OBITUARIES:

Annie Kate Askew

   (ROANOKE) Annie Kate Askew, 56, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, 
at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Miss Askew was born May 9, 1946.  She is survived by one brother, Johnny Askew of 
Dothan; one sister, Linda Bailey of Roanoke; a special niece, Tammie Brooks of Roanoke; 
three other nieces and five nephews.
   Services were Saturday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, Wadley, with 
the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Interment was in the Bailey Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon-Seroyer Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Jack Gordon Kitchens

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jack Gordon Kitchens, 80, of Roanoke were Thursday[,] 
Dec. 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Roanoke, with Bro. Douglas Turner 
and Bro. Al Perkins officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Kitchens died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mr. Kitchens was born Sept. 21, 1922, son of Edward 
Oliver and Jessie Lester Kitchens.  He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, a member 
and deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church, and owner and operator of Jack Kitchens 
Pontiac-Buick-GMC.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathaleen Bishop Kitchens of Roanoke; one daughter, 
Cindy Turner of Prattville; one son, Oliver Kitchens of Roanoke; four granddaughters; 
four great-grandchildren; one sister, Ida Delle Bowen of Manchester, Ga.; and one 
brother, Joe Kitchens of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Jimmy Peek, Jim McKinney, Ron Dewberry, Tommy Yarbrough, 
Evan Manning and Steve Spradlin.  Honorary pallbearers were the Men's Bible Class.
   The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church Christian Life 
Center, (827 Main Street, Roanoke).
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Joel Gene Foster

   (WEDOWEE)  Services for Joel Gene Foster, 64, of Wedowee will be Monday, 
Dec. 30, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. J. D. Collins and 
David Reaves officiating.  Burial will follow in Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Foster died Saturday, Dec. 28, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A lifelong Wedowee resident, Mr. Foster was born Dec. 15, 1938, son of Gay and 
I. V. Foster.  He had owned and operated Foster's Grocery for many years.
   Survivors include his wife, Joy M. Reaves Foster of Wedowee; one daughter, Stephanie 
Taylor of Wedowee; three sons, Brian Foster of Lineville, Chris Foster of Florida and 
Shannon Foster of Wedowee; a step-son, Brian Rollins of Heflin; two brothers, Doyle 
Foster of Anniston and Owell Foster of Bowdon, Ga., and nine grandchildren.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Deborah Miles Richardson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Deborah Miles Richardson, 47, of Roanoke were Friday, 
Dec. 27, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Williams 
officiating.  Burial followed at Center Chapel Cemetery.
   Mrs. Richardson died Thursday, Dec. 26, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Randolph county native, Mrs. Richardson was born Aug. 6, 1955, daughter of Eldon 
L. and Macie Rich Miles.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sammy Miles and 
Kenneth Miles, and a sister, Nelda Miles.
   Survivors include her common law husband, Bobby Smith; one daughter, Patricia 
Johnson of Roanoke; one son David Myrick of Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Frances 
Weathers of Roanoke and Sara Gooden of Opelika; two brothers, Tommy Miles of Iowa 
and Bobby Miles; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bobby Gooden, Steven Gooden, Benji Johnson, James Johnson, 
Justin Johnson and Pete Brown.  Honorary pallbearer was Chris Brown.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Hubert H. Veal

   (ROANOKE) Services for Hubert H. Veal, 85, of Roanoke, were Thursday, Dec. 26, 
2002, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Billy Ray, Gary 
Baugh and Ken Brooks officiating.  Burial followed in Potash Cemetery.
   Mr. Veal died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Mr. Veal was a native of Randolph County, born June 10, 1917, the son of Luther and 
Minnie Brown Veal.  He was [a] retired farmer and a member of Potash Church of God.
   Mr. Veal is survived by his wife, Mrs. Verna Fincher Veal of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Mary Jewell Smith and Elsie Wilson of Roanoke; one son, Gerald Veal of LaGrange, Ga.; 
three sisters, Florence Chase and Libby Lowery of Roanoke and Betty Miller; four 
brothers, Junior Veal, Monroe Veal, Carey Veal and Sam Veal, all of Roanoke; 
nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jason Veal, Tommy Messer, Ricky Veal, Frank Wilson, Ricky Veal, 
Virgil Veal and Randall Miller.

Mary E. Gilbert

   (BIRMINGHAM) Mary E. Gilbert, 82, of Birmingham died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, 
at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan, Ga.
   Services were at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28.
   Mrs. Gilbert was born April 18, 1920, in LaGrange, Ga., the daughter of the late Mr. 
and Mrs. H. M. Spivey.  A former resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Gilbert attended Knight- 
Enloe Elementary School and Handley High School.  She was a long-time Avon 
representative and a nutritional consultant for Jefferson County.  Mrs. Gilbert was a 
homemaker and a devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, 
where she was active in the McDonnan-Allen Sunday School Class.  She was a charter 
member of the Shades Mountain Quilters' Guild, a member of the Salvation Army 
Auxiliary, the Rock and Dale Garden Club and the Methodist Women's Club, and a 
member and past president of the Rose Strickland Study Club.
   She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frederick Gilbert Sr.; one daughter, Joy 
Burgess of Roanoke; two sons, Dr. Fred Gilbert Jr. of Newnan and Charles Gilbert of 
Paris, Texas; a brother, Harold Spivey of Weaver; seven grandchildren and six great- 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a sister, 
Margaret Webb of Roanoke, and a brother, John Spivey of Hickory, N.C.

Westa Wilhema Moses

   (FLORENCE) Westa Wilhema Moses, 87, of Florence died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 
at ECM Hospital.
   A graveside service will be Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church 
Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Mrs. Moses is survived by a daughter, Sandra Spahn of Bethlehem, Pa.; a granddaughter 
and two grandsons.
   Arrangements are by Elkins Funeral Home, Florence.

J. D. Hill Jr.

   (LINEVILLE) Services for J. D. Hill Jr., 77, of Lineville were Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, 
at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. L. C. Harris and Chester Craft 
officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Hill died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Clay County Hospital.
   He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret G. Hill of Lineville; two daughters, 
Jennetta Boring of Lineville and Avic Fargason of Mellow Valley; two sons, Fred Hill of 
Lineville and Greg Hill of Dalton, Ga.; three sisters, Vivian Arguella, Sarah Ann Griffin 
and Hilda Duke, all of Lineville; three brothers, T. F. Hill of Wedowee, Holly Hill of 
Talladega and Gene Hill of Lineville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Justin Faragason, Tony Hill, J. D. Hill III, Stacy Cantrell, Todd Smith, 
Terry Hill, Billy Dennison, and Billy Griffin.  Honorary pallbearers were the deacons and 
trustees of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
   A native of Randolph County, Mr. Hill lived in Atlanta and Marietta, Ga., for more than 
31 years and was the owner operator of S&M Clutch, a brake and clutch manufacturing 
company.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and member and trustee of Pleasant Grove 
Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Lineville.

Mr. Sherron Gene Benefield Sr.

   (ASHLAND) Mr. Sherron Gene Benefield Sr., 51, of Ashland died Monday, 
December 23, in Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Benefield was born May 23, 1952, son of Bill and Hazel 
Burroughs Benefield.  He had worked in construction most of his life.
   Survivors included his wife, Tammie Hunt Benefield of Roanoke; two daughters, Tiffany 
Clayton of Haton, Miss., and Cherish Benefield of Richmond, Va.; four sons, Ron 
Benefield of Augusta, W. Va., Ashley Benefield of Richmond, and Thomas Benefield and 
Craig Davidson of Roanoke; one sister, Brenda Johnson of Lineville; his maternal 
grandmother, Mrs. Earlie Burroughs of Wedowee; and four grandchildren.
   A private family memorial service will be held later.
   The family requests donations be made to Southern Care Hospice, 137 Franklin St., 
Alexander City, AL 35010.

