Paulette (Steinbeiser) Baranik
Mrs. Paulette (Steinbeiser) Baranik, 49,
Tallahassee, FL; formerly of Altoona, died Monday, Sep 20, 1999, at
Tallahassee Memorial Health Care Center, following an extended illness. She
was born May 31, 1950, in Altoona, the daughter of Raymond and Ann Marie
(Strasser) Steinbeiser. She married Gary Baranik February 15, 1975, in
Altoona. Mrs. Baranik was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church,
Tallahassee. She was a former teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Parochial
School. Mrs. Baranik was a 1968 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School and
a 1972 graduate of Seton Hill College. She was an artist. Mrs. Baranik was
founder of Vision, an organization aiding visually impaired people in Naples,
FL; vice president of the board of directors of the Independence of the Blind;
and a member of Glow International, a women's nondenominational prayer
organization. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Elizabeth of
Tallahassee; a son, Christopher of Tallahassee; her parents of Altoona; a
sister, Christine Toth of Cranberry Township; and two brothers: Raymond of
Hollidaysburg and Stephen of Murrysville. Friends will be received from 8:45
to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at The Stevens Mortuary Inc. BARANIK _ The funeral of
Paulette (Steinbeiser) Baranik of Tallahassee, FL, will be held with a
funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altoona.
Committal will be made at St. Mary's Cemetery Friends will be received from
8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave. She

Lisa M. Holsinger
Mrs. Lisa M. Holsinger, 31, East Freedom RD, died Monday,
Sep 20, 1999, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown, following
injuries she suffered in an automobile accident in Freedom Township on
Saturday, Sep 18, 1999. She was born December 5, 1967, in Roaring Spring, the
daughter of William H. and Theresa (Berkheimer) Musselman. Her father died
April 6, 1985. She married Kenneth D. Holsinger August 15, 1987, in Roaring
Spring. Mrs. Holsinger had been employed at Sam's Club, Altoona, for the past
six years, and had previously been employed at the Roaring Spring Giant Eagle
and the Rax Restaurant, East Freedom. She was an 1985 graduate of Central
High School, Martinsburg. Mrs. Holsinger enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and
gardening. Surviving are her husband; her mother of East Freedom; four
brothers: Martin T. of Newton Hamilton, John R. of State College, Roger L. of
East Freedom and Sandy A. of East Freedom RD; and her grandmother, Martha R.
Spence of Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring
Spring. HOLSINGER _ Funeral services for Lisa M. Holsinger of East Freedom RD
will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring
Spring, with the Rev. Kerry Feathers officiating. Interment will be made at

Virginia M. Wendt
Mrs. Virginia M. Wendt, 84, 237 Bedford St., Newry, died
Tuesday afternoon, Sep 21, 1999, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. She was
born October 4, 1914, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Edgar and Anna
(Wilson) Hamilton. She married William S. Wendt in Altoona. He died July 11,
1993. Mrs. Wendt was previously employed as a supervisor at the former Family
Host Cafeteria, Altoona. Surviving are two daughters: Deborah Kelly of Newry
and Marion Lafferty of Duncansville; two sons: Frank E. of Newry and James E.
of Puzzletown; a brother, Kenneth of Winter Haven, FL; 22 grandchildren; and
36 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Mae
Wigfield, in 1994; and a son, William R., in 1995. There will be no public
viewing. Arrangements by Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg. WENDT _ At the
request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing. Private interment

William J. Heiss
William J. Heiss, 73, 198 Heiss Lane, Duncansville, died
Tuesday morning, Sep 21, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital. He was
born Sep 23, 1925, in Duncansville, the son of the late Paul and Caroline
 (Brunner) Heiss. He married Eva J. Balliet August 19, 1950, at St. John's
Catholic Church, Lakemont. Mr. Heiss was a member of St. Catherine of Siena
Catholic Church, Duncansville. He retired as a meat cutter from Country
Garden Market and was previously employed as a meat cutter with A & P Stores,
with 34 years service. Mr. Heiss was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg Senior
High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and growing blueberries. Surviving
are his wife; three daughters: Carol M. Stell, Deborah J. and Maureen A., all
of Duncansville; a son, William J. Jr. of Johnstown; three sisters: Lena Ott
of Hiram, Ohio, Sister Mary Benedict of McAuley Hall, Cresson, and Betty
Pielmeier of Tucson, AZ; a brother, Francis X. of Munster; and three
grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday

Heiss will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic

Conrad R. Powell Sr.
Conrad R. Powell Sr., 83, 2629 Union Ave., died Monday,
Sep 20, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following an extended
illness. He was born February 9, 1916, in Altoona, the son of the late Meryl
and Edna (Tyier) Powell. He married Lorraine Kisielnicki April 14, 1940, in
Altoona. She died November 20, 1996. Mr. Powell retired as a payroll clerk
from Penelec in 1978 following 28 years of service. He was a 1933 graduate of
Altoona High School and had attended Penn State Altoona. Mr. Powell was an
Army veteran of World War II,    serving as a tank commander. He enjoyed auto
racing, especially the Indianapolis 500. Mr. Powell was a member of the
Oldsmobile Club of America; the A & J laia American Legion Post; and was a
life member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Brotherhood. Surviving are two
daughters: Bonnie Decker of Altoona and Marjorie Grimes of Carlsbad, NM; a
son, Conrad R. Jr. of Allentown; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at The Stevens

