OBITUARIES:

Cleveland M. Herren

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Cleveland M. Herren, 68, of Old Airport Road, Carrollton, 
Ga., died Friday, April 28, 2006.
   Mr. Herren was born March 24, 1938, in Randolph County to the late Leonia Dye 
Herren and the late Garfield Herren. He was a U.S. Army veteran, worked for 
Printed Fabrics for more than 50 years, and was a member of Herren Grove Baptist 
Church in Woodland. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, 
Griffin Herren; and sisters Ellen Webb and Wyomia Ledbetter.
   Survivors include his wife, Marie Phillips Herren; a son, Michael Herren of 
the Clem community; a daughter, Donna Ragsdale of Carrollton; four sisters, 
Shirley Keaton and Florence Kittle of Carrollton, Barbara Braswell of Waco, Ga., 
and Mary Jane Martin of Wedowee; and six grandchildren.
   Services were Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at Martin & Hightower Heritage 
Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Ledbetter and Mr. Harold Massengale officiating. 
Pallbearers were Chris Ledbetter, Rob Kittle, Randy Kittle, Jerry Smith, Joey 
Huckeba and Ricky Morrow. Interment was in Carroll Memory Gardens. The flag was 
presented by American Legion Post #143.

George Taylor Kirby

   (ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) Services for George Taylor Kirby, 73, of Altamonte 
Springs, Fla.; formerly of Randolph County, were Saturday, April 29, 2006, at 10 
a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel With the Rev. Gary Henderson officiating. 
Burial followed at White's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Kirby died Tuesday, April 25, at Florida Hospital.
   Survivors include his wife, Anne Davidson Kirby of Altamonte Springs; one 
daughter, Roxanne Steed of Waterford, Conn.; one son, George Allan Kirby of 
Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Eulette Ward of Roanoke and 
Julia Moree of Alexandria; and one brother, Jimmy Kirby of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were John Williams, Frank Hodges, Jonathan Caldwell, Tim Kirby, 
Marvin Kirby and Bill Ward.
   Mr. Kirby was born Nov. 21, 1932, son of H. Waites and Mattie Lou Taylor 
Kirby. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, had for the U.S. 
Government as an electrical engineer supervisor for 36 years and served in the 
army during the Korean War. Mr. Kirby was preceded in death by his parents. 
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the charity of choice.

John Chief Benefield

   (ROANOKE) Services for Johh [John] Chief Benefield, 85, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Roger Jones and the Rev. Hugh Vines officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Mr. Benefield died Saturday, April 29, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   Survivors include his wife, Jappie Frances Whitley Benefield of Roanoke; and 
one sister, Minnie Lee Tarver of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers will be Thomas Perry, Benny Woody, Larry Woody, S.A. Kidd, 
Darrell Harmon, David Harmon, David Whitley and Steve Ray.
   Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Cato, Thomas Caldwell and Gaines Simpson.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Benefield was born on Oct. 1, 1920, son of John 
David and Elsie Pool Benefield. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of 
Lebanon Christian Church, and had been employed as an instructor at Opelika 
Tech.

Lula Mae Raven

   (ANNISTON) Services for Lula Mae Raven, 79, of Anniston will be 11 a.m. 
Friday, April 28, 2006, at Anniston Funeral Services with the Rev. Edward Scott 
officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery. The body will lie in state 
at the chapel until time of service.
   Ms. Raven died Wednesday, April 26, at Beckwood Manor in Anniston.
   She is survived by one son, David Tate of Anniston; and a niece, Laverne 
Raven of Stone Mountain, Ga.
   Ms. Raven was a lifelong resident of Randolph County and a member of Union 
Hill Baptist Church in Woodland.

Louise G. Staples

   (ROANOKE) Louise G. Staples, 79, of 1311 Satterwhite Street, Roanoke, died 
Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services were Tuesday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Peace and Goodwill Baptist 
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Lonnie B. Houston officiating. Burial was in the 
church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, Wyatt Staples III of Roanoke and Jerry Staples of 
Canton, Ga.; one granddaughter; one grandson; and several special cousins. She 
was preceded in death by a brother, John Gates.

