Mark Elwood 'Augie' Augustine Jr.
Mark Elwood "Augie" Augustine Jr., 65, Wilmington, DE, died Sunday, August
29, 1999. He was born April 6, 1934, in Pittsburgh, the son of Mark Elwood
and Mary (Schaeffer) Augustine. He was twice married. First he married
Beverly Ann Helsel in Altoona. She preceded him in death. He then married
Sara Kistler. Mr. Augustine retired from the State of Delaware Biggs Data
Center in September 1996, after five years of service , and was previously
employed as a systems analyst in the computer systems division of Hercules
Inc. until 1991, with 23 years of service. He was a 1961 graduate of Penn
State University and did post-graduate work in mathematics at the University
of Delaware. Mr. Augustine was an Air Force veteran, serving four years as a
navigator with the Military Airlift Command, three years with the Air Force
Reserve at Dover Air Force Base and 21 years with the Delaware Air National
Guard 142nd Tactical Airlift Squadron, retiring in 1983 with the rank of
lieutenant colonel. He had been a coach for Capitol Little League and
Marshallton-McKean Basketball League, was a fan of McKean High School
athletics and served as Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack No. 29. Surviving are
his wife of 34 years; three sons: Mark E. III of Altoona, John D. of New York
City and Paul J. of Wilmington; three brothers: Frederick S. of Lititz and
Paul N. and John S., both of Altoona; and a grandson. Friends will be
received from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Doherty Funeral Home, Wilmington.
AUGUSTINE- Funeral services for Mark Elwood "Augie" Augustine Jr. will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 2, at Delaware Veterans Memorial
Cemetery Chapel, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Interment will be made
at the adjoining cemetery. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today at
Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington, DE. He is
survived by a grandson, Mark Evan Augustine. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Mark Evan Augustine College Fund, P.O. Box 460,
Duncansville, PA, 16635.

Melvin M. Keith
Melvin M. Keith, 92, Lake Hamilton, FL, formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday,
August 31, 1999, at his residence. He was born January 4, 1907, in Altoona.
Mr. Keith was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. He retired
as a general contractor. Surviving are a son, Rodney of Lake Hamilton; a
daughter, Phyllis Schaner of Duncansville; a brother, Irvin of Brockway; a
sister, Mary Wendell of Orange, CA; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; and a
son, Edward. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lane-Holt
Funeral Homes, Haines City, FL. Interment will be made in Chambersburg.

John Dyer Little
John Dyer Little, 83, Grazierville, Box 77, Tyrone RD 4, died Monday morning,
August 30, 1999, at his residence. He was born February 14, 1916, in Mercer
County, the son of Edmund
Scott and Ola Belle (Owens) Little. He was twice married. He first married
Mary Elizabeth Shuler
April 14, 1938. She died August 30, 1994. He then married Beulah M.
(Anderson) Irvin December 25,1995. Mr. Little had been employed in various
areas of the construction industry, from building bridges, churches and homes
to being an inspector for IBM and the Fairfax County Public Schools in
Virginia. Surviving are his wife; a son, Ernest of Manassas, VA; two
daughters: Jeanette Finklen of Lexington, KY, and Betty C. Miller of
Haymarket, VA; two stepdaughters:   Helen  Irvin-Jackson of Tyrone and S.
Hope Hartman of Mifflinburg; two brothers: Theodore in FL and Charles in TX;
a sister, Faith Schengosh of Springfield, NY; five grandchildren; three
stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. There will be no public
viewing. Arrangements  by  Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone.
LITTLE _ A memorial service for John Dyer Little will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday Sept. 4, 1999, at the Church of the Brethren, 500 W. 18th St.,
Tyrone, PA, with the Rev. George Baker    officiating. Interment will be made
at Woodlawn Cemetery, Grove City, PA. There will be no public viewing.
Arrangements by Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone. Previous to moving to
Tyrone, he had resided in Virginia for 40 years. Contributions in his memory

William L. 'Bubbles' Endler
William L. "Bubbles" Endler, 66, 624 Deveaux Street, Carrolltown, died Monday
August 30, 1999, at Miners Hospital, Spangler. He was born April 19, 1933, in
Wilmore, the son of the late Albert J. and Amelia  (Bonenschatz) Endler. He
married Helen Krejnus July 8, 1961, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Patton.
Mr. Endler retired as a laborer from Bethlehem Steel Corp.,
Johnstown, after 35 years of service. Surviving are his wife; two sons:
William G. and Kevin J., both at home; two Sisters: Lois Robertson of
Slippery Rock and Helen Bern of East Freedom; and two brothers: Albert J.of
Levittown and Robert of Sidman. Friends will be received from 2 to
4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Stevens  Funeral  Homes  Inc., Carrolltown.

Charlotte (Callaway) Brett Ertley 
Mrs. Charlotte (Callaway) Brett Ertley, 80, passed away Tuesday, June 22,
1999, in Fort Myers, FL, following a brief illness. She was born July 17,
1918, in Camden, NJ, the daughter of
Edward C. and Mary Ann (McClintock) Callaway. She moved to Altoona in 1922
and graduated
from Altoona High School in 1936. She attended Duke University from 1936-38
and graduated with a degree in secondary education from the Penn State
University in 1940. Thereafter, from 1942-75, she taught English at D.S.
Keith Junior High  School  and  Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School, both
in Altoona, and she finished her career teaching the Senior Honors English
Program at Altoona High School. Following her retirement as a teacher in the
Altoona school system, Mrs. Ertley moved to the Lakehurst, NJ area, where she
resided until her move to Fort
Myers in April 1999. Mrs. Ertley was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority
at Duke University and Penn State University and she was a member of the
National Education
Association,  the  Pennsylvania State Education Association and the 
Altoona  Area  Education
Association. Mrs. Ertley is survived by her loving husband, Holmes E. Ertley;
two sons: Edward C. Brett of Charlotte, NC, and Jay A. Brett of Fort Myers;
five grandchildren: Katie Brett, Brian Brett and Alli Brett, all of  Fort
Myers, and Lindsay Brett and James Brett, both of Charlotte.
There will be a memorial service at the Memorial Chapel at Alto-Reste Park
Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests
donations be given to: The, Altoona Public Library, 1600 Fifth Avenue,

