Patricia Ann Wicks, 76, 325 Blair Street, Bellwood, died Tuesday morning,
August 10, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. She was born March 12, 1923, in York,
the daughter of the late Hugh and Esther Mae (Graham) Wall. She married
Jerome E. Wicks March 25, 1942, in Winchester, VA. Mrs. Wicks was a member of
Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood. She retired as an assembler from
Veeder Root Company in Altoona with 15 years of service. During World War II,
she was employed at Middletown Air Base. Mrs. Wicks was a 1942 graduate of
Altoona Area High School. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and traveling.
Surviving are her husband; three sons: Barry E. of San Jose, CA, Bruce E. of
Bellwood and Stephen D. of Hollidaysburg; a sister, Cindy Siroky of San
Francisco; a brother, Richard Wall of San Francisco; 11 grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Thursday at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood.
WICKS- Services for Patricia Ann Wicks, 325 Blair Street. Bellwood, will be
held at 11 a.m. Friday at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood, with the Rev.
Robert J. Kennedy officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis
Township, Bellwood. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Wicks also is survived by an aunt, Jean
Emery of Mifflinburg.

Pearl M. Zembower
Pearl M. Zembower, 90, Beverly Heathcare Hillview, Altoona, formerly of
Hollidaysburg RD 4, died Tuesday morning, August 10, 1999, at the center. She
was born March 1, 1909, in Hollidaysburg, the daughter of Edgar and Elsie
(Hainsey) Bailey. She married Randall C. Zembower October 19, 1931, in
Hollidaysburg. He died February 6, 1977. Mrs. Zembower was a member of the
Hollidaysburg Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She enjoyed knitting,
crocheting and cooking. Surviving are two daughters: Olive A. Eicher of Queen
and Connie R. Norris of Hollidaysburg RD 4; three sons: Curtis A., Kermit D.
and King A., all of Claysburg; a sister, Cleona Stover of Tyrone RD 1; nine
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Zembower was preceded in
death by a son, Roger E. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m.  Thursday in J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring. 
ZEMBOWER- Funeral services for Pearl M. Zembower of Beverly Healthcare
Hillview, formerly of Hollidaysburg RD 4, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in
J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring, with James G. Finochio
officiating. Interment will be at Dry Hill Cemetery, Woodbury. Friends will
be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Mrs.
Zembower was preceded in death by four brothers: Elwood, Lemon, King and
Howard; and by three sisters: Arbutus, Alphia and Olive.

Richard D. Taylor
Richard D. Taylor, 59, H2 Maple Hollow Townhouse, Duncansville, died Tuesday,
August 10, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital. He was born March 6,
1940, in Orange, FL, the son of Robert and Rubbye (Coursey) Taylor. He
married Diana Tracy May 21, 1983, in Northport, NY. Mr. Taylor was the
general manager for The Antique Depot, Duncansville. He was a Navy veteran.
Mr. Taylor enjoyed antiques  and woodworking. Surviving are a daughter, Kami
of Key Largo, FL; a son, Keith of Modena; a brother, Robert of Lemmore, CA;
and five grandchildren. There will be no public viewing. Arrangements made by
Jones Funeral Home.
TAYLOR- Richard D. Taylor, H2 Maple Hollow Townhouse, Duncansville, is
survived by grandchildren: Tim Bowen, Autumn and Justine Eltringham, and
Katie and Michael Wooleyhan. There will be no public viewing. Arrangements

Marie Volk
Marie Volk, 86, 405 Magee Avenue, Patton, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at her
home. She was born January 24, 1913, in Liverpool, England. Mrs. Volk was a
member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton. She was a housekeeper for
many area priests, having worked in St. Lawrence and in St. Thomas in
Ashville. Mrs. Volk enjoyed reading, playing cards and crocheting. She was a
member of Irish Catholic Benevolent Union and of Legion of Mary, where she
served as historian. Surviving are two daughters: Alice Volk and Joan Volk
Hauret; two sons: Larry and Jerry; a sister, Pauline Perry of Belmont, MA; 11
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2
to 4 and 7 to 9 Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Homes Inc., Patton.

Rhoda M. Gunsallus
Rhoda M. Gunsallus, 80, 337 S. Second Street, Bellwood, died Wednesday
afternoon, August 11, 1999, at Altoona Hospital. She was born March 20, 1919,
in Alliance, OH, the daughter of the late Jesse Dayton and Margaret (Davis)
Miller. She married Byron E. Gunsallus April 12, 1939, in Bellfonte. Mrs.
Gunsallus was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She retired as a
cafeteria worker from Bellwood-Antis School District. Mrs. Gunsallus was a
member of Order of Eastern Star, Tyrone Chapter. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Rhonda R. Peoples of Hollidaysburg; three sons: Byron E. Jr. of
Harrisburg, Dayton R. of Bellwood and Timothy L. of Altoona; a brother,
Gerald of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
There will be no public viewing. Arrangements by Jon C. Russin Funeral Home,
Bellwood. 
GUNSALLUS- Services for Rhoda M. Gunsallus, 337 S. Second Street, Bellwood,
will be private and held at the convenience of the family at Jon C. Russin
Funeral Home, Bellwood, with the Rev. Robert J. Kennedy officiating.
Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township. Expressions of