Joe Lewis Zachery

   (FIVE POINTS) Joe Lewis Zachary, 58, of Five Points died Thursday, May 4, 
2006, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Services will be Wednesday, May 10, at 1 p.m. at Sweet Home Baptist Church, 
Five Points, with the Rev. L.B. Houston, officiating. Interment will be in the 
church cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church one hour before the 
service.
   Surviving are his mother, Maurine Carlisle Jackson of Five Points; four 
sisters, Phyllis B. Clark and Gwendolyn Barton of Atlanta, Carolyn Barton Allen 
of Five Points and Harolyn B.. McGuire of Roanoke; four nieces; four nephews; 
one aunt; one great-nephew; two uncles; two great-aunts; a host of cousins other 
relatives and friends.
   Mr. Zachary was born Oct. 16, 1947, in Chambers County. He was a 1965 
graduate of Phillips High School, Five Points, and later attended Alabama State 
University, Montgomery. Mr. Zachary was a retired veteran of the U.S. Marine 
Corps. He served honorably in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart Medal. On 
returning home from service, he worked for several employers, including the U.S. 
Postal Service, Atlanta. Mr. Zachary was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church, 
Five Points.

Jessie Bean Gabriel

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Jessie Bean Gabriel, 88, of Wedowee were Tuesday, May 
9, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Bethel West Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Holcombe 
and the Rev. Phillip Waits officiating. Burial followed in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Gabriel died Sunday, May 7, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Gabriel is survived by two daughters, Deborah A. Gabriel of Wedowee and 
Denita Beth Gabriel of Atlanta; one son, Thomas O. Gabriel Jr. of Wedowee; one 
sister, Rubia Bean of Talladega and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Southern Ambulance Transport employees and members of 
Foster's Crossroads Fire Department.
   Mrs. Gabriel was born March 23, 1918, daughter of Wilson J. and Sarah E. 
Heard Bean. She was a member of Bethel West Baptist Church and lunchroom manager 
for Randolph County Schools. Mrs. Gabriel was preceded in death by her husband, 
Thomas Gabriel Sr.

Danny Wayne Cunningham Heard

   (ROANOKE) Services for Danny Wayne Cunningham Heard, 30, of Roanoke were 
Monday, May 8, 2006, at 4 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Keith Benefield and the Rev. Earl Rollins officiating. Burial followed at Old 
Springfield Cemetery.
   Mr. Heard died Friday, May 5.
   Survivors include one son, Logan Chase Heard of Roanoke, his mother, Pat 
Brown Heard of Roanoke; his father, C.E. Cunningham of Roanoke; and grandmothers 
Annie Cunningham and Myrtle Heard of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Kevin Watson, Brian Bevels, Benji Brown, Daniel Brown, 
Nathan Sikes, Mike Brewer, Clint Morgan and Bobby Oarda.
   Mr. Heard was born Sept. 12, 1975, son of Pat Brown Heard and C.E. 
Cunningham. He was a member of Midway Full Gospel Church and was employed as a 
welder at Wellborn Cabinet Inc.

Brenda Faye Olson

   (ROANOKE) Brenda Faye Olson, 49, of Roanoke died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at 
South Hampton Nursing in Owens Crossroads.
   She is survived by her mother, Magdalene Rollins Olson of Roanoke; three 
sisters, Linda Bevel of Guntersville and Kathy Knight and Teresa Olson of 
Roanoke; a brother, Patrick Olson of LaGrange, Ga.; and several nieces and 
nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Duane Olson; and a 
brother, Michael Duane Olson.

Mary Kate Prescott Beddingfield, 102

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Kate Beddingfield, 102, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, 
May 6, 2006, at the Florence Hand Home in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Beddingfield was born Nov. 15, 1903, in Woodland, daughter of the late 
Benjamin and Frances S. Prescott. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and 
was a member of East Vernon Baptist Church. Mrs. Beddingfield was retired from 
Callaway Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. 
Beddingfield, and two sons, Gladston and Bill Beddingfield.
   Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Magnan of Macon, Ga.; three 
grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
   Services were Monday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange 
Chapel, with the Rev. Don Ellison officiating. Burial was in Shadowlawn 
Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity in memory of 
Mrs. Beddingfield.

