Sister Mary Salome Michaels 
Sister Mary Salome Michaels, 88, McAuley Hall, 
Cresson, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. She was born
Raphael Michaels October 24, 1910, in Johnstown, the daughter of the late
Thomas and Mary Harris (Visosky) Michaels. Sister Michaels entered the
Religious Sisters of Mercy in Cresson September 8, 1931, and she professed
her first vows March 24, 1934. She graduated from College Misericordia with a
degree in education. She did graduate work at Notre Dame University Sister
Michaels retired in 1982 after teaching at elementary and secondary   schools
in the Pittsburgh and Altoona-Johnstown Catholic dioceses for 50 years.  She 
also  taught  piano lessons for 30 years. Surviving are a sister, Imelda
Flegal in Florida, and two brothers: the Rev. Emmett in Virginia and Stephen
of Hollidaysburg Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. Monday at McAuley Hall, Cresson. SALOME _ A funeral Mass for
Sister Mary  Salome Michaels, McAuley Hall, Cresson, will be celebrated at 4
p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Mount Aloysius College, Cresson,
with the  Rev.  Msgr. Michael  E. Servinsky,  nephew of  the deceased,
officiating. Committal will  be  at  Sisters of Mercy Cemetery Friends will
be received from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday at McAuley
Hall, Cresson, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 7 p.m. tonight.
Memorial contributions in memory of Sister Michaels may be made to the
Retirement Fund, Sisters of Mercy, P.O. Box 369, Dallas, Pa, 18612. Sister
Michaels was preceded in death by three sisters: Mary Toole, Velma Servinsky
and Eleanor Hook; and two brothers: Francis and John David. She also is
survived by a brother-in-law, John Hook; two sisters-in-law: Kay and Sylvia

Verna I. Shoenfelt 
Verna I. Shoenfelt, 82, Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg,
formerly of McKee, East Freedom RD, died Thursday afternoon, August 19, 1999,
at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. She was born Feb. 12, 1917, at East Freedom
RD, the daughter of George and Annie (Dodson) Glass. She married Fred T.
Shoenfelt April 11, 1936, in Cumberland, MD. Mrs. Shoenfelt enjoyed quilting,
platting rugs and flowers. Surviving are her husband of Morrisons Cove Home;
four daughters: Sonja Burket of Martinsburg RD, Betty L. May of New Freedom
and Jennifer Yingling and Nanette Meck, both of Roaring Spring; two sons:
Fred T. of Blue Knob and Frank L. of Martinsburg; two sisters: Betty Nale and
Nellie Snyder, both of Claysburg; a brother, Thomas of Claysburg; 19
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shoenfelt was preceded in
death by a son, Joseph W, December 2, 1993. There will be no public viewing.

-Scripture services for Verna I. Shoenfelt of Morrisons Cove Home,

Claycomb correction 
Mary K. Claycomb, 75, Box 9, Claysburg, who died
Thursday, August 19, was preceded in death by a son, John William. His name
was omitted by the funeral home.

Arvilla L. Keagy 
Arvilla L. Keagy, 94, 429 S. Market Street, Martinsburg,
formerly of Woodbury RD, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, at Morrisons Cove
Home, Martinsburg, following a brief illness. She was born September 14,
1904, in Ogallah, KS, the daughter of the late Elmer and Jessie (Saunders)
Brant. She married Frank B. Keagy Sr.  September 4, 1924, in Ogallah. He died
May 7, 1985. Mrs. Keagy was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church, Roaring
Spring. Surviving are three daughters: Lula B. Mellott of Woodbury RD,
Darlene Dimond of Martinsburg and  Mary  A.  Lamborn  of Alexandria; a son,
Frank Jr. of Kansas City, KS; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to
9 p.m. Monday at S. Gerald Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury, and 10 to 11 a.m.
Tuesday at Faith Assembly of God Church, Roaring Spring. KEAGY- Funeral
services for Arvilla L. Keagy, 429 S. Market Street, Martinsburg, formerly of
Woodbury RD, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Assembly of God Church,
Roaring Spring, with the Rev. Anthony Baker officiating. Interment will be at
Dry Hill Cemetery, Woodbury RD. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to
9 p.m. Monday at S. Gerald Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury, and 10 to 11 a.m.
Tuesday at the church. Mrs. Keagy also was preceded in death by a brother,

Max R. Haubert 
Max R. Haubert, 86, McAlisterville, formerly of Brookline
Convalescent Rest Home, Mifflintown RR 1, died Friday morning, August 20,
1999, at Lewistown Hospital. He was born November 22, 1912, in East Salem,
the son of the late Harry J. and H. Pearl (Roper) Haubert. He married Hazel
M. Elsasser Feb. 18, 1933. Mr. Haubert was a member of East Salem United
Methodist Church. He retired as a lifelong farmer in Cocolamus in 1978,
raising dairy cattle, chickens and grain. Prior to that, he was a tenant
farmer in Beaver Springs and did sharecrop farming in Maze, Van Wert and East
Salem. Mr. Haubert was a member of the East Salem Rod and Gun Club and the
Eastern Milk Producers Association. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan,
coin collector and deer hunter. Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Betty
Miller of Richfield,  Julia A. Bean  of Henrietta, NY, and Bonnie M. Belis of
Altoona; four sons: Harry M. and Dale H., both of Lima, NY, and James W. and
Robert L., both of McAlisterville; a sister, Loise of Thompsontown; 12
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 7

Eleanor V. McCloskey,  85, Epworth Manor, Tyrone,
formerly of Skelp, Box 475, Altoona RD 3, died Saturday afternoon, August 21,

Margaret M. Klausman 
Margaret M. Klausman, 82, 403 E. Logan Avenue, died
Friday, August 20, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following an
extended illness. She was born August 5, 1917, in Newcastle, England, the
daughter of the late William and Margaret (Walsh) Gibson.  She married
William John Klausman July 11, 1963, in Cleveland. Mrs. Klausman was a
homemaker. She enjoyed cooking. Surviving are her husband; two daughters:
Margaret Dietz and Betty J. Polomsky,  both of Cleveland; a son, Edward Dietz
of Cleveland; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Friends will be
received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday at The Stevens Mortuary Inc.
KLAUSMAN _ The funeral of Margaret M. Klausman, 403 E. Logan Avenue, will be
held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stevens Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Father
Robert Neugebauer officiating. Committal will  be  at  Calvary  Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at The Stevens
Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Avenue, Altoona. The family requests contributions
be made by giving blood to the American Red Cross. Mrs. Klausman was preceded