Hattie Mae Cameron

   (ROANOKE) Services for Hattie Mae Cameron, 77, of Roanoke were Friday, Dec. 27, 
2002, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell, 
pastor, the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr. and the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Burial was 
in the adjoining cemetery.
   Ms. Cameron died Monday, Dec. 23, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Ms. Cameron was born Sept. 7, 1925 in Roanoke to the late Frank and Ionie Strickland 
Goss.  She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in the Broughton community, 
where she was an active member until recent years.  Ms. Cameron was preceded in death 
on March 20, 1999 by her husband of 53 years, Scott Cameron; a son, Joseph Scott 
Cameron; a daughter, Mary Sue Cameron; and a sister, Minnie Lou Goss.  Ms. Cameron 
succumbed after a lengthy struggle with declining health.
   Survivors include four sons, Gordon David Cameron of Dothan and Frankie Lee 
Cameron, Charles Cameron and Mose Oliver Cameron of Roanoke; five daughters, 
Ms. Annie Mae Bradshaw of Newnan, Ga., Mrs. Ida Bell and Mrs. Patricia Brown of 
Roanoke, Mrs. Sandra Jean Williams of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Lennie Faye Heard of 
Wadley; 28 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Services, Roanoke.

[Correction (in Leader, January 15, 2003):  In the obituary of Hattie Cameron, a daughter, 
Rose Cameron of Roanoke was accidentally omitted.  Annie Bradshaw of Newnan, Ga., 
should have been listed as a step-daughter.  Mrs. Cameron died on Dec. 23.]

Arthur David Bassett

   (ROANOKE) Services for Arthur David Bassett, 60, of Roanoke, were Thursday, 
Dec. 26, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, with the Rev. Don Quick 
officiating.  Burial followed in Rock Springs Cemetery.
   Mr. Bassett died Saturday, Dec. 21, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Bassett was born April 18, 1942, son of Durward David 
and Carrie Dell Waldrop Bassett.  He was a radio dispatcher with the Randolph County 
Sheriff's Department, a retired Army veteran and a member of Rock Springs Christian 
Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Keiko Bassett of Roanoke; two sons, Johnny Bassett of 
Roanoke and Erwin Bassett of Iceland; one sister Rebecca Walls of Franklin, Ga.; and 
three nieces.
   Pallbearers were Gene Hawes, Billy Herren, Jeff Fuller, Larry Clark Jr., John Mote 
and Whit Bonner.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Sheri Ward Chamblee

   (BEULAH) Services for Sheri Ward Chamblee, 40, of Beulah, formerly of Roanoke, 
were Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at 2 p.m. at White's Chapel Methodist Church with the 
Rev. Don Quick officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Chamblee died Friday, Dec. 20, at Bethany House in Opelika.
   A Randolph County natice [sic - native], Mrs. Chamlee [sic] was born Jan. 20, 1962, 
daughter of Waayne [sic] and Eulette Ward.  She was a dedicated wife and mother and 
worked as an administrative secretary at East Alabama Medical Center for 18 years and 
was a member of White's Chapel Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her 
grandparents, W. T. and Lois Ward, and H. Waites and Mattie Lou Kirby.
   Survivors include her parents; her husband, Douglas M. Chamblee of Beulah; a son Milt 
Chamblee; a sister, Donna Ward Hodges of Roanoke; a brother, Bill Ward of Valley; three 
nieces and two nephews.
   Donations in her memory may be made can be made to Hospice of East Alabama 
Medical Center or Cornerstone Foundation at EAMC.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Darrell Reaves

   (LANETT) Darrell Reaves, 69, of Lanett died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at George H. 
Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. EST at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Brian Wyatt and the Rev. Donnie Erwin Brown officiating.  
Burial followed in Resthaven Cemetery.
   Mr. Reaves is survived by his wife, Mary P. Reaves; his son, William Darrell Reaves Jr. 
of Troy; and his brother, Hoyt Reaves of Valley.
   Born Jan. 3, 1933, in Randolph County, Mr. Reaves was retired as the transportation 
manager at Vanity Fair in Monroeville.  He had served in the U.S. Air Force.  Mr. Reaves 
was a member of Lanett United Methodist Church.  He was the son of the late Hoyt 
Reaves and Ann Yates Reaves.
   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Lanett United Methodist 
Church in his memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Charles Andrews

   (ANNISTON) Services for Charles Andrews, 59, of Anniston were Friday, Dec. 27, 
2002, at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church with the Rev. L. L. Williams officiating. 
Burial followed at Eden Hills cemetery with Anniston Funeral Service in charge.
   Mr. Andrews died Friday, Dec. 20, at Regional Medical Center.
   Survivors include two sisters, Betty Shears of Roanoke and Mary Jack Bethune of 
Anniston; and three brothers, William Andrews of Roanoke and Joe Gooden and Faith 
Gooden of Maryland.
   Friends served as pallbearers.
   A native of Anniston, Mr. Andrews was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church.  He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Mrs. Willie Mae Andrews and Mr. Ernest Gooden; a 
sister, Rena Bell Martin; and two brothers, Walter Frank Andrews and J. W. Bradford.

Isiah Wright

   (FIVE POINTS) Isiah Wright, 82, of Five Points died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Five Points, on Thursday, 
Dec. 26, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Robertson officiating.  Interment was in the 
church cemetery.
   Mr. Wright was a native of Chambers County and a member of Mt. Pleasant United 
Methodist Church, Five Points.
   Surviving are his wife, Mae Doris Wright of Five Points; four sons, Lorenzia Wright 
of Fayetteville, N.C., Lenwood Wright of LaFayette, Morrell Wright of Five Points and 
Charles Wright of Lanett; three daughters, Thelma Deans of Austell, Ga., Linda Johnson 
of Moody and Uneeda Trammell of Five Points; two brothers, Willie Rufus Wright of 
Montgomery and John Walter Wright of Five Points; 18 grandchildren; 15 great- 
grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Billy F. Young

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Billy F. Young, 50, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Dec. 24, 2002, at his residence.
   Mr. Young, born Sept. 20, 1952, in Troup County, Ga., was the son of the late 
Melvin Young and Agnes L. Greathouse.  He had lived in LaGrange all of his life and 
was employed as a millwright by the Southeastern Carpenters Union in Atlanta and the 
King Company.
   Survivors in addition to his mother of Opelika, include a sister, Patricia Smith of 
Opelika; four aunts, Winnie Spears, Demae Brown, Flossie Wood and Willie Maude 
Brown, and an uncle, Larry Young, all of Wedowee; two nieces and a nephew; and 
several great nieces and nephews.  He preceded in death by his son, Billy Frank "Bimbo" 
Young.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel 
with Pastor Charles Greathouse officiating.  Burial was in High Pine Baptist Church 
Cemetery in Roanoke.

OBITUARIES:

Susan Lewis

   (ROANOKE) Services for Susan Lewis, 54, of Roanoke will be Saturday, Jan. 11, 
2003, at 10 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Elder Daniel Lewis officiating.  
Burial will follow at Zion's Rest Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke.
   A memorial service will be held at Sharon Church, Lake, Miss., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 
Jan. 18.
   Mrs. Lewis died Monday, Jan. 6, at her home following an extended illness.
   A Roanoke resident since November 1990, Mrs. Lewis was a native of Newton, Miss., 
born Oct. 19, 1948, daughter of Curtis Eugene and Maudie Mildred Shoemaker Ward.  
She was a homemaker and a member of Zion's Rest Primitive Baptist Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her parents; two infant daughters, Rhonda Kim and Karen Leah; and 
two sisters, Mildred Carol Ward and May Joan Felton.
   Survivors include her husband, Daniel E. Lewis of Roanoke; one son, Kevin S. Lewis of 
Roanoke; and a sister, Rachel Miller of Collinsville, Miss.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, from 
5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Martha Lee Messer

   (WOODLAND) Services for Martha Lee Messer, 77, of Woodland will be Wednesday, 
Jan. 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bobby Kirby and David 
Daniel officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Messer died Monday, Jan. 6, at her home.
   A native of Cullman County, Mrs. Messer was born Aug. 17, 1925, daughter of Mitchell 
and Bessie Brown Gay.  She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and the Woodland 
Senior Citizens Group and had been employed at LaMar Manufacturing Company.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Milton "Hop" Messer; one daughter, 
Judy Perry; and a grandson, Thomas Snyder.
   Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Jean Traylor of LaGrange and Pat Laney of 
Ranburne; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers will be Steve Sears, Brad Laney, Jamie Taylor, Chris Perry, Bradley Dale, 
Kenneth Messer and Terry Messer.