   (WADLEY) Garon "Pate" Hunter, 84, of Wadley died Friday, May 5, 2006, at Clay 
County Nursing Home, Lineville.
   Services will be Wednesday, May 10, at 1 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Tim Heard and the Rev. William Trammell officiating. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include his mother, Zula Battle of Wadley; a sister, Lillie McLain 
of Wadley; four brothers, Bobby Battle of Cincinnati, Ohio, James Hunter and 
Donald Battle of Dayton, Ohio, and James Battle of Wadley; and a special, 
friend, Jackie Wyckoff of Wadley. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy 
Battle.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Earl Stilwell

   (VALLEY) Earl Stilwell, 86, of Valley died Friday, May 5, 2006, at Traylor 
Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   Mr. Stilwell was born in Five Points on Oct. 26, 1919. He was a self-employed 
carpenter and served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. He was a member of 
Shawmut Methodist Church.
   Mr. Stilwell is survived by two daughters, Linda Peck of LaGrange, Ga., and 
Peggy Haralson of Evans, Colo.; and one grandson.
   Services were at 1 p.m. EDT on Monday, May 8, at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley, with the Rev. Larry Horne and the Rev. Phillip 
Bone officiating. Burial was in Shawmut Cemetery.

William Earnest Patterson

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for William Earnest Patterson, 86, of Woodland 
were Sunday, May 7, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Bethel East Baptist Church with the Rev. 
Norris Lane and the Rev. Tony Morris officiating.  Burial followed at the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Patterson died Friday, May 5, at Columbus Hospice House.
   Mr. Patterson is survived by two sons, Kermit and Max Patterson of Ranburne; 
one sister, Katherine McCullough of Anniston; two grandchildren; one great-
grandchild and two nephews.
   Pallbearers were Tim McCollough, Phillip McCollough, Tim Harrington, Tracey 
Eason, Terry Eason and Frank Campbell.
   Mr. Patterson was born April 1, 1920, the son of Monroe and Mattie Wright 
Patterson. He was a member of Bethel East Baptist Church and had worked in the 
shipping department of Trintex Corporation of Bowdon, Ga. Mr. Patterson was 
preceded in death by his wife, Esther Parmer Patterson.

Bradley Allen Mitchum

   (NEWNAN, Ga.) Bradley Allen Mitchum, 26, of Newnan, Ga., formerly of 
Carrollton, Ga., died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Atlanta Medical Center.
   He was born July 28, 1979, in Opelika.
   He is survived by his father, William Allen Mitchum of Peachtree City, Ga.; 
his mother, Linda Pratt Mitchum of Carrollton; his sisters, Jody Parmer of 
Roanoke and Molly Higgins of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; his grandmothers, Janie 
Mitchum Staples of Roanoke and Ruth Hager of Newnan; one niece; two nephews; and 
an uncle.
   Services were in the McKoon Chapel Sunday, May 7, at 2:30 p.m. EDT with the 
Rev. Steve Martin, Rev. Hank Rast and Rev. Mantle Nance officiating.  Burial was 
in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.

Lucille Rooks Blanton

   (HEFLIN) Lucille Rooks Blanton, 89, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at her home.
   Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where 
she had been a member for 72 years, since August 1934.   The Revs. Donald 
Triplett, Jimmy Wright, Charles Alexander and Chris Jackson officiated.
   She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, John Duncan 
Blanton Jr.; a daughter, Jenell Blanton; a son, Harold Glenn Blanton; a 
granddaughter, Johnnie Deanne Blanton; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Forney Rooks; also 
three brothers and two sisters.
   Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Perkins of Heflin; and three sons, 
Johnny Blanton of Dallas, Ga., Harry Blanton of Wedowee and Wally Blanton of 
Calera; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-
grandchildren; a sister, Betty R. Hayes; two brothers, David Rooks and Frank 
Rooks, all of Heflin.
   Pallbearers were grandsons: Scott Blanton, Will Blanton, Shane Blanton, Andy 
Blanton, Tim Perkins, Greg Perkins, Drayton Perkins, Hunter Perkins, Jeremy 
Allen, Josh Allen, Shannon Allen, Jason White, Bobby Meadows and Paul Gonterman. 
Honorary pallbearers were the Revs. Kenneth Howle, Doug Prestridge, W.E. Jones

   (ROANOKE) Services for Andrew Watts, 83, of Roanoke, were Saturday, May 6,

   Mr. Watts died Tuesday, May 2, at Clay County Nursing Home, Lineville.
   Survivors include four sons, Jerome Watts of Roanoke, Raymond Watts and Jerry 
Watts of Atlanta and Roy Watts of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter, Virginia 
Small of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother, Charlie Watts of Cleveland; fifteen 
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a 
daughter, Dorothy Watts; and two brothers, William Watts and Robert Watts.