Francis A. Figart
Francis A. Figart, 91, Bellmeade Manor, died Sunday afternoon, August 29,
1999, at Beverly Healthcare-Hillview. He was born May 10, 1908, in Altoona,
the son of Joseph F. and Myrtle R. (Frye). He was twice married. First he
married Eleanor Gaut in July 1930. She died in 1938. He then married Mable E.
Peters in 1943. She died July 16, 1984. Mr. Figart was a member of Wehnwood
United Methodist Church. He retired as a printer in 1971 from The Birmingham
Eccentric, Detroit, after 26 years of service. Mr. Figart was a member of
Brotherhood Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Michigan, the Ancient Accepted
Scottish Rite, Jaffa Shrine and the Detroit Typographical Union No. 18 for 40
years. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Dore E. Hahnefeld of Brown City, MI; a
brother, Ray of Decatur, GA; and several grandchildren. There will be no
visitation. Arrangements by E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc.
FIGART- A memorial service for Francis A. Figart will be held at Wehnwood
United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael S. Bequeath officiating.
Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Kincle R. Mayes
Kincle R. Mayes, 77, 418 28th Avenue, formerly of Bellefonte, died Monday,
August 30, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was born September 15, 1921, in
Boggs Township, Centre County, the son of the late G. Edward and Dora (Lucas)
Mayes. He married Arlene Walker July 4, 1942. She died July 30, 1992. Mr.
Mayes had attended United Methodist Church. He retired in 1985 from Corning
Corp., had been a laborer at the Bellefonte Match Factory and Warner Co. of
Bellefonte and worked at UNICO from 1988-95. Mr. Mayes was an Army veteran of
World War II, serving from 1942-44. He was a member of Bellefonte Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post. Surviving are a sister, Velma Mowery of Pleasant Gap; two
brothers: Leonard of Yarnell and Lile of Julian; and a friends, Shirley
Caldwell of Altoona, with whom he resided. Friends will be received from 7 to
9 p.m. today at Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg.
MAYES- Services for Kincle R. Mayes will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday,
September 2, at Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg, PA, with the Rev.
Michael J. Leedom of Fairview Methodist Church of Altoona officiating.
Interment will be at Meyers Cemetery, Benner Township, Centre County. Friends
will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today, September 1, at Dean K. Wetzler
Funeral Home, Milesburg. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean L. Baum
Mrs. Jean L. Baum, 70, 192 Willowbrook Village, Duncansville, formerly of 621
Second Avenue,
Altoona, died Monday evening, August 30, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following
a brief illness.
She was born October 9, 1928, in Altoona, the daughter of the late
Roy S. and Margaret P. (McGlynn) Kline. She married Harry S. Baum June
18,1951, at Cumberland, MD. Mrs. Baum retired from the housekeeping 
department  of Altoona Area School District, with 15 years of service. She
enjoyed reading, puzzles and camping. Surviving are her husband; three
daughters: Cathy J. Doran, Susan L. Swaney and Vicki E. Prugar, all
of Altoona; a son, Stephen E. of Homestead, FL; six grandsons; and one
great-grandson.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at The Stevens
Mortuary Inc.
BAUM _ The funeral of Jean L. Baum of 192 Willowbrook Village, Duncansville,

Ann McGonigle
Mrs. Ann McGonigle, 86, Autumn Estate, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Cresson,
died Wednesday, September 1, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital. She
was born January 22, 1913, in Loretto, the daughter of the late Dr. Harry and
Marie (Murphy) Eckley. She married Adrian J. McGonigle. He preceded her in
death. Mrs. McGonigle was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church,
Cresson. She retired as a teacher and librarian from Penn Cambria High
School, Cresson, with more than 40 years of service. Mrs. McGonigle received
a bachelor's of science degree from the former Indiana Normal School and a
master's degree in library science from the University of Pittsburgh. She was
a former secretary-treasurer at the district and local levels of the
Pennsylvania State Education Association and a member of the Association of
School Retirees and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Cresson Fire Company. Mrs.
McGonigle enjoyed travel and card games. Surviving are a sister, Margaret
Casher of Cresson; and a brother, Robert, in Mexico. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson.
McGONIGLE- A funeral Mass for Ann McGonigle will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at
St. Francis Xavier Church, Cresson, with the Rev. Angelo Patti officiating.
Committal will be made at church mausoleum. Friends will be received from 2
to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where
a wake service will be held in the afternoon. Mrs. McGonigle enjoyed her
family and held weekly local card games for 50 years. She is survived by
nephews: William Casher of Austin, TX; Norman "Tim" Casher and wife Kathy
(Wiedemer) of Duncansville; Geoffrey Casher and wife, Cynthia (Martynuska) of
Cresson; niece Kim and companion, Eileen Birmingham of Pittsburgh; and
great-nieces and great-nephews: Danielle, Andrea, Lindsey, Ian and Elyse
Casher and Caitlin Casher Birmingham. She was preceded in death by a brother,
Dan; and a sister, Marie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to Cresson Fire Company or Cresson Ambulance Service.

Betty L. Datris
Mrs. Betty L. Datris, 83, 616 Rose Hill  Drive,  died  unexpectedly Tuesday
evening, August 31, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an apparent heart
attack. She was born May 11, 1916, in
Altoona, the daughter of the late Robert F. and Bertha M. (Adams) Dibert. She
married George N. Datris April 19, 1941, in Altoona. Mrs. Datris was a member
of Bethany Lutheran Church, the
Win-A-Chum Bible class and Lutheran Christian Women. She formerly had been
employed
as a sales clerk for Kress's and previously was employed by L.S. Shuttlecock
Co.
Mrs. Datris was a member of American Association of Retired Persons.
Surviving are her husband; and two sisters: Elva Charles and Audrey Rice,
both of Altoona. She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis G., June 1, 1974.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at
Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home.
DATRIS _ Funeral services for Betty L. Datris of 616 Rose Hill Drive will be
held at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brian
Armen officiating. Interment will be made at Rose Hill Cemetery Friends will
be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the
funeral home.

Byron H. Lingenfelter
Byron H. Lingenfelter, 93, Laurel Crest Rehabilitation and Special Care
Center, Ebensburg, formerly of  Roaring  Spring  and  East Freedom, died
Wednesday morning, September 1, 1999, at the center. He was born January 4,
1906, in East Freedom, the son of Harvey and Gertrude (Miller) Lingenfelter.
He married Violet P. Fluke November 4, 1925, in Oakland, MD. She died March
30,1993. Mr. Lingenfelter was a member of Altoona Bible Church. He retired as
a locomotive and diesel tender from Penn Central Railroad in 1972, after 49
years of service. Mr. Lingenfelter enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are
three daughters: Doris Claar of Claysburg, Joyce Brown of North Lima, Ohio,
and Patricia   Ratchford   of   East Freedom; a son, Glen B. of Laurel Crest;
four sisters: Ada Delozier of East Freedom, Teressa Bush of Newry Iona Croft
of McKee and Phyllis Smith of Altoona; four brothers: Charles and the Rev.
Galen, both of East Freedom, Paul of Claysburg and the Rev. Homer of
Bedford;  13 grandchildren;  31 great-grandchildren; and 10
great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Betty Jean, died May 4, 1935.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at J. Gary
Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring.
LINGENFELTER _ Funeral services for Byron H. Lingenfelter of Laurel Crest