   (ROANOKE) James Elijah "Big Ben" Foster, 45, of Roanoke died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2003, 
at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Delores Foster of Roanoke; one daughter, Ms. Shunta 
Foster of Roanoke; one son, Benjamin Henry Foster of Roanoke; one grandson; his 
mother, Ms. Lorene Foster of Roanoke; nine sisters, Vickie Brown, Chris Foster, Bridgett 
Foster, Liz Jones, Allison Sims and Deborah Houston of Roanoke, Gwen Roberson of 
Wedowee and Janice Walker and Betty Walker of Riverdale, Ga.; seven brothers, Timothy 
Foster, Robert Staples, Larry Rachel and Hilton Rachel of Roanoke, Paul Rachel of 
Marietta, Ga., Donald Pearson of Denver, Colo., and James Edward Clark of Connecticut; 
and other loving relatives and friends.
   Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his father, James Rachel; a son Jermicah Foster; 
and four brothers, Reginald, Tyrone and Freddie Foster and Everett Rachel.
   Services for Mr. Foster will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. William Phillips officiating.  Interment will be in Sky View 
Memorial Gardens, Welch.

Wilmer Lee Hollaway

   (GRAHAM) Services for Mrs. Wilmer Lee Holloway, 68, of Graham were Monday, 
Jan. 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, Wedowee with the Rev. Bobby 
Garner officiating.  Burial was at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery, Bowdon, Ga.
   Mrs. Hollaway died Saturday, Jan. 4, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong Graham resident, Mrs. Hollaway was born July 30, 1934, in Carroll County, 
Ga., daughter of Joe Leonard and Emma Crews Benefield.  She was a member of Sardis 
Baptist Church and had been employed with LaMar Manufacturing Company.  She was 
preceded in death by a son, Kevin Eugene Hollaway.
   Survivors include her husband, Bobby T. Hollaway of Graham; one daughter, Rilla Joy 
Crews of Graham; a son, Bobby Joe Hollaway of Ranburne; two sisters, Myrl Sanders of

Carol Elizabeth Swann Hammett

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Carol Elizabeth Swann Hammett, 48, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at her home.
   Ms. Hammett, born Aug. 8, 1954, in Troup County, Ga., was the daughter of the late 
Emmett G. and Mary Elizabeth Denney Swann.  She lived in LaGrange all her life, was 
employed at Pizza Villa on Lafayette Parkway and was a member of Smyrna Holiness 
Church.
   Survivors include two daughters, Brittany Nichole Gumm and Crystal Leigh Williams of 
LaGrange; two sons, Darren Donald Hammett and Timothy Smith of LaGrange; two 
sisters, Linda Attaway of Hogansville, Ga., and Helen Rich of Lancing, Tenn.; five 
brothers, Gale Swann, Bill Swann and Danny Daniel all of LaGrange, Gene Swann of 
Chattsworth, Ga., and Harold Swann of Roanoke, Ala.; a special cousin; four 
grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with 
the Revs. Wallace Pittman and Mike Powell officiating.  Burial was in Hillview East 
Cemetery.

Sara Faye Yates Crawford

   (DOUGLASVILLE, Ga.) Sara Faye Yates Crawford, 56, of Douglasville, Ga., died 
Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.
   She was born July 8, 1946, in Woodland, daughter of John and Gleamer Yates.  Mrs. 
Crawford was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband Larry Joe Crawford.
   Besides her parents, survivors include a son, Larry Todd Crawford of Douglasville; 
two daughters, Leigh Michele Crawford Beauchamp of Douglasville and Amy Lynn Crawford 
of Marietta, Ga.; her fiance, Steve Gusmus of Douglasville; a sister, Sylvia Grant of 
Wedowee; and one grandchild.
   Services were Monday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. in Hightower's Chapel, Douglasville.  The 
body lay in state Monday afternoon at Providence Baptist Church, Woodland, from 
1:30 until 2:30 p.m., with interment in the church cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
   Arrangements were by Hightower's Memorial Chapel, Douglasville.

   (ANNISTON) Services for Edna P. Bowman, 87, of Anniston were Friday, Jan. 3, 
2003, at 2 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daniel Harper officiating.  
Burial was in Pattons Chapel Cemetery in Lincoln.
   Mrs. Bowman died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at National Health Care, Anniston.
   Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Bowman Griffith of DeArmanville and Kay 
Bowman Jones of Roanoke; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 
a great-great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were members of Saks Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Bowman was preceded in death by her husband, L. T. Bowman; a son, Wayne T. 
Bowman; two brothers, Harvel Pettus and Howard Pettus; and two grandchildren, Charles 
A. Bowman and Kassandra Griffith Talbott.

   (ASHLAND) Services for Ethel Marie Harkins Denney, 63, of Ashland were at 2 p.m.

Richard East officiating.  Burial followed in Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with 
the funeral home in charge.
   Mrs. Denney died Friday, Jan. 3, at Clay County Hospital.
   Survivors include three sons, Johnny Denney of Anniston, Tony Denney of Delta and 
Terry Denney of Ashland; two sisters, Odell Johns of Goodwater and Reather Morton of 
Ashland; three brothers, Andrew Harkins of Alexander City, Joe Harkins and Mitchell 
Harkins, both of Ashland; a companion, Red Welch of Ashland; and nine grandchildren.
   Mrs. Denney was a native of Randolph County but had lived most of her life in Clay 
County.  She had been employed at Clay County Home Health as a homemaker, 
Southland Manufacturing Co. for several years, Russell Manufacturing Co., Maddix and 
Red's Catfish and was a Baptist.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Heflin Denney; a sister; and a brother.

   (DADEVILLE) Services for Margaret W. Dollar, 80, of Dadeville, formerly of 
Roanoke, were at First United Methodist Church of Dadeville on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, 
at 1:30 p.m.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.  The Revs. Robert Leverett and 
Jimmy Bashem officiated.
   Mrs. Dollar died Friday, Jan. 3.
   Born May 16, 1922, Mrs. Dollar was a member of First United Methodist Church of 
Dadeville.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Civin Dollar.
   Survivors include a son, Larry Dollar of Dadeville; two sisters, Mohee Bozeman of 
Roanoke and Ann Lipham of Newell; two brothers, Bill White and Jack E. White of 
Opelika; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Benny Jackson McCard

   (ROANOKE) Services for Benny Jackson "Jacky" McCard, 52, of Roanoke were

Cemetery.
   Mr. McCard died suddenly on Friday, Jan. 3, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A native of West Point, Ga., Mr. McCard was born Sept. 19, 1950, son of Alvin J. and 
Winifred Farr McCard.  He was a member of Paran Missionary Baptist Church and had 
been employed by Daniel Construction.  Mr. McCard was preceded in death by his father, 
Alvin J. "Junior" McCard, and one sister, Sharon McCard.
   Survivors include his wife, Sherri Forman Moore of Roanoke; his mother, Freddie 
McCard of Roanoke; two daughters, Sharon McCard of Woodland and Dakota McCard 
of Roanoke; two sons, Alan McCard and James Richard McCard of Roanoke; two 
stepsons, Zack Moore and Doug Moore of Roanoke; three sisters, Pat Williams of 
Roopville, Ga., Linda Smith of Roanoke and Pam Sprouse of Dunn, N.C.; one brother, 
Gregory McCard of Blountville, Tenn.; and 12 grandchildren.