   (ROANOKE) William S. Houston, 62, of Roanoke died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at 
his residence.
   Services were Friday, May 5, at 1 p.m. at Zion Rest Baptist Church, Wedowee, 
with the Rev. Williams Phillips, pastor, officiating and elder John C. 
Greathouse giving a eulogy. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Josephine Houston of Roanoke; his mother, Mae Tom 
Williams of Wedowee; a daughter, Dawn Houston of Roanoke; three sons, William S. 
Houston Jr., Alan Houston and Jonathan Houston, all of Roanoke; six sisters, 
Ethel Houston of Anniston, Tressie Ware of Roanoke, Joann Stone, Beverly Bailey 
and Linda Lawson of Wedowee and Alice Berry of Phenix City; a brother, James 
Houston of Birmingham; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two 
brothers, Leon and Martin Houston.

   (SYCAMORE, Ga.) Services for Alice Simpson Watkins, 75, of Sycamore, Ga., 
formerly of Randolph County, were Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Bethel 
West Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Burial followed in 
the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Watkins died Thursday, May 4, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Watkins is survived by five daughters, Glenda Hill and Donna Cosper of 
Newell, Betty Clayton of Sycamore, Shelia Clifton of Woodland and Elaine Sewell 
of Heflin; one son, Jimmy Watkins of Sycamore; two sisters, Jessie B. Brown of 
Arab and Joyce Simpson of Talladega; three brothers, Hubert Simpson of Wedowee, 
Jerald Simpson of Ranburne and Lonnie Simpson of Mobile; eleven grandchildren 
and nine great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tim Clifton, Tim Lovvorn, Shannon Richardson, John Morgan, 
Jason Reaves and Martin Champion. Honorary pallbearers were Adam Clifton, A.J. 
Sewell and Jason Sewell.
  Mrs. Watkins was born April 24, 1931, the daughter of Robert D. and Mamer 
Williams Simpson. She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She was preceded 
in death by two sons, Buddy and Ray Dunn.

   (LaFAYETTE) Maxie Whitlow, 69, of LaFayette died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at 
LaFayette Extended Care in LaFayette.
   Funeral services were Friday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Baptist Church in 
LaFayette with the Revs. Justin Freeman and Sanders Higgins officiating. Burial 
followed at Standing Rock Cemetery.
   Mr. Whitlow is survived by his wife, Mattie Whitlow of LaFayette; six 
daughters, Pearlie Mae Walker, Mattie Whitlow, Mary Whitlow, Maxine Whitlow, 
Janice Hunter and Kelly Whitlow, all of LaFayette; two sons, James Whitlow and 
Jonathan Whitlow, both of LaFayette; three sisters, Ruby Stegall and Mary F. 
Ballard, both of Roanoke, and Mae R. Greer of LaFayette; three brothers, William 
L. Whitlow and Marvin L. Whitlow, both of Atlanta, and Charles A. Whitlow of 
LaFayette; 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Whitlow was born May 7, 1936, in Chambers County.

Sara Pauline McCormick

   (ROANOKE) Services for Sara Pauline McCormick, 84, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
May 16, 2006, at 2 p.m. at House of Prayer, with the Rev. Margie Boggs and the 
Rev. Carol Royster officiating. Burial followed at Big Springs Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. McCormick died Saturday, May 13, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Mitchell of Roanoke; two step-
daughters, Grace Ruggs and Laura Phillips of Forrest, Miss.; three sons, Sonny 
McCormick and Glover McCormick of Wadley and James McCormick of Franklin, Ga.; 
three step-sons, Charlie McCormick and Earl McCormick of LaGrange, Ga., and 
Billy McCormick of Longview, Texas; 18 grandchildren and several great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Sonny McCormick, Jeremy McCormick, Sandra McCormick, David 
Gunn, Chris Gunn and Chris Bailey.
   Mrs. McCormick was born Dec. 12, 1921, daughter of Paul and Dollie Jenkins 
Smith. She was of the holiness faith and had been a textile spinner for Dunson 
Mills. Mrs. McCormick was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Sandra 
Jennings; and one grandson, Kevin Mitchell.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Norma Lee Clark, 79, of Roanoke were Friday, May 12,

