OBITUARIES:
 
Annie Lois Berry
   (ROANOKE) Annie Lois Berry, 61, of Roanoke died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at 
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services will be Thursday, Feb. 6, at noon at Deliverance Temple Church of God, 
Roanoke, with Elder Mark Phillips officiating.  Burial will be in Skyview Memorial 
Gardens, Welch.
   Survivors include two daughters, Audrua Berry and Dorothy Foster of Roanoke; a son, 
Tommy Harris of Roanoke; three brothers, Robert Berry and Roy Berry of Roanoke and 
Andrew J. Berry of Five Points; a sister, Sara Carlisle of Fredonia; seven grandchildren 
and several nieces and nephews.
   Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral 
Service.  The body will be placed in the church on [an] hour before services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Carol Worrell Turner

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Carol Worrell Turner, 41, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, 
Feb. 2, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Turner, born Dec. 9, 1961, in Roanoke, was the daughter of Dick and Rachel 
Worrell of LaGrange.  She lived in Troup County, Ga., most of her life and was employed 
with the Troup County Board of Education.  She was a member of the First Baptist 
Church on the Square, a member of the church youth ministry for several years and was 
involved in the youth soccer and baseball programs through the Troup County Parks and 
Recreation Department.
   In addition to her parents, survivors include three children, Jake Hembree, Lindsay 
Hembree, and Ella Turner, all of LaGrange; two sisters, Chris Batte' of Springfield, Va., 
and Carmen Keeter of Huntsville; a grandmother, Clara Johnson of Sanford, Fla., and a 
grandfather, John R. Bailey of Roanoke; one niece, four nephews and numerous aunts, 
uncles and cousins.
   Funeral service[s] were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at First Baptist Church on 
the Square with Dr. Paul R. Baxter, Dr. Bill Pope and the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating.  
Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to an educational fund for Mrs. Turner's 
children at Commercial Bank & Trust (CB&T) at P.O. Box 250, LaGrange, GA 30241.

Emerson Richard Lowry

   (ROANOKE) Services for retired Maj. Emerson Richard Lowry, USAF, 88, of 
Roanoke were Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Stoney Halsey and the Rev. Harold Bonner officiating.  Burial was at Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   Maj. Lowry died Saturday, Feb. 1, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A long-time Randolph County resident, Maj. Lowry was born Feb. 22, 1914, in 
Plymouth, Mass., son of Abraham and Nina Porter Wood Lowry.  He was a World War II 
Air Force veteran and served in the National Guard for 21 years.  He worked as a tree 
farmer and gunsmith.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Wylie Lowry; a 
brother, Robert Gregg Lowry; and a stepson, Kenneth Koone.
   Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Veal Lowry of Roanoke; three daughters, 
Carol Jean Lowry of Fort Payne, Nina Lowry Mitzkeil of Montgomery and Dean Lowry 
of Helena; a son, Mark Richard Lowry of Roanoke; one step-daughter, Angie Koone 
Cummings of Roanoke; one stepson, Fred Koone of Bremen, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 
one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Richard Blake Lowry, Benjamin Chase Lowry, Bobby Wylie, Jerry 
Pike, David Stephens and Charlie Boyd.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Mrs. L. K. Hardnett

   (ROANOKE) Mrs. L. K. Hardnett, 94, of Roanoke died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 
Clay County Hospital and Nursing Home, Ashland.
   Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Coger Hill C.M.E. Church, Daviston, 
with the Rev. Douglas Perry officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include a brother, Josh Hardnett of Daviston; a special granddaughter, Juanita 
Resse of Roanoke; seven other grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great- 
grandchildren; and a special nephew, Arthur Oliver of Lineville.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Ada Hardnett; her husband, Henry 
Hardnett; a brother, Albert Hardnett; and three sisters, Ella Marson, Minnie Blackmon and 
Mary Oliver.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Bruce L. Perry

   (HUNTSVILLE) Bruce L. Perry, 84, of Huntsville, formerly of Lanett, died Friday, 
Jan. 31, 2003, at Cogburn Nursing Facility, Huntsville.
   Surviving are his wife, Sybil Baird Perry; a son, Danny Ray Perry of Huntsville; a 
daughter, Susan Lee of Clarksville, Tenn.; four sisters, Donell Peters and Jo Reaves of 
Lanett, Frances Stephens of Valley and Louise Mitchum of Roanoke; two brothers, 
Harold Perry of Valley and Verlie Perry of Lanett; three grandchildren and one 
great-grandchild.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 11 a.m. 
on Monday, Feb. 3, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  Dr. Brian Wyatt and the Rev. 
Donnie Erwin-Brown officiated.
   Mr. Perry was born in Chambers County on Oct. 21, 1918, son of the late Mary Jim 
Owens Perry and the late Alver Perry.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II 
and had been employed with West Point Pepperell's Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works.  
In addition, he and his wife owned and operated Perry Fabrics in Lanett for more than 
50 years.  He was an active member of Lanett First United Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Roy L. Pope

   (WETUMPKA) Roy L. Pope, 66, of Wetumpka died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
   Graveside services were Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery in 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Kenneth Johnson officiating.
   Mr. Pope was a veteran of the Army and retired from the civil service from the Air War 
College at Maxwell Air Force Base.
   He is preceded in death by his parents, Carson and Velma Pope; sister, Peggy Pope; and 
a brother, Billy Pope.
   He is survived by two daughters, Molly Broadway and Forrest Shayne Kuczmarski; 
two grandchildren; one brother, Johnny Pope; and two sisters, Patricia Irwin and Terry 
Williams.
   Arrangements were by Leak Memory Chapel, Montgomery.

Ollie Mae Willett

   (ATTALLA) Services for Ollie Mae Willett, 89, of Attalla were Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, 
at 2 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel in Jacksonville with 
the Rev. David Daniels officiating.  Burial was in Halls Chapel Cemetery with K.L. Brown 
Funeral Home in charge.
   Mrs. Willett died Thursday, Jan. 30, at home.
   Survivors include two brothers, Ira Kelley of Glencoe and R. C. Kelley of East Gadsden; 
and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Willett was a Randolph County native and lived in Calhoun County most of her 
life.  She was a longtime member of Tredegar Chapel Congregational Church.