   Mrs. Moore died Thursday, Jan. 2, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   A Montgomery resident for 26 years, Mrs. Moore was a Tallapoosa County native, born 
March 22, 1934, daughter of Herbert Lee and Matte Lee Moon Fuller.  She was a member 
of High Pine Baptist Church and had been an LPN at the Professional Center Hospital of 
Montgomery.
   Survivors include her husband, I. B. Moore of Roanoke; one daughter, Angela Moore of 
Montgomery; two sons, Ricky Moore of Millbrook and Henry Lee Moore Sr. of Roanoke; 
five grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Ellen Bryant and Dorothy Ann Cook of Columbus, 
Ga., and Carolyn Fuller of Dadeville; and two brothers, Herbert L. Fuller of Dadeville and 
Glenn Fuller of New Site.

Britt Blakes

   (ROANOKE) Services for Britt Blakes, 57, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, 
at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome Fannin, pastor, officiating 
and the Rev. Lathonia Wright giving the eulogy.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Blakes died Wednesday, Jan. 1, at his residence.
   Mr. Blakes was born in Opelika Oct. 28, 1944, to the late Britt and Emma Lera Brown 
Blakes.  He grew up in LaFayette, where at an early age he joined Poplar Springs Baptist 
Church and was a graduate of Chambers County Training School.  Mr. Blakes was 
preceded in death by his sister, Patricia, and a brother, Major.  On Aug. 7, 1967, he 
married the former Edna Holliday of Roanoke.  While they had no children of their own, 
their mutual love for children drove them to open up their home to 13 children whom they 
raised and nurtured as their own.  Mr. Blakes was a retired employee of the Roanoke 
Utilities Board, where he worked for 25 years.  He was an honorably discharged veteran 
of the U.S. Armed Forces.  Mr. Blakes died after a year-long battle with cancer.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edna Blakes of Roanoke; 13 children, Ms. Michelle 
Mack of Bronx, N.Y., Ms. Jacqueline Johnson, Frankie Collins and Carey Collins of 
Chattanooga, Tenn., Ms. Deborah Watson of Jonesboro, Ga., Walter Collins Jr. of 
Atlanta, Tracey Smith of Chicago, and Ms. Ella Ware, James Holliday Jr., Rodney 
Holliday, Ms. Tamika Holliday and Tyrese Heard, all of Roanoke; three brothers, John 
Lee Kendricks of Marvin and Ricky Blakes and Jimmy Blakes of LaFayette; six sisters, 
Mrs. Helen Parker of Benton Harbor, Mich., Mrs. Myrtis Anderson of Marvin, Ms., Betty 
Jean Carr of New York, Mrs. Carolyn Howell and Ms. Barbara Blakes of LaFayette and 
Jane Hutchins of Atlanta; 26 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers-in- 
law; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and special friends who helped the family 
during Mr. Blakes' illness.

was a homemaker and a member of Jordan's Chapel Congregational Methodist Church.  
She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Cosper.
   Mrs. Cosper is survived by her husband, Davis H. Cosper of Lineville; three stepsons, 
Ray Cosper of Heflin, Jerry Cosper of Anniston and Gary Cosper of Lawrenc[e]ville, Ga.; 
a sister, Onzel Thompson of Douglasville, Ga.; eight step-grandchildren and several 
great-grandchildren.

Shirley Youngblood Lovvorn

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Services for Shirley Youngblood Lovvorn, 76, of Bowdon, Ga., were

   Mrs. Lovvorn died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at West Georgia Hospice.
   Born in Alabama on March 26, 1926, to the late Farrell and Janie O'Doud Youngblood, 
Mrs. Lovvorn was a retired press operator for Douglas and Lomason Co. and a member 
of Corinth Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death on March 31, 1976, by her 
husband, Horace N. Lovvorn.
   Survivors include four sons, Dale Lovvorn and Danny Lovvorn of Woodland, Gary 
Lovvorn of LaGrange, Ga., and Mark Lovvorn of Wedowee; a daughter, Betty Janney of 
Bowdon; a stepson, Kenneth Lovvorn of Carrollton, Ga.; a sister, Olivia Meeks of Frost 
Proff [Frostproof], Fla.; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
   Music for the ceremony was by Samuel Meadows and Ray Hamm.  Pallbearers were

William Calvin Shipp

   (WADLEY) Services for William Calvin Shipp, 75, of Wadley were Thursday, Jan. 2,

was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Shipp died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Shipp was born July 17, 1927, son of William 
Thomas and Jessie Cleo Horton Shipp.  He was a Navy veteran and a member of Roanoke 
Church of Christ.  He had been employed with Randolph County for 32-1/2 years and had 
served as county commissioner for eight years.
   Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Pike Shipp of Wadley; a son, Bill Shipp of Wadley; 
two grandsons; a brother, Charles E. Shipp of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were Roger Bennett, Greg Williams, Bruce Williams, Mike Pike, Glenn 
Moore, Marion Staples, Steve Shipp and Matt Shipp.  Honorary pallbearers were George

   Mrs. Smith died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 24, 1922, daughter of Luther and 
Elizabeth Thompson Glass.  She was a member of Rock Mills Methodist Church.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Kline Smith.
   Survivors include two sons, Phillip Smith and Mike Webb of Rock Mills; one brother, 
Bill Glass of Roanoke; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Opal Eugenia Rice

   A former resident of LaGrange, Ga., Mrs. Rice was a Chambers County native, born 
June 2, 1913, daughter of Curtis and Era Slay Turnham.  She was a member of the Second 
Baptist Church of LaGrange and had owned and operated a flower shop.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Hayden Rice.
   Survivors include one sister, Elaine McCollough of Roanoke, and one brother, 
Newell Turnham of Miami, Fla.

   Mrs. Turner died Sunday, Dec. 29, at University of Alabama Medical Center, 
Birmingham.
   Mrs. Turner was born in Randolph County on Jan. 20, 1970, to Roger and Patricia 
Cooley Ackles of Micaville.  She attended Randolph County High School and was a 
lifelong member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.  Mrs. Turner had a great interest in and love 
for sports, particularly softball and volleyball that carried over from her high school days 
at RCHS.  In later years, she enjoyed refereeing various games for neighborhood, high 
school and junior college teams.  Mrs. Turner was a former employee of five years at 
Wellborn Cabinet Company, where she worked until overtaken by illness.
   Survivors include her parents; her husband, David Wayne Turner of Micaville; a son, 
David Wayne Turner; a daughter, Demikia Nicole Turner; two brothers, William David 
Ackles of Kansas City, Mo., and Don Ackles of Newnan, Ga.; a sister, Ms. Demetrice 
Ackles of Roanoke; her maternal grandparents, Office and Evon Cooley of Clinton, Md.; 
her paternal grandfather, John K. Ackles of Lineville; her mother-and father-in-law; 
and five sisters-in-law.

and Lera Pinkard Baldwin.  She was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church and had 
been employed with Handley Mills.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, 
Y. B. Owens; a daughter, Rudine Manley; and a son, V. L. Owens.
   Survivors include her husband, Lonnie B. Norred of Roanoke; two daughters, Kate 
Janney of LaGrange and Nell Alsabrook of Roanoke; one son, Phillip Norred of Roanoke; 
a half-sister, Maebell Barrett of Valley; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren 
and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Jeremy Cummings and Chris Mobley.  Honorary pallbearers were Ryan Hart and