Ruth Irene DeMartine
Mrs. Ruth Irene DeMartine, 77, Bellmeade Manor, formerly
of Bellwood, died Monday morning, Sep 20, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. She was
born April 8, 1922, in Tyrone, the daughter of the late George H. arid Leona
Shirk. She married Patrick J. DeMartine. He died January 2,1991. Mrs.
DeMartine was a homemaker. Friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m.
Thursday at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood. DEMARTINE _ Services for
Ruth Irene DeMartine of Bellmeade Manor, formerly of Bellwood, will be held

Cloyd Ake
Cloyd Ake, 80, Osterburg, died Monday, Sep 20, 1999, at UPMC Bedford Memorial
Hospital. He was born February 17, 1919, in Weyant, the son of the late Joseph
C. and Hannah (Berkheimer) Ake. He married Alice N. Weyandt June 20,1949, in
Osterburg. Mr. Ake was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ,
Osterburg. He retired from New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. Mr. Ake was an
Army veteran of World War II, serving in Sicily, Italy and Europe. He was a
member of the Bedford American Legion Post. Surviving are his wife; four
daughters: Sharon Mannion, Karen Miller and Beverly Brown, all of Osterburg,
and Rhoda Garlick of Gallitzin; a son, Gregory of Osterburg; 25
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2
to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at J. Edward Blackburn Funeral Home,
Pleasantville, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Church of

Mrs. Jane L. Benn, 75, Epworth Manor, Tyrone, formerly of 1468
Blair Ave., Tyrone, died Tuesday morning, Sep 21, 1999, at the manor,
following an extended illness. She was born February 18, 1924, in Wingate,
the daughter of Chester A. and Iva (Gramley) Summers. She married Bruce A.
Benn October 10, 1959, at Columbia Avenue Methodist Church. He died August
31, 1997. Mrs. Benn had previously been employed as a machine operator at Big
Yank Corp. She was a 1942 graduate of Tyrone High School. Surviving are a son,
John D. of Tyrone; three sisters: her twin, Mae Romano, and Alice G. Kirk,
both of Tyrone, and Marjorie Knarr of Hundred Springs; a brother, Charles of
Hamburg; and two grandchildren. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon

Mrs. Beth Williams Kurtz, 81, 404 Pine St.,
Bellwood, died Saturday morning, Sep 18, 1999, at her residence, following an
extended illness. She was born October 3, 1917, in Tyrone, the daughter of the
late Frank E. and Anna (Scruders) Williams. She married Paul Kurtz August 9,
1936, in Bellwood. He died Sep 23, 1995. Mrs. Kurtz was a member of Logan
Valley  Presbyterian Church, Bellwood, and had taught Sunday school class at
Olivet Baptist Church, Bellwood, for many years. She was the co-founder and
first librarian of the Bellwood-Antis Public Library, retiring in 1993
following 25 years of service. Mrs. Kurtz was a 1934 graduate of Antis
Township High School and had attended Juniata College and Penn State Altoona.
She enjoyed flower gardening/arranging, reading and gourmet cooking. Mrs.
Kurtz was a member and past president of the Cosmos Club, Bellwood, a
volunteer for the Bellwood Parent Teacher Organization, a member of the
Bellwood-Antis Farm Show Committee, the Bellwood-Antis Band Mothers and a
Bellwood 4-H Club leader. Surviving are three sons: Paul H. of State College,
David W of Ada, OH, and James L. of Idaho Falls, ID; a daughter Elizabeth
Kurtz Lynch of Charlottesville, VA; 11 grandchildren; and a
great-granddaughter. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jon
C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood. KURTZ _ Memorial services for Beth Williams
Kurtz of 404 Pine St., Bellwood, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Logan
Valley Presbyterian Church, Bellwood, with the Rev. Harry Egner and the Rev.
Timothy Wilt officiating. Interment will be made at Logan Valley Cemetery,
Bellwood. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jon C. Russin
Funeral Home, Bellwood. She is survived by grandchildren: Daniel W., Stella,
Kimberley, Eleanor, Christopher, Angela and David Kurtz; Adrienne, Ethan and
Benjamin Paul; and Susanna Lynch; and great-granddaughter, Heather. Mrs.
Kurtz was also a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the American
Tuberculosis Society. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Beth's name may be
made to the Bellwood-Antis Public Library. Mrs. Kurtz also enjoyed literature.

Harold R. 'Dick' Phillips
Harold R. "Dick" Phillips, 67, 15 Ninth St.,
Tyrone, died Tuesday afternoon, Sep 21,1999. He was born March 30, 1932, in
Tyrone, the son of William L. and Ruth E. (Hastings) Phillips. He married
Joyce Taylor August 17,1955. Mr. Phillips was a member of First English
Lutheran Church. He retired as safety and security director from Westvaco
Corp. February 1, 1994, after 44 years of service. Mr. Phillips was a 1952
graduate of Tyrone High School. He served with the Tyrone unit of the
Pennsylvania National Guard. Mr. Phillips was a member of Citizens Fire
Company, where he had served as chief, a member of the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks No. 212 and Tyrone Senior Center. Surviving are his
wife; two sons: James R. and William S., both of Tyrone; and two sisters:
Bella R. Bonsell of Tyrone RD and Mary L. Adier of Dunn, NC. Friends will be
received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home,