George Alfred Green

   (WOODLAND) Services for George Alfred Green, 71, of Woodland were Friday, 
Jan. 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Bobby Kirby and 
David Daniel officiating.  Burial followed at the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Green died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Green was born Feb. 18, 1931, son of George 
Washington and Tinnie Noles Green.  He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, was a 
cattle-poultry farmer, a Woodland merchant for a number of years and was a veteran of 
the Air Force.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elender Green of Woodland; one daughter, Marie Gay 
of Newell; two sons, Alan Green of Atlanta and James Green of Woodland; two sisters, 
Bernice Lovvorn of Woodland and Runell Johnson of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, Ray 
Green of Graham; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Justin Gay, Lane Gay, Owen Henderson, Bobby Ray Green, 
Bruce Green, Bill Lovvorn, Jerry Johnson, Todd Trainer and Tony Trainer.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Evelyn R. Jones

   (ROANOKE) Evelyn R. Jones, 73, of Roanoke died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Service were Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, William Poole of Roanoke and Michael Jones of Saginaw, 
Mich.; a daughter, Vickie Jones of Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren and two great- 
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Sr. and Mary Roundtree; 
four brothers, Fred Jr., Thomas, William and Raymond Roundtree; and five sisters, Mary 
L. Magby, C'Belle Perksin, Lizzie Longshore, Francis Miller and Nora Fears.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

John D. 'Bozo' Brooks

   (ANNISTON) Services for John D. "Bozo" Brooks, 81, of Anniston were Saturday, 
Feb. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel with Rev. L. C. Harris 
officiating.  Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens with Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel in 
charge.
   Mr. Brooks died Thursday, Jan. 30, in Anniston.
   Survivors include his wife, Georgia Haynes Brooks of Anniston; two daughters, Gail 
Brooks Pogue and Patsy Brooks Stubbs of Oxford; a son, Jerry Wayne Brooks of 
Gadsden; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were David Stubbs, Andrew Stubbs, Scott Pogue, Michael Pogue, Bruce 
Odom, Danny Caylor, Mark Elam, Brian Culverhouse, and Jamie Hamilton.
   Mr. Brooks was a Randolph County native and a longtime Anniston resident.  He was a 
Baptist and a member of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, VFW and the American Legion.  
He was a salesman for Quality Beverage and Budweiser.
   Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Elks Scholarship Fund,

Mildred Dora Orr

   (MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla.) Services for Mildred Dora Orr, 84, of Miami Springs, Fla., 
formerly of Roanoke, were Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial followed at Mt. Zion Christian 
Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Orr died Monday, Jan. 27, at Hialeah Hospital in Hialeah, Fla.
   A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Orr was born Sept. 1, 1918, daughter of Jobson 
and Ethel Morris Swint.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Orr.
   Survivors include one son, Jimmy Orr of Miami, Fla.
   Pallbearers were Jake Morris, Gary Burks, Shane Burks, Tracy Gilliam, W. R. Bennett 
and James B. Orr.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Fred Butler

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Fred Butler, 72, of Roanoke were Friday, Jan. 31, 
2003, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Bill Calhoun, Tim Whaley, 
Theo Arnett and Ridley Herren officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Butler died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at his residence.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Butler was born June 11, 1930, son of John Henry and 
Jessie Lee Kitchens Butler.  He had worked as a loom mechanic at Dunson Mills in 
LaGrange and was a member of Levins Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Doris McKee Butler of Roanoke; three daughters, 
Glenda Rogers of Woodland and Cathy Windsor and Lisa Taylor of Roanoke; two sons, 
Jimmy Butler of Roopville, Ga., and Wayne Butler of LaGrange, Ga.; one sister, Mary 
Harrington of Woodland; two brothers, John Butler of Eclectic and Millard Butler of 
LaGrange; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Mike Bible, Eddy Perry, Donald Woodyard, Ray Hegwood, Don 
Turner, Jack Gross, Ricky White, Carlos Santos and Donald Davidson.  Honorary 
pallbearers were Mr. Bell, Mr. Daniel, Tim Harper and David Harper.

Daphyne McDaniel Norton

   (ROANOKE)  Memorial services for Daphyne McDaniel Norton, 69, of Roanoke will 
be held Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Jacky 
Garrett officiating.
   Mrs. Norton died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at her residence.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Norton was born Sept. 23, 1933, daughter of Herman 
S. and Ethel Hunt McDaniel.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Norton.
   Survivors include one daughter, Dawn Norton of Roanoke; and one sister Juanita Heard 
of Jackson
   The family will receive family at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Friday, Feb. 7, from 
9 to 11 a.m.
   Memorials may be floral or donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice.

OBITUARIES:

Galdys [Gladys] Welch

   (LAFAYETTE) Gladys Welch, 89, of LaFayette died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 
Columbus Medical Center, Columbus, Ga.
   Services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m., with interment 
in Sims Cemetery.  Elder Bobby Sizemore officiated.
   Mrs. Welch was born in Chambers County on Oct. 13, 1913.  She was retired from 
Clegg Manufacturing Company and was a member of Mt. Hickory Primitive Baptist 
Church, LaFayette.
   Surviving are three children, Larry Welch of Milton, Fla., Linda A. Welch of LaFayette 
and Peggy Fleckenstein of Albertville; two sisters, Lois Abercrombie and Kate Allen of 
Valley; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Edward Eugene 'Gene' Kirklin Sr.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Edward Eugene "Gene" Kirklin Sr., 67, of LaGrange, Ga., 
died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mr. Kirklin, born Aug. 15, 1935, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of Mandy 
Hester Kirklin and the late Johnny Eugene Kirklin.  A self-employed roofer, he had lived 
in LaGrange all his life and was an Army veteran.  He was a former member of Union 
Road Baptist Church.
   Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 18 years, Wanda A. Stenger; 
six daughters, Susan Vaughn of Douglasville, Ga., Sherrill Brown of Juliette, Ga., Sandy 
Adkins of Panama City, Fla., Donna Taylor of LaGrange, Ga., Heather Kirklin of 
Madison, Ga., and Lisa Wimberly of Dry Branch, Ga.; three sons, Barry Kirklin, Lamar 
Kirklin and Gene Kirklin Jr., all of LaGrange; 25 grandchildren and a sister, Frances 
Kirklin of LaGrange.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Pointer.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary with the Rev. Rufus Thornton officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Charlie Will Prothro Rutlin Sr.