Benton Joseph Miller 
Benton Joseph Miller, infant son of Tom and Betsy
(O'Connor) Miller, 911 27th Avenue, died shortly after birth Thursday, August
19,1999, at Altoona Hospital. Surviving are a sister, Stacey Lynn, at home; a
brother, Taylor James, at home; and his grandmothers, Louise Benton Miller
and Betty O'Connor, both of Altoona. There will be no public visitation.
Arrangements by The Stevens Mortuary Inc. MILLER _ A memorial service for
Benton Joseph Miller, 911 27th Avenue, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at First
Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Kiloski officiating. Interment will be at
made Blair Memorial Park. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements by

Helen M. Donoway 
Helen M. Donoway, 75, Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg,
formerly of 207 Penn Street, died Saturday evening, August 21, 1999, at the
home, after an extended illness. She was born September 16, 1923, in Altoona,
the daughter of the late John and Georgie (Pressler) Carner. She married
Edward Donoway April 12, 1944, in Charleston, SC. Mrs. Donoway retired as
chief operator for AT&T/Maryland in 1965, after 15 years of service. She was
a 1941 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. Mrs. Donoway enjoyed collecting
antiques. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mary Weber in Rockville, MD;
a son, Edward in Silver Spring, MD; and a grandson. Friends will be received
from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Plank, Stitt and Stevens Funeral Home,
Hollidaysburg. DONOWAY- Services for Helen M. Donoway of the Lutheran Home at
Hollidaysburg will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Plank, Stitt and Stevens
Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery Street, Hollidaysburg, with Father John J. Palko
officiating. Committal will be at New St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends will be
received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Plank, Stitt and Stevens Funeral Home.

Eleanor V. McCloskey 
Eleanor V. McCloskey, 85, a resident of Epworth Manor,
Tyrone, formerly of RD 3 Box 475, Skelp, died Saturday afternoon, August 21,
1999, at the manor, following an extended illness. She was born April 29,
1914, in Altoona, the daughter of the late John N. and Edna Mae (Dow)
McCloskey. She was a 1934 graduate of Altoona High School. Surviving are 11
nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at
Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home.  MCCLOSKEY- Funeral services for Eleanor V.
McCloskey, a resident of Epworth Manor, Tyrone, will be held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday at Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home with Jerry Stumpf officiating.
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends will be received from 1 p.m.
until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. She attended the

Jessie M. Lasher, 93, Beverly Healthcare-Hillview, formerly
of 410 Caroline Avenue, died Sunday afternoon, August 22, 1999, at Hillview.

Jason E. Conrad, 28, Lot 4, Cross Keys Trailer Court,
was dead on arrival  at  Bon  Secours-Holy Family  Hospital emergency room,
Saturday evening, August 21,1999. He was born October 16, 1970, in Altoona,
the son of Rhodena Woods. He married Rebecca Moyer October 10, 1993, at the
All Faiths Chapel at Penn State Altoona. Mr. Conrad was employed as a sales
associate at Radio Shack, Altoona. He was a 1988 graduate of Central High
School, Martinsburg. Mr. Conrad enjoyed working on computers. Surviving are
his wife; his mother;  grandparents;  Homer  and Bernadine Glunt of Cross
Keys; and a brother, Kenneth Ritchey in California. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Liebegott-Fisher Funeral Home Inc.,

George L. Papson 
George  L.  Papson,  85,  29 Sherwood Avenue, Hamburg, NY,
formerly  of  Carrolltown,  died Saturday, August 21, 1999, at Mercy
Hospital, South Buffalo, NY. He was born June 7, 1914, in Bakerton, the son
of the late Andrew and  Mary (Bensko) Papson. He married Mary Jubas November
25,1939. She died August 25,1992. Mr. Papson retired from Ford Motor Co. as a
machine repairman after 26 years of service. He was an avid hunter and
fisherman. Surviving are two sons: James and Jacob, both of Hamburg; three
sisters: Mary Mack of Lindhurst, OH,  Susan Gregor of  Long Island, NY, and
Ann Kerchinski of Salon, Ohio; a brother, John of Carrolltown; and two
grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday

Calvin C. Cook 
Calvin C. Cook, 77, 535 New Street, Roaring Spring, died
Sunday evening, August 22, 1999, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. He was
born September 15, 1921, in Bedford, the son of Robert and Stella Cook. He
married Pauline Croft February 21,1947, in Pennbrook, Harrisburg. Mr. Cook
was a member of Bare Memorial Church of God, Roaring Spring, and the
Crusaders Sunday school class. He retired as a cutterman from the Roaring
Spring Blank Book Co. in 1983, after 43 years of service. Mr. Cook was a 1941
graduate of Roaring Spring High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of
World War n. Mr. Cook enjoyed painting and fishing. Surviving are his wife; a
daughter, Judy L. Horner of Bedford RD 4;   a   son,   Kenneth   R.   of
Hollidaysburg; three sisters: Freda of the Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg,
Irene Smith of Six Mile Run and Josie McKinnzie of the Hollidaysburg Veterans
Home; and two grandchildren. A son, Jerry L, died March 22, 1960. 'Friends
will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at J. Gary Thompson
Funeral Home, Roaring Spring. COOK _ Funeral services for Calvin C. Cook of
535 New Street, Roaring Spring, will be held at 11 a.m.  Thursday  at  J. 
Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring,  by  Pastor  David  S. Williams.
Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery,  Roaring Spring. Friends will be