Dorothy Chverchko-Hoover
Dorothy Chverchko-Hoover, 85, HAIDA Manor, Hastings, formerly of 408 Magee
Avenue, Patton, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, at Miners Hospital, Spangler.
She was born June, 29, 1914, in Wellsboro, OH, the daughter of Blair and
Gertrude (Chirdon) Durbin. She was twice married. First she married Andrew
Chverchko April 17, 1932. He died June 26, 1977. She then married Charles E.
Hoover December 27, 1980. He died January 5, 1992. Mrs. Chverchko-Hoover was
a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton. She enjoyed sewing. She
was a member of Legion of Mary Irish Catholic Benevolent Union. Surviving are
five daughters: Laverne Hoover and Carole Spacht, both of Patton, Joyce Knotts
of Ebensburg, Beverly Shields of Heilwood and Mary Fields of Roaring Spring;
three sons: Andrew Jr. of Painesville, OH, Victor of Nicktown and Jerry of
Richland; two sisters: Germaine Risban and Deanna Lundberk both of Cresson; a
brother, Blair of Cresson; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Stevens Funeral
Home Inc., Patton.

Viola P. 'Cuddles' Dickey (photo)
Viola P. "Cuddles" Dickey, 75, 243 Westland Drive, Greensburg, formerly of
Altoona, died Wednesday morning, August 11, 1999, at her residence. She was
born May 16, 1924, in Detroit, the daughter of Thomas W. and Lily Rose
(Wells) Freeth. She married William R. Dickey Sr. August 24, 1945, in
Brussels, Belgium. He died October 12, 1975. Mrs. Dickey was a member of
Fairview United Methodist Church. She was a 1940 graduate of Peckem Road High
School in Birmingham, England. Mrs. Dickey served as a telephone operator in
the Women's Army Corps, 3341st Signal Battalion from 1944 to 1945 in the
European, African and Middle Eastern theaters of combat where she attained
the rank of tech 5 sergeant. She enjoyed knitting, reading and dancing.
Surviving are three daughters: Leslie P. Hayden of Lansing, MI, Lynn M.
Wilcosky, with whom she resided, and Sharon L. of Altoona; two sons: William
R. Jr. of Hollidaysburg and Thomas M. of Altoona; five grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to
10 a.m. Friday at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Juniata.
DICKEY- Funeral Services for Viola P. "Cuddles" Dickey, 243 Westland Drive,
Greensburg, formerly of Altoona, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mauk &
Yates Funeral Home, Juniata with the Rev. Michael Leedom officiating.
Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park. Friends will be received from 6 to 9
p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home. Military
honors will be given following graveside committal services. Mrs. Dickey is
also survived by several nieces and nephews in England. She was preceded in
death by a brother, Thomas Freeth, and a sister, Doris Hutchinson.

Helen Lato
Helen Lato, 78, Ashville, died Tuesday August 10, 1999, at Altoona Hospital.
She was born December 23, 1920, in Ashville, the daughter of the late Wasko
and Catherine (Orlosky) Klem. She married Frank Lato June 19, 1941, at St.
Thomas Catholic Church, Ashville. Mrs. Lato was a member of St. Thomas
Catholic Church, where she sang in the church choir. She was a member of
Ashville Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of
America and the Altar Rosary Society. Surviving are her husband; three
daughters: Frances Binduga of Altoona, Carol Burrell of Spartanburg, SC, and
Christine Myers of Ashville; a son, Richard of Chest Springs; a sister, Mary
Beunier of Patton; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Friends
will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Gibbons Funeral Home,
Ashville. 
LATO- A funeral Mass for Helen Lato of Ashville will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Ashville with the Rev. James Bunn as
celebrant. Committal will be at St. Thomas Cemetery, Ashville. A vigil
service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a memorial service
conducted by the Ashville VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Lato was preceded in
death by three brothers: Charles, John and Joseph, and by two sisters: Julia
Herbert and Anna Loparo. She is also survived by her husband of 58 years,
Frank; a nephew, Tim Mayes of Clearfield; three sons-in-law: John Binduge,
Dean Burrell and Tom Myers; and by a daughter-in-law, Cathy (Eckenrode) Lato.

Dorothea 'Dot' Nash
Dorothea "Dot" Nash, 73, 1173 Skyline Drive, Blandburg, died Wednesday
evening, August 11, 1999, at her residence, following a lengthy illness. She
was born January 11, 1926, in Thompsontown, Juniata County, the daughter of
the late Leo M. and Estella A. (Moyer) Graham. She married Thomas A. Nash
June 1, 1944, in Bellwood. Mrs. Nash was a member of Hollentown Assembly of
God. She retired as an assembler from the former Sylvania Electric Co., after
14 years of service. She was a 1943 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School.
Mrs. Nash was vice president of the Reade Township Senior Citizens. Surviving
are her husband; a daughter, Judith C. Dieterle of Williamsport; a son, Thomas
D. of Blandburg; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and two
brothers: Gerald W. of Bellwood and Kenneth of Las Vegas. Friends will be
received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at McQuown Funeral Home and 12 to
2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hollentown Assembly of God Church.
NASH- Services for Dorothea M. Nash, 1173 Skyline Drive, will be held at 2:30
p.m. Saturday at Hollentown Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. David
Hammerle officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4o and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at McQuown
Funeral Home and 12 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hollentown Assembly of God
Church. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Charles, and a daughter-in-law,
Nancy. She was preceded in death by five brothers: James, Earl, Samuel, Robert
and Richard.