   (GRAHAM) Charlie Will Prothro Rutlin Sr., 75, of Graham died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2003, 
at Wedowee Hospital.
   Services were Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 
Wedowee, with the Rev. William Crawford officiating.  Interment was in Bethenia United 
Methodist Church Cemetery, Graham.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alberta Prothro Rutlin of Graham; two sons, Charlie 
Rutlin Jr. of Alexander City and Wallace Jerry Rutlin of Wedowee; three daughters, Mrs. 
Geraldine Boyd of Wedowee and Mrs. Ellen Patillo and Mrs. Margaret Hamner of 
Lineville; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Alice Houston of Graham; one brother, Jimmy 
Prothro of Micaville; and three sisters, Ms. Pinky Boyd of Micaville and Ms. Winnie 
Baker and Ms. Judy Lee Prothro of Atlanta, Ga.
   Mr. Rutlin was born April 7, 1927, in Wedowee to the late Neal and Kate Roundtree 
Rutlin.  He was a life-long member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church in 
Wedowee.  He was the former husband of the late Anna Lee Goodwin Rutlin.  He later 
married Ms. Alberta Askew, to whom he remained faithfully wed for 26 years.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Rachel T. Sanders

   (BIRMINGHAM) Rachel T. Sanders, 89, of Birmingham, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003.
   Mrs. Sanders was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Wedowee, daughter of the late Charles Albert 
Tennant Sr. and Nancy Carpenter Tennant.  She was a longtime member of Deerfoot 
Baptist church, formerly 85th Street Baptist Church, where she was involved with the 
nursery, children's activities and her Sunday school class.  She had a love for children, 
taking care of some of the church family's children as well as others in her home.
   Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert A. Sanders; a 
daughter, Nancy Ann Sanders Hughes; and two brothers, Thomas E. Tennant and Joe. F. 
Tennant.
   She is survived by her brothers, William B. Tennant of Chesapeake, Va., and Charles A. 
Tennant Jr. of Dublin, Ga.; three sisters, Ruth T. Yarbrough of Bainbridge, Ga., Sara T. 
Benefield of Hoover and Mary Jane Shumate of Tuscaloosa; and two grandchildren.
   Services were Thursday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, with burial at 
Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.  Dr. Wayne Scott officiated.
   Arrangements were by Ridout's Trussville Chapel.

Robert Sanford Poole

   (ROANOKE) Robert Sanford Poole, 51, of Roanoke died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, 
in Roanoke.
   Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Felecia Trammell Nelson of LaFayette; five 
grandchildren; two aunts; a special cousin, Mrs. Angel June Robinson of Roanoke; and 
a host of relatives and friends.
   Services for Mr. Poole were Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at Mount Bethel United 
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lathonia Wright officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon and Son Funeral Services, Roanoke.

William 'Billy' Culligan

   (ANNISTON) Services for William "Billy" Culligan, 67, of Anniston were Tuesday, 
Feb. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville with Bro. Vann 
Bowen officiating.  Burial was in Lystra Baptist Church Cemetery with Benefield Funeral 
Home in charge.
   Mr. Culligan died Sunday, Feb. 9, at Regional Medical Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Edna Mitchell Culligan of Anniston; a daughter, Sherry 
Hayes of Alexander City; two sons, James Culligan and Wayne Culligan, both of 
Alexander City; a brother, Pat Culligan of Ashland; nine grandchildren and five great- 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bo Culligan, Brian Culligan, Shaun Culligan, Derek Humphrey, 
Cory Adair, Elbert Mitchell and John Lee Mitchell.
   Mr. Culligan was a Randolph County native and lived most of his life in Ashland and 
Anniston.  He was self-employed and an Army veteran.

Donald N. Paulson

   (COMMERCE, Ga.) The Rev. Donald N. Paulson, 67, of Commerce, Ga., died 
Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at his residence.
   Rev. Paulson was born in June 17, 1935, in San Diego County, Calif., son of the late 
Louise Wood Paulson and the late William Oniel Paulson.  He was a retired lieutenant 
commander in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a chaplain.  He was a former pastor of 
Roanoke First Baptist Church, Southside Baptist Church and Malone Baptist Church.  He 
was pastor-emeritus of First Baptist Church of Commerce, Jackson County Sheriff's 
Department chaplain, and a member of the Commerce Kiwanis Club.
   Survivors include his wife, Cecelia Gayle Mann Paulson of Commerce; two sons, 
Christopher Nels Paulson of Commerce and Michael William Paulson of Opelika; a 
brother, William Oneil Paulson of Attalla; and two grandchildren.
   Services will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, at First Baptist Church of Commerce, 
with the Rev. Kent Cranford, the Rev. Mark Fite and Dr. Huey Perry officiating.  Burial 
will be in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.  Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on 
Wednesday at Little-Ward Funeral Home in Commerce.

Hazel Craft New

   (ANNISTON) Services for Hazel Craft New, 86, of Anniston were Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, 
at 11 a.m. at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory Chapel.  Burial was in 
Forestlawn Gardens Cemetery with Gray Brown-Service in charge.
   Mrs. New died Tuesday, Feb. 4, at National Health Care.
   Survivors include four brothers, Hobart Craft of Sequin, Texas, Herbert Craft and David 
Craft, both of Anniston, and Herman Craft of Montgomery.

   Mrs. New was a Randolph County native and had lived in Anniston since 1937.  She 
was a member of Carpenter United Methodist Church and the Crusaders Sunday School 
Class.  She was a member of the Anniston Woman's Civic Club and the American 
Association of Retired Persons.  She was preceded in death by her husband, O'Neal New.

Rebecca Fuller Barner

   (TAMPA, Fla.) Rebecca "Becky" Fuller Barner, 49, of Tampa, Fla., died Jan. 21, 2003.
   Born in Florence, Ala., Becky was a resident of Tampa for more than 20 years.
   Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Barner Jr.; a daughter, Caroline Grace Barner 
of Tampa; a sister, H. Grace Fuller of Newport News, Va.; and two nephews.  She was 
preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Arnold Fuller of Roanoke; her father, Thomas 
Page Fuller of Opelika; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Arnold of 
Roanoke.
   Becky worked for Aetna Insurance for more than 23 years in Hartford, Atlanta and 
Tampa.
   Interment will be at Rosemere Cemetery in Opelika at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Rebecca Perry Simpson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Rebecca Perry Simpson, 72, of Roanoke will be Thursday, 
Feb. 20, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Jones 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Simpson died Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A former resident of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Simpson was born March 18, 1930 in 
Randolph County, daughter of James and Martha Williamson Perry.  She had been 
employed as a textile sewing machine operator with Play-Tex.
   Survivors include her husband, Gaines Simpson; two sons, Terry Simpson of Roanoke 
and Thomas Wayne Simpson of Catharage, Mo.; four brothers, Cooper Perry of Roanoke, 
John Thomas Perry of Opelika, Gary Perry of Valdosta, Ga., and Benny Perry of Uriah; 
five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, from 
2 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Wayne Wilson Ward

   (ROANOKE) Services for Wayne Wilson Ward, 64, of Roanoke, were Sunday, 
Feb. 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at White's Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Don Quick officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Ward died Friday, Feb. 14, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Mr. Ward was born May 19, 1938, in Randolph County, son of William T. and Lois 
Wilson Ward.  He had been employed as a salesman with Twin City Wholesale.
   Survivors include his wife, Eulette Kirby Ward; one daughter, Donna Hodges of 
Roanoke; one son, Bill Ward of Valley; one sister, Janie Cobb of Roanoke; three brothers 
William T. Ward of Newnan, Ga., Larry Ward of Roanoke and John Ward of Dalton, Ga.; 
and four grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheri Ward Chamblee.
   The family suggest memorial contributions be made to White's Chapel United Methodist 
Church.

