Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens. Mr. Johns died suddenly on Monday, July 3, at his home. A former Coosa County resident, Mr. Johns was born at Fort Benning, Ga., on May 19, 1952, son of Lester and Mary Smith Jones. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and the Alabama National Guard. He worked as a local lineman with Alabama Power Company. Survivors include his wife, Jane Ann Johns of Roanoke; his parents, Lester and Mary Johns of Hollins; one son, Chad Tidwell of Tallahassee, Fla.; one step-son, Kerry Whaley of Roanoke; his grandmother, Ruth Smith of Rossville, Ga.; and two sisters, Melody Tripp of Fayetteville, Ga., and Lynne Latham of Sterrett. Mr Johns was preceded in death by a brother, Steve. Mr. Johns will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Willie Johnson, Ralph Gooden, Dale Caldwell, Calvin Stowes, Doug Ford and Larry Hallman. Alabama Power Company Roanoke Office staff and crew will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Corinth Cemetery. Mrs. Braden died Thursday, June 29, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland. She was born in Clay County on Dec. 25, 1920, daughter of Alex and Vestula Salers Haynes. She was a seamstress at Higgins Slacks and a member of Corinth Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. O. Braden. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia MacRae of Jacksonville and Noma Ellen Norton of Heflin; two sisters, Mindy Lee Phillips of Delta and Georgia Brooks of Anniston; one brother, Carvel "Cub" Haynes of Delta; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lipham, a native of Carroll County, was born April 4, 1954, the daughter of Velma Caldwell Daniel and the late Curtis C. Daniel. She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and retired as a secretary with Carroll Technical Institute. Surviving are her husband, Jimmy W. Lipham of Carrollton; two sons, Adam Lipham and Clay Lipham of Carrollton; her mother, Mrs. Velma Caldwell Daniel of Bowdon, Ga.; and two sisters, Gerlene Stitcher of Wedowee and Jewell Stewart of Roopville, Ga. Brooks and Ethel Johnson Brooks. Mrs. Chadwick had been employed by Southern Bell for eight years and had worked for Wal-Mart for the past ten years. She was a member of Camp Ground United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Dinah Unchurch of Carrollton; two grandchildren; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be Wednesday, July 12, at 3 p.m. EDT at Camp Ground United Methodist Church in Graham, with the Rev. Tommy Willingham and the Rev. Kit Carson officiating. A Chambers County native, Mr. Smith was born Oct. 9, 1925, son of Andrew Kent and Lera Gross Smith. He was a World War II veteran and a member at Fellowship Baptist Church. He had worked as a district conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service. In 1987, the Smiths returned to make their home in Roanoke after residing in Vienna, Ga., for 37 years. Survivors include a wife, Frances Knight Smith of Roanoke; two sons, Kirby Wheeler Smith and Wendell Keith Smith of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Kutine Smith of Roanoke; three sisters, Callie Smith Adams of LaFayette, Rita Smith Buckenham of Opelika and Vivian Smith Morere of New Orleans, La.; one brother, Arthur Thain Smith of Cynthiana, Ky.; and two grandchildren. He served as minister of churches in Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. He was a member of North Main Congregational Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Anna T. A native of Wedowee, he was a son of the late Noah Daucie and Orga Lovvorn Burson and had lived in Reidsville for the past 43 years. A pharmacist, he was owner and operator of the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy and former manager of Mann Drug Store. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Norwood E. Robinson Sunday School Class and a former member of the Reidsville Rotary Club and Reidsville Elks Lodge #1723. He was past president of the Reidsville Merchant't Association, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, and a graduate of Auburn University. She was born in Randolph County on Jan. 23, 1930, daughter of James Monroe and Sara Matilda Cantrell Spears. She was employed at Wehadkee Yarn Mills and was a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Graham McCarley. Survivors include two daughters, Janice Yerigin of New Boston, Mich., and Gwen Nelson of Five Points; three sons, Wayne McCarley and Chris McCarley of Five Points and Tracy McCarley of Rock Mills; a sister, Rudean Bowen of Valley; 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Dubbins died Friday, July 21, at Brian Center in LaGrange. She was born in Chambers County on Nov. 28, 1905, daughter of William T. and Sula Howell Cumbee. She had been a public school teacher in Georgia and Alabama for 37 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in LaGrange. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Dobbins. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jewell Cumbee of LaGrange; a nephew, Duke H. Cumbee Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nieces, Carol Shelnutt of Stroud and Nelda Sharman of LaGrange; and several great nieces and nephews. Daisy Jones Gross, 74, of LaGrange died Friday, July 21, 2000 at Brian Center Nursing Care, LaGrange. Mrs. Gross was born Jan. 15, 1926, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Sam and Minnie Bolt Jones. She was retired from Kleen-Tex and had lived in LaGrange for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Teaver Road Baptist Church. Services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, at Teaver Road Baptist Church, LaGrange, with the Rev. Michael Reeves officiating. Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange. Survivors include her husband, Jack Gross of LaGrange; a daughter, Kaye Heard of Wedowee; four sisters, Pearlie Davis of Shawmut, Beatrice Bailey of Woodland, Hazel Williams of Roanoke, and Faye Mapp of Newnan, Ga.; one brother, Ray Jones of LaGrange; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myland, LaGrange. __________ William Lindsey Farr (VALLEY) Services for William Lindsey Farr, 68, of Valley, formerly of Roanoke and Mariette, Ga., were at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Derek Farr and Dennis Farr officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens. Mr. Farr died Tuesday, July 18, at his residence. He was born in Franklin, Ga., on Feb. 1, 1932, son of Ervin Britt and Leola Hallman Farr. He was employed in the upholstery business and was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Landmark Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann Neal Farr; his parents; a brother, Howard Farr; and a sister, Virginia Yates. Survivors include three daughters, Dajuana Cohran of Lanett, Delaina Burns of Roanoke and Danissa Kirk of Wadley; five sons, Dennis Farr of Valley, David Farr and Derek Farr of Roanoke, and Daryle Farr and Dwayne Farr of Lanett; three sisters, Winifred McCard, Opal Blackmon and Frances Sawyer, all of Roanoke; two brothers, Jimmy Farr and Donald Farr of Roanoke; and 16 grandchildren. Services for John Calvin White, 73, of St. Petersburg, Fla., were at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000 at Royal Palm Funeral Chapel, St Petersburg, with interment at Royal Palm North Cemetery. Services were conducted by the Rev. Robert Chaffee, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Mr. White, who died Saturday, June 17, at Edward White Hospital, St. Petersburg, was born in Roanoke on July 1, 1926, and was a graduate of Handley High School. He especially enjoyed attending his high school class reunions and meeting former classmates and old friends. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service and retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 25 years of service. He was a member of St. Petersburg Covenant Presbyterian Church and an ordained elder in the church. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 139, St. Petersburg, a member of the Order of Amaranth, the St. Petersburg Scottish Rites and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Hayes White; his parents, John Elbert White and Claudie Lee Waldrep White; and brothers Lester A. White and Horace Eugene White. He is survived by his wife of nine years, Marjorie White of St. Petersburg; a daughter, Diane Lamb of Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren; one great- grandson; two brothers, Billy B. White and Jack E. White of Opelika; three sisters, Margaret White Dollar of Dadeville, Mohee White Bozeman of Roanoke, and Ann White Lipham of Newell; and several nephews and nieces. __________ Emmett Nichols (FRANKLIN, GA.) The Rev. Emmett Nichols, 74, of Franklin, Ga., died at his home on July 19, 2000, after many years of declining health. Rev. Nichols was born in Randolph County on April 5, 1926, to the late Ed Nichols and Mary Freeman Nichols. He was a graduate of Auburn University and a retired manager for Sears Roebuck Company. For several years he served the Glenn Methodist Circuit as pastor. He faithfully served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Services were Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home in Franklin, the Rev. Talmadge Chandler officiating. Interment was in Randolph Memory Gardens in Rock Mills. Survivors include his wife, Eva Galloway Nichols of Franklin, one daughter, Phillis Lesho of Sharpsburg, Ga., two sons, Tomas Nichols and Nick Nichols of Whitesburg, Ga.; two brothers, Amos Nichols of Augusta, Ga., and Gordon Nichols of Indianapolis, Ind.; two aunts; and six grandchildren. Garry Brown officiating and the eulogy given by Tanya Johnson. Burial was in Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Spears died Monday, July 17, at Vencor Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. A native of Randolph County, Mr. Spears was born Jan. 11, 1920, son of Benjamin Ciscero and Lucy Hester Spears. He was owner of a clothing store in Roanoke and attended First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Pauline Prestridge Spears of Jacksonville; three daughters, Jean Johnson, Pepi Prescott and Pat Gorey of Jacksonville; a son, Jimmy Spears, of Jacksonville; two sisters, Allie Kirby and Mahelene Young of Roanoke; a brother, Jewell Spears of Barnesville, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. Pallbearers were Chuck Gorey, Craig Gorey, Graham Lewis, Wallace Walding, Hiram Stephens and Mike McCord. Honorary pallbearer was Buck Hanson.