Paul Henry Finnegan 
Paul Henry Finnegan, 68, King, died Monday, August
23,1999, at home. He was born December 1,1930, in King, the son of  Stewart
and Ada (Claycomb) Finnegan. He married Kathleen E. Davis June 29, 1957. She
died August 23,1999. Mr. Finnegan was a member of St.  Mark's  United 
Church  of Christ, King. He retired as a concrete finisher from New
Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. in 1996, after 42 years of service. Mr.
Finnegan was a 1949 graduate of Claysburg High School. He was an Army
veteran. Mr. Finnegan enjoyed hunting, fishing and growing roses. He was a
member of the American Legion, Claysburg. Surviving are two daughters:
Kimberly A. Woodring of Juniata and Jenine G. Berkey of King; two sons: Galen
P. of Claysburg RD and Eric W. of King; three sisters: Norma Berkey and Ella
Weyant, both of King, and Betty Claycomb of Queen; and seven grandchildren.
There will be no viewing. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home, East Freedom.
FINNEGAN _ Private funeral services for Paul Henry Finnegan will be held at
the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers and Pastor Bruce
Whalen officiating: Interment will be at St. Mark's Cemetery There will be
nor viewing. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home, East Freedom. He was
preceded in death by three brothers: Tom Colebaugh, Johnny Finnegan and Dale

King, died Monday, August 23,1999, at home. She was born February 4, 1939, in
Weyant, the daughter of Charles and Elsie (Harbaugh) Davis. She married Paul
H. Finnegan June 29, 1957. He died August 23,1999.  Mrs. Finnegan was a
member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ, King. She was a homemaker. Mrs.
Finnegan was a graduate of Bedford High School. She enjoyed country music and
concerts. Surviving are two daughters: Kimberly A. Woodring of Juniata and
Jenine G. Berkey of King; two sons: Galen P. of Claysburg RD and Eric W of
King; a sister, Dorothy Stiffler of Weyant; three brothers: Norman of
Pleasantville, Ronald of York and Dale of Weyant; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs.  Margaret  E.  Illig,  89, Spangler, died Monday,
August 23, 1999, at HAIDA Manor, Hastings. She was born October 11, 1909, in
Nicktown, the daughter of Peter and Ellen (Lanzendorfer) Smith. She married
Aelred Illig. He died November 23,1943. Mrs. Illig was a member of St.
Nicholas Catholic Church, Nicktown, a former member of St. Patrick Catholic
Church, Spangler, and a member of the Legion of Mary and the Miraculous Medal
Association. Surviving are two daughters: Armelda Gamrat of Carrolltown and
Judy Bearer of Ebensburg; two sons: Robert in North Carolina and Patrick of
Patton; a sister, Leona Weiland of Nicktown; 14 grandchildren; and 15
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; and an

Charles E. Dotts Jr., 61, Irvona, died Sunday, August
22, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. He was born March 17, 1938, in Irvona, the son
of the late Charles E. Sr. and Marion (Kline) Dotts. He was twice married. He
first married Naomi Carney. He then married Dolores Plants. She died in 1995.
Mr. Dotts was a salesman for Philipsburg True Value. He was a social member of
the Coalport Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Coalport Moose and
the Croation Club of Smoke Run. Surviving are a son, Duane of Morrisdale; two
brothers: Merrill Dotts of Niagara Falls, NY, and Barrie Kline of Wilson, NY;

Ninth Street, Bellwood, died Sunday afternoon, August 22, 1999, at his
residence, following an extended illness. He was born March 18, 1929, in
Bellwood, the son of George T. and Olive  R.  (Bice) McClellan. He married
Anna R. Williams July 2, 1951, in Bellwood. Mr.  McClellan  retired  as  a
mechanic/laborer from Conrail in 1983. He was an Army veteran. Mr. McClellan
enjoyed hunting and walks in the woods. He was a member of the Bellwood
chapter. Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Bellwood chapter  of  the 
United  Veterans Association. Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Linda
L. Mirabella and Brenda L. Barley both of Bellwood, and Tina M. of
Bellemeade; three sons: David E., Daniel E. and Paul E., all of Bellwood;
three sisters: Helen of Tyrone, Alice Rinker of Bellwood and Ruth Zarychta in

Charles Glenn Lenz, 63, Littleton, CO, formerly of
Gallitzin, died Saturday, August 21,1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Denver.
He was born August 30, 1935, in Gallitzin, the son of the late Raymond Martin
and Aimee Mary (Gillen) Lenz. He married Patricia Geary October 17, 1959, in
Latrobe. Mr. Lenz was a member of St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church,
Littleton. He was employed as a representative for Pfizier Pharmaceuticals
Health Care. Mr. Lenz was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School, a
graduate of St. Vincent College, Latrobe, with a bachelor's degree in
education and a graduate of Indiana -University of Pennsylvania with a
master's degree in education. He was a member of Sons of the American 
Legion,  Gallitzin, Volunteer Firemen's Association of Cambria County and
vicinity and"  Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Surviving are his
wife; four daughters:  Anne Thumann of Littleton, Maureen Gall of Parker,
CO,   Carole   Hemmelgarn   of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Aimee Burrow of
Brandon, MS; two sons: Martin of Denver and James of Flowood, MS; five
brothers: Francis R. of Gallitzin, Monsignor Paul A. of Washington, D.C.,

He was born September 24, 1928, in Gallitzin, the son of the late Oscar and
Mary Matilda (Cox) Conway. He married Bernadette Vaughn April 27,1985. Mr.
Conway was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, West Orange, and a former
member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Gallitzin. He retired as a shop
worker from Owens of IL. Mr. Conway was an Army veteran. Surviving are his
wife; two sons: Gary of Deptford, NJ and William of Fort Myers, FL; a
stepson, John Ryan of West Orange; two step-daughters: Nancy Coughlin and
Robin Van Brunt, both of West Orange; three brothers: Clyde of Bradenton, FL,

extended illness. She was born November 9, 1922, in Altoona, the daughter of
William P. and Sussannah (Lindsey) Hoover. She married John H. Hansel July
14, 1942. Mrs. Hansel was a member of First Presbyterian Church,
Hollidaysburg, and a member of the Presbyterian Women Circle at the church.
She was a homemaker and a caregiver. Mrs. Hansel enjoyed reading, playing
golf and crossword puzzles. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Claudia
Shaw of Newry; a grandson; and two great-grandsons. There will be no public