Annie Lee Bailey

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Annie Lee Bailey, 80, of LaGrange died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, 
at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Bailey was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Luther 
and Lura Whitmore Cofield.  She and her husband lived throughout Michigan, California 
and Texas during and after World War II, in which she served her country as a Rosie the 
Riveter.  They returned to LaGrange to raise their family, where she later owned and 
operated a florist shop, Ann Bailey's Flowers and Gifts, for 42 years.  As a member of 
Franklin Road Baptist Church and the Troup and Heard County communities, Ann 
delighted in providing pretty flowers and her signature sweet touch to all her friends and 
customers' needs.  She loved travel, people, family and a good joke.
   Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at Franklin Road Baptist Church, with 
the Rev. Jimmie L. Willis and the Rev. R. C. Prescott officiating.  Burial will be in 
Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   Survivors include her husband, Huey G. "Sam" Bailey of LaGrange; three children, Jim 
Bailey of Gabbettville, Ga., Sammy Bailey of Franklin, Ga., and Dolly Fowler of 
LaGrange; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Maryjane Embry of 
LaGrange; two brothers, Hope Cofield and Danny Cofield of LaGrange; and several 
nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Cofield.

memory of Mrs. Bailey.

Thomas Clifford Smyrl

   (WADLEY) Services for Thomas Clifford Smyrl, 86, of Wadley were Saturday, 
Feb. 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Wadley First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. 
Albert Satcher and Abi Carlisle-Wilke officiating.  Burial was in Wadley City Cemetery.
   Mr. Smyrl died Thursday, Feb. 13, in Clay County Hospital.
   A Randolph County resident, Mr. Smyrl was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Tallapoosa County, 
son of Johnny and Eveline Hand Smyrl.  He served in the United States Army in World 
War II in the 7th Armored Division.  He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, 
Blinded Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion, and 
Wadley First United Methodist Church.  He had been employed with Perry's and was a 
truck driver.
   Mr. Smyrl was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Eveline Smyrl; and two 
sisters, Annie Prather and Eleanor Stevens.
   Survivors include his wife, Hazel Smyrl of Wadley; and one daughter, Amy Smyrl of 
Leeds.
   Pallbearers were Bill Rogan, Elliott Cotney, Joel Perry, Stanley Cotney, Richard Cotney 
and Jessie Elliott.
   The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wadley First United Methodist

   (ROANOKE) Services for Harold L. Williams, 70, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Feb. 18,

   Mr. Williams died Sunday, Feb. 16, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Williams was born March 14, 1932, son of Paul E. and 
Ollie Sue Lovorn Williams.  He had been employed as a carpenter with Batson and Cook.  
He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Williams.
   Survivors include his wife, Maudine Williams; three daughters, Laraine Mayfield and 
Lisa Swann of Roanoke and Michelle Whitewater of Owasso, Okla.; three step-daughters, 
Shirley Rozelle and Shelia Crenshaw of Woodland and Joyce Hill of Roanoke; two 
step-sons, Frankie Dewberry of Wedowee and Billy Dewberry of Woodland; one sister, 
Flonnie Robinson of Roanoke; two brothers, Robert Williams of Roanoke and Ernest 
Williams of LaGrange, Ga.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine 
step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

   (TALLADEGA) Services for Inez Grogan Carpenter, 86, of Talladega were Tuesday, 
Feb. 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Bemiston Baptist Church in Talladega with Rev. John H. 
Whetstone Jr. officiating.  Burial was in Pine Hill Memorial Park with Usrey Funeral 
Home in charge.
   Mrs. Carpenter died Sunday, Feb. 16, at Talladega Health Care.
   Survivors include her husband, Charles Oneal Carpenter of Talladega; a [son], Richard 
Carpenter of Sugar Hill, Ga.; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two 
great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law.
   Pallbearers were George Bishop, J. W. Baker, Travis Ray, Lofton Smith, Bob Eason 
and William McCormick.
   Mrs. Carpenter, a Randolph County native, lived most of her life in Talladega.  A 
member of Bemiston Baptist Church, her ministry took her to Georgia, Florida and North 
Carolina.  She worked many years in the jewelry business.  She was preceded in death by 
a daughter, Ethel Mae Carpenter; and a son, Jerry Wayne Carpenter.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mrs. Frances Lane Tidwell, 76, of Roanoke were Tuesday,

Hoyt Noel officiating.  Burial was in New Hope Congregational Christian Church 
Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Tidwell died Sunday, Feb. 16, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Tidwell was born April 12, 1926, in Randolph County, 
daughter of J. D. and Emma Dewberry Lane.  She was a homemaker.
   Survivors include her husband, Jack Tidwell; two daughters, Jennifer Caldwell of 
Wadley and Jackie Tidwell of Roanoke; two sons, Donald Tidwell of Roanoke and David 
Tidwell of Beulah; two sisters, Mildred Perry of Roanoke and Sue Gibson of Wadley; 
eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dorothy G. Waters

   (NEWELL) Graveside services for Dorothy G. Waters, 73, of Newell were Friday, 
Feb. 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Wedowee City Cemetery, with the Rev. Julian Murphy

   Ms. Waters died Tuesday, Feb. 11, at LaGrange Hospice in LaGrange.
   Ms. Waters was a native of Prairie Gragg, Abbeville, La.  Born on Dec. 28, 1929, 
daughter of Eddie Geautreaux and Olita' Broussard Geautreaux, she was the oldest of 
three children.  She worked as a seamstress for a number of years.
   Ms. Waters is survived by a daughter and a son.  Her caretakers were Mike and 
Scott Nobbley of Newell.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Mirium Loleita McLeroy

   (HEFLIN) Services for Miriam Loleita McLeroy, 88, of Heflin were Thursday, Feb. 13, 
2003, at 2 p.m. at Corinth Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Rasberry officiating.  Burial 
was in the church cemetery with Dryden Funeral Home in charge.
   Mrs. McLeroy died Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Coffey of Heflin; a son, Blake McLeroy of 
Coldwater; three sisters, Yvona Huddleston of Corinth, Marie McLeroy of Anniston and 
Gwendola Teague of Saks; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jason Coffey, Mathew Huddleston, Walter Huddleston, Wayne 
Huddleston, Alan McLeroy and Craig Thompson.
   Mrs. McLeroy was a native of the Corinth community of Randolph County and a 
member of Corinth Methodist Church.

