Martha H. Baker
Martha Howe Baker, 87, Martinsburg, formerly of Snake Spring Valley, died
Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at Morrisons Cove Home.
She was born December 23, 1911, in Johnstown, the daughter of the late
William M. and Elizabeth J. (Wertz) Howe.  She married J. Henry Baker June
22, 1939, at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, Johnstown.  He died July 5,
1983.
Mrs. Baker was a member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, and
was a former member of Snake Spring Valley Church of the Brethren.
She was a graduate of Johnstown High School.  She graduated from Juniata
College in Huntingdon in 1933 with a major in Latin and English.
Mrs. Baker was a Latin teacher at Bedford High School.  She also was a
reading and language teacher at Everett High School and was coach of the high
school girls' basketball team.  She retired from Everett High School in 1973.
Surviving are three daughters: Susan Craig of Freehold, NJ, Lois Beebe of
Buffalo, NY; and Mary Dreibelbis of Millersburg; a son, Jacob of Woodstock,
GA; two sisters: Mary Robinson of Sebring, FL, and Ruth of Bridgewater, VA;
eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Friday at Dalla Valle Funeral
Service, Everett, and from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at Morrisons Cove Home.
BAKER - Funeral services for Martha H. Baker, Martinsburg, formerly of Snake
Spring Valley, will be held at 11 AM Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Morrisons
Cove Home, with the Rev. Floyd Mitchell officiating.  Friends will be
received from 7 to 9 PM Friday at Dalla Valle Funeral Service, Everett, and
from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at Morrisons Cove Home.  Memorial contributions can
be made to the Morrisons Cove Home, 429 South Market Street, Martinsburg, PA
16662 or to Juniata College Development Office, 1700 Moore Street,
Huntingdon, PA 16652.  Mrs. Baker also was preceded in death by a brother,
Joseph W. Howe, and by a grandson, Jesse Beebe.  She also was captain of the
Juniata College women's basketball team while in college.

John H. Keller
John H. Keller, 72, Victorville, CA, formerly of Altoona, died Thursday, July
8, 1999, in Victorville, after an extended illness.
He was born July 28, 1926, in Altoona, the son of Isadore F. and Sarah
(Drain) Keller.
Mr. Keller was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Victorville.
He retired as a heating shop supervisor with the former George Air Force Base
in Victorville after 18 years of service.
Mr. Keller retired from the U. S. Army as a staff sergeant after 21 years of
service, serving in both World War II and the Korean War.
He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as
district deputy for four years.
Surviving are his wife, Rose; a daughter, Mary Miller of Baltimore; a son,
Dennis of Manhattan, KS; a sister, Roseann Zillinger of Altoona; and two
grandchildren.
There will be no public viewing.
Interment was made in Riverside, CA.  Arrangements made by Kern Funeral Home,
Victorville.

Irvin M. "Jim" Kelley (photo)
Irvin M. "Jim" Kelley, 87, 1910 Second Street, died Wednesday morning, July
21, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, after a brief illness.
He was born March 19, 1912, in Altoona, the son of Herbert O. and Eva C.
(Sell) Kelley.  He married Nellie B. Wojcik March 2, 1932, in Cumberland, MD.
Mr. Kelley retired in 1977 from the Altoona Mirror as a linotype operator
after 33 years of service.
He was a graduate of Altoona High School.
Mr. Kelley enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.
He was a member of the Altoona Rifle and Pistol Club and the Bavarian Aid
Society, a former board member of Altoona Hospital, past president and past
secretary/treasurer of the local chapter of the typographical union and past
secretary of Deborah Heart and Lung.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Barbara E. Moran and Sandra K. Cox,
both of Altoona; a son, James A. of Allentown; eight grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Friday at E. Merrill Smith
Funeral Home Inc., Broad Avenue.
KELLEY - A funeral Mass for Irvin M. "Jim" Kelley, 1910 Second Street, will
be held at 10 AM Saturday, July 24, 1999, at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus
Catholic Church.  Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery.  In remembrance of
Irvin M. "Jim" Kelley, those who wish may make contributions to Jouberts
Syndrome, ATTN: Stephanie Frazer, 384 Devon Drive, Mandeville, LA 70448.  Mr.
Kelley also was preceded in death by a great grandson, Kelley Ryan Cox; three
brothers: Bertram, Dessler and Kenneth; and two sisters: Myrna Kaufman and
Alice Kelley.  He also was a past secretary/treasurer of AARP.