(Anna) McDermott. She married Charles E. Ertter. He died February 8, 1998.
Mrs. Ertter was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and its Altar and
Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary. She was employed as a registered nurse
in the office of Dr. Donald G. Sharbaugh for many years. Mrs. Ertter was a
graduate of Miners Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the
Tuesday Night Sewing Club. Surviving are three daughters: Jane Nagle of
Carrolltown, Jean Persio of Ebensburg and Maxine Rackovan of Ebensburg RD;
three sons: Charles of Ebensburg, Mark of Philadelphia and Lynn of Ebensburg

married. He first married Virginia L. Witters. She died Jan. 18, 1982. He
then married Sara Jane (Taylor) Slippey  Feb. 12,  1983,  in Lakemont. Mr.
Livermore was a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish, where he served as a
trustee. He retired as a freight conductor from Conrail in 1976, following 39
1/2 years of service. Mr. Livermore was a member of the AARP, the Pontoon Club
at Glendale, Senior Citizens Bowling League and formerly was active with Meals
on Wheels. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife; a
daughter,  Geraldine  L.  Wilkinson  of Lakemont; a son, Marvin R. Jr. of
Altoona; two sisters: Ruth Thompson and Alice Cloos, both of Mercer; a
brother, Walter of Mercer, seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Idella R. Conrad, 88, Winchester, VA, formerly of San
Francisco and Smithmill, died Monday afternoon, August 23, 1999, at
Winchester Medical Center. She was born July 9, 1911, in Smithmill, the
daughter of the late Elijah J. and Blanche B. (Blair) Conrad. Miss Conrad
retired as a housekeeping  supervisor  from  the Presbyterian   Hospital,  
San Francisco, in 1976. She was a 1930 graduate of Reade Township High
School. Miss Conrad was a member of the  Rebekah  and  Pocohontas lodges, San

Anna Hasson 
Mrs. Anna Hasson, 97, Beverly Healthcare-HilIview, formerly of
Irvona, died Sunday, August 22, 1999, at the center. She was born November
16, 1901, in Hastings, the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Malin. She
married Joseph Hasson. He died January 19,1959. Mrs. Hasson was a Gold Star
Mother during World War II, with four sons serving. Surviving are two sons:
Michael of Oclar, FL, and Edwin of Butler; four grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and two great- great-granddaughters. She was preceded in
death by three  sons:  Philip,  Alan  and Arthur. Arrangements  by  Gibbons

Mrs. Doris V. Eagan, 78, 706 Shand Avenue, Lakemont,
died Tuesday evening, August 24, 1999, at her daughter's residence, following
an extended illness. She was born April 20, 1921, in Hollidaysburg, the
daughter of the late Sherman and Mildred (Stiffler) Wilt. She married James
G. Eagan June 2, 1962, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Eagan was a member of the
Church of God, Lakemont. She had been employed as a waitress at Woolworth's,
Altoona, and Heidelberg Country Club. Mrs. Eagan was a member and treasurer
or True Blue Sunday school class, and helped organize the Lakemont School
Alumni Association. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Carol Wiley of
Lakemont; two sisters: Betty Stienger of Phoenix and Miriam Kinsel in IN; two
brothers: Doty and Gary, both of Lakemont; three grandchildren; and three

Mrs. Wava  P. Wible, 81, New Smithville, died Wednesday, August
25,  1999,  at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. She was born in
Juniata, the daughter of the late Nevin and Pearl (Brubaker) Aller. Mrs.
Wible was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Allentown. She retired
as a waitress from the Pied Piper Restaurant, Trexlertown, in 1984 and had
been a waitress at Trainers Restaurant, Quakertown, and at the former Walps
and Village Inn, both of Allentown. Surviving are two daughters: Connie 
Glasser  and  Carole Dunton, both of Allentown; three sons:  Larry  of 
Texico,  NM, Gregory of Las Vegas and Dennis of Emmaus; three sisters: Myrtle
Kennedy of Reading, Geraldine Schoening of Jacksonville, NC, and Gaynell

born July 30, 1934, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Simon  F.  and 
Eleanor  M. (Hamsher) Ebersole. She married Wilfred J. Ickes July 1, 1957, in
Winchester, VA. Mrs. Ickes was a member of First Lutheran Church, Altoona. She
was a homemaker. Mrs. Ickes was a 1953 graduate of Altoona High School and
attended Shippensburg  State Teachers College. She was a member of Delphi
Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband; and a son, Steven

John G. 'Old Angler' Kimmel 
John G. "Old Angler" Kimmel, 78, Port Charlotte,
FL, formerly of Johnstown, died Monday August 23, 1999, in Johnstown. He was
born April 3, 1921, in Altoona, the son of the late Edgar and Catherine
(Staehr) Kimmel. He was twice married. First he married Madeleine McCabe. She
preceded him in death. He then married Gloria S. (Ale) Davis. Mr. Kimmel
retired as a bricklayer from the Johnstown plant of Bethlehem Steel Corp. He
was a 1939 graduate of Altoona High School. Mr. Kimmel was a Navy veteran of
World War II. He enjoyed fishing and boating. Mr. Kimmel was a member of
Ferndale Sportsman's Club, St. Clement's Bowling League and Johnstown Retired
Men's Club. Surviving are his wife; four daughters: Kathleen A. Cady of Cody,
NE, Nancy J. and Jaculyn M. Davis, both of Johnstown, and Caroline C.
Licastro of Bristow, VA; four stepdaughters: Sharon Torchia, Corrie Davis,
Kim E. Davis and Robin R. Swearinger; two stepsons: Richard Davis and Guy F.
Davis; a sister, Betty English of Altoona; two brothers: Leo of Greensburg
and Paul of Vineland, NJ; two grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and

Mrs. Jean L. Reffner, 71, 105 West Fourth Street, Emporium,
formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday morning, August 24, 1999, at her home. She
was born February 1, 1928, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Montrose M.
and Zorra F. (Miller) McMahon. She was twice married. First she married John
W. Wood in February 1947 in Altoona. She then married John M. Reffner in 1961
in Altoona. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Reffner retired from management of
GTE Sylvania in 1983, after 38 years of service. She was a 1945 graduate of
Altoona High School. Mrs. Reffner enjoyed playing cards and crocheting.
Surviving are one son: Teglund Wood of Altoona; two stepsons: John Reffner of
Altoona and Tim Reffner of Great Falls, MT; a brother, Michael of Altoona; two
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2