E. H. Baker Jr.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) E. H. Baker Jr., 82, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at his residence.
   Mr. Baker was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Cleburne County, son of the late Enoch H. and 
Essie Estella Williamson Baker Sr.  In 1959 Mr. Baker founded Baker Battery Co., where 
he worked until his retirement in 1987.  He was a member of Loyd Presbyterian Church 
and a former elder.
   He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Winnie Parker Baker of LaGrange; two 
daughters, Nancy Dumas of Forsyth, Ga., and Susan Elliott of Augusta, Ga.; one son, 
Terry Baker of LaGrange; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Katie 
Rampy of Woodland; and numerous extended family members.
   Services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Loyd Presbyterian Church, with 
Dr. Tony Dean and the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating.  Burial was in Loyd Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Loyd Presbyterian Church building fund 
or the Music Department.

Minnie Brown Cook

   (VALLEY) Minnie Brown Cook, 72, of Valley died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at Florence 
Hand Home in LaGrange, Ga.
   Funeral services were Thursday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. EST at McCarthy Funeral Home 
Chapel in West Point, Ga., with Dr. Jerome King officiating.  Burial followed in Oakwood 
Cemetery in Lanett.
   Mrs. Cook is survived by her husband, retired Col. James Herman Cook of Valley; her 
daughter, Debra C. Aman of Columbus, Ga.; two sons, James M. Cook of Gulf Breeze, 
Fla., and George M. Cook of Columbus; three grandchildren; and her brother, J. Gurson 
Brown of Fredonia.
   Born March 19, 1930, in Randolph County, Mrs. Cook was formerly employed at 
Fairfax Mill Towel Department and as a receptionist at George H. Lanier Memorial 
Hospital in Valley.  She had been a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, and also 
volunteered at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.  Mrs. Cook was a member of 
Shawmut First Baptist Church.  She was the daughter of the late Eunice Whaley Brown 
and G. T. Brown.
   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Shawmut First Baptist 
Church Building Fund, 2300 23rd Dr., Valley, AL 36854.

Church in Penton with the Rev. Justin Freeman officiating.  Burial followed in Standing

   Mr. Ross is survived by his wife, Mrs. Willie Jean Ross of Roanoke; two sons, James 
Phillips and Standers Ross Jr., both of Roanoke; six daughters, Bettie Avery, Julia Woody, 
Kathy Wright and Betty Holloway, all of Roanoke, Barbara Bush of Opelika and Angela 
Ross of Florida; his adopted daughter, Susie Stone of Penton; six sisters, Judy Leverette, 
Dyann Evans, Jackie Cartwright, Jeanette Ross and Sylivia Vines, all of LaFayette, and 
Patricia Poole of Wadley; three brothers, Forrest Ross of Penton, Jeff Ross of Opelika and 
J. D. Ross of Atlanta; his mother, Beulah Mae Ross, and his father, Seabon Ross, both of

Herschel James Farr

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Herschel James Farr, 70, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Chicago, were Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. from Randolph Memory Gardens with 
the Rev. Jamie Taylor officiating.
   Mr. Farr died Tuesday, Feb. 11, at East Alabama Medical Center following an extended 
illness.
   A Heard County, Ga., native, Mr. Farr was born Oct. 15, 1932, son of Henry Grady and 
Nell Yarbrough Farr.  He was a retired major in the Army and a veteran of World War II, 
the Korean and Vietnam wars.  He had been awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, 
Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, 
Presidential Unit Citation, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 10-year device.  Mr. 
Farr was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Farr and Glenn Farr; and 
a sister, Ruby Calhoun.
   Survivors include his wife, Rachel Huey Farr of Roanoke; step-daughter, Stephanie 
Lagerman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepson, Marty Fallin of Roanoke; a brother, 
Harold Farr of Albany, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, three step-grandchildren; and several 
nieces and nephews.

Ora Butler Driver

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Ora Butler Driver, 86, of LaGrange, Ga., formerly of Hogansville, 
Ga., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Driver, born March 22, 1916, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the 
late Enoch and Mae Annie Pearl Kittle Butler.  She had lived in Troup County 40 years, 
having previously lived in Heard County, Ga.   She was a member of Springhill Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include five sons, Harlis Driver and Jimmy Driver of LaGrange, Billy Driver 
of Five Points, Larry Driver of Mobile and Roger Driver of Luthersville, Ga.; three sisters, 
Ary Skinner of Franklin, Ga., Cassie Bowen of Graham and Judy Smartt of Tucker, Ga.; 
a brother, Denson Butler of Franklin; 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 12 
great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Garfield Driver; 
and two sons, J. R. "Buck" Driver and Bobby Driver.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the chapel of Claude A. McKibben 
and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Peak officiating.  Burial was in Myrtle Hill 
Cemetery.

Annie Pearl Lee

   (YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) Annie Pearl Lee, 78, of Youngstown, Ohio died Saturday, 
Feb. 8, 2003 at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, Youngstown.
   Services were Friday, Feb. 14, at noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Youngstown, with 
the Rev. Jack W. Pettis officiating.  Interment was in Green Haven Gardens, Austintown, 
Ohio.
   Mrs. Lee was born Aug. 5, 1924 in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of Izora Houston.  
She moved to Youngstown in 1954 and worked as a housekeeper and a cook at Sears 
Company, retiring in 1985.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Churchs, its No. II 
Usher Ministry and Mission Ministry, and Rosa Mary Sewing Club.
   Surviving are four sons, Michael Houston, with whom she made her home, and Danny, 
James and Mark Houston, all of Youngstown; five daughters, Alberta Settles and Deidra 
Washington of Atlanta, Ga., Hattie Ellerbee and Barbara Wilkins of Philadelphia, Pa., and 
Loraine Brinson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death in January 1976 by her husband, Robert, whom she married 
in 1972; a daughter, Dorothy Dogan; and a son, William Houston.
   Arrangements were by L. E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home, Youngstown.

Preston C. Branch

   (WADLEY) Services for Preston C. Branch, 89, of Wadley were Sunday, Feb. 16, 
2003, at 2 p.m. at New Site Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Shaw and the Rev. 
Donna Thornburg officiating.  Burial was in Bethany Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery 
with Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville in charge.
   Mr. Branch died Friday, Feb. 14, at his home.
   Survivors include two daughters, Rachel Meadows of Dadeville and Becky Hicks of 
Opelika; a son, Gary Branch of Wadley; two sisters, Pauline Goodson of New Site and 
Gaither Newby of Lanett; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  
   Pallbearers were Charles Aaron Branch, Edwin Branch, Harold Crowder, Branch 
Goodson, George Goodson and Wayne Branch.
   Mr. Branch was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County.  He was an Army veteran 
of World War II and was a former employee of Russell Company.  He had been a bus 
driver for the Clay County school system and was a member of New Site Methodist 
Church.
   He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Branch, and a grandson, Ashley 
Meadows.