Carl H. Rudnick
Carl H. Rudnick, 72, Rosebud, Coalport RD, died Wednesday, September 1, 1999,
at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness. He was born February 5,
1927, in Rosebud, the son of the late August and Anna (Wach) Rudnick. Mr.
Rudnick retired from the Air Force in 1956, after 22 years of service. He
then worked as a foreman for Hinkle and McCoy Construction for a number of
years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict, serving as a staff
sergeant. Mr. Rudnick enjoyed fishing. He was a member and former commander of
Richard L. Beers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Coalport; a member of the
International Order of Odd Fellows, Glasgow Chapter No. 350 of the Loyal
Order of Moose, Coalport; the Bavarian Aid Society, Altoona; and the Freeberg
American Legion Post, Houtzdale. Surviving are a son, Bret of Cambridge, MA;
and two brothers: Rodney of Killeen, TX, and Richard of Middlesex, NJ.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today at 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at
Gibbons Funeral Home, Coalport. Mr. Rudnick also was a member of the National
Rifle Association. He is survived by best friend, Betty Siry of Altoona. He
was preceded in death by brothers: Albert and August Jr.; and sisters:
Kathleen Reese and Martha Kutruff.

Paul E. Delozier
Paul  E. Delozier, 71,  East Freedom, died Wednesday September 1, 1999, at
Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. He was born February 6, 1928, in East
Freedom, the son of Theodore and
Ada (Lingenfelter) Delozier. He married  Shirley A.  Sleighter March 31,
1951, in Winchester, VA. Mr. Delozier was a member of Leamersville Grace
Brethren Church. He retired as a driver and dock worker from Ward Trucking in
1989 after 33 years of service and had also served as Freedom Township auditor
for the past 31 years. Mr. Delozier was a Navy veteran of World War II. He
enjoyed cars, baseball and collecting hats. Mr. Delozier was a member of
Claysburg American Legion Post and the Three Valleys Sportsman, Association,
Claysburg RD. Surviving are his wife; two daughters:  Amy  J.  Peake  of
Roaring Spring and Jodi L. Emeigh of Claysburg; two sons: Gary C. of
Glendale, Ariz., and Richard P. of East Freedom; his mother of East Freedom;
a brother, Theodore of East Freedom; and four grandchildren. Friends will be

Cecil W. Snyder, 80, formerly of 109 24th Avenue, died Wednesday, September
1, 1999, at the Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care, following an
extended illness. He was born June 26, 1919, in Altoona, the son of Daniel W.
and Nellie (Parker) Snyder. He married Viola G. Ott June 25, 1941. Mr. Snyder
was a member of First Baptist Church. He retired August 1, 1982, from
Conrail, after 44 years of service. Mr. Snyder enjoyed model railroading. He
was a member of Logan Lodge No. 490 of the Free and Accepted Masons, Jaffa
Shrine, the Provost Guard, the Railroaders Club and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Barbara A. Colaianni of Bridgeville; a
son, Richard F. of Altoona; two sisters: Myra Pottsgrove of Solon, OH, and
Estella Beichler of Altoona; and four grandsons. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Carn-Weaver Funeral Home. He is survived

Samuel W. Clapper
Samuel W Clapper, 89, 76 State St., Seneca Falls, NY, formerly of Altoona,
died Thursday September 2,1999, at Geneva General Hospital, NY. He was born
May 7, 1910, in Altoona, the son of George and Lulu (Ammerman) Clapper. Mr.
Clapper was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Seneca Falls. He retired
as a quality control engineer for GTE Sylvania, Seneca
Falls, in 1965, and was a former dispatcher for North Seneca Ambulance. Mr.
Clapper was a member of GTE Sylvania Quarter Century Club of Seneca Falls,
and Jaffa Shrine Scottish Rite,      Mountain Commandry No. 10, Mountain
Royal Arch No. 89 and Mountain Lodge No. 281 of Free and Accepted Masons, all
of Altoona. Surviving are his wife, Helen; a daughter, E. Catherine Shupp of
Seneca Falls; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. There will be

Dorothy E. Johnson, 88, Valley View Home, formerly of Green Avenue Tower,
died Thursday,
September 2, 1999, at the home, following an extended illness. She was born
April 26, 1911, in
Altoona, the daughter of the late Harry G. and Mary E. (Glass) Johnson. Miss
Johnson was a member First Lutheran Church, Altoona. She retired from the
packaging department of Meyer Jonasson Co. Miss Johnson was a graduate of
Altoona High School. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. There will be

Kenneth E. Myers
Kenneth E. Myers, 71, Box 209, Altoona RD 1, died Friday, September 3, 1999,
at Altoona Hospital, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 1,
1927, in Tyrone, the son of William .M. and Nellie C. (Rinker) Myers. He
married Shirley J. Forsht April 10, 1948, in Juniata. She died January 21,
1984. Mr. Myers was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist
Church, Juniata. He retired as a salesman from The Hite Company in 1978. Mr.
Myers attended Altoona-area schools. He was an Air Force veteran of the
Korean conflict, where he
attained the rank of airman first class. Mr. Myers enjoyed playing cards,
shooting pool and auto racing. Surviving  are  a  daughter, Christine  E. 
Brumbaugh  of Roaring Spring; and four grandchildren. Friends will be

Broad St., Hollidaysburg, died Friday morning, September 3, 1999, at the
center, following an extended illness. She was born September 26,1899, in
Colerain Township, Bedford County,  the daughter of the late Charles A. and
Sara E. (Koontz) Koontz.  She married George R. Diehl in June 1920 at
Rainsburg Reformed Church. He died January 10, 1972. Mrs. Diehl was a member
of St. John's United Church of Christ, Hollidaysburg, where she taught Sunday
school for many years and was a member of the Women's Guild. She was a
homemaker and seamstress. Mrs. Diehl enjoyed Bible study groups and reading.
Surviving are three daughters: Hazel D. Walker of Chesapeake, OH,  Kathleen
D. Piper of Duncansville and S. Grace of Hollidaysburg; a son, Charles D. of
Boonsboro, MD; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandson. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Altoona.
Mr. Petty was employed as plant manager at Sturdy Built Manufacturing, East
Freedom. He enjoyed NASCAR and driver Dale Earnhardt. Surviving are his wife;
three sons: Tom of Duncansville, and Rob and Gerald Jr., both at home; and two
brothers: James R. and