John Hill (photo)
John Hill, 92, the Presbyterian Home at Hollidaysburg, formerly of Altoona,
died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at the home. He was born June 17, 1907, in
Altoona, the son of the late Michael Dillon and Amy E. (Bush) Hill. He
married Jane Josephine Schmidt June 11, 1935. She died November 3, 1966. Mr.
Hill was a real estate agent and established John Hill and Associates.
Previously he was a real estate supervisor for the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Altoona High School and attended Juniata
College and the University of Maryland. He was given an award by the New York
Times for Excellence in real estate advertising in 1947. He was recognized by
the Blair County Board of Realtors and received a testimonial of appreciation
in 1991. Mr. Hill enjoyed literature, sports and hiking. Surviving are a son,
Jack of Los Angeles; three daughters: Rebekah Evey and Suzanne Egan Glenn,
both of Hollidaysburg, and Priscilla Daniell of Erie; 10 grand children; and
six great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Friday at The Stevens Mortuary Inc.
HILL- The funeral of John Hill, the Presbyterian Home at Hollidaysburg,
formerly of Altoona, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Stevens Memorial
Chapel, with the Rev. James M. Fleming officiating. Interment will be at
Alto-Reste Park. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday
at The Stevens Mortuary Inc. Mr. Hill is survived by 10 grandchildren: John
Hill III of Los Angeles, Karen Pffefer, Suzanne Swope and Matthew Evey of
Hollidaysburg, Beth Young of Nashville, TN, Robert Egan of Altoona, Emily and
Adam Daniell of Leverett, MA, and Zachary and Jesse Daniell of Erie. Mr. Hill
was former president of Blair and Cambria County board of realtors, served on
the Board of Directors of Reliance Savings Bank, Central Penn National Bank,
Altoona Chamber of Commerce and the Plank Road Businessman's Association. Mr.
Hill also served on the Board of Directors at the Altoona and State YMCA, the
Fairview Cemetery and the Juniata College Alumni Association. He served two
terms on the Altoona School Board. He was a member of Spruce Creek Rod and
Gun Club, PTA, the Mayor's Advisory Committee, the Blair County Historical
Society, the Blairmont Club, the Park Hills Country Club, the Park Hills
Country Club,  Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Johnstown, the
Blair County Game, Fish and Forestry Association and the Jaffa Shrine. Mr.
Hill also had a lifetime interest in language and poetry.

Dorothy "Deci" Katzen, 83, 155 W. Washington Lane, Apartment M5, Jenkintown,
formerly of Altoona, died Monday August 9, 1999, at Abington Memorial
Hospital, Abington, following a brief illness. Arrangements made by E.

Wicks correction 
Patricia Ann Wicks who died Tuesday morning, August 10 was married April 25,
1942. The date was printed incorrectly because of a Mirror clerical error.

Grace A. Moyer
Grace A. Moyer, 89, the Presbyterian Home at Hollidaysburg, formerly of
Valley Avenue and 58th Street, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at the home,
following an extended illness. She was born July 28, 1910, in Snow Shoe, the
daughter of Mark Dennis and Lillian F. (Rown) Mooney. She married Clarence L.
Moyer November 21, 1927, in Cumberland, MD. He died May 31, 1981. Mrs. Moyer
was a member of Schum Memorial United Methodist Church, where she previously
taught Sunday school. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Moyer enjoyed reading,
needlework and gardening. She was a charter member of the women's auxiliary
of the Kittanning Trail Volunteer Fire Company for 50 years. Surviving are
three daughters: Margaret Ruegg of Huntingdon, Alice Gallice of Tyrone and
"Kitty" E. Moyer of Ashville; a son, Thomas E. of Altoona; a sister, Ethel M.
Vaughn of the Presbyterian Home at Hollidaysburg; 15 grandchildren; 26
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by a son, Clarence L. Jr. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m.
today and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park.
MOYER- Funeral service for Grace A. Moyer, the Presbyterian Home at
Hollidaysburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Good Funeral Home

Priscilla Deffibaugh, 96, Donahue Manor, Bedford, formerly of Sproul, died
Thursday morning, August 12, 1999, at the home, following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 14, 1902, in Bedford County, the daughter of the late
Harry and Mary Finnegan. She married James Frank Deffibaugh. He died May 25,
1970. Mrs. Deffibaugh attended the Sproul Union Church. Surviving are two
daughters: Betty Raupach of Claysburg RR 1 and Shirley Finnegan of Imler; 13
grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a
son, Charles, in 1988, and a daughter, Annie Gates, in 1998. There will be no

Dorothy "Deci" Katzen, 83, 155 W. Washington Lane, Apartment M5, Jenkintown,
formerly of Altoona, died Monday evening, August 9, 1999, at Abington
Memorial Hospital, Abington, following a brief illness. She was born June 30,
1916, in Altoona, the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Katzen. Miss Katzen
retired in 1989 as a ladies dress store owner in Jenkintown that she owned
with her sister. During World War II, she was a dental hygienist at
Indiantown Gap Military Reservation. She was a graduate of Altoona High
School and attended Temple University. Surviving are a sister, Allyson
Epstein of Philadelphia; a brother, Harry of Berkeley, CA; and numerous
nieces and nephews. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements by E.