   Mrs. Clark died Wednesday, May 10, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include one daughter, Wanda Dorothy Clark of Roanoke; one sister, 
Lavada Fetner of Blakely, Ga.; and four brothers, E.C. Bennett of Amarillo, 
Texas, W.R. Bennett and Bob Bennett of Wadley and Larkin Bennett of New 
Ellenton, S.C.  Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Bee 
Clark; two children, Sandra Jeanette Clark and Phillip Clark; one brother, 
Gordon Bennett; and two sisters, Clovine Lacy and Amber Parrish.
   Pallbearers were Larkin Bennett, W.B. Bennett, Bob Bennett, Heflin Carden, 
Mike Bennett and Timothy Bennett.
   Mrs. Clark was born Nov. 19, 1926, daughter of A.J. and Della Kellum Bennett. 
She was a member of Rock Springs Christian Church and had been a housewife.
   Flowers will be accepted or donations made to the American Cancer Society.

Saturday, May 13, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.

   Mrs. Henderson died Tuesday, May 9, at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital, 
Anniston.
   Mrs. Henderson is survived by two daughters, Karen Tevy of Houston, Texas, 
and Cheri Perry of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; three sons, Johnny Koehler of Heflin and 
Larry Koehler and Terry Henderson of Anniston; one sister, Peggy Cox of 
LaFayette, La.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jamie Perry, Tommy Harkey, Michael Spears, Felix Ixmay-chun, 
Jimmy Henderson, Tony Laymon and Chris Reeves.
   Mrs. Henderson was born Dec. 15, 1930, daughter of Walter and Johnnie 
Elizabeth Bond Tanksley. She had been a homemaker. Mrs. Henderson was preceded 
in death by her husband, Robert Henderson; two children, Jacqueline Harkey and 
Sharon Henderson; and one brother, Walter Tanksley Jr.

   (DECATUR, Ga.) Allen Culbertson, 68, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at Odyssey 
Health Care in Decatur, Ga.
   Services will be Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Revs. William Phillips, Jeffery Rosser, J.D. Darden and Joe 
Cofield officiating. Interment will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church 
Cemetery in the Bacon Level community.
   Mr. Culberson is survived by a daughter, Millie Williams of Roanoke; five 
sons, John Culberson of Lithonia, Ga., James Culberson of Frankfurt, Germany, 
Dennis Culberson of Roanoke, and Danny Culberson and Ronnie Culberson of 
Goodwater; a sister, Annie Maclntosh of Elyria, Ohio; two brothers, Earnest 
Cofield of Elyria, Ohio, and Willie Cofield of Cleveland, Ohio; 14 
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Roanoke Funeral Home on 
Friday from noon until 6 p.m.
   Mrs. Culberson was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Culberson; and two 
sons, Walter and Gregory Culberson.

   Mrs. Priest died Thursday, May 11, at Traylor Nursing Home.

   Mrs. Priest was born Aug. 29, 1930, daughter of Harper and Ethel Miller Holt. 
She was of the Methodist faith and had worked as a model. Priest was preceded in 
death by her husband, Parker Allen Priest.

  (ANNISTON) Services for Cornelia Godwin, 82, of Anniston were Monday, May 15, 
2006, at 1 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church in Bynum with the Rev. Nathaniel 
McRath officiating. Burial was in Chulafinnee Cemetery in Chulafinnee with 
Anniston Funeral Service in charge.
   Mrs. Godwin died on May 10, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include one daughter, Emma Jean Godwin McBride; two sons, Billy Ray 
Godwin and Travis Edward Godwin of Bynum; two sisters, Alberta Brooks of 
Anniston and Clara Boykin of Newell; five grandchildren; two great-
grandchildren; and two aunts.

