Miss Askew was born May 9, 1946. She is survived by one brother, Johnny Askew of Dothan; one sister, Linda Bailey of Roanoke; a special niece, Tammie Brooks of Roanoke; three other nieces and five nephews. Services were Saturday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Interment was in the Bailey Cemetery. Douglas Turner and Bro. Al Perkins officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens. Mr. Kitchens died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mr. Kitchens was born Sept. 21, 1922, son of Edward Oliver and Jessie Lester Kitchens. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, a member and deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church, and owner and operator of Jack Kitchens Pontiac-Buick-GMC. Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathaleen Bishop Kitchens of Roanoke; one daughter, Cindy Turner of Prattville; one son, Oliver Kitchens of Roanoke; four granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Ida Delle Bowen of Manchester, Ga.; and one brother, Joe Kitchens of Roanoke. Gilbert (BIRMINGHAM) Mary E. Gilbert, 82, of Birmingham died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan, Ga. Services were at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. Mrs. Gilbert was born April 18, 1920, in LaGrange, Ga., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Spivey. A former resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Gilbert attended Knight- Enloe Elementary School and Handley High School. She was a long-time Avon representative and a nutritional consultant for Jefferson County. Mrs. Gilbert was a homemaker and a devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, where she was active in the McDonnan-Allen Sunday School Class. She was a charter member of the Shades Mountain Quilters' Guild, a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, the Rock and Dale Garden Club and the Methodist Women's Club, and a member and past president of the Rose Strickland Study Club. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frederick Gilbert Sr.; one daughter, Joy Burgess of Roanoke; two sons, Dr. Fred Gilbert Jr. of Newnan and Charles Gilbert of Paris, Texas; a brother, Harold Spivey of Weaver; seven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Randolph County native, Mr. Benefield was born May 23, 1952, son of Bill and Hazel Burroughs Benefield. He had worked in construction most of his life. Survivors included his wife, Tammie Hunt Benefield of Roanoke; two daughters, Tiffany Clayton of Haton, Miss., and Cherish Benefield of Richmond, Va.; four sons, Ron Benefield of Augusta, W. Ms. Cameron died Monday, Dec. 23, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika. Ms. Cameron was born Sept. 7, 1925 in Roanoke to the late Frank and Ionie Strickland Goss. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in the Broughton community, where she was an active member until recent years. Ms. Cameron was preceded in death on March 20, 1999 by her husband of 53 years, Scott Cameron; a son, Joseph Scott Cameron; a daughter, Mary Sue Cameron; and a sister, Minnie Lou Goss. Ms. Cameron succumbed after a lengthy struggle with declining health. Mrs. Lewis died Monday, Jan. 6, at her home following an extended illness. A Roanoke resident since November 1990, Mrs. Lewis was a native of Newton, Miss., born Oct. 19, 1948, daughter of Curtis Eugene and Maudie Mildred Shoemaker Ward. Mr. Blakes was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia, and a brother, Major. On Aug. 7, 1967, he married the former Edna Holliday of Roanoke. While they had no children of their own, their mutual love for children drove them to open up their home to 13 children whom they raised and nurtured as their own. Mr. Blakes was a retired employee of the Roanoke Utilities Board, where he worked for 25 years. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. Mr. Blakes died after a year-long battle with cancer. Ed Rose officiating. Interment will be in Gilbertown Cemetery. Mr. Doggett, son of the late John Thomas and Mallie Mosley Doggett, died Sunday, Jan. 5, at Columbus Medical Center in Columbus, Ga. Mr. Doggett lived almost all his life in Gilbertown and was self-employed for most of his working life. Around the beginning of World War II, he drove a rolling store, and he worked in the Mobile Shipyard during the war. After the war, he ran a service station until he retired and managed the Gilbertown Senior Citizens' Nutrition Center. Just before the death of his wife Sarah, he came to live with his daughter, Lauren May, in Roanoke. The last few years of his life, he lived in Williamsburg Manor in Roanoke. Mr. Gilbert, as he was called by most around Gilbertown, was a member of Gilbertown United Methodist Church, former mayor of Gilbertown, a Mason, and a member of the Gilbertown Lions Club during its existence. He graduated from high school in Butler. He is survived by his daughter, Lauren D. May of Roanoke; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah G. Irene Whitmore Nichols, 82, of Rome, Ga., formerly of Columbus, Ga., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in a Rome hospital. A native of Woodland, Mrs. Nichols was born June 28, 1920, daughter of the late Harvey Vester Whitmore and Pearl Buchanan Whitmore. She was a resident of Columbus most of her life, working as a cosmetologist and in the apparel industry. Mrs. Nichols was proud that she was able to serve her country during World War II by working at the Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta, Ga., where she assembled aircraft wings. Mrs. Nichols was a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Columbus since 1953 where she volunteered in the library and visitation programs and taught the middle school youth class. Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Clestell Whitmore Daniel, Ernest Whitmore, Magdelene Whitmore Buchanan, Jimmy Ray Whitmore, Harvey Vester Whitmore Jr., Vesmer Whitmore Blount, Wallace Whitmore, Sylvester Whitmore, Fonzie Whitmore, Linda Ann Whitmore and Joe Whitmore.