Martinsburg, died Tuesday evening, Sep 21, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was
born November 20, 1947, in Roaring Spring, the son of Elvin and Icy Regina
(Longenecker) Rightenour. Mr. Rightenour was a member of Faith Assembly of
God Church, Roaring Spring. He was employed at Altoona Pipe and Steel Co. for
the past 30 years. Mr. Wagner was an Air Force veteran, serving during the
Vietnam conflict. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and searching for mushrooms.
Surviving are two daughters: Kammie C. Cartwright and Merci J. Bragonier,
both of Altoona; two sons: Richard E. Lafferty of Altoona and Michael A. of
McKee, East Freedom RD; four sisters: Fern Dick of Blue Knob, Eleanor
Lawrence of Skippack, Nettie Mooney of McKee, East Freedom RD, and Sarah

John Durbin
John Durbin, 80, Cresson, died Tuesday, Sep 21, 1999, at Oakland
Veterans Administration Medical Center, Pittsburgh. He was born March 21,
1919, in Cresson, the son of the late Michael and Anne Durbin. He married
Betty Kent. Mr. Durbin retired from the Veeder-Root Co. He was an Army
veteran of World War II, where he was a prisoner of war for one year and was
awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Durbin was a member of the Sankertown Memorial
Veterans of Wars Post, the Cresson American Legion Post and a life member of
Cresson Sportsmen's Club. Surviving are his wife of 50 years; three sons:
Gregory, Joseph and Thomas, all of Cresson; three sisters: Anne Michock of
Altoona, Helen Baluka in North Carolina and Susan Schuman in Michigan; and
seven grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Roy V. Wagner
Roy V. Wagner, 70, 1563 Princeton Road, Greenwood, died Tuesday
morning, Sep 21, 1999, at the Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital emergency room.
He was born February 25, 1929, in Altoona, the son of Charles and Verna
(Brannen) Wagner. He was twice married, first to Mary Elvina Romine May 16,
1953. She died in 1956. He then married Mary Ellen Morris June 8, 1961. She
died December 29,1989. Mr. Wagner retired as a landscape architect from Hayes
Large Architects in March 1996, with more than 40 years of service, and was a
partner in Greenwood Golf. He was a 1948 graduate of Altoona High School and
had attended Perm State University Mr. Wagner was an Army veteran of the
Korean War, serving as a private first class. He enjoyed woodworking and
landscaping. Mr. Wagner was a member of Greenwood Lions Club. Surviving are
three sons: David C. of Soldotna, Alaska, Donald A. of Duncansville and Dale
R. of Costa Mesa, CA; two brothers: Dorwin of Greenwood and Wayne of
Lockport, NY.; and five grandchildren. Friends will be received from 6 to 9

Mrs. Florence L. Shimer, 95, Box 700, Altoona RD 5, died
Tuesday evening, Sep 21, 1999, at her home. She was born December 28, 1903,
in Altoona, the daughter of the late Charles W. Sr. and Lavenia (Stitt)
Walker. She married Robert M. Shimer Sr. in February 1950 in Altoona. He died
August 13, 1973. Mrs. Shimer was a homemaker. She was a 1921 graduate of
Altoona High School. Mrs. Shimer enjoyed gardening, flowers and reading. She
was a charter member of the Kittanning Trail Volunteer Fire Department Ladies
Auxiliary Surviving are two stepsons: Richard E. of Altoona and Robert M. Jr.
of Salem, MA; two brothers: William G. of Altoona and Russell C. of Beaver,

He was born July 15, 1947, in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Arthur M. and
Virginia M. (Burkhard) Voelkle. He married Henrietta Moje Sep 24, 1988, in
Lockport. Mr. Voelkle was an optician and former owner of Francis for
Eyeglasses, Lockport. He was an Army veteran, serving as an optician at Fort
Riley, Kansas, during the Vietnam War. Mr. Voelkle was former president of
the Lockport Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Board of Directors of the
American Red Cross, Lockport; a member of the International Roadrunners; and
current Western Pennsylvania representative and former New York state
representative of the Moto Guzzi National Owners Club. Surviving are three
daughters: Amy Herl of Osceola Mills, Erin E. of Tampa, FL, and Kelly M. of
West Seneca NY; a son, Allen Heinrich of Lockport; a sister, Jude Ball of San

Michael A. Daniele, 83, 1609 Grant Ave., died Wednesday,
Sep 22, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following a brief illness.
He was born January 18, 1916, in San Marco, Lamis, Province of Foggia, Italy,
the son of Domenico A. and Carolina (DeLeo) Daniele. He married Eleanor
Grieco. Mr. Daniele was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church,
where he served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He
retired from the Altoona Area School District as a teacher at Roosevelt
Junior High School. Mr. Daniele was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School, a
1940 graduate of Shippensburg College and graduated from Penn Stafe University
in 1950 with a masters degree. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving
as a sergeant. Mr. Daniele was past commander of A & J Iaia American Legion
Post. Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Linda C. Smeigh of Perryopolis
and Sharon J. of Altoona; a sister, Sylvia of Altoona; a brother, Joseph of
Altoona; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Friends will be