William Pusey Jr.
William Pusey Jr., 74, Glen Hope, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Altoona
Hospital.
He was born June 13, 1925, in Irvona, the son of the late William and Mary E.
(Johnston) Pusey.  He married Ruth Saline Hill april 7, 1947, in Hagerstown,
MD.
Mr. Pusey attended the Glen Hope United Methodist Church.
He retired from Swank Refractories, Irvona Plant, after 33 years of
service.  He also owned Pusey's Farm, Pusey Lumber Co., W. W. Trucking Co.,
and W. W. Parts.
Mr. Pusey served in the Marine Corps.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Marla Beers of Austin, TX; four sons:
William III of Columbia, SC, Wayne of Glen Hope, Warren of Ebensburg and
Wyatt of Spring Valley; three sisters: Mavis Green of Bedford, Mae Swanson of
Chicago and Marva Ryan of Utahville; a brother, Wilbert of Glen Hope; and
several grandhildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at Lloyd-Dimmick
Funeral Home Inc., Irvona.
PUSEY - Funeral services for William Pusey Jr., Glen Hope, will be held at 2
PM Friday at Lloyd-Dimmick Funeral Home Inc., Irvona, with the Rev. Darlene
Wiewiora officiating.  Interment will be made at Bell Cemetery, Glen Hope.

Wilda Rodgers
Wilda Rodgers, 82, Blair Tower, Altoona, formerly of Cresson and Ebensburg,
died Monday, July 19, 1999, at Altoona Hospital.
She was born April 20, 1917, in Cresson, the daughter of the late Joseph and
Maud (Reed) Steberger.  She married Samuel G. Rodgers.  He preceded her in
death.
Mrs. Rodgers was a member of Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are a stepson, James of Saginaw, MI; a brother, Russell S. in
Indiana; and two step-grandchildren.
There will be no public viewing.

RODGERS - A funeral service for Wilda Rodgers, Blair Tower, Altoona, formerly
of Cresson and Ebensburg, will be held at 10 AM Monday at Askew-Houser Funeral
Home, Inc., Ebensburg, with the Rev. Henry L. Shaffer officiating.  Interment
will be made at Lloyd Cemetery, Ebensburg.  She was preceded in death by two
stepsons: Robert G. and Ray W. Rodgers; a sister, Sally Kirkham; and two
brothers: Glenn and Jack J. Steberger.  Mrs. Rodgers is also survived by a
niece, Ronnie Steberger, in West Germany.

Gerald E. Treese
Gerald E. Treese, 69, Glenside, died Monday, July 19, 1999, in Silver Spring,
MD.
He was born March 17, 1930, in Altoona, the son of the late Earl E. and Helen
(Peightal) Treese.  He married Mary Lousie Sheridan.
Mr. Treese was branch manager of Girard Bank, now Mellon Bank, in
Philadelphia.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.  He also attended flight school in
Pensacola, FL, as a naval cadet.
Mr. Treese enjoyed traveling and gardening.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Elayne of Abington, Linda of Silver
Spring, MD, and Nancy of Glenside; and three granddaughters.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Friday at John R. Reed Funeral Home,
Glenside.
TREESE - Funeral services for Gerald E. Treese, Glenside, will be held at 10
AM Saturday, July 24, 1999, at John R. Freed Funeral Home, 124 N. Easton
Road, Glenside.  Burial will be private in Delaware.  Mr. Treese also is
survived by granddaughters: Megan, Caitlin and Lindsay.

John K. "Kenny" Brown
John K. "Kenny" Brown, 69, Oceanside, CA, formerly ofAltoona, died Sunday,
July 11, 1999, at his home.
He was born March 31, 1930, in Altoona, the son of Joseph T. and Edith
(Baker) Brown.
Mr. Brown retired in 1975 as a master gunnery sergeant from the Marine
Corps., after 30 years of service, serving both in Korea and Vietnam.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen; a daughter, Donna Teeter of Orange, CA;
three sisters: Dorothy Lafferty of Harrisburg and Jean Pufkla and Marilyn
Muhlfelder, both of Altoona; two brothers: Joseph Jr. and Francis; a
grandchild; and eight stepgrandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a son,
Ricky Brown.
There will be no public viewing.

