernice Burson of Roanoke; and one brother, Joe C. Wilson and Frances Shaw Wilson. He retired from the Muscogee County School System of Georgia as a teacher. He was a Mason and a navy veteran of World War II. A graveside service for Frances Baggett Parrish, 89, of Jacksonville, Fla., was Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at 3 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Park in Auburn. Mrs. Parrish, who died Thursday, Sept. 25, in Jacksonville, was born May 5, 1908, in McDavid, Fla. She lived in Jacksonville for the past four years but spent most of her life in Auburn. She graduated from the Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee with a degree in home economics and taught home economics in the public schools of Auburn during the 1930s. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Parrish, who was county agent in Randolph County during the 1930s and 40s. During that time, Frances often sang with the Randolph County Quartet at funerals all over the county. From the late teens until about 1950, the group consisted of Floyd Wilson, Ellis Mathews, Hoyt McCarley, Charlie Kirby, Otis Fincher and others from time to time. She is survived by one son, Dr. John O. Parrish; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Anniston, and worked as a nurse in Anniston until her retirement and return to Roanoke. She was married to the late Charles W. Hatcher. "Bud" Young, 73, died at his home in Oxford on Monday, Sept. 29, 1997. Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Forestlawn Gardens, with the Rev. Charles E. Canterbury, Jr. officiating. Mr. Young, a native of Roanoke, was a member of the Roanoke Police Department for several years after service in World War II. He received the Purple Heart from wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge in that conflict. He had lived in Oxford for 44 year[s] and retired from the security force at Anniston Army Depot. Bud was preceded in death by a son, Willard F. Young, who was killed in the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Zane Cunningham Young of Oxford; a son, Paul Young, and a daughter, Charlotte Hubbard, both of Oxford; a sister, Lucile Spradlin of LaGrange, Ga.; a brother, "Hookie" Young of Roanoke; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ms. Foreman is survived by her daughter, Ervis Knight McKissic of Wedowee; her sister, Ida Moss of LaFayette; and ten grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, John Phillips; her mother, Georgia Ann Phillips; and her husband, James Charles J. C. Knight. A Chambers County native, he was born July 26, 1939, son of Joe Larkin and Dura Holloway Lane. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and had lived in Seattle for 20 years before returning to this area. Survivors include three sons, Don McKay of Talladega, Jerry McKay of Phenix City and Dale McKay of Wadley; two sisters, Kathrine Hanson of Foley and Winnie Harrison of Lynn Haven, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. McKay, a Randolph County native and longtime Clay County resident, graduated from Lineville High School and Jacksonville State University. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Mellow Valley for 25 years and was a member of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Lineville First United Methodist Church, the Sunshine Club and the Day Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert McKay. __________ Hayden William Green (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Hayden William Green, 73, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at his home after several years of declining health. Mr. Green was born in Randolph County on April 20, 1924, son of the late Thomas Emmett Green Sr. and Mrs. Lucy Noles Green of Woodland. He was a retired rural mail carrier and a former appliance serviceman for many years. A resident of LaGrange since 1947, he was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and a former member of Long Cane Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1943 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Tex Ergle officiating. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery. Mrs. Collier died suddenly on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at her home. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born July 23, 1923, daughter of Tom Luther and Cora Crisler Head. She had been employed as a medical secretary for Dr. Chester Primm and was a Silhouette Club charter member, a lifetime donator to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vinson Collier, her parents, and one brother, Tom Luther Head, Jr. Survivors include two daughters, Trudy Collier Freeman of Dadeville and Connie Collier of Cartersville, Ga.; one brother, John F. Head of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Connie Haas of Richmond, Va., and Rich Coe of Auburn. Pearson (Judy Starklin), died Oct. 17, 1997, at Wedowee Hospital. Mrs. Pearson resided in Chester, Pa., for 65 years and was employed as a domestic worker and beverage server. Her friends all knew Julia as Judy or Mom Judy. She was married to Edward F. Pearson of Chester, who preceded her in death. Survivors include three children, Kay C. Mr. Turner had been a prominent businessman for many years in Wetumpka, having owned and operated a grocery business for 33 years and a Dairy Queen for more than ten years. He was a long-time member and deacon of Wetumpka First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on many committees. He moved to Roanoke in 1981, where he was active in First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for several years. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Lallee Heard Turner. He is survived by one son, Thomas E. Turner of Coosada; one daughter, Joanne Turner Creasman of Coral Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. H. C. Locke of Ripley, Miss., and Mrs. J. E. Warren of Hoover; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Thomas Spears, 88, of LaGrange, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at Hospice LaGrange. The funeral service was conducted Saturday afternoon, Oct. 25, at Highway Congregational Methodist Church in Randolph County. The Rev. Vernon Willis and the Rev. Wayne Jetton officiated. Walker Sr., 73, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at the home of his son David in Sanderson, Fla., after an extended illness. Mr. Walker was born in Moniac, Ga., on March 10, 1924, son of the late George R. Walker and Marian M. Parker. He lived most of his life in Jacksonville, Fla. Survivors include his children, David Walker Jr. of Sanderson, Daniel Walker of Jacksonville and Alicia Young of Roanoke; a step-daughter, Georgeanna Troup of Middleburg, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren. Mrs. Griffin was born in Coffee County on Aug. 25, 1929. She graduated from Chambers County High School in 1947 and was retired from the Chambers County Board of Education. She had also worked at Valley Freeze Plant and Playtex. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, James A. Griffin of Bibby's Ferry; one son, Jimmy Griffin of Huguley; two daughters, Barbara Elliott of Bibby's Ferry and Elaine Stone of Abanda; one sisters [sic], Joan Burdett of Roanoke; her step-mother, Faye Lamberth of Ashland; four granddaughters; one grandson; and two great-granddaughters.