   Mrs. Godwin was a life long resident and a member of the Springhill Baptist 
Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Veronica Brown; her

Rudy Parmer

   (LaGRANGE, Ga.) Rudy Parmer, 96, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, May 10, 
2006, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mr. Parmer was born Dec. 20, 1909, in Randolph County, son of the late James 
William Parmer and Josephine Gosdin Parmer. He had lived in LaGrange most of his 
life and was Baptist by faith. Mr. Parmer was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in 
World War II and was a farmer before retiring. Mr. Parmer was preceded in death 
by a son, Roger K. Parmer.
   Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Laverne White Parmer of LaGrange; two 
daughters, Lamerle Kelley and Faye Caldwell of LaGrange; one son, Winford Parmer 
of LaGrange; one brother, William P. Parmer of West Point, Ga.; one sister, 
Jewel Hill of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 12 
great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Services were at 2 p.m. EDT Friday, May 12, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 
LaGrange Chapel, with the Rev. Lamar Womack and the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt

   Mr. Mize died Thursday in Pell City.

by his wife, Florence E. Mize; two brothers, Jim Mize and Harvey Mize; and three 
sisters, Nettie Sellers, Artie Sellers and Stella Moore.
   Mr. Mize was a native of Randolph County.  He was the oldest living member of 
Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church and Folsom Senior Citizen Center.

church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mrs. Wood died Sunday, May 21, at Princeton Baptist Hospital.
   Survivors include one daughter, Linda and husband Dr. David Cain of Jasper; 
three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Hughley and Shameica Childs, both of LaGrange, Ga.; four brothers, Jacoby Allen, 
Shaquille Allen, Justin Allen and Marquiz Dozier, all of Roanoke; their 
grandparents, Hattie Clark, Linda and Eudoris Patterson Jr. of Roanoke and 
Anthony Leon and Trisha Nunn Sr. of Carrollton, Ga.; and a host of other family 
members who loved Keyshawn and Delavontae very much.
   Keyshawn Lee Allen was born Sept. 20, 1998, in Valley. He was a member of New 
Harmony Baptist Church in LaFayette, where he was an active member of the youth 
choir. He had just completed the first grade at Knight-Enloe Elementary School 
in Roanoke.
   Delavontae Jakeem Allen was born June 29, 2003, in Roanoke. He was also a 
member of New Harmony Baptist Church in LaFayette.
   Both brothers were noted for being friendly and loving and always having 
smiles on their faces.

   (NORTHPORT) James Thomas Baird, 80, of Northport died Thursday, May 18, 2006, 
at his home.
   Services were Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of 
Tuscaloosa. Burial was at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.  Officiating were the Revs. 
Dan Kilgore and Mark Hughes.
   Mr. Baird was born in Roanoke. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World 
War II. He retired as production control manager at Uniroyal-Goodrich. After 
retiring, he lived in Frankfurt and Illasheim, Germany, Marco Island, Fla., and 
Fairhope.
   Survivors include his wife, Katherine Mauldin Baird of Northport; three 
daughters, Nancy Baird Turner of Nashville, Tenn., Julie Baird Millen of 
Memphis, Tenn., and Amy Lucille Baird of New Orleans; a son, Jason James Baird 
of Montgomery; four sisters, Jacqueline Baird Tucker of Tuscaloosa, Joyce Baird 
Mizer of Old Saybrook, Conn., Janet Baird Holt of Leeds and Janelle Baird Couch

He was of the Baptist faith, was a self-employed Repo-man, and served the rescue 
squad as a second lieutenant. Mr. Loyd was preceded in death by his parents and 
two brothers, Steve and Alton Loyd.

Clarence Malcolm 'Mack' Stewart

   (WOODLAND) Services for Clarence Malcolm "Mack" Stewart, 81, of Woodland were 
Thursday, May 18, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Christian Church, with the Rev. 
Ed Pannell and the Rev. David Daniel officiating.  Burial followed at Goldridge 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Stewart died Tuesday, May 16, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Survivors include two daughters, Jan Stewart Tolbert of Carrollton, Ga., and 
Jill Stewart McCord of Sharpsburg, Ga.; two sons, Jeff Lovvorn Stewart and Joe 
Mack Stewart of Woodland; and their mother, Mary Lovvorn Stewart of Carrollton, 
Ga.; two sisters, Idell Simpson of Bowdon, Ga., and Mary Wilson of Oxford; three 
brothers, Byrd Stewart of Morrison's Crossroads, Neil Stewart of Bowdon and 
Bobby Stewart of Wedowee; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were his nephews.
   Mr. Stewart was born Feb. 15, 1925, son of William Newton and Mary Anna 
McLeod Stewart. He was a member of Pine Hill Christian Church, had been a 
carpenter and built numerous churches in the area, and served in the U.S. Army 
during World War II. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by one sister, Florence 
McManus; and five brothers, Roy, Horace, Ellis, Rob and Sanders Stewart. Flowers