Sister M. Thomasine Steel, 78, DePaul Center,
Greensburg, died Thursday, Sep 23, 1999, at Jeannette District Memorial
Hospital. She was born March 10, 1921, in Altoona, the daughter of the late
Thomas C. and Catherine (Luddy) Steel. Sister Thomasine entered the Sisters
of Charity of Seton Hill Sep 8, 1940. She taught music, piano and choir to
middle and junior high students in schools in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh,
Greensburg, Altoona-Johnstown and Tucson, AZ. She served as principal of SS.
Simon and Jude School, Blairsville, and served for 10 years at SS. Peter and
Paul, Tucson. She provided music and composed poetry, a collection of which
is held in the archives of the Sisters of Charity. She retired to the
infirmary in 1988. Sister Thomasine was a 1956 graduate of Seaton Hill
College with a bachelor of music degree and a 1967 graduate of the University
of Pittsburgh with a master of education degree. Surviving are two sisters:
Eileen Becker and Virginia Lloyd; and a brother, Thomas. Friends will be

Dr. Harry L. Gerstbrein, 69, 209 Locust Lane,
Kittanning, died Wednesday, Sep 22, 1999, at Armstrong County Memorial
Hospital. He was born June 30, 1930, in in Greensburg, the son of the late
Harry L. and Rosella (Breinig) Gerstbrein. He married Mildred Draskovich June
16, 1956. Dr. Gerstbrein was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church,
Brady's Bend. He retired as a pathologist from Armstrong County Memorial
Hospital in 1988. Dr. Gerstbrein was a 1948 graduate of Central Catholic High
School, a 1952 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a 1956 graduate of
the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He was an Air Force veteran,
serving as a flight surgeon with the rank of captain. Surviving are his wife;
two daughters: Lisa A. McCanna of Kittanning and Julianne Sugrue of
Pittsburgh; three sons: Timothy M. of Cowansville RD 1 and Eric F. and Harry
L., both of Pittsburgh; three sisters: Catherine A. Nelson, Rose M. Fochler

Marie G. Gibney May 29, 1947, in Altoona. Mr. Gority retired as a forklift
driver from the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1967, and then was the
owner/operator of Gority Upholstery and Refinishing Shop. He was a Navy
veteran of World War II, serving as a seaman first class on a PT boat. Mr.
Gority was an artist and enjoyed archery hunting. Surviving are his wife;
three daughters: Cindy Stanslaw of East Freedom and Mary E. Suders and
Christine M. Rizzo, both of Altoona; two sons: Richard D.of Phoenix and

child-care aide from Ehensburg Center in 1996. He was an Army veteran, serving

Mrs. Margaret N. Lykens, 90, State College, formerly of
Port Matilda and Altoona, died Friday Sep 24, 1999, at Centre Crest Nursing
Home, Bellefonte. She was born April 7, 1909, near Port Matilda, the daughter
of the late Chester M. and Mary Kyle Woodring Pringle. She married George M.
Lykens October 8, 1925. He died March 23, 1993. Mrs. Lykens attended State
College Assembly of God Church. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Lykens attended
Port Matilda-area schools. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star,
Altoona, and White Shrine, Jobel Court; a member and a past councilor of
Daughters of America; and a former member of Altoona Senior Citizens.
Surviving are four sons: Johnson A. of Sun City FL, Dallas K. of Port
Matilda, Markel D. of Colorado Springs, CO, and Gregory P., of Bellefonte; 19
grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two
daughters; Sandra Kay Weisbach and Wanda Johnson; and a son, Blair M. Friends

J. Leonard Dick
J. Leonard Dick, 85, Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg,
formerly of Roaring Spring, died Friday morning, Sep 24, 1999, at the home.
He was born July 25, 1914, in Loysburg, the son of the late William and Maude
(Fluke) Dick. He was twice married. First he married Dorothy Albright. She
died April 5, 1973. He then married Valeska (Shoenfelt) Gochnour. She died
February 22, 1996. Mr. Dick was a member of Albright Church of the Brethren,
Roaring Spring. He retired as a car repairman from Conrail after 41 years of
service and also painted and trimmed trees in the Roaring Spring area for
many years. Mr. Dick was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the
Seabees. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and bowling. Mr. Dick was a member of
Roaring Spring Historical Society Surviving are two sons: J. Larry of Orchard
Park, NY, and Gregory A. of New Enterprise; a stepdaughter, Janice Ramineh of
Altoona; a sister, Elizabeth Balach of Hernando, FL; three brothers Mearle of
Baltimore, Harper of Altoona and Robert of Bellwood four grandchildren; and
two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard L.

Deem. Ms. Hadley retired as a professor of journalism and communications at
Community College of Allegheny County South Campus, in 1996, after 27 years
of service. She previously had taught at Indiana Area High School and was the
proprietor of Deem's Antiques. She was a graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High
School, a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with bachelor's and
master's degrees in English/communication, and a graduate of Columbia
University with a second master's degree in communication. Ms. Hadley was a
member of Hollidaysburg Historical Society, Altoona Area Kennel Club and

a brother, Robert M. of San Diego; four grandchildren, including Ricky L.
Noel of Juniata and William J. Noel of San Diego, both of whom were raised in
the home; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was
preceded in death by a son, William D. Noel, who died July 15, 1999. Friends

Altoona RD 5, died Friday, Sep 24, 1999, at Valley View Home, following a
lengthy illness. She was born May 26, 1913, in Belleville, the daughter of
Amos B. and Mattie (Esch) Glick. She married George M. Cashman, March 10,
1946, in Altoona. He died January 25, 1994. Mrs. Cashman was a member of Mill
Run Chapel. She was a missionary for the Mennonite Church for 19 years. Mrs.
Cashman was a 1944 graduate of Eastern Mennonite College with a two-year
Bible degree. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Church
Sewing Circle. Mrs. Cashman was a member of the AARP. Surviving are two sons:
Mahlon of Westfield, Mass., and Samuel of Sterling, VA; two sisters: Ruth
Kerling of Muldrow, OK, and Ida Kanagy of Belleville; a brother, Vernon of