Morris Martin

   (LAFEYTTE) Morris Martin, 85, of LaFayette died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at his 
residence.
   Graveside services were at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, with interment in LaFayette 
City Cemetery.  The Rev. Joyce Woodstuff officiated.
   Surviving are his wife, Mildred Martin of LaFayette; a daughter, Ramona Hood of 
LaFayette; a son, Sanford Martin of Panama City, Fla.; three sisters, Kathleen Rutherford 
of Calhoun, Ga., and Jessie Wade and Madine Pitts of Talladega; two brothers, Aldus 
Martin and John Thomas Martin of Talladega; and four grandchildren.  He was preceded 
in death by a brother, Woodfin Martin, and a sister, Nelda Germany.
   Mr. Martin was born in Clay County on July 10, 1917.  He was an Army veteran of 
World War II and a member of First United Methodist Church of LaFayette.  He was 
retired from the Soil Conservation Service and later sold cars for Hinkle Chevrolet, Bence 
and Morris Pontiac and Fuller Ford.

   (WADLEY) Services for Annie Maude Kennedy, 96, of Wadley were Saturday, Feb. 15,

Kytan officiating.  Burial was in Bethany Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Daviston 
with Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland in charge.
   Mrs. Kennedy died Thursday, Feb. 13, at Lineville Nursing Facility.
   Survivors include two sons, Don Kennedy of New Site and Glenn Kennedy of Wadley; 
11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Gary Kennedy, Doug Kennedy, Ron Kennedy, Robert Maddox, Barry 
Maddox and Jeremy Bazinaw.  Honorary pallbearers were the staff of Lineville Nursing 
Facility.
   Mrs. Kennedy, a Randolph County native, lived most of her life in Clay County.  She 
was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and was a homemaker.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, John T. Morgan Kennedy; and two daughters, Louise Smith and 
Ruth "Jim" Gregg.

   Mr. Bearden died Thursday, Feb. 13, at Regional Medical Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Bessie Key Bearden of Blue Mountain; two sons, J. D. 
Bearden of Heflin and K. C. Bearden of Blue Mountain; two daughters, Isabel Mize of 
Blue Mountain and Leola Lumpkin of Heflin; 19 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 
35 great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Dessie Bible of Anniston and Evis Lindley 
of Wedowee.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Mr. Bearden retired from Dresser Industries, now known as Blue Mountain Industries.  
He was a deacon at Pilgrims Rest #2 in Randolph County and was preceded in death by a 
son-in-law; a great-grandchild, Whitney Bearden; five brothers and four sisters.

Russell Mabrey Smith

   (OPELIKA) A memorial service for Russell Mabrey Smith, 64, of Opelika was Friday, 
Feb. 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel in Opelika with the Rev. Tim 
Thompson officiating.
   Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Opelika.
   Born April 21, 1938, in Roanoke, Mr. Smith had been a resident of Opelika since 1970.  
He had been very active in the Boy Scouts of America and served as a Scout leader for a 
number of years.  He worked as a security guard at Auburn Bank.  Mr. Smith was a 
member of the First United Methodist Church of Opelika and was also known for his 
interest in people, birds, nature and classical music.
   He is survived by his wife, Judith Johnson Smith of Opelika; a brother, Wayne Smith of 
Roanoke; three nephews, including Bill Smith of Roanoke; his mother-in-law; three 
brothers-in-law; three nieces; and a great-niece.
   The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and suggests that memorial donations 
may be directed to Boy Scouts of America (1710 Buena Vista Rd., Columbus, GA 31906) 
or Achievement Center (510 W. Thompson Lane, Opelika, AL 36801).

   (EASTABOGA) Services for Raymond L. Petty, 67, of Eastaboga were Saturday, 
Feb. 15, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford with Rev. Jason 
Grissom officiating.  Burial was in Eastaboga Baptist Church Cemetery with Miller 
Funeral Home in charge.
   Mr. Petty died Wednesday, Feb. 12, at home.
   Survivors include five sisters, Martha Silas of Eastaboga, Linda Alexander of Ohatchee, 
Shirley Alexander of Blue Mountain, Betty Wise of Phenix City and Mildred Hudgins of 
Fort Payne; and two brothers, Riley Petty of Wedowee and Donald Petty of Phenix City.
   Pallbearers were Gene Hester, Robert Ford, Earnest Hale, Tim Hurtado, J. C. Fowler 
and Roger Alexander.
   Mr. Petty was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Jesse and Lula Mae Petty; two brothers, Robert Petty and Oneal Petty; and a 
sister, Billye Johnson.

Mary Emma Slay Hawthorne

   (CHICAGO) Mary Emma Slay Hawthorne, 80, of Chicago, formerly of Roanoke, 
died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Bethasmy Hospital in Chicago.
   Survivors include a brother, William "Bill" Slay of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Eva 
Slay of Roanoke; a nephew, Randolph Slay of Savannah, Ga.; a great-nephew, three 
great-great-nephews, five great-nieces, one great-great-niece and other loving relatives 
and friends.  Mrs. Hawthorne was preceded in death by her father, William McKinley 
"Wiley" Slay; her mother, Mrs. Adella Slay; and a sister, Mrs. Rosella Slay Marable.
   Services for Mrs. Hawthorne were Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Rehope Baptist 
Church, LaFayette, with Pastor George L. Silmon officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.

   Mrs. Levens died Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Regional Medical Center.

Holder, all of Anniston, Kathy L. Couey and Debbie Dotson, both of Weaver, and Sherry 
Lynch of Wellington; a son, Donald Levens of Anniston; four sisters, Vestula Woods of 
South Haven, Miss., Janie Doyle of Memphis, Tenn., Shirley Stevens of Bryant and Betty 
Christopher of Anniston; a brother, Jimmy G. Clark of Ohatchee; 19 grandchildren, and a 
number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Michael Shane Levens, Chris Smith, Buddy Couey, Sonny Mayne, 
Brett Levens and Derrick Dotson.
   Mrs. Levens, a Randolph county native, had been a Calhoun County resident most of 
her life.  She was a Baptist and a homemaker.