John Albert Dougherty 
John Albert Dougherty, 56, 1249 Johnson Avenue,
Marysville, CA, died Saturday August 21, 1999, at Rideout Hospital,
Marysville. He was born September 10, 1942, in Altoona, the son of the late
John A. and  Cora  Mac  (Delancey) Dougherty. He married Carrie Davis in
Newfoundland. Mr. Dougherty was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Brown's
Valley CA. He retired as a technical sergeant with the Air Force after 20
years of service, then was employed in civil service as a computer programmer
at Beale Air Force Base, California, for the past 12 years. Surviving are his
wife; a daughter, Darlene Gerving of Hallwood, CA;  a  son,  David  of 
Dallas, TX; and a brother, Timothy D. of Altoona. There will be no local

The Rev. George L. Hopkins, 82, Sebring, FL,
formerly of Six Mile Run  and Marklesburg,  died Wednesday morning, August
25,1999, at Lake Placid, FL, following an extended illness. He was born July
5, 1917, in Six Mile Run, the son of the late Edward and Mary (Foreman)
Hopkins. He married Martha C. Hetrick  April 10, 1937, in Marklesburg. She
died November 25, 1990. Rev. Hopkins was a member and pastor   of   First  
Southern Methodist Church, Jupiter, FL. He served as a pastor at churches in
Saxton, Reservoir, Renovo, State College and Atlanta and was founder and
administrator of the Jupiter Christian School. Surviving  are  a  daughter,
Patricia Smith of Pensacola, FL; a son,  the Rev. Leonard of Guadalajara,
Mexico; a brother, Ernest of Elizabethtown, KY; four sisters: Larue Hennessey
and Joan Jones, both of Waynesboro, VA, Maxine Reed of  Lewistown  and Beverly
Horne of Muncy, IN; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two
daughters: Elaine Hinton and Lorraine. Friends will be received from 7 to 9

John Joseph Patrick Reilly Jr., 76, Raleigh,
NC,  formerly of  Levittown, NY, died Tuesday evening, August 24, 1999, at
Raleigh Community Hospital. He was born March 2, 1923, in Bronx, NY, the son
of the late John Joseph Patrick Sr. and Elizabeth (Stevens) Reilly He married
Elizabeth L. Frank December 31, 1945,  at St. Michael's  Catholic Church,
Hollidaysburg. She died June 25,1996. Mr. Reilly was a member of St. Bernards
Catholic Church, Levittown, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society.
He  retired  from  Western Electric, New York, after 43 years of service. Mr.
Reilly was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.
He was a third-degree member of  the Knights of Columbus, Levittown, and a
member of the Telephone Pioneers. Surviving are two daughters: Deborah
Sanders of Dublin, Ohio, and Stephanie Galinski of Raleigh; three sisters:
Mary McTiernan in NY and Bernadette Collins and Barbara Wolcott, both in
California; a brother, Robert in California; and two grandsons. Friends will

and Sylvia (McGinnis) Grove. Mrs. Reed was a member of Church of Jesus Christ
of Latterday Saints, Hollidaysburg, where she was a member of the senior
homemaking group. She had been employed at Saf-T-Bak and in the home
health-care field for 10 years. Mrs. Reed was a graduate of Altoona High
School. She enjoyed crafts, reading and country music of the 1950s. Surviving
are her three daughters: Beverly Port of Altoona, Rose Butterbaugh of
Ellabell, GA, and Tricia of Greensburg; a son, David Port Jr. of Altoona;
three sisters: Barbara Snyder of Altoona, Gloria Durham of Six Mile, SC, and
Charletta Farmer of Wellington, Ohio; a brother, James McGinnis of Altoona;
and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Port.

Charles E. Koch,  86, Hollidaysburg RD 2, died
Tuesday afternoon, August 24,1999, at his residence. He was born July 30,
1913, in McAlevy's Fort, the son of the late William and Annie  (Ewing) Koch.
He married C. Blanche Bagshaw Nov. 23, 1944, in Evangelical United Brethren
Church, Canoe Creek. She died January 9,1994. Mr. Koch was a member of
Juniata Valley Gospel Church and the adult Sunday school class. He retired as
a self employed dairy farmer and was a Pennsylvania Forest fire warden for 60
years. Mr. Koch was a 1932 graduate of Hollidaysburg Senior High School. He
was a member of Blair County  Pomona  Grange  and Pennsylvania   and  
National Granges; a member of the former Interstate Milk Co-op; served with
the Blair County Conservation District for 16 years; and was treasurer and
chairman of the Blair County Farm Show Committee; and he was the
last-founding member of the New Canoe Creek Cemetery Association, where he
served on the board as chairman and treasurer. Surviving are a sister, Stella
Britcher of Mifflintown; a stepsister, Jean McGeary of Petersburg; and  a 
brother,  Henry  of Williamsburg RD. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and

Mrs. Dora Belle Clapper, 76, Valley View Home, formerly of
231 High St., Apt. 2, Williamsburg, died Thursday August 26, 1999, at Bon
Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born October
21, 1922, in Williamsburg, the daughter of the late Harry A. and Lilly I.
(Otto) Reigh. She married Frank W. Clapper October 21, 1944, in Williamsburg.
He died July 17, 1978. Mrs. Clapper was a member of Williamsburg Church of
God. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Clapper had attended Williamsburg schools. She
enjoyed crossword puzzles, embroidering and reading. Surviving are three sons:
F. Dennis of Williamsburg RR 2 and Robert A. and David N., both of
Williamsburg RR 1; a brother, Oliver of Westfield; a sister, Viola Riley of
Williamsburg RR 1; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. There will

married Rose A. Ambrose. She preceded him in death. Mr. Bednar was a member

Corp. Mr. Bednar was a Navy veteran. He was a life member of the Loy A.
Douglass Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Nanty Glo; a member of the  United 
Steelworkers  of America Local 2635; and of the First  Catholic  Slovak 
Union, Jednota Branch No. 421. Surviving are three daughters: Rosemary
Rossman of Altoona and Suzanne Stroble and Andrea, both of Williamsport; two
sons: Andrew Jr. of Indiana, Pa., and John T. of Nanty Glo; two sisters: Mary
Charney of Nanty Glo and Helen LaMonica of Niceville, FL; a brother, Francis