Olga J. Silavs
Mrs. Olga J. Silavs, aged 93, Porter Hills Presbyterian
Village, Grand Rapids, MI, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, Sep 22, 1999.
She was born August 1, 1906, christened Olga Johanna Zeima Natalia by her
parents, Augusta and Anna (Drukis) Jacobson, in Jelgava, Latvia. She
immigrated with her husband and three children to the United States in 1949,
and after a two-year stay in Sinking Valley, Altoona, PA, the family settled
in Grand Rapids, MI. Olga served many years on the board of directors of the
YWCA, served as treasurer of the YWCA and she chaired the YWCA International
Club. She was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, belonged to
the Rehe Society and volunteered at the day school. Olga retired at age 70
from the Grand Rapids Art Museum, serving in several capacities, including
directorship of the Rent-A-Picture Shop. She was preceded in death by her
son, Andrew, in 1975 and husband, Kristaps, in 1993. She is survived by a
daughter, Inguna (Dr. Hugh T.) Fauser and grandchildren, Christopher Fauser
and Gwenevere (Sean) Moeggenborg; daughter-in-law, Sue Silavs: and
granddaughter, Anne Silavs; son George (Ruth) Silavs and grandchildren,
George David Silavs and Kathryn (Rodger) Howell. She also is survived by
nephew Charles (Monica) Drukis and their three children, as well as two
cousins in Latvia: Malvina Neimanis and Livija Lacis and their families.
Funeral services will be in Grand Rapids on Monday Olga suggested memorial

Frank H. Baker, 85, Mifflin, formerly of Lakemont, died
Saturday morning, Sep 25, 1999, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
He was born February 24, 1914, in Blair County, the son of the late Simon C.
and Pearl M. (Hite) Baker. He married Jane Kaufirnan May 29, 1937. Mr. Baker
was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin. He retired as a
boring mill operator in Machine Shop 1, Standard Steel, Burnham, in 1977,
following 37 years of service. Mr. Baker was a member of York Rite, Juniata
Valley Council No. 64; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Juniata Valley Forest No. 88;
Lakemont Caddies Association; Union Lodge No. 324, Free and Accepted Masons;
and Lewistown Royal Arch Chapter No. 186. Surviving are his wife; two
daughters: Cynthia Ritzman of Thompsontown and Tracy Cisney of Port Royal; a
son, Cliff of Mifflintown; a sister, Anna M. Bounds of Duncansville; two
brothers: William B. of Hollidaysburg and Lynnwood of Phoenix; six
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an

Missionary and Alliance Church, where she had served as a deaconess. She was

of Plymouth, MI; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one

Michael J. Checkaneck, 79, Madera, formerly of Ramey,

November 24, 1920, in Shenandoah, the son of the late Anthony and Mary
(Danaski) Checkaneck. He married Julia Popovich June 14, 1952, at St. Mary's
Annunciation Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey. Mr. Checkaneck was a member of
St. Mary's Annunciation Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey He retired as a coal
miner with Associated Drilling, Osceola Mill, after 20 years of service. Mr.
Checkaneck was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the United
Mine Workers of America and the John Branic Veterans of Foreign Wars Post,
Madera. Mr. Checkaneck enjoyed fishing and hunting. Surviving are his wife;
two daughters: Mary A. at home and Joan Fowler of Philipsburg; two sisters:
Helen Jones of Homer City and Dorothy Sklar of Ramey ; a stepsister, Ann

High School. He attended Penn State University, Altoona, where he was past
president of Politics and Policy Debate Society. He enjoyed hunting and
Altoona Curve games. Mr. Kibler was a past member of Demolay and a Hall of
Fame member of Bell Telephone Pioneers Sports Jamboree. Surviving are his

1898, in Easton, the daughter of the late Thomas Francis and Alice (Sheehan)
McCarthy. She married John J. Hussey April 26, 1933, in Jersey City, NJ. He
died October 3, 1943. Mrs. Hussey was a member of the St. Michael the
Archangel, Hollidaysburg, and the Sacred Heart Church, Bowie, MD. She had
worked as a secretary by Grain Union, and as a clerk/estimator for Marven
Steamship Corporation Division of Bethlehem Steel, both in New York City. She
attended the St. Bernards Perhocial School, Easton, and Sacred Heart School,
Jersey City, NJ. She was a hospital volunteer and a Sunday school teacher.
She was member of the Xavier Society, New York City, and Sacred Heart
Sodality, Bowie, MD. Surviving are a daughter, Alicia H. Bourne of

 Mrs. Barbara "Aunt Babs" Deming, 80, Homewood at Martinsburg,
formerly of Claysburg, died Sunday morning, Sep 26, 1999, at Homewood. She
was born January 2, 1919, in Claysburg, the daughter of the late Peter and
Catherine (Katarintich) Buzminec. She married Dorman Demming May 17, 1941, in
Universal. He died November 12, 1990. Mrs. Deming was a member of the St.
Thomas More Church, Claysburg. She was a member of the National Slovene
Society for more than 60 years, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary
of Claysburg. Mrs. Deming was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. Surviving