Helen Risban, 77, Kid Long Road, Gallitzin, died Thursday, August 12, 1999,
at her home. She was born July 9, 1922, in Ashville RD, the daughter of the
late Leo and Catherine (McConnell) Watt. She married Francis J. Risban
January 31, 1942, in Cumberland, MD. Mrs. Risban was a member of St. Thomas
Catholic Church, Ashville, and its Altar and Rosary Society. She retired in
1979 from the housekeeping department in Mercy Hospital, after 19 years of
service. Prior to that, she worked in the dietary department of St. Francis
College for several years. Mrs. Risban was a member of the Cresson and Chest
Springs Senior Citizens. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Carol McCarty
of Lilly; three sons: John F. of Cresson, Gerard of Spindley City and Gene at
home; two sisters: Esther McElheny of Ashville, Gerald of Salem, NJ, Elmer of
Sherrodsville, OH, Jess of Pennsville, NJ, and Donald of Loretto; 10
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mary W. Maidl, 90, Valley View Home, formerly of 1631 Bell Avenue, died
Thursday, August 12, 1999, at the home, following an extended illness. She
was born December 12, 1908, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Adolph and
Blandina (Beck) Koehle. She married Joseph Maidl November 22, 1952, in
Altoona. He died February 15, 1974. Mrs. Maidl was a member of St. Mary's
Catholic Church. She was the previous owner of Koehle's Hardware. Mrs. Maidl
attended St. Mary's School. She enjoyed bingo, crocheting and gardening.
Surviving are two stepsons: James of Beaver Falls and Walter of Middletown; a
sister, Hilda Shields of Altoona; and a brother, Charles in Altoona. Friends

Thursday afternoon, August 12, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an
extended illness. She was born April 11, 1917, in Altoona the daughter of the
late William and Edith (Brown) Lear. She married John T. Dean Jr. October 27,
1939, in Altoona. He died April 8, 1986. Mrs. Dean was a member of Grace
United Church of Christ. She retired as an elevator operator from the Central
Trust Building and was a foster grandparent. She was a 1937 graduate of
Altoona High School. Surviving are two daughters: Phyllis J. Francis and Cora
Mae Wolf, both of Altoona; a son, John T. III of Altoona; two sisters: Pearl
Swangren and Ruth Morder, both of Altoona; three grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lola, in 1941.

James L. Williams, 61, Dover, died Friday morning, August 13, 1999, at his
home. He was born February 28, 1938 in Hollidaysburg, the son of the late
Robert and Mabel (Gates) Williams. He married Irene A. Wagner. Mr. Williams
retired as a welder from York International in 1998, after 27 years of
service. He served in the Army. Mr. Williams was a member of the Pvt. Allen
J. Beck Jr. Spring Grove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and was a member of
United Auto Workers union, York. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Rhonda
L. McKenney of Enola; two stepdaughters: Teresa Hess of York and Laura Cesky
of Dover; three sons: Steven P. of Hummelstown, Dennis L. of Wellsville and
Edward L. of New Cumberland; a stepson, Brian Goodwin of Dover; two sisters:
Anna Wingard of Duncansville and Ella Clayball of East Freedom; five

Lois Batrus, 75, 506 IDA Tower, died Friday, August 13, 1999, at Beverly
Healthcare-Hillview. She was born September 7, 1923, in Pitcarin, the
daughter of Devro and Myrtle (Robinson) Wright. She married Joseph A. Batrus.
He died May 24, 1960. Mrs. Batrus attended Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She retired from Riverside Market in 1985, after many years of service.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Wasko of Harrisburg; two sons: Joel of NY
City and Dennis of Altoona; five grandchildren; and three

Barry Lee Butler
Barry Lee Butler, 36, Box 194 Kingsley RR 2, Susquehanna County, formerly of
Martinsburg, died Wednesday evening, August 11, 1999, in Brooklyn Township,
Susquehanna County, following injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He
was born June 26, 1963, in Roaring Spring, a son of Gene M. and Mary Fay
(Keith) Butler. He married Wanda J. Kensinger August 25, 1984, in
Martinsburg. Mr. Butler attended Martinsburg Church of God. He was employed
as an auto body technician at Melenco, Kingsley, for the past three months.
Prior to that, he was a owner operator of B&B Auto Body, Martinsburg RR 2 for
12 years. Mr. Butler was a 1982 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg.
He enjoyed NASCAR racing, auto body repair and hunting. Mr. Butler was a
member of the Shady Trail Riding Club, Woodbury, the Fort Fetter Riding Club,
Hollidaysburg, and the National Rifle Association. Surviving are two sons:
Matthew R. and Lee Scott, both at home; his parents of Martinsburg; five
sisters: Beverly A. Kennedy of Curryville, Donna L. Shultz of Richmond, VA,
Mary E. Redinger of Martinsburg RR 1, Erla M. Michale of Martinsburg and

She enjoyed playing the Pennsylvania lotteries. Surviving are a daughter, M.

14, 1999, at his residence. He was born June 19, 1925, in Gallitzin, the son
of the late Robert and Catherine (Weinzurl) Wess. He was twice married, first
to Mary E. Betlow. She preceded him in death. Then he married Adrienne
DiCamillo. Mr. Wess was a member of St. Bernadett Catholic Church,
Monroeville. He had worked as an electrical designer for R.T. Patterson Co.,
Allegheny County. Mr. Wess was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are
his wife; two sons: Jeffrey of Penn Hills and Michael of Tacoma, WA; a
daughter, Kathy Busch of North Huntingdon; a sister, Louise Burket of
Altoona; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant

Donald E. Fishell, 80, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Green Avenue
Tower, died Saturday afternoon, August 14, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family
Hospital. He was born January 25, 1919, in Altoona, the son of the late Earl
and Ella (Keller) Fishell. He married Margaret J. Harris November 4, 1984, in
Altoona. Mr. Fishell retired as a maintenance man from Green Avenue Tower in
1991. Prior to that, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Fishell
served with the Army during World War II. He attained the rank of corporal.
He enjoyed baseball. Surviving are his wife of the Hollidaysburg Veterans

are his wife; two sons: Donald M. of Altoona and Gary E. of duncansville; a
sister, Effie Walter of Claysburg; two brothers: Walter of Martinsburg and
Irvin of Duncansville; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. Friends