Florine A. 'Lenie' Roberto
Mrs. Florine A. "Lenie" Roberto, 91, 2014 Hudson Ave., died Friday,
September 3, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following a brief
illness. She was born July 12, 1908, in Altoona, the daughter of the late
William and Eleanor (Misciagna) Grassi.  She  married Anthony Roberto
November 24, 1927, in Altoona. He died September 19,1954. Mrs. Roberto was a
member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She was a homemaker. Mrs.
Roberto was a member of  the Catholic Daughters and the Sons of Italy.
Surviving are a daughter, Lenora Weaver of Altoona; a son, Richard W., with
whom she resided; three sisters: Lucy Caputo and Matilda Swartz, both of
Altoona, and Rita Gleason, of Joliet, IL; and one
grandchild. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at

Mrs. Gladys Ake, 82, Osterburg, died Friday morning, September 3,1999, at
Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, following a lengthy illness. She was born
October 25, 1916, in Claysburg, the daughter of the late William and Ida B.
(Dively) Weyandt. She married Clyde M. Ake April 28, 1951, in Bedford. He
died June 16,1992. Mrs. Ake attended Trinity United Church of Christ,
Osterburg. Surviving are a son, James C. of New Enterprise; two daughters:
June Musselman of Martinsburg and Iona Corle of Osterburg, with whom she
resided;  seven sisters: Alice Ake of Osterburg, Mary Ott of Martinsburg, 
Edna  Brown  of Gambrills, MD, Cass Kephart of
Duncansville,  Dora  Claar  of Petersburg, Jean Brown of Altoona and Louise
Cavender of Claysburg; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Friends

daughter of Raymond C. and
Anna (Koontz) Pennington.  She married James L. Callahan May 3, 1947,   at 
St.
Mary's Catholic Church, Altoona. Mrs. Callahan was a member of St. Rose of
Lima Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. She worked in the bingo
kitchen of the church. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Callahan was a 1939 graduate
of Altoona High School. Surviving are her husband; two sons: Patrick M. of
Altoona and James R. of Hollidaysburg; a brother, Raymond C. of Altoona, and
five grandchildren. Friends will  be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

She was twice married. First she married Deforest Golden. He preceded her in
death. She then married Samuel McMullen. He also preceded her in death. Mrs.
McMullen was a member of Free Methodist Church. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are three daughters: Berdene Burket of Tyrone RD 3, Doris Diehl of
Tyrone RD 4 and Beverly Gross of Tyrone; three sons: Ray Golden of Tyrone RD
4 and Darrell Golden and Richard Golden, both of Tyrone; two sisters: Marion
Keith of Beverly Healthcare-Hillview and Ruth Corl of Imler; a brother,
Wilbur of Leamersville; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three

(Hershberger) Over. She married W. Emmert Pepple  November 23, 1929, in
Woodbury. He died Aug. 29, 1977. Mrs. Pepple was a member of
Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg. Surviving are two daughters:
Constance L. Emmert of Dallas Center,  Iowa,  and  Dolores  J. Barkman of
Woodbury; a son, Donald W. of Woodbury; a brother, Harold of New Enterprise;
12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a

Morning December 8, 1932, in Altoona. He died November 8, 1961. Mrs. Morning
was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a 1928 graduate of

William V. Hileman Sr.
William V. Hileman Sr., 80, Valley View Home, formerly of Cross Keys Village,
Duncansville, died Saturday morning, September 4, 1999, at the home, following
a stroke. He was born December 25, 1918, in Altoona, the son of the late Harry
and Jessie (Price) Hileman. He
married Mary C. Dimond. He retired as a brakeman/conductor from Conrail in
1979, after
35 years of service. Mr. Hileman was an Army veteran of World War II, serving
as a
rifleman, and was awarded the combat infantryman's badge for service in the
Philippines. He enjoyed watching golf, boxing and going walking. Surviving
are his wife; four daughters:  Patricia  A.  McKinney  of Charleston, SC,
Marcia K. Barrett of Hollidaysburg, Kathy J. Meckley of
Duncansville and Carol L. Sinchak  of Essex Junction, VT;  a son, James of
Harrisburg; two sisters: Mary L. Wagner of Camp Hill and Dorothy Smith of
Altoona; four brothers: Faye  of State College, James of Lancaster and Paul
and Joseph, both of Altoona; six grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William V. Jr.
There will be no public viewing. Arrangements by Vincent J. Good Funeral
Parlor, Altoona.
HILEMAN- A memorial Mass for William V. Hileman will be held at  8 a.m.
Monday September 13,1999,  at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at
Alto-Reste Park, Altoona. At the request of the deceased, there will be no

Agnes Jane Swoope
Mrs. Agnes Jane Swoope, 57, Madera, died Saturday afternoon, September 4,
1999, at her residence. She was born November 24, 1941, in Philipsburg, the
daughter of William H. Sr. and Mary (Nevling) Hawkins. Her father died
February 8, 1989. She married Henry B. Swoope IV October 9, 1963, in
Arlington, VA. Mrs. Swoope was a member of Madera Presbyterian Church. She
was employed as a registered nurse in Bel Air, MD. Mrs. Swoope was a 1959
graduate
of Moshannon Valley High School and a 1962 graduate of the Altoona Hospital
School of Nursing. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Penny
Leigh-Reinecke of Ramey; a son, Henry B. V. of Alexandria, VA; her mother of
Madera; a sister, Mary L. of Harrisburg; two brothers: William H. Jr. and
John E., both of Madera; and two granddaughters. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 8:30 to 10:30  a.m.  Tuesday  at

James A. Singer 
James A. Singer, 68, Heritage Park Health Care Center, Jamestown, NY,
formerly of 14 First St., High Acres, Bemus Point, NY, died Friday evening,
September 3, 1999, at the center. He was born May 28, 1931, in Altoona, the
son of the late Allen and Gladys Fae (Watson) Singer. Mr. Singer was a member
of Lakewood  United  Methodist Church, Lakewood, NY, and a former member of
Grace Methodist Church, Altoona. He retired as an office worker from 
Marlin  Rockwell  Corp., Jamestown in 1996, after 43 years of service. He was
a 1950 graduate of
Altoona High School and had attended Juniata College. Mr. Singer was a Navy
veteran.
Surviving are a son, Randy of Ashville, NY; a sister, Donna Gottshall of
Altoona; and two
brothers: Richard of Altoona and Gary of Olean, NY. Friends will be received
from 7 to