Mary E. Woody

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary E. Woody, 85, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday Jan. 6, 2003, 
at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mrs. Woody, born Jan. 29, 1917, in LaGrange, was the daughter of the late Lovic and 
Minnie Johns Davis.  She was a homemaker and a member of Franklin Road Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include a son, Bob Woody of LaGrange; a daughter, Patricia Veal of 
Roanoke, Ala.; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Sara Davis 
and Wynell Slaughter of LaGrange, Hazel Neely of Jonesboro, Ga., and Betty Hearn of 
Brooks, Ga.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Augustus Woody.
   Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in the chapel of 
Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Frank Sledge officiating.  Burial will be in 
Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Gilmer Doggett

   (GILBERTOWN) Services for Gilmer Doggett, 94, of Gilbertown, Ala., will be at 
11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Gilbertown United Methodist Church, with Dr. Ervin 
Dailey and the Rev. Ed Rose officiating.  Interment will be in Gilbertown Cemetery.
   Mr. Doggett, son of the late John Thomas and Mallie Mosley Doggett, died Sunday, 
Jan. 5, at Columbus Medical Center in Columbus, Ga.
   Mr. Doggett lived almost all his life in Gilbertown and was self-employed for most of 
his working life.  Around the beginning of World War II, he drove a rolling store, and he 
worked in the Mobile Shipyard during the war.  After the war, he ran a service station 
until he retired and managed the Gilbertown Senior Citizens' Nutrition Center.  Just before 
the death of his wife Sarah, he came to live with his daughter, Lauren May, in Roanoke.  
The last few years of his life, he lived in Williamsburg Manor in Roanoke.
   Mr. Gilbert, as he was called by most around Gilbertown, was a member of Gilbertown 
United Methodist Church, former mayor of Gilbertown, a Mason, and a member of the 
Gilbertown Lions Club during its existence.  He graduated from high school in Butler.
   He is survived by his daughter, Lauren D. May of Roanoke; three grandchildren and 
two great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah G. Doggett, 
four brothers and five sisters.
   Pallbearers are Gil May, Tom Usry, Dob Gibson, Rankin Doggett and John Louis 
Jackson.

Oxford; two sons, Joseph Surrency of Heflin and Ben Surrency of Anniston; a brother, 
Rayford Nelson of Oxford; four sisters, May-Rene Turner of Anniston, Delores Pyle of 
Stilicam, Wash., Emmie Jenkins of Wedowee and Stella Sue Reaves of Hartselle; 
six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

   Mrs. Surrency was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Tom Nelson; her 
husband, Allen Surrency; and four brothers and a sister.  She was a native of Calhoun 
County and was a member of Bethel West Baptist Church in Randolph County.  She was 
the former owner of B&J Grocery on U.S. Highway 78 East.

Alma Thomas

   (LANETT) Alma Thomas, 91, of Lanett died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Lanier 
Nursing Home in Valley.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Robert Huff officiating.  Burial followed in 
Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.
   Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Shirley Whitlen of California; three sons, 
Harold Lee Jordan of Dunwoody, Ga., Marshall Thomas of Ellijay, Ga., and Richard Allen 
Jordan of Warner Robins, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Born Sept. 27, 1911, in Roanoke, Mrs. Thomas was an excellent seamstress and loved 
to sew.  She had made uniforms for the high schools.  She was a member of Lanett First 
Church of the Nazarene.

Charles Ragsdale

   (ROANOKE) Services for Charles Ragsdale, 54, of Roanoke, will be Thursday, Jan. 16, 
2003, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating.  
Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mr. Ragsdale died Sunday, Jan. 12, in Roanoke.
   A Chambers County native, Mr. Ragsdale was born Dec. 23, 1948, son of Jasper and 
Kate Harmon Ragsdale.
   Survivors include one daughter, Paula Smith of San Diego, Calif., one son, Charles 
Ryan Ragsdale Jr. of Mulberry, Fla.; two sisters, Carolyn Vickers of Jackson Gap and 
Eulala Sellers of Tallas[s]ee; and two brothers, Billy Ragsdale and Steve Ragsdale of 
Winder, Ga.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, on Thursday, 
from 10 a.m. until noon.

Homer Jr. Hallmark

   (DELTA) Services for Homer Jr. Hallmark, 74, of Delta were Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, 
at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Mark Williams officiating.  Burial 
was in Center West Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Hallmark died Sunday, Jan. 12, at Clay County Hospital.
   Survivors include his wife, Martha Hallmark of Delta; two sons, David Hallmark of 
Heflin and Gaither Hallmark of Delta; a step-daughter, Robin Whaley of Decatur; four 
stepsons, Terry Blakenship and Randy Blakenship, both of Chicago, Wayne Blakenship 
of Troy, N.C., and Jim Brooks of Griffin, Ga.; 24 grandchildren and four great- 
grandchildren.
   Mr. Hallmark was a native of Calhoun County and had lived in Clay and Randolph 
counties most of his life.  He retired from Madix as a press operator after more than 
13 years of service.  He was a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church.

Clema Phillips

   (LANETT) Clema Phillips, 92, of Lanett died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2003, at George H. 
Lanier Nursing Home.
   Services will be at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, 
Jan. 15, with interment in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Lanett.  The Rev. Floyd Aikens 
will officiate.
   Mrs. Phillips was born in Chambers County on Oct. 17, 1910.  She was a homemaker 
and a member of Sunset Heights Baptist Church of Lanett.
   Surviving are a daughter, Betty Newman of LaFayette; four grandchildren, including 
James Newman and Sarah Cox of Wadley; seven great-grandchildren; and two great- 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be James Newman, John Newman, Brian Sweatt, David Sweatt, 
Randy Newman and Brandon Ison.

   (ANNISTON) William "Wild Willie" Bonner, 52, of Anniston, formerly of Roanoke, 
died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann Phillips of Wadley; four sisters, Rosa 
Rowland of Roanoke and Dorothy Mays, Delois Brewster and Shirley Ann Bonner of 
Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, John Bonner of Roanoke and Jimmy Bonner of 
Decatur, Ga.; three grandchildren; and other loving relatives and friends.
   Services for Mr. Bonner were Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at East Roanoke Church of 
God, Roanoke, with Minister Tom Staples Jr. officiating.  Interment was in Sky View 
Memorial Gardens, Welch.

   (DOUGLASVILLE, Ga.) Dorothy Ward Dyar, 63, of Douglasville, Ga., died Monday, 
Jan. 13, 2003.
   Mrs. Dyar was born Dec. 12, 1939, in Roanoke, daughter of the late Emory and Orrie 
Ward.  She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith.
   Survivors include her husband, John Dyar of Douglasville; three sons, William (Bill) 
Roger Dyar, Robert (Bob) Dyar, Kenneth Dyar and Rod Sisson of Douglasville; a 
daughter, Susan Elizabeth Tucker of Douglasville; a foster daughter, Linda Ross of 
Bowdon, Ga.; two brothers, Darnell Ward and Wayne Ward of Roanoke; 
six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Services will be Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Rosehaven Chapel, with the 
Rev. Mack Lively officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Harmony Memorial Gardens.

Nellie Rue Sheppard

   (ROANOKE) Services for Nellie Rue Sheppard, 74, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
Jan. 14, 2003, at 3:30 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Bro. W. C. Cofield 
and Bro. Gerald Romine officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Sheppard died Monday, Jan. 13, at her residence.
   A Roanoke native Mrs. Sheppard was born Feb. 28, 1928, daughter of Hoyt and 
Velma Nolen Robinson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ellis 
Sheppard.
   Survivors include two sons, Michael E. Sheppard and Thomas Phillip Sheppard of 
Roanoke; one sister, Virginia Adamson of Roanoke; three grandchildren; four great- 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Jamie Heard, Chris Walker, Scott Sheppard, Mark Johnson, 
Richard Shelnutt and Brad Davis.