Mrs. Mary E. Zebroski, 81, 3300 Logans Ferry Road,
Murrysville, formerly of 896 Weatherwood Lane, Greensburg, and Green Avenue
Tower,  Altoona,  died Wednesday afternoon, August 25, 1999, at Forbes
Regional Hospital, Monroeville. She was born August 7, 1918, in Altoona, the
daughter of Francis J. and Mary A. (Lipple) Hanly She married Bernard J. 
Zebroski March 30, 1939, in Altoona. He died November 5, 1975. Mrs. Zebroski
was a former member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, and
Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg. She had worked as a
receptionist for Acacia Mutual Life Co., Washington, D.C., and the state of
Maryland. Mrs. Zebroski enjoyed bingo, knitting and crocheting. Surviving are
a  daughter, Patricia A. Taylor of Prescott, AR; a son, John J. of Export;

John J. Bonner 
John J. Bonner, 84, Fairless Hills, died Wednesday, August 25,
1999, at his home. He was born in Altoona and married Jane G. O'Hara. She
preceded him in death. Mr. Bonner retired from central maintenance at U.S.
Steel, Fairless Works, in 1976, after 25 years of service. He also was
employed at the Oxford Valley Municipal Golf Course for many years. he was an
avid golfer. Mr. Bonner was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are
three daughters: Connie Ingerson of Bel Air, MD, and Jan Beal and Patti Yoh,
both of Lefittown; two sons: Denny of Fallsington and Neil of Fairless Hills;
a sister, Patricia Keiler of Falls Church, VA; 11 grandchildren; and two

Mrs. Eleanor B. Dick, 79, Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg,
formerly of Roaring Spring, died Thursday morning, August 26, 1999, at the
home. She was born December 1, 1919, in Loysburg, the daughter of Abram R.
and Leila (Furry) Baughman. She married Elvie E. Dick February 18, 1941. He
died October 24, 1973. Mrs. Dick attended St. Matthew's Lutheran Church,
Martinsburg. She retired from the laboratory department of Nason Hospital,
Roaring Spring, with more than 30 years of service. She enjoyed knitting and
working with the Martinsburg Police Department Toys for Kids program. Friends

Mrs. B. Faye Mellot, 56, Phelan, CA, formerly of Altoona,
died Friday, August 20, 1999, in Phelan. She was born Decmenter 5, 1942, in
Altoona, the daughter of Harry and Mary Gertrude (Young) Mauk. Her father
preceded her in death. Mrs. Mellott was a member of Our Lady of the Snow
Catholic Church in CA. She had been employed as a secretary for Robinson
Construction Co., Victorville, CA. Mrs. Mellott was a 1960 graduate of
Altoona High School. She enjoyed horseback riding and loved animals.
Surviving are a son, Paul Jr. of Phelan; her mother of Altoona; a sister,
Donna Otto of Mullica Hill, NJ; and a brother, Harry Jr. of Mickelton, NJ.

The Rev. William B. Beers, 60, Grace Circle, Falconer,
NY, formerly of Coalport died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at St. Vincent's
Health Center, Erie. He was born August 21, 1939, in Coalport, the son of the
late George W. and Vida Eva (Brown) Beers. He married B. Eileen Rydbom June 1,
1969, at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Coalport. Rev. Beers was a
minister for Christian and Missionary Alliance Church for 27 years. He was a
1965 graduate of Nyack College, Nyack, NY. Surviving are his wife; two
daughters: Heather E. Dimitriadis and Trina C., both of NYC; four sisters:
Grace Shomo of Hollentown, Betty Hamilton of Lancaster and Norma Helsel and
Patricia Skebeck, both of Coalport; and a brother, Vertin of Altoona. Friends

Mrs. M. Grace (Beers) Lovell, 82, Westwood Village,
Enola, formerly of Blandburg, died Thursday, August 26,1999, at her home. She
was the daughter of the late Levi and Catherine Beers. She married David
Willis Lovell. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Lovell retired from the
Pennsylvania Medical Society and was a former employee of Mount Calvary
Episcopal Church, Camp Hill, and Berg Electronics, Etters. She was a former
volunteer with the Harrisburg Civic Opera, a former board member of  the
Westwood Village Condominium Association, a volunteer with the Keystone Area
Council Office of the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Wednesday
Club. Surviving are a son, Gerald L. of Enola; a daughter, Carol Lovell
Longenecker of New Cumberland; three sisters: Vivian Weatherby of Silver
Spring, MD, Betty Keith of Fort St. John, FL, and Lucille Matthew of
Fallentimber; three grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. Arrangements by The

David J. Menza 
David J. Menza, 86, 3300 W. Chestnut Avenue, died Friday,
August 27, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born
April 1, 1913, in Altoona, the son of the late Mattea and Rosa (Conzola)
Menza. He married Minnie DeBuon Nov. 28, 1940, in Altoona. She preceded him
in death. Mr. Menza was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He
was the owner of Blair Chemical Laboratories, had previously  taught 
chemistry  at Bishop Guilfoyle High School and had been a chemist with the
Pennsylvania Railroad test department. Mr. Menza was a 1931 graduate of
Altoona High School and a 1937 graduate of Penn State University. He was a
lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and a member of the
American Chemical Society. Surviving  are  a  daughter, Cynthia L. Krier of
Altoona; three sisters:  Florence  Nale,  Helen Mannino and Suzanne Villani,
all of Altoona; and two grandchil- dren. Friends will be received from 3 to

Mrs.  Dorothy H.  Belis,  74, Madera RD, died Friday
morning, August 27, 1999, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She was born
Aug. 11, 1925, in Beulah, the daughter of George and Mary Hensel. Her father
died m 1981. She married John Belis September 14, 1946, at Holy Trinity
Church, Ramey Mrs. Belis was a member of Immaculate Conception Church,
Madera, a member of the church Rosary and Altar Society, a volunteer for
Christ the King Church helping hands and apast member of Ss. Peter and Paul
Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ambridge. She retired as a clerical employee from
Sears, Plymouth Meeting, and also had worked at Sears at the Baden-Beaver
Valley Mall. Mrs. Belis was secretary of the Madera High School class reunion
committee, a past member of Baden American Legion Auxiliary and Choral Group,
past president of Marion Mothers Club and past president of the Baden
Elementary   School   Parent-Teachers Association. Surviving are her husband;
two daughters: Mary E. Novak of Sewickley and Noreen Latshaw of Beaver Falls;
her mother of Madera RD; a sister, Johanna Kosciolck of Roseville, MI; two
brothers:  the Rev. James of Westland, MI and George of Lombard, IL; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a