Rev. Robert Conlin
The Rev. Robert Conlin, Third Order Regular, 58, St.
Patrick's Church, Tampa, FL died Sunday, Sep 26, 1999, in Tampa. He was born
December 20, 1940, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Robert J. and Helen
M. (Driscoll) Conlin. Rev. Conlin was ordained a priest May 5, 1973, in the
Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, where he served as parochial vicar until 1979
at several locations until his transfer to Arizona for health reasons, where
he served as pastor at several parishes. He was received into the novitiate
of the Franciscan Friars, Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, in
1995, and was assigned to St. Louis Friary, Washington, D.C., for his
novitiate. He made his first profession January 5, 1996, and his solemn
profession as a Franciscan Friar December 12, 1998. He was assigned to
Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, January 20, 1996, and was
engaged in campus ministry He became associate pastor of St. Patrick's
Parish, Tampa, FL August 11, 1997. Rev. Conlin  attended the Brooklyn, NY,
schools, earned his bachelor's degree in English from St. Peter's College,
Jersey City, NJ; did his theological studies and earned his master of
Divinity degree from St. Francis College, Loretto.
He was a member of the Renew 2000, The Prayer Group, Bible Study, Lectors and
Altar Servers. Surviving are two sisters: Joan Fowler of Largo, FL, and
Margaret M. Jones of West Orange, NJ; and three brothers: Lawrence of
Ridgefield, CT, Edward of Mount Clair, NJ, and Richard of Nanuet, NY. Friends

Mrs. Alice Loraine (Aurandt) Eboch, 87, the
Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, died Sunday, Sep 26, 1999, at the home. She
was born February 4, 1912, in Altoona, the daughter of John H. and Grace C.
(Detwiler) Aurandt. She married Edward D. Eboch December 9, 1942, in Altoona.
He died in November 1989. Mrs. Eboch was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She retired as a private secretary for the Bureau of Employment Security in
1978. Mrs. Eboch was a graduate of Altoona High School and the Altoona School
of Commerce. She enjoyed music and playing the piano. Mrs. Eboch was a member
of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are many nieces and nephews, two
of which: Maurlyn Helman of Orient, OH, and Jean Nagle of Flinton, were

Lois I. Walters
Mrs. Lois I. Walters, 60, Blue Knob, Portage RD 2, died
Sunday morning, Sep 26, 1999, at her residence, following an extended
illness. She was born March 13, 1939, in Ore Hill, Roaring Spring RD, the
daughter of the Rev. Harvey and Hannah C. (Pearson) Feathers. Her father
preceded her in death. She married Paul L. Walters November 7, 1959, at Dry
Run. Mrs. Walters was a member of Berean Baptist Church, Duncansville, and a
member of the church choir. She also sang in various churches throughout the
area with her family. She was employed as a notary and secretary at Walters
Auto Body Repairs, Blue Knob, for the past 30 years. She previously had been
employed at Mako Hearing Aid Center, Altoona. Mrs. Walters was a 1957
graduate of Morrisons Cove High School. She enjoyed reading her Bible,
cooking and calligraphy writing. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Rhea
J. Gordon of Blue Knob; four sons: Rex L., Lance E. and Wayne P., all of Blue
Knob, and Marly V. of Altoona; her mother of Valley View Home; four sisters:
Dorothy Mackrell of Scranton, Helen Gibson of Royersford, Sara Brown, of

Kevin Michael Hurd, 42, 1A Evergreen Road, Hollidaysburg,
died Tuesday, Sep 28, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an illness of
cancer. He was born November 7, 1956, in Altoona, the son of J. Donald and
Shirley (Fordney) Hurd. His father preceded him in death. Mr. Hurd was a
member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. He retired on disability
from customer support and the computer education department of Delta Health
Systems, Lakemont. He previously was employed for 10 years in advertising and
graphic design in Westport, CT, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh. Mr. Hurd was a
1974 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, a 1979 graduate of Indiana
University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in fine arts, received
his teaching certificate from Shippensburg University and attended the Arts
Institute of Pittsburgh. He enjoyed running, jazz and sports. Surviving are
his mother of Hollidaysburg; a sister, Constance of Hollidaysburg; and a

Sunday, Sep 26, 1999, at Maple Valley, WA. He was born January 7, 1934, in
Johnstown, the son of the late Blair and Genevieve (Miller) Locke Ivory. He
married Mary Ann Bart November 5, 1960. Mr. Locke was a member of the
Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. He retired as a union carpenter from Penn
Installation, Johnstown. Mr. Locke had attended Altoona Catholic High School.
He was a Marine Corps veteran. Mr. Locke enjoyed hunting and woodworking. He
was a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 900. Surviving are his wife; a
son, James R. Jr. of Maple Valley, WA; and a brother, Joseph of Akron, OH.

after 35 years of service, and had been employed as a civil service sheet

during World War II. He was a 1940 graduate of Tyrone High School. Mr. Miles
enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Evergreen Hunting Camp. Surviving
are his wife; two daughters: Cathy Cowher of Tyrone and Lori Thomas of
Monongahela; a son, Gary of Mount Holly Springs; a brother, Karl E. of

Mrs. Helen P. Deffibaugh, 74, Imler RD, died Tuesday Sep

in Klahr, the daughter of John and Esther (Walter) Musselman. She married
David Merle Deffibaugh April 8, 1950, in Leamersville. He died August
27,1985. Mrs. Deffibaugh was a member of Upper Claar Church of the Brethren.
She retired as a custodian at Claysburg-Kittimel School District in 1989,
after 20 years of service. Mrs. Deffibaugh enjoyed cooking for her family and
walking. Surviving are two daughters: Carol Claar of Glaysburg and Mary L. at
home; two sons: Dennis of Claysburg and David L. of Martinsburg; two sisters:
Susan of Klahr   and   Sarah   of Chambersburg; a brother, David of
Chambersburg; four grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters. She was