Frances Holliday Jones

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Frances Holliday Jones, 85, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, 
Jan. 11, 2002 [sic - 2003], at her home.
   Mrs. Jones, born Sept. 23, 1917, in Roanoke, was the daughter of the late Edgar and 
Mary Etta Tomlin Holliday.  She had lived in LaGrange since 1978, retired from West 
Point Pepperell and was a homemaker.  She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two daughters, Cecile Keeble of LaGrange and Sue Rosso of Cusseta; 
eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Faye Buttrum; and 
several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman T. Jones, 
a grandson, Kendall Harralson and a son-in-law.
   Funeral services were at 11 Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand 
chapel with the Revs. Jimmie L. Willis and Michael Hornsby officiating.  Burial was in 
Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Rufus Henry 'Buck' Kerr

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Rufus Henry "Buck" Kerr, 92, of Wedowee, were Friday, 
Jan. 10, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Henderson 
officiating.  Burial followed at Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mr. Kerr died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, the oldest of seven children, Mr. Kerr was born 
July 19, 1910, son of Joseph Higgins and Levis Matthews Kerr.  He was a retired rural 
letter carrier for the United States Postal Service where he worked for 25 years.  He 
also had worked at The Randolph Press and the State of Alabama ABC Board and was a 
member of The Kiwanis Club and Wedowee Senior Citizens, as well as being a member of 
First United Methodist Church and a veteran of the Army during World War II.  He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Exa Hunter Kerr; a daughter, Melinda Wilson; and a son 
R. H. Kerr Jr.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances Hanson of Troy and Mrs. Jane K. 
Williamson of Rome, Ga.; two sisters, Edith Head of Rock Mills and Mildred Snow of 
Birmingham; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were Hunter Hanson, Emory Hanson, Michael Williamson, Gregory Childs, 
Barry Wilson Jr., Patrick Wilson, Clint Wilson, James Kendrick and Logan Ide.  Honorary 
pallbearers were Wedowee Kiwanis Club.
   The family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church building 
fund.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Violet Agnes Sheppard, 78, of Roanoke were Tuesday,

   Mrs. Sheppard died Sunday, Jan. 12, at Brian Center Nursing Care in LaGrange, Ga.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Sheppard was born June 16, 1924, daughter of Gene 
and Jewel Barton Clark.  She was a member of Bethany Lime Congregational Christian 
Church and had worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Gene Sheppard.
   Survivors include two daughters, Pam D. Ford of Roanoke and LaDonna Gail Wortham 
of Wedowee; one son, Clark David Sheppard of Roanoke; three grandchildren, two great- 
grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Wortham, Jacky Wortham, Timmy Taylor, Ricky Willingham, 
Gene Grant and Nathan Wortham.

   (WEDOWEE) Memorial services for Cheryl Lynn McGouirk, 56, of Wedowee were

   Mrs. McGouirk died Sunday, Jan. 12, at her residence following an extended illness.
   Mrs. McGouirk was a native of Florida, born Dec. 8, 1946, daughter of Randall David 
and Elinor J. Ward Johnson.  She had been employed with Country Expressions in 
Wedowee and was a member of Rock Springs Christian Church and the Randolph County 
Christian Women's Club.
   Mrs. McGouirk is survived by her husband, Samuel David McGouirk of Wedowee; two 
daughters, Sherry Sears of Douglasville, Ga., and Shelly McDaniel Carter of Wedowee; 
four sisters, Donna Giddens, Sandra Newborn, Carol Bomar and Janis Austin, all of 
Douglasville, Ga.; one brother, Ronald Johnson of Douglasville; and six grandchildren.

Margaret Boggs Whitten

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Margaret Boggs Whitten, 71, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, 
Jan. 9, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Whitten, born Sept. 8, 1931, in Randolph County, was the daughter of the late 
James and Annie Lou Burdette Boggs.  She worked in textiles and was a waitress.  She 
was a member of East LaGrange Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Joel Whitten of LaGrange; a son, Fred Boggs of 
Dahlonega, Ga.; two sisters, Mary Swanson of LaGrange and Diana Hackett of 
Fayetteville, Ga.; two brothers, Jerry Boggs of LaGrange and Larry Boggs of Douglas, 
Ga.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, 
Bobby Whitten, and a granddaughter, Michelle Davis.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral 
Home chapel with the Rev. Kevin Buttrum officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn 
Cemetery.

Mae Willie Smith

   (ROANOKE) Mae Willie Smith, 98, of Roanoke died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, 
at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services were Monday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church #2, County 
Road 114, LaFayette, with the Rev. Curtis Spidell and the Rev. W. A. Dean officiating.  
Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Smith is survived by three special cousins, Ms. Mattie Slaughter of LaFayette, 
Ms. Doris McCoy of Five Points and Ms. Mozelle Ware of Roanoke; and a large number of 
nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Smith was born in Chambers County on Oct. 13, 1904, daughter of the late Henry 
Brown Sr. and Elizabeth Slaughter Brown of LaFayette.  Ms. Smith was the last surviving 
sister of a family of six siblings, including John W. Slaughter, Howard Slaughter, Henry 
Brown Jr., Richard Brown and Ruby Rachel.  The family attended Friendship Baptist 
Church #2 in LaFayette.  She was the widow of the late James P. Smith who died in 1956.  
She devoted most of her life to farming.  Within the last several months, Ms. Smith 
resided at Traylor Nursing Home after advancing age and declining health began to take 
their toll.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Betty Jo Mickle

   (LAFAYETTE) Betty Jo Mickle, 82, of LaFayette died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at her 
residence.
   Services were at LaFayette First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 
14, with interment in Chapel Hill Methodist Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Joyce Woodstuff 
and the Rev. Paul Howard officiated.
   Mrs. Mickle was born at White Plains on June 1, 1920.  She was a member of LaFayette 
First United Methodist Church and had helped her husband in the operation of Mickle & 
Jacobs Appliance Store in LaFayette.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn 
Mickle.
   Surviving are two sons, Charles Mickle of Opelika and David Mickle of Kennesaw, Ga.; 
two sisters, Mae McKinney and Sara Myrt Burton of LaFayette; and three grandchildren.

13 great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Spears was a native of Clay County and a former resident of Wedowee and 
Lineville.  He had lived in the Jacksonville and Anniston area since 1989.  He had worked 
as a carpenter and was a member of Iduma Congregational Methodist Church.

Louise Haynes Terrell

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Louise Haynes Terrell, 78, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, 
Jan. 8, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Terrell, born July 16, 1924, in Standing Rock, was the daughter of the late Jesse 
and Myrtle Lanier Haynes.  She lived in LaGrange most of her life, was a member of the 
Baptist church and was the wife of the late William C. Terrell.
   Survivors include five daughters, Betty Sue Patterson of Woodland, Sandra Lynn Sutton 
of Whitesburg, Ga., Toni Brown of Hogansville, Ga., Pam Coe of LaGrange and Patricia 
Jo Prestridge of Newell; three sons, Randall Terrell of Franklin, Ga., David Terrell of 
West Point, Ga., and Samuel Terrell of LaGrange; two sisters, Doris Sellers and Patricia 
Carlisle of LaGrange; a brother, Jesse Lee Haynes Jr. of Birmingham; 22 grandchildren 
and 15 great-grandchildren.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in 
death by a son, William C. Terrell Jr.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, in the chapel of Claude A. McKibben 
and Sons Funeral Home with the Revs. Billy McCullough and Jimmy McMillian 
officiating.  Burial was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

   Mr. Wilkerson died Monday, Jan. 6, at Ridgewood Valley Hospital in New Jersey.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mary Wilkerson of Fort Worth, Texas, and Susan 
Wilkerson of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a son, James Wilkerson of Wadley; two brothers, 
Joe Wilkerson of Wedowee and Philip Wilkerson of Lineville; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Gill Young, Gene Ventimeglia, Jimmy Moncus, Bobby Ray Fables, 
Randy Hanners, Billy Fred McCullers, Al Gianella and Glenn Kennedy.
   Mr. Wilkerson was a native of Clay County and lived in Haledon, N.J. from 1970-1996.  
He had returned to Clay County in 1996.  He was a retired instructor in the New Jersey 
school system.  He received his master's degree in vocational agriculture from Auburn 
University and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church South.