Mark Sam Smith, 33, Roaring Spring, died Friday morning,
August 27, 1999, at Roaring Spring, as the result of a car-pedestrian
accident. He was born Jan. 25, 1966, in Roaring Spring, the son of Robert E.
and Audrey J. (Smith) Smith. Mr. Smith was employed by SKF Industries. He was
a 1983 graduate of Central High School. Mr. Smith was an Army veteran. He was
an avid outdoorsman. Surviving are two daughters: Janelle K. and Rebecca L.;
three sisters: Shelby J. Wyland, Patti S. Altmeyer and Robin L. Dewald; a
stepsister, Christina M. Smith; his father; his stepmother, Toni A.; his

Anna S. Francis, 92, 208 Bell Avenue, died Friday,
August 27, 1999, at her home, after an extended illness. She was born May 31,
1907, in South Fork, the daughter of Pietro Impala and Maria DeGaetano. She
married Joseph F. Francis on November 26, 1925, in South Fork. He died
November 13, 1989. Mrs. Francis was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church.
She retired as a licensed practical nurse from State Hospital. Previously she
had worked at Mercy Hospital. Surviving are three sisters: Frances C. Francis
of Altoona, Rose Bellvia of Portage and Nancy Savino of Hackensack, NJ; and a
brother, Frank Impala of South Fork. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and

Wayne H. Zindel, 84, Epworth Manor,  Tyrone,  formerly  of
Hoover's Lane, Tyrone RD 4, died Friday morning, August 27, 1999, at the
manor. He was born April 6, 1915, in Snow Shoe, a son of Lemeul C. and Ivy
(Uzzle) Zindel. He married Catherine Agnes Fisher August 4, 1934, in Tyrone.
She died September 24, 1996. Mr. Zindel retired as an engineer of the Middle
Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1976, after 33 years of service. He
was a member of the Tyrone Benevolent an Protective Order of Elks, the Tyrone
Loyal Order of Moose, the Blazing Arrow Hook & Ladder Fire Company and the
Anderson-Denny  Veterans  of Foreign Wars Post. Surviving are three
daughters: Constance Trimble and Margaret Dickson, both of  Tyrone, and
Lorena Peters of Sandy Ridge; two sons: John W. of Tipton and Richard E. of
Pittsburgh; two sisters: Vivian Bowen of Levittown and Mary Lou Wilson of
Spring Hill, FL; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren;  and three
great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Zindel was preceded in death by three

James S. Biddle 
James S. Biddle, 70, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of
429 Third Ave., died Saturday morning, August 28, 1999, at James E. Van Zandt
Medical Center, following an extended illness. He was born July 16, 1929, in
Altoona, the son of the late James K. and Cora (Blackie) Biddle. Mr. Biddle
attended Grace Bible Church. He retired on disability as a car repairman from
Conrail in 1984, after 26 years of service. Mr. Biddle was a member of the
Bellwood Sports Club and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle
Association. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. Surviving are his
mother of Altoona; four sisters: Thelma Seilhamer of Lakemont, Marjorie Bartow
of  Duncansville, Cora Thayer of Greenwood and Nancy J. Spencer of Juniata;
and a brother,  Francis of Hollidaysburg. Friends will be received from 2 to

Anna M. Baker, 88, New Enterprise, died Sunday morning, August
29, 1999, at the Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, following a brief illness.
She was born September 20, 1910, in Curryville, the duaghter of the late
Scott and Flora (Burget) Fluke. She married Theodore W. Baker January 25,
1930, in New Enterprise RD. He died August 30, 1964. Mrs. Baker was a member
of New Enterprise Church of the Brethren, where she served as deaconess. She
enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing. Surviving are a daughter, Joyce Keiper
of Bedford; a brother, Leonard Fluke of Martinsburg; four grandchildren; and
eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by a daughter,

Emory H. Dell, 87, Hillcrest Apartments, Hollidaysburg, died

a brief illness. He was born Nov. 20, 1911, in Cass Township, Huntingdon
County, the son of the late James F. Dell and Blanche  Querry.  He  married
Dorothy Neary Sept. 11, 1938, in Hollidaysburg. She died June 4, 1973. Mr.
Dell retired from Owens Corning Fiberglass in Huntingdon with over 40 years
of service. He attended Juniata College majoring in accounting. He was a
member of Valley of Altoona Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Jaffa Temple
of Ancient  and  Accepted  Order Nobles Mystic Shrine, past secretary and
member of Mt. Moriah Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Huntingdon.
Surviving are a son, Robert M. E. of Wilson, New York; four grandchildren;

Robert DeDios 
Robert DeDios, 85, 1610 Columbia Ave., Tyrone, died Sunday
morning, August 29, 1999, at Epworth Manor, Tyrone, where he was a resident
since December 24, 1998. He was born February 21, 1914, in Clarksburg, WV,
the son of Secundino and Natividad (Menendez) DeDios.  Mr. DeDios retired as
a material cutter from Big Yank Corp., Tyrone, in 1979, after 40 years of
service. He was a 1935 graduate of Tyrone High School. Mr. DeDios was a U.S.
Air Force Veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal with the 27th Bomb

William Joseph Trexler 
William Joseph Trexler, 78, 6040 Stanton Ave.,
Pittsburgh, formerly of 2106 15th Ave., died Friday evening, August 27, 1999,
at his home. He was born October 7, 1920, in Altoona, the son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Leroy Edwin and Mary Catherine (Braun) Trexler. Mr. Trexler was a
former member of Church of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. He retired as a
pump operator from  Wilkinsburg-Penn  Joint Water Authority in Nov. 1990,
after 39 years of service. Mr. Trexler was a 1939 graduate of Altoona High
School. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a corporal. Mr.
Trexler enjoyed sports and big band music. Surviving is a sister, Dolores
Sadler of Altoona. Friends will be received from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at