Mrs. D. Louise Cooper, 79, 500 W. 19th Street, Tyrone, died late Sunday
morning, August 15, 1999, at the home of her son, John, 1707 Columbia Avenue,
Tyrone. She was born September 28, 1919, in Grampian, the daughter of the late
Oscar and Zula (Lewis) Lewis. She married John T. Cooper April 27, 1940, in
Roaring Spring. He died April 1, 1981. Mrs. Cooper was a member of Tyrone
First English Lutheran Church. She was a 1937 graduate of Tyrone High School.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of the ladies auxiliary of United Transportation
Union, Excelsior Lodge, and Tyrone Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a son, John Thomas Jr. of Tyrone; a daughter, Janis A. Fraser
of Reading; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Friends will be

Charles J. Heintal
Charles J. Heintal, 81, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of 304 Third
Avenue, died Saturday, August 14, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital.
He was born March 9, 1918, in Altoona, the son of Edward J. and Margaret
(Bimeal) Heintal. His first wife Bertha M., preceded him in death. His second
wife, the former Arlene I. Henry, died February 13, 1998. Mr. Heintal was a
member of St. Mark's Catholic Church. He retired as a welder from Conrail in
1978. Mr. Heintal was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radioman
third class. He played saxophone with the Howard Becker Orchestra of Altoona.
Mr. Heintal was a member of Bavarian Aid Society, Swiss Rifle Club and Unter
Uns Society. Surviving are two daughters: Hellene Tamargo of Fredricksburg,
VA, and Anne Williamson of Altoona; a son, Paul of Derry, NH; a sister,
Dolores Benson of Seven Hills, OH; seven grandchildren; and a

Mrs. Geraldine O. Davis, 79, Harrisburg, died Friday, August 13, 1999, at
Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. She was born November 15, 1919, in
Harrisburg, the daughter of the late Arnold F. and Julie (Barley) Over. She
married Robert R. Davis. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Davis was a member of
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Penbrook, Harrisburg, and St. Paul's
(Barley) Lutheran Church, Bedford County. She had been self-employed as a
hairdresser. Mrs. Davis was a member of Arema Chapter, Order of the Eastern
Star; the American Business Women's Association, Susquehanna Trail Chapter;
the American Legion Auxiliary, Fry Village Auxiliary and North Harrisburg War
Veteran Home Association. She was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School and
a member of the Alumnus Club. Surviving are a son, Carleton R. of Harrisburg;
a daughter, Diane Illanes of Boulder, CO; two sisters: Hazel Hoover of
Martinsburg and Judy Danbeck of Altoona; a brother, Jerry of Martinsburg;
four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Friends will be received from

Mrs. Marguerite J. Garman, 91, Sonshine County Manor, Fallentimber, formerly
of Blandburg, died early Saturday afternoon, August 14, 1999, at the manor.
She was born September 19, 1907, in Blandburg, the daughter of the late
Charles E. and Flora M. (Kuhn) Bricker. She was twice married, first to
Walter L. Garman May 24, 1926, in Cumberland, MD. He died January 10, 1972.
Then she married Harry A. Thomas April 7, 1977, in FL. He died July 26, 1986.
Mrs. Garman was a member of Blandburg United Methodist Church. She had worked
as a clerk at the Martz Store, Blandburg, for 14, years. Surviving are two
daughters: Jean M. Gwin of Warren, OH, and Joyce L. Thomas of Dumfries, VA;
four sons: Walter L. Garman Jr. of Norfolk, VA, Charles L. Garman of
Huntsville, AL, Dale L. Garman of Warren and Earl L. Garman of Hanover; three
sisters: Vivian Bungo of Smithmill, Ruth Williams of Ramey and Edythe Garman
of Arlington, VA; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren. A son, Richard, preceded her in death. Friends

Peter A. Gerhart
Peter A. Gerhart, 72, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of 613 Walton
Avenue, died early Saturday afternoon, August 14, 1999, at Tyrone Hospital
emergency room. He was born September 22, 1926, in Altoona, the son of the
late Peter Sr. and Anna (Voggenreiter) Gerhart. He married Rose M. Pielmeier
October 4, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altoona. She died October 14,
1997. Mr. Gerhart was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St.
Stanislaus Brotherhood. He retired from the Altoona City Water Authority in
1991, after 30 years of service. Mr. Gerhart was a Navy veteran of World War
II.  He was a member of Bavarian Aid Society and its Bingo Committee, the
Unter Uns Society, Horseshoe Seniors, ALtoona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
and the Swiss Rifle Club. Mr. Gerhart enjoyed gardening, baseball and
bowling. Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen M. Bechdel of Pennsylvania
Furnace; two sons: Robert J. of York and Stephen R of Altoona; a sister, Ann
Marie of Altoona; a brother, Frank A. of Altoona; and seven grandchildren.