Virginia Lou Walker

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Services for Virginia Lou Walker, 64, of Bowdon, Ga., were at 
11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Almon Funeral Home Chapel in Carrollton, Ga.  
The Rev. Carlton Rivers officiated.  Graveside services were at 2 p.m. at Old Concord 
Memorial Gardens in Dadeville.  The Rev. Keith Hancock officiated.
   Mrs. Walker died Monday, Jan. 6.  She was born April 13, 1938, in Tallapoosa County 
to Charlie Walker and Nancy Elizabeth Sharp Walker.  She was a supervisor at Marion 
Mills and a member of Bethesda Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her husband, Charles L. Pitts of Bowdon; two brothers, Neil Walker 
of Carrollton and Wayne Barber of Jackson's Gap; and two sisters, Carol Jones of 
Montgomery and Sue Brown of Graham.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Barry Pitts and Jimmy Lynn and 
one daughter, Martha Sue.

   (ROANOKE) Hattie Susie Fuller, 60, of Roanoke died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, 
at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include her husband, William E. Fuller of Roanoke; three daughters, Mrs. 
Melvin Ann Cameron and Mrs. Sara A. Hand of Roanoke and Mrs. Mae Joyce Baker 
of LaGrange, Ga.; three sons, Sammy Calloway of Birmingham and Otis J. Fuller and 
Adam L. Fuller of Roanoke; her father, Willie H. Calloway of Roanoke; two sisters, Ms. 
Dorothy Trammell and Mrs. Maggie Hill of Roanoke; two brothers, Curtis Jean Calloway 
and David James of Roanoke; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other loving 
relatives and friends.
   She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Mattie Susie Calloway; a son, Antonio

Marie Kirby Duffey

   (VALLEY) Marie Kirby Duffey, 89, of Valley died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Lanier 
Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Chapel in 
Valley with the Rev. Mike Stonbraker officiating.  Burial followed in Langdale Cemetery.
   Mrs. Duffey is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Frank Elder of Valley, Mrs. Jack Mehaffey 
of Lanett and Mrs. Henry Word of Warner Robins, Ga.; her brother, Jack Kirby of 
Charleston, S.C.; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
   Born June 4, 1913, in Randolph County, Mrs. Duffey was a longtime member of 
Langdale United Methodist Church.  She was an avid gardener and was a former member 
of Glendale Garden Club of Langdale.  Mrs. Duffey was well known for her caramel and 
chocolate cakes.  She was a retired employee of West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill.  She 
was the daughter of the late Mittis Arnold Kirby and William Causey Kirby.
   The family kindly declines the gift of flowers and requests that memorials be made to 
Langdale United Methodist church in her memory.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Arline "Granny" Wright, 81, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, 
Jan. 18, 2003, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Wright, born Feb. 22, 1921, in LaGrange, was the daughter of the late Curtis D. 
and Ella Mae Lynch Bledsoe.  She had lived in LaGrange all her life and retired from West 
Point Stevens.  She was a member of Baptist Tabernacle.
   Survivors include two sons, Phillip King of LaGrange and Thomas King of Rockmart, 
Ga.; a brother, Leonard Bledsoe of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Eunice Costley of

   (ALBANY, Ga.) Margaret Ann Lumpkin Tyson, 60, of Albany, Ga., died Saturday, 
Jan. 18, 2003, at her residence.
   Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. at Hall & Hall Funeral Home in 
Albany with Bro. Bruce Smith and Bro. Mark Bullock officiating.  Burial was Tuesday, 
Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. in Shawmut Cemetery in Lanett with Bro. Mike Reeves and Bro. 
Raymond Sorrells officiating.
   Mrs. Tyson is survived by two daughters, Linda Crews of Albany and Starla White of 
Rock Mills; two sons, Benjamin Tyson of Albany and Michael Tyson of Valley; two 
brothers, Eldridge Lumpkin of LaGrange, Ga., and Duvard Lumpkin of North Augusta, 
S.C.; four sisters, Eva Mae Slay of Notasulga, Betty Hunt of Nashville, Tenn., and Mary 
Lumpkin and Sheila Lumpkin of Valley; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Born in West Point, Ga., Mrs. Tyson was formerly employed at Flint River Textiles.

Roma Wilson Harrington

   (GRIFFIN, Ga.) Roma Wilson Harrington, 78, of Griffin, Ga., died Saturday morning, 
Jan. 18, 2003, at Spalding Regional Hospital.
   She was born July 1, 1924, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Benjamin Hoyt 
Wilson and Eula Mae Traylor Wilson.  She was a homemaker and a member of Rehoboth 
Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Floyd Harrington Sr.
   Survivors include two sons, Floyd Harrington and James Harrington of Griffin; two 
brothers, B. H. Wilson Jr. and Fed Wilson of Woodland; four grandchildren; seven 
great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Services were Monday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Argin Floyd and officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

   A Randolph County native, Mr. Wilson was born Jan. 15, 1952, son of J. B. and Lonnie 
Mae Messer Wilson.  He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and had been assistant 
manager of Carport.  He was preceded in death by his father, J. B. Wilson.
   Survivors include his wife, O'Day Watts Wilson of Roanoke; his mother, Lonnie Mae 
Wilson of Roanoke; two daughters, Lynn Hill and Julie Watts of Roanoke; a son, Shane 
Spears of Ashland; one sister, Pauline Dean of Destin, Fla.; one brother, Frank Wilson 
of Woodland; and six grandchildren.

   Mrs. Radney died on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Chapman Healthcare Center.
   She was born on June 6, 1927, in Birmingham to Arthur J. Robertson and Otie Weldon 
Robertson.  She worked as a homemaker and was a member of Wadley United Methodist 
Church.  She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
   She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Hugh Radney Sr. of Wadley, sons, 
John Radney of McDonough, Ga., and James Radney Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters, 
Catherine Stringfellow of Wadley and Sue Lane of Valencia, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 
one great-grandchild; and other numerous family members and friends.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, George Robertson; a sister, 
Elizabeth Abbott; and a daughter, Ann Traylor.

Irene Whitmore Nichols

   (ROME, Ga.) Irene Whitmore Nichols, 82, of Rome, Ga., formerly of Columbus, Ga., 
died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in a Rome hospital.
   A native of Woodland, Mrs. Nichols was born June 28, 1920, daughter of the late 
Harvey Vester Whitmore and Pearl Buchanan Whitmore.  She was a resident of Columbus 
most of her life, working as a cosmetologist and in the apparel industry.  Mrs. Nichols was 
proud that she was able to serve her country during World War II by working at the Bell 
Bomber Plant in Marietta, Ga., where she assembled aircraft wings.  Mrs. Nichols was a 
member of Morningside Baptist Church in Columbus since 1953 where she volunteered in 
the library and visitation programs and taught the middle school youth class.  Mrs. Nichols 
was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Clestell Whitmore Daniel, Ernest 
Whitmore, Magdelene Whitmore Buchanan, Jimmy Ray Whitmore, Harvey Vester 
Whitmore Jr., Vesmer Whitmore Blount, Wallace Whitmore, Sylvester Whitmore, Fonzie 
Whitmore, Linda Ann Whitmore and Joe Whitmore.
   Survivors include her husband, Pierce A. Nichols of Rome, to whom she was married 
Dec. 25, 1939; brothers and sisters, Sherman Whitmore of Woodland, Loyce Whitmore 
Parker of Whitesburg, Ga., Elizabeth Whitmore Hicks and Alfred Whitmore of LaGrange, 
Ga., and Rachel Whitmore Bethea of Opelika.  Mrs. Nichols is also survived by a number 
of nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at noon CST Saturday, Jan. 18, at Providence Baptist Church in 
Woodland with the Rev. David Daniel officiating.  Interment followed in the church 
cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Brad Landreau, Mike Hester, Junior Whitmore, Chad Whitmore,