Mrs. Sharon K. Miller, 48, 423 Walnut St., Roaring Spring, died Saturday
morning, September 4, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. She was born July 14, 1951,
in Montour, NY, the daughter of
Robert C. Jr. and Flora E. (Bush) Kerns.  Her  mother  died  in February
1997. She married LeRoy E. Miller August 15, 1970, in Watkins Glen, NY. Mrs.
Miller was employed at
News  Printing  Co.,  Roaring Spring, for the past eight years. She was a
1969 graduate of
Watkins Glen High School. She enjoyed working with computers. Surviving are
her husband; three daughters: Heide Walter, Stacey and Heather, all of
Altoona; her father of Dunnellon, FL; three sisters: Bonnie Leonard of
Wyoming, NY, Carolyn Higginson of Grand Lake CO, and Emmy of Odessa, NY; and
three grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Genevieve H. Kauffman
Mrs. Genevieve H. Kauffman, 90, Epworth Manor, Tyrone, formerly of Bellwood,
died Sunday morning, September 5, 1999, at the manor, following an extended
illness. She was born January 1, 1909, in Bellwood, the daughter of the late
Lloyd Ira and Prudence Ora (Stayner) Garver. She was twice married. First she
married Harry Huff. She then married Theodore R. Kauffman. He died September
14, 1994. Mrs. Kauffman had been employed as a clerk/buyer at Woodhall's
Store, Bellwood. She also restored dolls in her home and donated about 100 a
year to Danville Nursing Home. She enjoyed crafts, quilting and embroidery.
Mrs. Kauffman was a member of
Logan Valley Grange, where she won the 1991 local Grange woman of the year
award for quilts, crafts and needle work. Surviving are two sons: Kenneth E.
Huff of Silver Spring, MD,  and
Donald L. Huff of Bellwood; and four grandchildren. friends will be received
from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood. 
KAUFFMAN- Services for Genevieve H. Kauffman of Epworth Manor, Tyrone,
formerly
of Bellwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home,

following a brief illness. He was born November 17, 1936, in McKee, the son
of Edward and Martha (Merritts) Gray. He married Shirley McIntyre. Mr. Gray
retired as a driver for James McNulty Jitney Service in 1990. He enjoyed
fishing. Mr. Gray was a member of the Coalport Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his common law wife, Kathleen Harris; a daughter, Judith Wertz
of Altoona; three sons: Thomas of Osceola Mills, William of Altoona and Randy
of Harrisburg; a brother, John of Juniata; 20 grandchildren; and six

Malvin "Bob" Kerr Jr., 61, Atlantic, Houtzdale RD,  died Sunday morning,
September 5, 1999, in
Beulah, Madera RD. He was born September 6, 1937, in Glen Hope, the son of
Malvin Sr. and Dorothy (Mann) Kerr.  His father preceded him in death. He
married Delores E. Bierlair December  21, 1957, in Ramey She died February
12, 1993. Mr. Kerr was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Flango 
Brothers  Coal  Co., Houtzdale, and G & S Timber Co., Curwensville. He was a
veteran of the Army and Army Reserve, serving from 1956 to 1962.
Surviving are a son, Richard of Clearfield; four daughters: Sherry Wills of
Dysart RD, Tammy Gray of Clearfield, Bobbi Bloom of Madera RD and Tina
Nestlerode of Atlantic, Houtzdale RD; his mother, Dorothy (Mann) Light of
Beulah, Madera RD.; two brothers: Myrl of Osceola Mills and Richard of
Houtzdale; two sisters: Linda Spencer of Beccaria and Delores Burton of

Mrs. Ethel N. Benson, 71, 1301 Sixth Ave., Duncansville, died Saturday
evening, September 4, 1999. She was born July 16, 1928, in Altoona, the
daughter of the late Harry N. and Ethel (Strunk) Stiffler. She married Melvin
R. Benson March 18, 1950, at First Lutheran Church, Altoona. Mrs. Benson was a
member of Hick's Memorial United Methodist Church, Duncansville. She assisted
her husband with the operation of Mel Benson Auto Sales, Duncansville, and
previously had been employed as a teller at Hollidaysburg Trust Company. Mrs.
Benson was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School and an honors graduate of
Zeth Business School, Altoona.
She enjoyed camping and animals. Mrs. Benson was a member of the
Hollidaysburg Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and the Owls Club of
Duncansville. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Mary A. Wolicki of  New Holland; two sons: Dennis R. of East
Freedom RD 1 and Jeffrey A. of Duncansville; two sisters: Norma Yorgy Pfaller
of Topsfield, MA, and Lois Wray of Allison Park; and five grandchildren.

September 6, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was born May 15,1919, in
Carrolltown, the son of John E. and  Sarah  E.
(Allan) Ellis. He married  Madolyn  I.  Miller June 23,1943, in Greenwood.
Mr. Ellis was a
member of Greenwood United Methodist Church. He was employed as administrator
of Maple Mountain Manor, Berlin, from 1968-84. He had been administrator  of 
Valley View Home, Altoona, from 1960-68 and was  a  sergeant  with  the
Pennsylvania Railroad police from 1948-60. Mr. Ellis was an Army veteran of
World War II, serving as a sergeant in the South Pacific. He was a member of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a former member of the American
Legion and a member of Logan Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. Surviving are
his wife; a son,
Lloyd A. of Baltimore; two sisters: Elizabeth Gauntner of Altoona, and Laura
J. Zong of East Freedom; six brothers: David in California, Walter G. of
Duncansville, Fred W., Howard W.
and Melvin L., all of Altoona, and Ben of Media; and two grandchildren.

Reilly.  She  married   Amos   C. Mellott Jr. February 27, 1946, at St.
Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. He died May 31,1990.
Mrs. Mellott was a lifetime member of St.. Michael the Archangel Catholic
Church, Hollidaysburg. She was a 1941 graduate of Hollidaysburg Senior High
School. Mrs. Mellott enjoyed playing pinochle. She was a member of the
Catholic Daughters of America and the AARP. Surviving are two daughters:
Marjorie E. Harker of Maple
Hollow and Melody A. Grassmyer of Duncansville: a sister, Mary Grace Harker
of Altoona; a brother, John M. of Hollidaysburg; and four grandchildren.

bachelor's degree in hospital health policy and administration. Mr. Jones
enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of the Pennsylvania

home; two sisters: Rhue Davis of New Paris and Nancy Carter of  Altoona; and

Dennis R. Harkless, 46, 406 S. Fifth St., died Sunday morning, September
5,1999, at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a lengthy illness. He
was born August 3, 1953, in Altoona, the son of Ralph W. and Genevieve D.
(Sasala) Harkless. He married Beatrice M. Scherden August 26, 1989, at St.
Leo's Catholic Church. Mr. Harkless was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic
Church,
Juniata. He was employed as a custodian by the Altoona Area School District
at Roosevelt Junior High School. Mr. Harkless was a 1971 graduate of Altoona
Area High School. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife; his
parents of Altoona; and two brothers: Kenneth E. and Barry I., both of
Juniata. There will be no public viewing. Arrangements by Mauk and
Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata.