Josephine Teague Woods

   (CARRABELLE, Fla.) Josephine Teague Woods, 81, of Carrabelle, Fla., formerly 
of Rome, Ga., died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Harbour Breeze Nursing Home in 
Carrabelle.
   Mrs. Woods was born in Randolph County on Jan. 22, 1925, daughter of the late 
Dotridge and Lura Sewell Teague. She was a graduate of Woodland High School and 
Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta. Mrs. Woods was an avid gardener 
and worked for Northwest Regional Hospital and as a supervisor at Georgia Mental 
Health Center until her retirement. Following her retirement, she was active in 
civic and garden club work.
   Survivors include her husband, Joe Barry Woods; and one sister, Floye Hand of 
Morganton, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were Thursday, May 18, at 10 a.m. at Smyrna Baptist Church, Newell, 
with the Rev. Lee Smollar officiating. Interment followed in the church 
cemetery.

Elton Rayford Murphy

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Service for Elton Rayford Murphy, 90, of Alexander City, 
were Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Radney Funeral Home. 
Bro. Brent Rice will officiate. Burial followed in Elk Grove Cemetery in 
California.
   Mr. Murphy died on Monday, May 15, at his residence.
   He was born on April 26, 1916, in Wadley to Roy M. Murphy and Minnie Harris 
Murphy. He had worked as a security watchman at a planer mill in Wyricka, 
Calif., and was an avid outdoorsman, loving to fish and hunt.  He loved to play 
baseball and gardening. He was a member of the Congregational Holiness Church of 
Oak Ridge.
   He is survived by his sons, Roy R. Murphy and Randy W. Murphy of Redding, 
Calif., Harvey L. Murphy of Elk Grove, Calif., and Tony Murphy of Susanville, 
Calif.; daughters, Clara Dunham of Alexander City, Nadene Burton of Redding, 
Lena Shimomura of Alabaster, Magalene Yelverton of La Mirada, Calif., and Sybil 
Etchison of Coalinger, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1

Timothy Dewayne Lewis

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Timothy Dewayne Lewis, 19, of Roanoke will be 
Thursday, June 1, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, Wedowee, with 
Bro. Danny Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in White's Chapel United 
Methodist Cemetery.
   Mr. Lewis died Monday, May 29.
   The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the 
funeral home.
   Mr. Lewis is survived by his father, Samuel Joe Lewis; his mother, Jeanette 
Wilson; his paternal grandfather, Skinny Lewis; his maternal grandmother, Mary 
Dutton; one sister, Amanda Dawn Lewis; one brother, Randall Casey Lewis; and one 
half-brother, Joey Lewis.

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Tom Johnson, 60, of Roanoke will be Wednesday,

   (VALLEY) Clarence Gordon Henderson, 76, of Valley died Monday, May 29, 2006, 
at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale, Ga.

the Nazarene with the Rev. Jimmy Blackmon officiating. Burial will follow at 
Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
   Mr. Henderson is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Hammock of LaGrange and 
Penny Anderson of Springville; two brothers, Charles Henderson of Lanett and Ray 
Henderson of Spokane, Wash.; his sister, Faye Henderson of Valley; a 
stepdaughter, Debbie Cleveland of Hogansville, Ga.; a stepson, Randy Johnson of 
LaGrange; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; six step-grandchildren; 
and one step-great-grandchild.
   Mr. Henderson was born April 25, 1930, in Roanoke, the son of the late Bertie 
Baldwin Henderson and C.D. Henderson. He was a veteran, having served in the 
U.S. Navy and later having 27 years of service with the National Guard. He was a 
retired employee of WestPoint Pepperell with 42 years of service. Mr. Henderson 
was a machine shop supervisor at Shawmut Mill. He enjoyed gardening, the out-
doors, motorcycles and woodworking. He was a member of Shawmut First Church of 
the Nazarene and the American Legion.