Brethren, Martinsburg, where she formerly served as deaconess and primary
Sunday school superintendent. She was a former school teacher at the Dry Hill
and Woodbury Township schools, Bedford County, and was a substitute teacher
for various Blair County schools. Mrs. Miller was a 1925 graduate of
Morrisons Cove Vocational High School, Martinsburg RR I, and attended the
Altoona extension of Pennsylvania State University She was a member of the former
Martinsburg Civic Club. Surviving are two sons: Donald R. of Ebensburg and Gary A. of
Broken Arrow, Okia.; two daughters: Dorothy L. Zook of Casper, WY and Janice
E. Thompson of West Chicago, IL; four brothers: Jesse L. of Martinsburg,
Milton H. of Duncansville, Clark R. of Chardon, OH, and John M. of
McKeesport; four sisters: Freda M. Burket and Martha S. Teeter, both of
Martinsburg, Betty E. Bloom of State College and E. Louise Kenyon of

James A. Despoy II, 21, 911 Beech Avenue, Patton, died
Monday, Sep 27, 1999, at his residence. He was born June 26, 1978, in
Arlington, TX, the son of James A. Despoy and Jean Mary Blair. Mr, Despoy
attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Patton. He was employed as an
optical lab technician at Altoona Optical. Mr. Despoy was a graduate of
Cambria Heights High School. He enjoyed camping and playing his guitar.

Mrs. Katherine R. "Kay" Peyton, 89, Altoona
Hospital Center for Nursing Care, formerly of Box 18, N. Juniata St.,
Hollidaysburg, died Monday night, Sep 27, 1999, at the center, following an
extended illness. She was born May 27, 1910, in Johnstown, the daughter of
the late John and Elizabeth (Kiehl) Rice. She married Edwin E. Peyton March
28, 1942 in Johnstown. He died in November, 1978. Mrs. Peyton was a member of
Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren. She had been employed as a sales
associate at Kline's Department Store, Johnstown. Mrs. Peyton enjoyed
crocheting and attending events at the Duncansville Senior Center. She was a
member of the Hollidaysburg YMCA auxiliary Surviving are several nieces and

Mrs. Rosella F. "Rosie" Shaffer, 89, formerly of
Gaysport, died Tuesday morning, Sep 28, 1999, at Valley View Home, following
an extended illness. She was born June 18, 1910, in East Freedom, the
daughter of the late John and Rachel (States) Delozier.   She married Jesse
G. Shaffer June 30, 1926, in Cumberland, MD. He died May 29, 1995. Mrs.
Shaffer was a member of Puzzletown Road Bible Church. She enjoyed bowling and
crocheting. Surviving are three daughters: Betty Wesselink in Michigan,
Margaret Stevanus of Altoona and Anita Shultz of Johnstown; three sons:
Bennett R. of Hollidaysburg, Robert of Valdosta, GA and Theodore of
Annapolis, MD; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John W., and

Rev. Donald R. Hurley
The Rev. Donald R. Hurley, 74, 150 King St.,
Petersburg, died Tuesday morning, Sep 28, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was
born July 25, 1925, in Petersburg, the son of the late Roy W. and Sarah E.
(Ranck) Hurley. He married Lillian M. Norris June 14, 1953, at Crever
Memorial United Methodist Church, Petersburg. Rev. Hurley retired as a pastor
in 1989. He served as first pastor of the reopened Spruce Creek United
Methodist Church; at Frankstown from 1947-56; Martinsburg from 1956-59; First
Church of Jersey Shore from 1959-66; Williamsport Faxon-Kenmarfrom 1966-79;
superintendent of the Chambersburg District of the United Methodist Church
from 1979-85; and Dillsburg Calvary from 1985-89. Rev. Hurley served on
Petersburg Borough Council, was director of the Quincy United Methodist Home,
and served on the church committees for: Board of Trustees, evangelism,
investigation, camping, scouting and nominations. Following his retirement,
he served the Manor Hill, Warriors Mark and Mapleton Depot charges. He was a
1943 graduate of Petersburg  Vocational High School, attended Juniata
College, graduated from Lycoming College with a bachelor's degree and
graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary with a master's degree in divinity
Rev. Hurley was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European
Theater with the 19th Division, 115th Regiment as a private first class
chaplain's assistant. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received. He
enjoyed nature/birds, gardening/flowers and church music. Rev. Hurley was a
member of the Central Pennsylvania Annual Conference of the United Shore
Rotary Club. Surviving are his wife; a son, the Rev. Donald N. of
Curwensville; and two grandsons. Friends will be received after 7 p.m. today

Theodore Loucks
Theodore Loucks, 76, 1503 N. Fourth Ave., Juniata, died
Saturday evening, Sep 25, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended
illness. He was born July 24, 1923, in Bellwood, the son of the late Orville
and Emma (Lewis) Loucks. He married Amber Lysinger June 14, 1946, at the
Salvation Army, Altoona. Mr. Loucks was a member of the Salvation Army
Worship and Service Center. He retired as a laborer from the Penn Central
Railroad in August 1976. Mr. Loucks was an Army veteran of World War II. He
was a member of Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. Surviving
are his wife; a daughter, Janet Blazevich of Townsend, MT; two sons: J.
Kenneth of Bellwood and James of Altoona; four sisters: Virginia Cook of
Glendale, NY, Betty Sherrow of Phoenix, Norma Potter of Warren, MI, and Joan
Lee of Altoona; three brothers: John of Orlando, FL, and Orville and Patrick,