Hazel Jean Powers

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Hazel Jean Powers, 48, of Roanoke were 
Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens with the Rev. Kenneth 
Griffith and Rev. Thomas Boyd officiating.
   Mrs. Powers died suddenly on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, Mrs. Powers was born April 9, 1954, 
daughter of Joe William and Winnie Mae Noles Boyd.  She was a member of High Pine 
Baptist Church and had been employed with Palm Beach Company.
   Survivors include her husband, Hugh Powers of Roanoke; one brother, James Boyd of 
Roanoke; a nephew, Danny Boyd, of Roanoke; and two great-nieces.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial to Hugh.

Mr. Sheryl Stone

   (LANETT) Mr. Sheryl Stone, 45, of Lanett died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at his 
residence.
   Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral 
Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. David Johnson officiating.  Burial followed in 
Resthaven Cemetery.
   Mr. Stone is survived by his wife, Karen Aaron Stone; two brothers, Roderick Stone of 
Lanett and Teryl Stone of Wadley; three nieces and two nephews.
   Born Aug. 18, 1957, in Langdale, Mr. Stone was a lifelong resident of the Valley area.  
He was the owner and operator of Chuck's BBQ Restaurant in Valley and the Chicken 
Stop restaurants in Huguley and Lanett.  He had served as a member of the Huguley 
Water Board and as an advisor for Phi Theta Kappa Alumni at Southern Union.  Mr. 
Stone was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  He was the son of the late Bodine Blair 
Stone and Prentis Stone.

   Mrs. Richardson died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Heard County, Ga., native, Mrs. Richardson was born May 18, 1918, daughter of Joe 
and Ella Wilson Huddleston.  She had been employed by Palm Beach Company.   Mrs. 
Richardson was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Lee Richardson.
   Survivors include two daughters, Oleta Clark of Steele and Susan Richardson of New 
York City; two sons, Ralph Richardson of Roanoke and Joe "Buddy" Richardson of 
Lanett; one sister, Eddie Akery of Bowdon, Ga.; and one brother, Lloyd Huddleston of 
Biloxi, Miss.

Harvey 'Buddy' Moore

   (ROANOKE) Harvey "Buddy" Moore, 69, of Roanoke, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, 
at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Mr. Moore, born May 19, 1933, in Troup County, Ga., was the son of the late Harvey 
Leonard and Louise Page Moore.  He retired from Moore Oxygen Supply in Carrollton, 
Ga., was formerly employed with the Georgia State Patrol and was a member of Hillcrest 
United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include a brother, Jim L. Moore of LaGrange, Ga.; two nephews, Keith 
Moore of LaGrange and Chad Moore of Bowdon, Ga.; and a devoted stepmother, Juanita 
Crews.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard C. Moore.
   Cryptside services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Shadowlawn Mausoleum in 
LaGrange with the Rev. Frank Sledge officiating.

Mary Richardson

   (BREMEN, Ga.) Services for Mary Richardson, 67, of Bremen, Ga., formerly of 
Wedowee, were Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Ava United Methodist Church, with 
the Rev. Warren Wilder and the Rev. Mike Samuels officiating.  Burial was in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Richardson died Friday, Feb. 14, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
   Mrs. Richardson was a native of Randolph County, born June 24, 1935, daughter of 
Arnie McCombs and Adelle McManus McCombs.  She was retired from the Randolph 
County Board of Education and was a member of Ava United Methodist Church.
   Mrs. Richardson is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Rudd Cummings of 
Bremen, a sister, Louise Kirby of Wedowee; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Neil Laney, Scott Fowler, Merl Brown, Tommy Messer, Chris Messer 
and Ricky Daniel.

Morgan Blake Edmondson

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Morgan Blake Edmondson, 71, of Franklin, Ga., died Sunday, 
Feb. 23, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mr. Edmondson, born Jan. 28, 1932, in Roanoke, Ala., was the son of the late Gus and 
Zona Bell Prescott Edmondson.  He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, retired 
from West Georgia RESA and worked for Edmondson TV and Radio for 20 years.  He 
was a member of Franklin Road Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Lula Edmondson of Franklin; two sons, David Edmondson of 
LaGrange and Tony Edmondson of Franklin; a sister, Maybelle Massey of the Louise 
community; a granddaughter; two step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  He 
was preceded in death by six brothers, O. C. Edmondson, Arthur Edmondson, Huey 
Edmondson, Charles Edmondson, Gaines Edmondson and Eugene Edmondson; and a 
sister, Macy Gleaton.
   Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Franklin Road Baptist Church with the 
Revs. Bob Burnett and Frank Sledge officiating.  Burial will be in Meadoway Gardens.
   Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to the Franklin Road Baptist 
Church Building Fund for Mr. Edmondson.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Helen Loretta Davis, 70, of Wedowee, will be Wednesday, 
Feb. 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Pastor Bob Kurts 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Rosehaven Cemetery, Douglasville, Ga.
   Mrs. Davis died Saturday, Feb. 22, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A Pikeville, Ky., native, Mrs. Davis was born Oct. 3, 1932, daughter of Reul and Ellen 
Reed Lockhart.  She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lineville and 
had worked as a waitress.
   Survivors include her husband, Mack Davis of Wedowee; three sisters, Lorraine Behring 
of Missouri, Ruby Childers of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Inez Thompson of Pikeville, Ky.; 
one brother, Stacey Lockhart of Pikeville; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Christine Williams

   (VALLEY) Helen Christine Williams, 85, of Valley died Thursday evening, 
Feb. 20, 2003, at her residence.
   Graveside services were Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Fairfax Cemetery with the 
Rev. Danny Spear officiating.
   Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughter, Dr. Sharon W. Self of Columbus, Ga.; her 
son, Coleman Williams of Lanett; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Born Oct. 13, 1917, in Randolph County, Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and the last 
of 12 brothers and sisters.  She lived her long life as a devoted wife, loving mother and 
caring sister, neighbor and friend.  Mrs. Williams was a very active member of Fairfax 
First Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible school.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, W. Murray Williams.  She was the daughter of the 
late Sara Holder Weathers and Luther Coleman Weathers.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the H. Grady Bradshaw Public Library, 
3419 20th Ave., Valley, AL 36854 in her memory.