Mrs. Cecelia M. Gildea, 92, 3713 Broad Ave, died Saturday, September 4, 1999,
at Laurel Crest Rehabilitation and   Special   Care   Center, Ebensburg. She
was born October 19, 1906, in
Altoona, the daughter of the late Charles and Wilhelmena (Wissinger) Bender.
She married
Murry Gildea. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Gildea was a member of Our Lady
of Lourdes Catholic Church. She retired as an insurance agent from Knight's
Life Insurance Co. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Friends will be

Clare Louise Bradley, 86, Laurel Crest Rehabilitation and Special Care
Center, Ebensburg, formerly of Gallitzin, died Sunday, September 5, 1999, at
the center. She was born March 30, 1913, in Gallitzin, the daughter of the
late Edward and Mary (Biller) Bradley Miss Bradley was a member of St. 
Patrick's  Catholic  Church, Gallitzin. She retired from Publix Shirt
Factory, Gallitzin. There will be no viewing. Arrangements by Lenz-Gibbons

Azilee J. Schucker
Mrs. Azilee J. Schucker, 81, Epworth Manor, Tyrone, formerly of 1515 25th
Ave., died Sunday,
September 5, 1999, at Tyrone Hospital. She was born August 22, 1918, in
Cumberland Falls, KY, the daughter of Ben and Irene (Neal) Johnson. She
married Melvin John Schucker January 14, 1940. He died February 21,1976. Mrs.
Schucker was a member of First Baptist Church, Altoona.
She retired as an inspector from Saf-T-Bak Inc. Mrs. Schucker was a 1937
graduate of Whitley City High School, Kentucky,  and  a  graduate  of
Bowling  Green  University, Kentucky, with a degree in business. She enjoyed
reading, cooking and gardening. Surviving are two daughters:
Judith Horton of Harrisburg and Melva Kamoie of Altoona; and two grandsons.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Leslie E. Axe
Funeral Home.

Ruth Idella Patterson
Mrs. Ruth Idella Patterson, 83, Claysburg RD, died Monday, September 6, 1999,
at Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care. She was born May 3, 1916, in
Pavia, the daughter of the late
Howard Ellsworth. and Annabelle (Langham) Brown. She was twice married. First
she married James Helsel. He died in 1947. She then married Fred Patterson
July 2, 1953. He died December 31, 1963. Mrs. Patterson retired as a sewing
machine operator from Cove Shoe Co. in 1978, and had previously   worked  
at   Puritan Sportswear, Altoona Shoe Co. and as a paper hanger. She enjoyed
reading and sewing. Surviving are five daughters: Annabelle Glass and Vera
Brown,
both of East Freedom, Sally Walter and Phyllis Knisely, both of Claysburg,
and Mary J. Mock of
Imler;  two sons: Freddie Patterson of Claysburg and Eddie Patterson of New
Enterprise; a sister, Verna of Bedford; two nephews who were raised in the
home: Roy Hummel and Sherman Brown; 29 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-granddaughter. A son, James Helsel, died September 26,
1996. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Miller
Funeral Home, East Freedom.

nephews whom she loved. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Ella

Mary (Gural) Zapotoczny
Mrs. Mary. (Gural) Zapotoczny, 84, Beverly Healthcare-Hillview, formerly of
2410 12th Ave., died Monday evening, September 6, 1999, at the home. She was
born February 27, 1915, in
Snow Shoe, the daughter of Hnat and Rose (Brizetski) Gural. She married
Joseph Zapotoczny February 27, 1937, at Ss. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox
Church. He died May 5, 1967.  Mrs. Zapotoczny was a member of Ss. Peter and
Paul Russian Orthodox Church.  She retired as a clerk from the  State
Department of Welfare in 1980, following 10 years of service, and also was a
homemaker. Surviving are a daughter, Janet McDonald of Springfield, VA; a
son, Joseph of Waynesboro; two  sisters: Anne Nason of Monkton,  MD, and Olga
Lawruk of  Bellwood; two brothers: Joseph of Altoona and Michael of Madison,
Ohio; and four grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home.

Mrs. Marjorie Tromm, 73, 915 Fourth Ave., died unexpectedly Tuesday morning,
September 7, 1999, at Altoona Hospital emergency room, following an apparent
heart attack. She was born May 4, 1926, in Altoona, the daughter of the late
Hayes  and  Myrna  (Smith) McKelvey. She married Harold F. Tromm June 16,
1961, in Altoona. Mrs. Tromm was a member of Second Avenue United Methodist
Church and a member of the Sunshine Sunday school class. She was formerly
employed at McCrory's and Keatley & Kneppers Dry Cleaners. Mrs. Tromm was a
1944 graduate of Altoona High School. She enjoyed collecting knick knacks and
crocheting. Surviving are her husband; two daughters:  Pamela  Russell  of
Cherry Tree and Lisa Esworthy of Altoona; two stepdaughters: Diane J. of 
Altoona  and  Patricia Graffious of Saxton RD; two step sons: H. Fred of
Durham, NC and Kenneth H. of Gerrardstown, WV; eight grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Clyde L. Shade
Clyde L. Shade, 79, 649 Mountaindale Road, Fallentimber, formerly  of 
Bellwood,  died Tuesday, September 7, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was born
January 26, 1920, in Hollidaysburg, the son of the late Warren and Lizzie
(Ickes) Shade. He married Hazel I. Klinger March 1,  1946,  in Cumberland,
MD.  She died December 1, 1990. Mr. Shade retired as a car repairman from
Conrail in 1980, with 39 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World
War II, serving with the 1479th Service Command Unit in the European Theater.
He enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Surviving are two daughters: Darlene
Greene of Deland, FL, and Bonnie Karlson of Stow, OH; three sons: Marlin F.
of  Deland, FL, and Charles W. and Paddy W.,
both of Mountaindale; 16 grand- children; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a son, Dale, January 12, 1989. Friends will be received

been a coal miner and farmer. Surviving are a daughter, Rosella Irwin of 
Irvona RD;  two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded

Sylver R. 'Sy' Brown
Sylver R. "Sy" Brown, 55, 306 Fairways at Blairmont, Hollidaysburg, died 
Monday evening, September 6,1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended
illness. He was born July 23, 1944, in Kingston, the son of the late Sylver
and Mary (Zaiepa) Brown. He married Helen Graybill. Mr. Brown attended St.
Mary's Catholic Church, Exeter. He was  a  senior  partner  of  Total
Concepts and Canopy Club, Hollidaysburg. Mr. Brown was a 1962 graduate of
Exeter High School and a graduate of Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre. He was
a Marine Corps veteran. Surviving are his wife; two step daughters: Tracy
Brenner of Hollidaysburg and Tressa Cousar of Stone Mountain, GA; and three
sons: Sylver of Moosic, Brett of Philadelphia and Craig of Los Angeles.