Mark A. Burk 
Mark A. Burk, 33, Claysburg, died Saturday, August 28, 1999, at
Altoona Hospital. He was born August 20, 1966, in Roaring Spring, the son of
Donald I. and Karen Kay (Eicher) Burk. He married Tommi Lyn McCarty November
7, 1992, in Claysburg. Mr. Burk was a member of Queen United Methodist
Church. He retired from Fleming Foods, Altoona, in July 1999, after eight
years of service. Mr. Burk was a 1984 graduate of Claysburg-Kimmel High
School. He enjoyed football, softball and hunting. Surviving are his wife;
two daughters: Alyssa Maryn and Paige Allyn, both at home; a brother, Wade D.
of Roaring SPring; his parents of Claysburg; a grandfather, Donald E. of
Claysburg; and a grandmother, Euda Bella Eicher of Queen. Friends will be

Thomas Eugene Litzinger 
Thomas Eugene Litzinger, 66, 9 Terri Drive, West
Middlesex, formerly of Boardman, Ohio, died Friday evening, August 27, 1999,
at home, following an extended illness. He was born June 9, 1933, in Patton,
the son of the late Bernard and Gertrude (McConnell) Litzinger. He married
Pauline R. Gionfriddo October 31, 1953. Mr. Litzinger was a member of St.
Joseph's Catholic  Church, Sharon. He was president and co-founder of  Young
Galvanizing  Inc., Pulaski, with 26 years of service; was owner of Oak Tree
Land Co., a development of Oak Tree Country Club; and worked in the steel
industry for the past 40 years, previously affiliated with Syro Steel,
Girard,  Ohio,  and  National Galvanizing, Salt Lake City and Pittsburgh. Mr.
Litzinger attended Patton schools. He was a member and former board member of
the American Hot Dip Galvanizers Association; a member, former president and
for- mer board member of Oak Tree Country Club; a member of the Alliance of
Transylvanian Saxons, Youngstown, Ohio; and a member of the Neville Island
General Volunteer Fireman's Association Inc. Surviving are his wife; two
daughters:  Paula  DeLuca  of  Coral Springs, FL and Bobbi J. Frontino of
Shenango Township; four sisters: Florence  Descano  of  Altoona, Susan 
Williams  of  Somerset, Katherine Burkhart of Barnshaw and Rose Selfridge of
Patton; two brothers: Arthur and John, both of Clearfield; and two

Norman E. Groce Jr., 41, 2920 Va Oak Ave., died Sunday
afternoon, August 29, 1999, at Conemaugh Memorial   Medical   Center,
Johnstown. He was born April 9, 1958, in Altoona, the son of Norman E. Sr.
and Aloda M. (Gallagher) Groce. His mother preceded him in death. He married
Denise S. Bush September 20, 1985, in Altoona. Mr. Groce was employed as a
mover for Lytie's Transfer and Storage, Tipton, with 14 years of service. He
was a member of Brethren in Christ Church, Canoe Creek. Mr. Groce was a
member of Altoona Volunteer Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and
target shooting. Surviving are his wife; two daughters:  Heather  Solder of
Altoona and Amy of McConnellsburg; a son, Scott Kyler of  McConnellsburg; his
father of Altoona;  a brother,  Barry  of Altoona; and two sisters: Debra
Kunsman of Altoona and Robin of Hollidaysburg. He was preceded in death by a
son, Steven E., June 22,1997. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9

a stock foreman from DiSalvo Trucking Co., in California. He enjoyed golf,
fishing and bowling. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Dawn Singer of
Altoona; two sisters: Dorothy Wilt of Dysart and Jackie Davis of Fresno, CA;

Violet G. Matthews 
Violet G. Matthews, 80, 1314 Third Ave., died Sunday
evening, August 29, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following a
brief illness. She was born August 18, 1919, to Altoona, the daughter of the
late William and Eva (Link) Sanders. She married Eugene A. Matthews March 4,
1943, in Altoona. He died October 7, 1971.  Mrs. Matthews was a member of
Abundant Life Assembly of God Church. She retired from Mellon Bank In 1992,
after 22 years of service. Mrs. Matthews was a 1937 graduate of Altoona High
School. Surviving are three daughters: Karen Mountain, with whom she
resided,  Maureen Archey of Hollidaysburg and Regina Logan of 
Williamsburg;  two  sisters: Katherine Bell and Louise Moore, both of
Altoona; two brothers: James and Patrick, both of Altoona; three
grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Friends will be received from 2 to 4
and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home. MATTHEWS _ A

Ernest J. "Jeff" Mannarino, 37, 1009 Second
Avenue, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at home. He was born Novemeber 14,
1961, in Altoona, the son of Ernest and Peggy (Musselman) Mannarino. His
father preceded him in death. Mr. Mannarino was a member of Riggles Gap Bible
Church. He was employed at Lytle's Transfer and Storage, Altoona, and
previously had been employed at Warnaco. Mr. Mannarino was a 1979 graduate of
Altoona High School. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his mother
and stepfather, Peggy and Robert Moore Sr. of Alttona; and four sisters:
Pamela Cross of Ashville, and Michele Hofer, Anna and Brenda, all of Altoona.

Mrs. Margaret D. Walter, 94, Claysburg, died Monday
morning, August 30, 1999, at the Presbyterian Home of Hollidaysburg,
following a brief illness. She was born April 28, 1905, at Imler RD, the
daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Generva (Claar) Dively. She married John
E. Walter Novemeber 20, 1934, in Hershey. He died January 22, 1945. Mrs.
Walter was a member of Greenfield United Church of Christ, Imler. She retired
as a telephone operator from the United Telephone Co., formerly the Claar
Telephone Co., Claysburg. Mrs. Walter was a 1923 graduate of Hollidaysburg
High School. Surviving are three nieces: Betty L. Lewis of Imler, June S.
McGirk of Osceola Mills and Diane D. Panzer of Springfield; and two nephews:
Robert W. Weyant of Huntingdon and Benjamin F. Dively III of Alexandria.