Chuck Banzhof

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Chuck Banzhof, 48, of Wedowee, formerly of Lancaster,

Cemetery.
   Mr. Banzhof died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 20, at DCH Regional Medical Center in 
Tuscaloosa.
   A Pennsylvania native, Mr. Banzhof was born Aug. 10, 1954, son of David and Marie 
Gross Banzhof.  He served in the Navy, was a Vietnam War veteran and a member of First 
Baptist Church of Wedowee.  He had been a crew superintendent with V.G. Scott Inc.
   Survivors include his wife, Edie Messick Banzhof of Wedowee; three daughters, 
Brittany Banzhof of Wedowee, Mellisa Babcock of Gordonsville, Tenn., and Hope 
Mulvimill of Fort Worth, Texas; a step-daughter, Kathy Gilbert of Willmington, Mass.; 
four sisters, Dawn Kreider of Daytona, Fla., Carol Wadgner and Dorothy Banzhof of 
Tampa, Fla., and Barbara Shue of Litiz, Pa.; five brothers, John Banzhof and Kenneth

   Mr. Albritton died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 20, in Savannah, Ga.
   A native of Wachula, Fla., Mr. Albritton was born Nov. 26, 1939.  He was a retired 
deputy fire chief in St. Lucie County, Ft. Pierce, Fla.
   Survivors include a special friend, Connie Huey of Woodland; two sons, David Albritton 
of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Michael Albritton of Hinesville, Ga.; three grandchildren; a 
sister, Maxine Barker of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and two brothers, Harry Albritton and Earl

Marlin Rice Tidwell

   (TALLAHASSE[E], Fla.) Marlin Rice Tidwell, 66, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Monday, 
Feb. 17, 2003, in Tallahassee.
   Services were Thursday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. at Abbey Chapel in Tallahassee.  Burial was 
in Tallahassee Memory Gardens with full Masonic rites at the graveside by Robert Butler 
Lodge #305.
   Mr. Tidwell was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from 1959 until his retirement in 
1992.  He was a member of the Baptist faith.  He served in the U.S. Navy and Army 
Reserve, was a member of Robert Butler Lodge and a Shriner.
   Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Alice P. Tidwell of Tall[a]hassee; two sons, Gregory 
Tidwell and Joseph "Joedy" Tidwell of Tallahasse[e]; four grandchildren; a brother, 
Melvin Tidwell of Roanoke; two sisters, Maudine White of Opelika and Melda Jordan 
of Tallahassee; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Harvey W. Hallman, 82, of Roanoke were held Friday,

   Mr. Hallman died Wednesday, Feb. 19, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   A native of Randolph County, Mr. Hallman was born March 6, 1920, son of Hansford 
Lindsey and Nora Ray Hallman.  He had been employed as a textile mechanic with 
Handley Mills.  He was a member of Woodman of the World for more than 60 years 
and was one of the first members of Roanoke Quarterback Club.
   Survivors include his wife, Lonita "Mutt" Cottle Hallman; one daughter, Penny 
Bradshaw of Roanoke; one sister, Mary Rogers of LaGrange, Ga.; two grandchildren 
and two great-grandchildren.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Audrey Y. Janney, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, Feb. 18,

   Mrs. Janney was born on July 13, 1913, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Jim 
and Ollie Lewis Young.  She lived in LaGrange most of her life and retired in 1972 from 
the Hillside Plant of Callaway Mills.  She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
   Services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, 
LaGrange, with the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   Survivors include two daughters, Annette Thomas of Whitesburg, Ga., and Linda J. 
Smith of LaGrange; one son, William Arnold Janney of Five Points; one sister, Bertha 
Huey of Tallassee; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild 
and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T.

   (MUNFORD) Services for Essie Mae Duke, 78, of Munford were Thursday, Feb. 20,

and David Lipscomb officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Delta with Dryden 
Funeral Home in charge.
   Mrs. Duke died Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.
   Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Turner of Oxford and Bonita Ferguson of 
Munford; three sons, Edward Duke and Robby Duke of Munford and Jerry Duke of 
Jacksonville; two sisters, Clessie Paris of Eastaboga and Vera Watts of Wedowee; and 
a brother, Eugene Shephard of West Point, Ga.
   Pallbearers were Chad Duke, Shawn Taylor Joshua Duke, Corey Duke, Tony Hulsey 
and Larry Braswell.
   Mrs. Duke, a Blount County native, lived in Wedowee for many years before moving to 
Munford.  She was a member of Munford Church of God and retired from CrownTuft 
Manufacturing in Heflin as a seamstress.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Rubin Duke.

Jasper C. 'Jack' Brown

   (GREAT FALLS, Mont.) Retired Air Forec Lt. Col. Jasper C. "Jack" Brown, 77, of 
Great Falls, Mont., died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at the Montana Veterans Home in 
Columbia Falls, of natural causes.
   His memorial service was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at O'Connor Memorial Chapel in 
Great Fal[l]s.
   Survivors include his wife, Mercedes Brown of Great Falls; daughters, Myra Brown of 
San Diego, Phyllis Brown of New York City, and Carol Radina of Glendale, Ariz.; a son, 
Rich Brown of Ulm, Mont.; sisters, Beatrice Daniel, Peggy Eidson and Mona Herren, all 
of Woodland, Ala.; brothers, Charles Brown of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Carey Brown of 
Swansea, S.C., Daniel Brown of Graham and Paul Brown of Woodland; and five 
grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Opal Brown, and brothers, 
J. Q. Brown, Cecil Brown and Buford Brown.
   Mr. Brown was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Goodwater, Ala., and raised in Randolph 
County.  He graduated from Woodland High School and earned a degree in electrical 
engineering from Auburn University.  He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and 
served in a flight crew as a radioman in World War II.  He attended Army ROTC while at 
Auburn University, then joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950, and graduated cadet in the 
class of 1951.  He piloted numerous bomber and fighter jets, flew 47 combat missions in 
an F-105D in the Vietnam conflict, and retired from active duty in 1970.  He enjoyed 
gardening, archery, hunting, fishing, his grandchildren and sports - particularly college 
football and NASCAR.

John Michael Huckeba Jr.

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Michael Huckeba Jr., 18, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Horace Harper and the Rev. Michael Brown officiating.  Burial will follow at 
Wehadkee Cemetery.
   Mr. Huckeba died suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, he was born Sept. 3, 1984.  He attended Rock 
Mills Community Holiness Church and worked as a welder at Plantation Patterns.
   Survivors include his mother, Nancy Carol Huckeba of Roanoke; his father, John 
Michael Huckeba Sr. of Seattle; his grandparents, Monroe and Jennell Glass of Roanoke, 
Gerda Huckeba of Washington and the Rev. Noris Huckeba of Somerville, Texas; a sister, 
Sylvia Huckeba of Roanoke; his stepfather, Randy Weathers of Roanoke; a stepsister, 
Kayla Weathers of Rock Mills; a stepbrother, Jesse Weathers of Rock Mills; and a niece.
   Pallbearers will be Neil Glass, Dewayne Garrett, Eddie Akins, Beau Rollins, Junior 
Bishop, Roy Glass, Chris Taylor and Chris Jackson.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.