   Mr. Hester died Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A native of Heard County, Ga., Mr. Hester was born Nov. 3, 1909, son of Benjamin 
Allen and Lula Duke Hester.  He was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational Christian 
Church and had worked as a lume [loom?] fixer with Handley Mills and also worked for 
the Randolph County Highway Department.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Eris 
Beulah Hester.
   Survivors include five daughters, Beatrice Garrett and Helen Blakenship of Roanoke, 
Annis McKay and Juanita Burger of Macon, Ga., and Sara Steingraber of Woodstock, 
Ga.; one son, Jimmy Hester of LaGrange, Ga.; five sisters, Clara Rollins, Laura Stewart 
and Eunice Stewart, all of Woodland, Vivian Burdette of LaGrange and Faye Bennett of 
Wadley; one brother, Roland Hester of West Point, Ga.; ten grandchildren, 12 great- 
grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were James Stewart, Marlan Stewart, Benny Burdette, Tim Bennett, 
Arnold Rollins and Norman Stewart.

Thomas B. Bramlett Sr.

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Thomas B. Bramlett Sr., 84, of West Point, Ga., died Wednesday, 
Jan. 15, 2003, at Lanier Nursing Home in Valley.
   Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. EST at West Point First Baptist Church 
with the Rev. Mark McGee and Dr. Jerome King officiating.  Burial followed in Marseilles 
Cemetery in West Point.
   Mr. Bramlett is survived by his daughter, Becky Bailey of Montgomery; his son, 
Billy Bramlett of Lanett; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and four 
step-children.
   Born April 16, 1918, in Chambers County, Mr. Bramlett graduated from Handley High 
School in Roanoke and attended Auburn University.  He served as a pilot in the U.S. 
Army Air Force during World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.  He retired 
as production manager from Fairfax Mill, West Point Pepperell with 35 years service.  He 
was an active member of West Point First Baptist Church and the American Legion.  Mr. 
Bramlett was preceded in death by his wives, Marie Riley Bramlett and Hazel Piper 
Bramlett; his son, Tommy Bramlett; and his daughter, Sally Sullivan.  He was the son of 
the late Maybelle Green Bramlett and C. G. Bramlett Sr.
   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to West Point First Baptist 
Church.

Baptist Church in Dothan.  She was preceded in death by her husband, The Rev. Guy 
Bassett.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Gleemah Shaw Fincher, 97, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, 
Jan. 16, 2002[3], at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Fincher, born March 11, 1905, in Randolph County, was the daughter of the late 
James Angus and Mary Elizabeth Baldwin Shaw.  She had lived in LaGrange most of her 
life and was formerly employed at Callaway Mills.  She was also a homemaker who 
enjoyed gardening and was a member of Smyrna Pentecostal Fire Baptized Holiness 
Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Runette Smith of LaGrange; five grandchildren, 11 great- 
grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bonnie Spears and Inez 
Stephens of LaGrange and Lorene Knott of Powder Springs, Ga.; a brother, John Shaw of 
Fredonia; a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law and several nieces and nephews.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband Glumer Lee Fincher; and sisters and brothers, Bessie 
Cantrell, Myrtle McKee, Nettie Lou Holley, Horace Shaw, Carlis Shaw, Eris Hester and 
Arlie Shaw.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand chapel

   (TALLADEGA) Services for Frances Cameron of Talladega were Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, 
at 2 p.m. at Peace Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Rochelle J. Hall officiating.  
Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery with Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary in charge.
   Mrs. Cameron died Friday, Jan. 10, at her home.
   Survivors include a sister, Catherine Nicholson of Talladega; and three nieces, Margaret 
Lee, Hazel Jackson and Laura White, all of Talladega.
   Mrs. Cameron was a member of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a 
member of the choir, Willing Workers' Club and missionary society.  She was also a 
member of Temple 823 of the Elks.  She was a nurse for the late Dr. W. E. Brothers and 
had been employed by Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J.  She was supervisor of 
counseling at the Community Action Agency of Talladega-Clay-Randolph counties.  She 
attended Drewry High School.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom Pettus and 
Lucy Ester; two sons, Gregory Cameron and David Cameron; two sisters, Marie Lee and 
Celia Hood; and her husband, Mansfield Cameron.

   Mrs. Keeble was born June 19, 1919, in Randolph County, Ala.  She moved to Lakeland 
from Roanoke in 1959.  She was a cafeteria worker for Polk County School System and a 
member of New Beginnings Baptist Church, Lakeland.
   Survivors include her husband, Ernest T. Keeble of Lakeland; three sons, Bobby G. 
Keeble and Jacky E. Keeble of Lakeland and Charles D. Keeble of Tampa; one daughter, 
Harriett E. Johnson of Sylva, N.C.; two brothers, Travis Bassett of Lakeland and Gordan 
Bassett of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters Viola Thomas of Lakeland and Mary Baldwin of 
Birmingham; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Meriam Joenette Waller Bridwell

   (ROANOKE) Services for Meriam Joenette Waller Bridwell, 61, of Roanoke will be

   Mrs. Bridwell died Sunday, Jan. 26, after a brief illness, at East Alabama Medical 
Center.
   Mrs. Bridwell was born Dec. 19, 1941, in Opelika and lived there until moving to 
Roanoke in 1981.  She was a Baptist by faith.  Mrs. Bridwell was preceded in death by her 
parents, William and Annie B. Waller, and sister, Mary June Waller Shelby.
   Survivors include her husband, John Bridwell of Roanoke; a daughter, Angela Bridwell; 
two sisters, Shirley Ann Chance of Opelika and Gloria Elaine Spivey of Tallassee; two 
brothers, Daniel and David Waller of Opelika; a host of nieces and nephews.

Olin Hurston Martin

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Olin Hurston Martin, 72, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, 
Jan. 22, 2003, at Florence Hand Home.
   Mr. Martin, born Dec. 4, 1930, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of the late Henry 
and Avie Harden Martin.  He had lived in LaGrange most of his life and was an Army 
veteran of the Korean War.  He retired as a truck driver for West Point Stevens and was a 
member of Oakside Baptist Church.
   Survivors include three [children], Randy Martin of LaGrange, Sherry Scott of Pine 
Mountain, Ga., and Kathy Martin Worthy of Hogansville, Ga.; four brothers, Harlen 
Martin, Carlos Martin, Hollis Martin and Rodney Martin, all of LaGrange; a sister, 
Bernice Hubbard of LaGrange; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a cousin.  
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Grice Martin; a brother, Edward Martin; 
and a sister, Deira Walters.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand chapel with 
Dr. Ralph Taylor and the Rev. Jimmy Pruiett officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn 
Cemetery.

   (FIVE POINTS) Vera Pitts, 96, of Five Points died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at her 
residence.
   Services were at Five Points Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, with 
interment in Five Points Cemetery.  The Rev. Bob Karcher and the Rev. Yancey Sanders 
officiated.
   Mrs. Pitts was a native of Clay County, born Dec. 31, 1906.  She was a homemaker and 
a member of Union Hill Baptist Church of Randolph County.  She was preceded in death 
by her husband, Grady M. Pitts.
   Surviving are one daughter, Sara Crenshaw of Five Points; one son, Grady Pitts of 
Chesapeake, Va.; two sisters, Nell Morris of Lanett and Frances Sue Turner of Statesville, 
N.C.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.