Woodrow W. 'Roy' Miller
Woodrow W. "Roy" Miller, 85, Box 8A, Williamsburg RR 1, Cedar Hill, died
Saturday afternoon, August 14, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following a lengthy
illness. He was born July 25, 1914, in Saxton, the son of the late James Oates
and Anna J. (Dick) Miller. He married Anna M. Haney November 27, 1935, in
Cumberland, MD. Mr. Miller formerly attended Cove Forge United Methodist
Church, Williamsburg RR 1, and Entriken United Methodist Church, where he was
a member of the Men's Choral Ensemble. He retired from the maintenance-of-way
at Penn Central Railroad in 1974, after 33 years of service. Mr. Miller
attended Entriken schools. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and gardening.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Rosamond M. Ake and Woodrene M.
Claar, both of Williamsburg, and Lily C. Dorman of Milesburg; a brother,
James D. of Williamsburg RR 1; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

H. Quarry June 18, 1924, in Cumberland, MD. He died March 27, 1994. Mrs.

Mrs. Mary H. (Yebernetsky) Bezill, 84, Houtzdate, died Sunday afternoon,
August 15, 1999, at her residence, following a lengthy illness. She was born
March 4, 1915, in Bucher, Madera RD, the daughter of the late John and Anna
(Hista) Yebernetsky. She married Valentine M. Bezilla. He died October 2,
1990. Mrs. Bezilla was a member of Christ the King Church Houtzdale, and its
Rosary Altar Society. She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of
America, St. Victoria's Court No. 646, Houtzdale. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters: Clara Tubo of Ramey and Joann of Clearfield; two
sons: Valentine of Hamburg, NY, and Ronald of Houtzdale RD; four sisters: Ann
Lieber of Carteret, NJ, and Suzanne Cooper of Hillsbourgh, CA; two brothers:
John of Linden, NJ, and Paul of Buena, NJ; seven grandchildren; and four

John Frank Morrissey
John Frank Morrissey, 85, Arco, ID, formerly of Tyrone, died Friday, August
13, 1999, at his home. He was born October 17, 1913, in Tyrone, the son of
Frank S. and Minnie (Migill) Morrissey. He married Catherine Dora Cupp March
17, 1932, in Cumberland, MD. Mr. Morrissey retired in 1979 as a salesman from
Blair Candy Co. and also had been a salesman for Morningstar Bread and Gardner
Wholesale. He also had been a butcher for Biggins and Heberling Store. He
graduated from Tyrone High School in 1933. Mr. Morrissey was a Navy veteran
of World War II, serving on the USS Lowndes in the Pacific Theater. He was a
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of the American
Legion and the Tyrone Sportsman's Association. Mr. Morrissey was an avid
fisherman and enjoyed pitching horseshoes. Surviving are his wife; a
daughter, Patricia Turnbaugh of Tyrone; two sons: John I. of Plymouth, MI,
and Michael of Arco; five sisters: Ruthe Davidson, Hanna Isenberg, Gladys
Raling and Margaret Harper, all of Tyrone, and Louis Blake of Philipsburg;
two brothers: Wilbur and Robert, both of Tyrone; six grandchildren' many
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be

Earl E. Conrad, 83, Box 782, Altoona RR 6, died Monday morning, August 16,
1999, at Altoona Hospital, following a heart attack. He was born June 8,
1916, in Altoona, the son of Anthony and Margaret (Weakland) Conrad. He
married Violet Greiner August 27, 1941. She died in November 1987. Mr. Conrad
was a member of  St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He retired as a welder from
the Pennsylvania Railroad with 40 years of service. Mr. Conrad enjoyed
baseball, football and camping. He was a third-degree member of the Knights
of Columbus, a member of Cesare Battisti and the St. Stanislaus Kostka
Brotherhood. Surviving are a daughter, Connie Kowalski of Altoona; a son,
Frank of Pasadena, MD; four sisters: Rita Mack and Theresa Edmonds, both of
Glen Burnie, MD, Pauline McIntire of Pleasantville, IA, and Betty Dobbins of

Mary A. Stemerick, 90, Benwood, WV, formerly of Pittsburgh and Pavia, died
Sunday, August 15, 1999, at her home. She was born April 12, 1909, in
Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late William and Pauline (Maleay) Stemerick.
Miss Stemerick had been a teacher in Catholic schools in the Pittsburgh area
and had been a nun with the Sisters of Mercy. She was a graduate of Duquesne
University, Pittsburgh. Miss Stemerick was an Army veteran of World War II,
serving as a captain. She enjoyed reading. Surviving are three brothers: Fred
of Pleasonton, CA, Martin of Cincinnati and Eugene of Pittsburgh. There will
be no viewing. Arrangements by Leslie Funeral Home, Claysburg.

Mrs. Isabelle A. Shuta, 74, 407 Elm Street, Lakemont, died Monday morning,
August 16, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following a brief
illness. She was born September 8, 1924, in Bellwood, the daughter of the
late Edward and Besse (Vandevander) Davis. She married Stephen J. Shuta April
23, 1950, in Altoona. Mrs. Shuta was a member of St. John the Evangelist
Catholic Church, Lakemont. She retired as an inspector from GTE Sylvania in
1984, following 41 years of service. Mrs. Shuta was a 1943 graduate of
Bellwood High School. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering. Surviving are her
husband; a son, Joseph P. of Duncansville; three sisters: Dorothy Jackson of
Berea, OH, Shirley Kessinger of Tyrone and Ruth Smith of Orange Park, FL; a
brother, Lowell of Lansing, IL; and two granddaughters. Friends will be