Bessie Holloway Prescott

   (HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Bessie Holloway Prescott, 92, of Hogansville, Ga., died 
Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Franklin Healthcare Center.
   Mrs. Prescott was born April 28, 1914, in Randolph County, daughter of the 
late Silas and Queen Strickland Holloway. A resident of Hogansville since 1958, 
she was a member of Midway United Methodist Church in Wedowee and was retired 
from the Dunson Division of West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Co. She was the 
wife of the late William Earl Prescott.
   Survivors include her son, William Prescott of Hogansville; a daughter, Faye 
Prescott of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; one grandson; one sister, Jessie Timek of 
Oxford; and several nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services were at 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday, May 30, at Hillview East 
Cemetery with Dr. Richard Gillespie officiating.

Mary Neal James

   (ANNISTON) Graveside services for Mary Neal James, 89, of Anniston, were

   Miss James died Friday, May 26, in Anniston.
   She is survived by one sister-in-law, Carolyn James of Birmingham; two 
nieces, Martha James Thomas of Anniston and Diana Green of Fredericksburg, 
Texas; three nephews, Harlan James of Dunwoody, Ga., John James, of Birmingham 
and Kirk James, of San Antonio, Texas; and great-nieces and nephews.
   Miss James was a native of Haleyville and resided in Anniston most of her 
life. She was a graduate of Montevallo School for Women and received her 
graduate degree at the University of Alabama. She retired from teaching school 
with 40 years of combined service including Tallahassee, Fla., Alexander City 
and the Anniston City School System, where she taught for 15 years. She served 
as a volunteer for Donoho School and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma 
Professional Organization and the First United Methodist Church of Anniston.

   Mrs. Moon leaves to cherish her memories her husband of 65 years, the Rev.

Rearden of Valley; her brother, Pete Turnham of Auburn; and many nieces and

his mother, Amelia Gayle White.

Vinson. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church and an engineer for 
the state of Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army during World War H. Mr. Vinson 
was preceded in death by his first wife, Jimmie Lee Vinson; his parents; one 
granddaughter, Stephanie Robinson; one sister, Mildred Stewart; and two 
brothers, Horace and Henry Vinson.

Solomon Flakes Jr.

   (LAFAYETTE) Solomon Flakes Jr., 90, of LaFayette died Friday, May 26, 2006, 
at West Georgia Hospice Center, LaGrange.
   Services were Tuesday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Powell Chapel United Methodist 
Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. David Tucker officiating. Interment was in 
Handy Cemetery, LaFayette.
   Surviving are a son, Curtis Michael Flakes of Mobile; two grandsons; one 
brother, Thomas J. Flakes Sr. of LaFayette; two nephews; and a host of other 
relatives and friends.
   Solomon Flakes Jr., affectionately called "Cutie," was born April 21, 1916, 
in Chambers County. He was the fourth of six children born to the late Solomon 
Flakes Sr. and Artie M. Wheatt Flakes. He was educated in the public schools of 
Chambers County, earned a B.S. degree in education from Alabama A & M University 
(AAMU) in 1953 and did additional studies in education at Tuskegee University. 
Mr. Flakes was a member of Powell Chapel United Methodist Church, a class 
leader, member of the United Methodist Men and the Administrative Council, and 
was a trustee for many years. Mr. Flakes was a member of Eastern Lodge 501, 
where he served as worshipful master for numerous years. He also served in the 
U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Flakes was a devoted educator and loved working 
with young people. He began his career at Unity Hall Elementary School, where he 
was a teaching principal. His teaching-principal assignments took him to Canaan-
Welch, Five Points, White Plains, Pleasant View and Shawmut, where he retired. 
Mr. Flakes was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Lillie Lyle Flakes.

   (WADLEY) Eunice Aikens, 93, of Wadley died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at her 
residence. Mrs. Aikens was born in Randolph County Feb. 22, 1913. She was a 
member of Shiloh Baptist Church, LaFayette, and a homemaker.
   Services will be at Shiloh Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 
with the Revs. Floyd Aikens, Jimmy Brown and Mark McGee officiating. Interment 
will be in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are five daughter[s], Lonida Brooks of Valley, Ruth Davis of 
LaFayette, Lorene Milner of Milltown and Faye Blackmon and Emma Blanks of 
Wadley; four sons, Frank Aikens of Valley, Billy Aikens and Rev. Floyd Aikens of 
Lanett, and Cleave Aikens of Abanda; 29 grandchildren; a host of great-