Thomas T. Scacco
Thomas T. Scacco, 80, 4903 Walnut Ave., died Tuesday, September 7, 1999, at
Valley View Home, following an extended illness. He was born December 19,
1918, in Altoona, the son of the late John and Pauline Scacco. He married
Helen S. Brown January 12, 1952, in Altoona. Mr. Scacco was a member of Our
Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He retired as a truck builder and car
repairman from Conrail in 1980, after 40 years of service. Mr. Scacco was an
Air Force veteran of World War II. He enjoyed bowling. Surviving are his
wife; and a son, Gary A. Smith of Fredericktown. Friends will be received

David H. Hescox, 76, 603 N. Fifth St., Bellwood, died Tuesday, September 7,
1999, at his residence. He was born August 29, 1923, in Bellwood, the son of
the late Howard B. and Flossie L. (Miller) Hescox. He married Rose V. Stetter
November 11, 1944, in Columbia, SC. Mr. Hescox attended the New Life Assembly
of God Church, Pinecroft. He retired as a machine shop operator from 
Admiral  Perry Vocational  Technical  School, Ebensburg, in 1985, following 22
years of service. He previously taught at Penn Cambria High School for seven
years, was formerly employed as a machinist at the Pennsylvania Railroad for
17 years, and   previously   was
employed by SKF Industries. Mr. Hescox was a 1941 graduate of Penn State
University and a member of Lamda Sigma Fraternity. He was an Army veteran of
World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Mr. Hescox enjoyed
fishing and hunting. He was a member of Tyrone Lodge, Free and Accepted
Masons, Altoona Consistory, was active in the United Way campaign and a
member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. Surviving are his
wife; a son, David D. of Tyrone RD 2; three daughters: Donna D. and Hope E
Foor, both of Bellwood, and Karen L. Riley of Altoona RD 4; a foster
daughter, Nancy McFalls of Downingtown, and a foster son, Raymond Mock of
Hollidaysburg, both of whom were raised in the home; a brother W. Kahl of
Bellwood; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Friends will be
received from 3:30 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Jon
C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood.

Margaret J. Abbott
Mrs. Margaret J. Abbott, 70, 400 Ninth  Street,  Philipsburg,  died Tuesday
morning, September 7, 1999, at the home of her son in DuBois. She was born
November 26, 1928, in Philipsburg, the daughter of the late William and
Margaret (Walters) Herrington. She married William E. Abbott Sr. December 25,
1947, in Philipsburg. He died September 25, 1991. Mrs. Abbott was a member of
First Presbyterian Church, Philipsburg. She was owner/operator of Peggy's
Beauty Shop, Philipsburg, for more than 50 years. Mrs. Abbott was a 1946
graduate of Philipsburg High School. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and
crafts. Mrs. Abbott was a member of Philipsburg Order of Eastern Star
Chapter. Surviving  are  three  sons: William E. Jr. of Bellwood, John B.
Sr. of Treasure Lake, DuBois, and Charles H. of Spring Grove; a brother, John
E. of Philipsburg;

19, 1945, in
Altoona, the daughter of  Joseph and Genevieve Vasile. Her father died in
1982. She  married      Frank Wioskowski October 5, 1968, at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, Altoona. Mrs. Wioskowski was a 1963 graduate of Altoona Area
High School. Surviving are her husband; her
mother of Altoona; and a daughter, JoAnna at home. Friends will be received
from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Dabrowski-Chojnacki   Funeral Home,
Baltimore. Interment will be made in
Baltimore.

Amelia F. Yanke, 3607 Broad Ave., Altoona, PA, died September 8, 1999, at
Altoona Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born in Altoona February 22,
1926, the daughter of August  and
Anna (Fensloch) Yanke. Miss Yanke was a charter member of  the First
Evangelical
Independent Methodist Church,  where she faithfully attended and worshiped.
She was a
member of the Edna Hirst Bible Class, Evangelical Women's Group, a soloist,
sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school. Her life was devoted to
her church, her family and friends. She retired from Sylvania after 35 years
of service and also had worked at Boyer Candy Co. and the
Gospel Book Store. She was a 1943 graduate of Altoona High School. Surviving
are one brother, Joseph, with whom she resided; and by three sisters: Martha
of Duncansville, Clara Esworthy of Altoona and Wanda Dougherty of Dundalk,
MD. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Jacob A. and Edward Yanke. She
loved doing Bible crossword puzzles and enjoyed games and bowling. Friends
will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in Gilden Barton Funeral
Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday  in  First  Evangelical
Independent Methodist Church by the Rev. Ralph W. Hamer and the Rev. Joe
Kelly. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,
contributions can be made to the window fund of First  Evangelical 
Independent Methodist Church.

David H. Hescox, 603 N. Fifth Street, Bellwood, who died September 7, 1999,
retired as a machine shop instructor from Admiral Peary Vocational-Technical
School, Cresson, for nine years. His job title and years of service were

Donald B. Burkett, 85, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Warriors Mark
and State
College, died Thursday morning, September 9,1999, at the home. He was born
September 20, 1913, in Homers Gap, the son of Guy L. and Nellie Burkett. He
married Estella L. Emeigh February 5,1941, in Cumberland, MD. She died August
22,1995. Mr. Burkett attended Warriors
Mark United Methodist Church. He retired as a freight conductor from Conrail
in 1976, following 30 years of service. Mr. Burkett was a Navy veteran of
World War II,  serving as a machinist
mate in the European, African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic and Pacific theaters.
He was a member of Fort Fetter  American  Legion  post, Hollidaysburg.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Betty
J. Harpster of Boalsburg; a stepson, James E. Emeigh of Vineland, NJ; four
stepgrandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and three