Marvin C. Leslie
Marvin C. Leslie, 86, Claysburg, died Monday afternoon, August 16, 1999, at
his home, following a brief illness. He was born March 17, 1913, in
Claysburg, the son of the late George H. and Emma Jane (Dibert) Leslie. He
married Reba M. Ickes February 14, 1948, in Robesonia. She died July 5, 1996.
Mr. Leslie was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Claysburg, where he served
as a councilman for many years. He was a licensed funeral director for more
than 60 years and was owner of Leslie Funeral Home Claysburg, since 1948. Mr.
Leslie was a 1932 graduate of Claysburg High School and a 1939 graduate of
Eckels College of Embalming, Philadelphia. He was a Navy veteran of World War
II and the Korean conflict, serving as a pharmacist Mate 1st Class. He was a
member, chaplain, past commander and past band member of the Claysburg
American Legion and a member of the Altoona chapter of 40 et 8 du Homme. Mr.
Leslie was a member of Juniata Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons,
Hollidaysburg; a member of the Jaffa Shrine Temple, ALtoona; and a member,
past president and legislative committeeman of the Keystone Funeral
Directors' Association, Blair and Cambria County Chapters. Surviving are a
son, Mark S. of Claysburg; and two grandchildren. Friends will be received
from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Leslie
Funeral Home, Claysburg, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ
lutheran Church, Claysburg.

The Rev. Mark B. Michael, 79, 2401 Second Avenue, died Monday, August 16,
1999, at the Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, following an extended illness.
He was born March 19, 1920, the son of Jacob B. and Elverna (Billman)
Michael. He married Mabel Newlin August 19, 1948, in China Grove, NC. Rev.
Michael was a member of First United Church of Christ. He was ordained to the
ministry of the Evangelical and Reformed Church (now United Church of Christ)
June 23, 1946. He served United Church of Christ congregations throughout
Pennsylvania, including the Greenfield Charge, Claysburg. He was
superintendent of Hoffman Homes for Youth, Gettysburg; Pastor of Devitt Home
for the Aged, Allenwood; and Minister of Education, Good Shepherd United
Church of Christ, Boyertown. He retired in 1980. For 13 year, he was
Annuitant Visitor for the United Church of Christ pension board in Penn West
Conference. Rev. Michael was a 1938 graduate of Lower Mahanoy High School,
Dalmatia, a 1944 graduate of Catawba College, Salisbury, NC, with a
bachelor's degree and a 1946 graduate of Lancaster Theological Seminary,
Lancaster, with a bachelor's degree. He enjoyed interior decorating,
architectural design and collecting clocks/antiques. Rev. Michael had been a
member of the Board of Directors of the Lewisburg chapter of American Red
Cross, the Claysburg Public Library and Improved Dwellings for Altoona, and
registrar and chair of the Stewardship committee of the Juniata Association
of the United Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife; two sons: Karl M. of
Clifton Park, NY, and Keith M. of NY; a daughter, Karen Gomez of Allentown;
and five grandchildren. Friends will be received after 2 p.m. Thursday at
Trinity United Church of Christ, Altoona. Arrangements by Musmanno Funeral
Home, Pittsburgh.
MICHAEL- A memorial service for the Rev. Mark B. Michael will be held at 2
p.m. Thursday August 19, 1999, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 711

Leonard J. Hopkins
Leonard J. Hopkins, 79, No. 4, Spring Drive, Martinsburg, formerly of Six
Mile Run and Baltimore, died Monday evening, August 16, 1999, at Nason
Hospital, Roaring Spring. He was born April 17, 1920, at Six Mile Run, the
son of the late James and Alice A. (Williams) Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins was
affiliated with Six Mile Run Church of God. He retired as a machinist with
the Martin-Marietta Aircraft plant, Baltimore, in 1985, following 45 years of
service. Mr. Hopkins was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are two
sisters: Yvonne Ritchey and her husband Ralph of Martinsburg, with whom he
resided, and Ruth Hoover of Pittsburgh; and a twin brother, Lester of

life member of First United Church of Christ. He retired as a fabricator from
the Crane Co., Duncansville, in 1974 after 22 years of service, and then
worked as a security guard for the Altoona Housing Authority. Mr. Campbell
was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran
of World War II, serving as a sergeant. Mr. Campbell enjoyed bowling,
sporting events and word shows. Surviving is his wife. Friends will be

Thomas V. Amalfitano Sr., 84, York, formerly of Blackwood, NJ, and Altoona,
died Friday, August 6, 1999, at his home. He was born August 8, 1914, in
Altoona, the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (DeNicole) Amalfitano. He
married Susan M. Cataldo. Mr. Amalfitano was a member of St. Joseph Catholic
Church and its Young at Heart Organization. He retired as a machinist from
the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1967, following 23 years of service. Mr.
Amalfitano was a member of the Galleria Mall Walkers Association. Surviving
are his wife of 61 years; a daughter, Josephine L. French of East Berlin; a
son, Thomas V. of Brogue; a sister, Lena  Docimo of Philadelphia; five

Mary K. Claycomb
Mrs. Mary K. Claycomb, 75, Box 9, Claysburg, died Thursday morning, August
19, 1999, at UPMC Lee Regional Hospital, Johnstown. She was born March 21,
1924, the daughter of William and Ruth A. (Wyant) Dibert. She married Irvin
Roy Claycomb in 1942 in Baltimore. He died in July 1965. Mrs. Claycomb
enjoyed fishing, traveling and flowers. Surviving are four daughters: Brenda
R. of Coulee City, WA, Cindy J. of Damascus, MD, Gloria A. Gonsman of

Mrs. Joan F. Glass, 75, Claysburg, died Wednesday morning, August 18, 1999,
at Altoona Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born February 11,
1924, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Ray G. and Genevieve (Williams)
Emory. She married Jacob L. Glass December 28, 1946, in Winchester, VA. He