Leo C. Kelley, 91, 618 Yale Lane, Greenwood, died
Tuesday evening, Sep 28, 1999, at his home. He was born June 29, 1908, in
Altoona, the son of Jesse and Florence (Wharton) Kelley He married Martha
Ryan October 14, 1930, in Cumberland, MD. Mr. Kelley was a member of
Greenwood   United Methodist Church, where he served as a former Sunday
school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher for teenagers and young
adults. He was a former member of the church choir and the men's chorus and
was a lay speaker. He retired as a supervisor for Sylvania in 1973. Mr.
Kelley was an Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the signal corps.
He was a charter member of the Horseshoe Radio Club and the Altoona Civil
Defense. Mr. Kelley was a ham radio operator since 1933 and taught Morse code
classes to area youths to enable them to receive their ham radio operator's
licenses. Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Lucinda K. Weyant of
Martinsburg and twins, Beverly J. at home and Marlene K. Dively of
Alexandria; a son, Davidlee J. of Altoona; a sister, Marie Bordell of
Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg; nine grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be

The Rev. Donald Leroy Mentch, 73, Cobb Island, MD,
formerly of Altoona, died Wednesday, Sep 22, 1999, at his residence. He was
born March 22, 1926, in Altoona, the son of the late Raymond Forrest and
Pearl Mentch. His wife, Marjorie Anne Mentch, preceded him in death. Rev.
Mentch was pastor of Cobb Island Baptist Church and previously had been
pastor of Halpine Baptist Church, Rockville, MD; Potomac Heights Baptist
Church from 1963-69; Faith Baptist Church, Laurel, MD; South Burlington
Baptist Church, Burlington, VT; Friendship Baptist Church, Newark, DE; and
Lost City Baptist Church, Lost City, WV. He graduated from New Orleans
Baptist Theological College. Rev. Mentch was a Navy veteran. Surviving are
four daughters: Gloria Coon, Cynthia Herringa, Melissa Kohnhorst and Donna; a
son. Marc; two sisters: Martha Lozinski and Mae Spotts; a brother, Eldon; 12

Mrs. Pearl J. Feigert, 94, 702 E. Willow St., Elizabethtown,

daughter of the late Henry A. and Mattie A. (Morten) Fine. She married A. Earl
Feigert. He died in 1980. Mrs. Feigert was an avid bowler until age 91. She
enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Surviving are a son, Robert E. of Lititz;
three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death

Jeannette I. Patterson, 96, Portage, died Tuesday, Sep 28, 1999, at
Arbutus Manor, Johnstown. She was born October 26, 1902, in Portage
Township, the daughter of the late James G. and Sarah Ann (Pearce) Patterson.
Miss Patterson was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Portage, where
she was a member of the Adelphian Bible class and the chancel choir. She
retired as an elementary teacher from the Portage Area School District. Miss
Patterson was a graduate of Lock Haven University and Columbia University of
New York. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Pennsylvania
Association of School Retirees. Surviving are two nieces and two nephews,

Richard Bills Sr.
Richard Bills Sr., 75, St. Benedict, died Wednesday, Sep
29, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was born March 13, 1924, in Elder Township,
the son of the late John and Anna (Lann) Bills. He married Eileen Owens. She
preceded him in death. Mr. Bills retired as a teacher from the Northern
Cambria School District and had previously taught at Barr Township and
Purchase Line. He was a graduate of St. Francis College, Loretto. Mr. Bills
was a Navy veteran of World War II, participating in the Normandy invasion at
Utah Beach. He was an American Legion umpire for 28 years, played in the
Industrial Baseball League and was a fan of St. Louis baseball and Notre Dame
football. Mr. Bills was a member of the Ream-Miller Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post, St. Benedict, and the Fox-Pearle American Legion Post, Carrolltown.
Surviving are two daughters: Cynthia at home and Marilisa Painter of St.
Benedict; six sons: Randall and Richard Jr, both of St. Benedict, Gregory of
Mogadore, Ohio, Terrence and Christopher, both of Carrolltown, and Ryan of
Pittsburgh; three brothers: Robert of Allentown, Ronald of Newport News, VA,
and Daniel of Mechanicsburg; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

George Edward Kelley Jr., 69, 285 Chambers St.,
Phillipsburg, NJ, died Tuesday afternoon, Sep 28, 1999, at Warren Hospital,
Phillipsburg, following a heart attack. He was born Sep 17, 1930, in Canoe
Creek, the son of George E. and Kathryn E. (Sausman) Kelly. His father
preceded him in death. He married H. June Hileman February 14, 1954, in
Geeseytown. Mr. Kelley retired as a crane operator from Bethlehem Steel Corp.
in 1995, after more than 30 of years of service. He enjoyed antique cars.
Surviving are his former wife of Hollidaysburg; a son, Nathan P. of Altoona;
two daughters: Paulette J. Wafa of Tyrone and Brenda K. Bidoli of
Duncansville; his mother of Martinsburg; two sisters: Ruth A. Yoder of

She married C. William Keagy. Mrs. Keagy was a member of First United

member of the Association of University Women. Surviving are her husband; two