Verneda Mildred Black
Mrs. Verneda Mildred Black, 77, Claysburg RD 1, died Wednesday, September 
8,  1999,  at  Conemaugh Memorial   Medical   Center, Johnstown. She was born
January 1, 1922, in Queen, the daughter of the late Frederick and Edith
(Hoenstine) Eicher. She married Leroy Black
July 27, 1940, in Front Royal, VA. Mrs. Black was a member of Lower Claar
Church of the
Brethren, where she served as deaconess and was a member of the adult Sunday
school class.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Black enjoyed crafts, gardening and flowers. She
was a member of Claysburg Senior Center. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Bessie Dively of Claysburg; three sons: Benjamin of Hollidaysburg,
Robert of Imler and Timothy of Claysburg; 10 grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Alice N. Weaver
Mrs. Alice N. Weaver, 73, 416 Powell Ave., Cresson, died Friday, September
10, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. She was born March 6, 1926, in Sankertown, 
the daughter of the late Francis X. and Mary (Corman) Schwaderer. She married
Harry G. Weaver in July 1949. Mrs. Weaver was a member of Cresson United
Methodist Church. She retired as a child care aide from the Cresson and
Ebensburg Centers in 1986. Mrs. Weaver was a craftsman in weaving/spinning,
knitting and crocheting. She was a volunteer at Lemon House, Cresson, from
1976 to 1986; at
Fort Roberdeau, Sinking Valley, until 1994; and was a member of the
Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and secretary-treasurer of the Cresson
Cemetery Association. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Linda of
Cresson; two sons: George of San Antonio and Timothy of Altoona; and three
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son. Friends will be
received from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  Sunday  at

Mrs. June Louise Barley, 76, 730 Shady Drive, Harrisburg, formerly of
Altoona, died Friday September 10, 1999, at Harrisburg Hospital. She was born
July 3, 1923, in Altoona, the daughter of Charles R. and Ethel May
(Shellenberger) Whitehead. She married Melvin E. Barley. He preceded her in
death. Mrs. Barley was a member of First Church of God, Highspire, and its
KYB Sunday school class. She had co-owned and operated the former Barley's
News Agency, Highspire, with her husband. Mrs. Barley was a graduate of
Altoona High School. Surviving are a son, Timothy E. Sr. of Lancaster; a
daughter, Susan L. Saylor of Hershey; a sister, JoAnn Giordano of Altoona;
four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Friends will be received

Regis E. Dixon
Regis E. Dixon, 82, 14 Indiana Drive, died Thursday evening, September 9,
1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was born May 6, 1917, in Altoona, the son of
the late James and Alice (Butler) Dixon. He married Elizabeth Vaile February
15,1943, in Cleveland. Mr. Dixon was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He retired as a sheet metal worker and pipefitter from Conrail in
1978, following 42 years of service. Mr. Dixon was a 1936 graduate of Altoona
High School.
He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in
the 8th Air Force.
Mr. Dixon enjoyed golfing and woodworking. He was a member of Sinking Valley
Country Club,   the American  Legion,  chairman, financial secretary and
member of local No. 525 Sheet Metal Workers Union for 25 years and vice
general chairman of District Council No. 152  of  Sheet  Metal  Workers
International. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Jennifer Loucks of  Boynton
Beach, FL; two sons: Richard of Altoona and James of Hackettstown, NJ; nine
grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Friends will be received from 2
to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at The
Stevens Mortuary Inc.

Clarence M. 'Jiggs' Meckley
Clarence M. "Jiggs" Meckley, 73, 1322 Old Forge Road, Niles, OH, formerly of
Altoona, died Tuesday morning, September 7, 1999, at Cortland Quality Care
Nursing Center. He was born July 8, 1926, in Altoona, the son of the late
Charles and Anna (Eisel) Meckley He married Alice A. Whippo. She died August
7,1999. Mr. Meckley retired as a mechanic from LTV Steel, with more than 30
years of service; and was a former school bus driver for Liberty Schools. He
was a Navy veteran of World War II. He enjoyed league bowling and gardening.
Surviving are a son, Steve of
North Beach, MD; two daughters: Judy Johnson and Janice, both of Orlando, 
FL;  three  brothers: James in Ohio, and Leroy and Sheldon, both of Altoona;

Gorjana Litvinovic
Gorjana Litvinovic, 39, Duncansville,  formerly of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and
Chapel
Hill, NC, died Friday September 10, 1999, in Altoona, after a five-year
illness of cancer. She was born January 1, 1960, in Belgrade, the daughter of
Dusan and Milka Litvinovic. Ms. Litvnovic was an assistant Professor of
Psychology at St. Francis College. She had been book review editor of the
Journal of Cultural Psychology; was the recipient of an National Science
Foundation grant, and recipient of a Social Science Research Council
Fellowship for research in Brazil. She was a graduate of the University of
Belgrade with a bachelor's and master's degree, and a 1998 graduate of the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a doctorate in developmental
psychology
Ms. Litvinovic was a member of the Society for Research in Child Development
and the National
Science Foundation. She enjoyed reading, languages and travel. Surviving 
are  a  daughter,
Katarina Lukic at home; and a sister, Snezana of Duncansville, with whom she
resided. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Plank, Stitt and

Walter A. Wertz
Walter A. Wertz, 64, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, died Thursday, September 9,
1999, at the home, following an extended illness. He was born August 24, 1935,
in Altoona, the son of Kenneth and Agnes (Fochler) Wertz. Mr. Wertz was a
member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. He retired as a
metal fabricator in 1982. Mr. Wertz attended Altoona High School. He was an
Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam conflict. Surviving are two sisters:
Mary M. Nichols of Fairmont, WV, and Rose M. Nichols of Cowansville; and two
brothers: George and Benjamin, both of Altoona. There will be no public

W. Duane Mock
W. Duane Mock, 55, Easton Road, Alum Bank, died Friday, September 10, 1999,
as the result of a heart attack while driving his car in Somerset County. He
was born October 21, 1943, in
Lincoln Township, the son of the late Bruce W. and Lavada P. (Mock) Mock. 
Mr. Mock was employed at Thiele Industries, Windber, with 10 years of
service. He was a 1961 graduate of
Chestnut Ridge High School. Mrs. Mock was an Army veteran. He was a member of
the
Rininger-Hartle post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Mock enjoyed reading,
hunting and stock car racing. Surviving are two brothers: Dwight of Claysburg
and Jim of Alum Bank; and two sisters: Shirley Wolfhope of Manns Choice and
Phyllis of Bedford. Friends will be received from

Mrs. Mary Katherine (Cramer) Kirby,50, Port St. Lucie, FL, formerly of Lilly,
died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Hospice of The Treasure Coast, Fort
Pierce, FL. She was born Aug. 11, 1949, in Altoona, the daughter of Michael
W. and Mildred (Hooder) Cramer. Her father preceded her in death. Mrs. Kirby
had been employed as supervisor for dietary services at Martin Memorial
Hospital, Stewart, FL, for many years. She was a 1967 graduate of Penn
Cambria High School.
Mrs. Kirby was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1969
to 1975. Surviving are her mother of Lilly; six sisters: Elizabeth Olsick in
Michigan, Mildred Wade of
Dallastown, Janet Lesher in Ohio, Judith of  Orlando, FL, and Patricia and
Deborah Michaela,
both of Lilly; and three brothers: Ernie in Michigan, Thomas of Cresson and