Musselman. She married Daniel M. Heaton September 25, 1985. Mrs. Heaton was a

William L. Peck Sr.
William L. Peck Sr., 74, 208 Willow Avenue, died Tuesday evening, August 17,
1999, at his residence. He was born May 5, 1925, in Bedford County, the son
of the late Jesse L. and Stella P. (Pittman) Peck. He married Mary R. Miller
July 14, 1946, in Altoona. Mr. Peck retired as a self employed contractor.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Stella L. Bowman of Altoona, Eva M.
Fauke in CA and Tammy L. in VA; four sons: William L. Jr. of Jacksonville,
NC, Barry L. and Blake A., both of Altoona, and Thomas M. of Williamsburg; a
brother, Dean  in OH; a sister, Dorothy Watts of Altoona; several
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two
sons: Paul A. and Fred R.; and a daughter Kathy A. There will be no
visitation. Arrangements by The Stevens Mortuary Inc.
PECK- Memorial services for William L. Peck Sr. of 208 Willow Avenue will be

William J. Clabaugh, 75, Box 117A, Altoona RR 6, died Thursday, August 19,
1999, at Altoona Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born August 23,
1923, in Altoona, the son of Frank and Maude (Stiffler) Clabaugh. He married
S. Louise Hamilton in 1946 at Otterbein United Methodist Church, Juniata. Mr.
Clabaugh was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. He retired from
Automotive Supply Co. after 40 years of service. Mr. Clabaugh was a 1941
graduate of Altoona High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II,
serving in the European Theater. Mr. Clabaugh enjoyed golfing, bowling and
baseball. He was a member of the Bavarian Aide Society, Heidelberg Country
Club, and Sinking Valley Country Club and was scoutmaster for Bethany
Lutheran Church Boy Scout Troop. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Susan
Sipes of Altoona; a son, Jeff of Reading; and four grandchildren. Friends
will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at The Good Funeral Home
Inc., Alto-Reste Park.

Douglas I. Bonsell
Douglas I. Bonsell, 47, 14635 Monmouth Drive, Burtonsville, MD, formerly of
Tyrone died Wednesday, August 18, 1999. He was born August 21, 1951, in
Altoona, the son of the Rev. Edward O. and Annis (Dayton) Bonsell. Mr.
Bonsell had been employed as a senior territory manager of security systems
by Securities Dynamics, Falls Church, VA. He was a 1969 graduate of Tyrone
Area High School, attended Marion College, IN, and was a 1980 graduate of
Penn State University with a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Bonsell
was an Air Force veteran. Surviving are his parents of Tyrone. He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Candi, April 28, 1991. Friends will be
received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Richard J. Searer Funeral Home
Inc., Tyrone.

daughter of Howard Ralph and Florence Jessie (Boyles) Diehl. She married
Bernard J. Foster May 8, 1982, at Greenwood United Methodist Church. Mrs.
Foster was a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church. She was formerly
employed as a home-health aide by the Home Nursing Agency. Mrs. Foster was a
1969 graduate of Altoona Area High School. Surviving are her husband; a
daughter, Tessa Marie at home;  two sisters: Maxine C. Bauer of Altoona and
Vera K. Kline of Winter, TX; and three brothers: Paul R. of Erie, Robert D.

Robert M. Redinger
Robert M. Redinger, 75, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of
Philadelphia, died Friday morning, August 20, 1999, at Van Zandt VA Medical
Center, Altoona, following an extended illness. He was born April 10, 1924,
in Ardamis, the son of the late Glenn R. and Betsy (Houser) Redinger. Mr.
Redinger had been employed as a hotel manager in the Philadelphia area for 35
years. He was a 1942 graduate of Saxton Area High School. Mr. Redinger was an
Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed traveling and playing various
musical instruments. Surviving are his foster parents, Joseph and Ruth Wilse
of Saxton; and a sister, Grace E. Sell of Claysburg. Friends will be received
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste
Park.

Murray S. "Dutch" Lauer Jr., 21, 428 Ash Street, died Thursday afternoon,
August 19, 1999, at his residence. He was born March 3, 1978, in Altoona, the
son of Murray S. Sr. and Connie (Arnett) Lauer. Mr. Lauer was employed as a
mechanic at Five Star Suzuki. He was a 1997 graduate of Altoona Area High
School. Mr. Lauer enjoyed working on automobiles and motorcycle riding.
Surviving are his parents; a sister, Brenda Donaughe of Altoona; two
brothers: Steven of McAlevey's Fort and Joseph at home; and his grandmother,
Helen Craig of Youngstown, OH. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to
9 p.m. Monday at The Stevens Mortuary Inc.
LAUER- The funeral of Murray S. "Dutch" Lauer Jr. of 428 Ash Street, will be
held with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church,

John O. Miller
John O. Miller, 85, St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of Altoona, died Thursday,
August 19, 1999, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, St. Petersburg. Mr. Miller
was a member of Pasadena Community Church, St. Petersburg. He retired as an
administrator in the Insurance and Safety Department of St. Petersburg, after
22 years of service. He then worked from 1987 to 1999 at his daughter's gift
shop, Moon Shadow, at St. Petersburg Beach. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Penn
State University with a degree in business. He was an Army veteran of World
War II, serving as a technical sergeant and participated on a military
mission to Russia. Surviving are three daughters: Alexa Apple, K-Ann
Miller-McCleary and Jill, all of St. Petersburg; a sister, Emilie M. of
Seminole, FL; and two grandchildren. Arrangements by Anderson-McQueen Funeral