Verna M. Cherry
Verna M. Cherry, 99, Grazierville, died Thursday morning, July 22, 1999, at
Tyrone Hospital.
She was born August 19, 1910, in Grazierville, the daughter of James B. and
Grace (Miles) Waite.  She married Howard E. Cherry August 24, 1926, in
Cumberland, MD.  He died April 28, 1975.
Mrs. Cherry was a lifetime member of Grazierville United Methodist Church and
was a member of the Win One Sunday school class.
Surviving are a daughter, Darlene Lamborn of Grazierville; a son, Delbert of
Buffalo, NY; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a
great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Ross.
There will be no public visitation.
Arrangements by Feller Memorial Home, Tyrone.
CHERRY - A private ceremony for Verna M. Cherry, Grazierville, will be held
at the convenience of the family.  Interment will be at Charlottesville
Cemetery.  Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the
Grazierville United Methodist Church, RD 4, Box 190, Tyrone, PA 16686.  Mrs.
Cherry was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Lily Ferris
Lily Ferris, 67, 3915 Broad Avenue, died Wednesday morning, July 21, 1999, at
St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness.
She was born August 12, 1931, in Boston, the daughter of the late George and
Melkeh (Kennan) Moses.  She married Sam Ferris July 23, 1950, in Taboura,
Lebanon.
Mrs. Ferris was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.
She was previously employed as a cook at various restaurants and at the
Altoona Area School District.
She was a member of St. George Ladies Society.
Surviving are three sons: Joseph of Springfield, VA, Michael of Troutdale,
OR, and Rick of Sewickley; a sister, Regina Salim of Taboura; and three
grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at the Stevens
Mortuary Inc., Altoona.
FERRIS - The funeral of Lily Ferris of 3915 Broad Avenue will be held with a
funeral Mass at 11 AM Saturday, July 24, 1999, at St. George Antiochian
Orthodox Church by Father Vladimir V. Belcher.  Committal will be at Alto
Reste Park.  Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at The
Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Avenue, Altoona, where a Trisagion service
will be held.  Mrs. Ferris was preceded in death by a brother, Mike.

William J. Forsythe
William J. Forsythe, 70, 35 Narberth Place, Southampton, NJ, formerly of 620
West Second Street, Williamsburg, died Thursday morning, July 22, 1999, at
Virtua Memorial Hospital, Burlington, NJ, following a lengthy illness.
He was born December 18, 1928, in Sunbury.  He married Nancy I. Herrold,
December 24, 1948, in Sunbury.
Mr. Forsythe was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsburg.
He retired as manager from the US Stamped Envelop Agency, Williamsburg, in
1985.  Prior to that he was employed with the US Postal Service, Washington,
DC.
Mr. Forsythe was an US Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
He enjoyed golfing, reading and sports.
Mr. Forsythe was a member of the Huntingdon Benevolent and Protective Order
of Elks, Williamsburg Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Sunbury Rescue and Hose
Company, a life member of the Bonner-Sollenberger American Legion Post,
Williamsburg, and a charter member of the Standing Stone Golf Course,
Huntingdon.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Yvonne N. Lucas of Murrysville and
Crystal L. Leaper of Mount Holly, NJ; a son, Francis R. of Tyrone; a brother,
Arthur of Harrisburg; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Lee Forsythe, in 1950.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 PM Saturday at Bolger Funral Home Inc.,
Williamsburg.
FORSYTHE - Funeral services for William J. "Bill" Forsythe of Southampton,
NJ, formerly of Williamsburg, will be held at 4 PM Sunday at Bolger Funeral
Home Inc., Williamsburg, by Pastor M. Suzanne Larson.  Interment with full
military rites will be at the Williamsburg Lutheran Cemetery.  Friends will
be received from 6 to 9 PM Saturday at Bolger Funeral Home Inc.,
Williamsburg.  Also surviving are grandchildren: Angela and Matthew Lucas and
Carla Beaver and Colin Leaper; daughter-in-law Evelyn Forsythe; and
son-in-law, John Lucas.  In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial
contributions be given for Heart Disease Research to the Deborah Heart and
Lung Center, Browns Mills, NJ 08015, or for Hemodialysis Research to the
Burlington County Dialysis Center, Lumberton, NJ 08048.

James F. Hammer (photo)
James F. Hammer, 65,2005 Seventh Avenue, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at Bon
Secours-Holy Family Hospital, of a heart attack.
He was born October 18, 1933, in Altoona, the son of the late Victor and
Kathryn (Wilson) Hammer.  He married Jill Diantoniis in December 1953.
Mr. Hammer was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He retired from DKF in 1995, after 39 years of service.
Mr. Hammer was a 1952 graduate of Altoona High School.
He was a US Army veteran, serving as a private first class in the Korean War.
Mr. Hammer enjoyed sports and music.
Surviving are his wife; his mother of Altoona; a daughter, Cynthia L.
Rubolina of Philadelphia; two sons: James J. of Altoona and Brian J. of
Irwin; and five grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at Santella Funeral
Home.
HAMMER - A funeral Mass for James F. Hammer, 2005 Seventh Avenue, will be
held at 10 AM Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Committal will be at
Calvary Cemetery.  Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at
Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.  Also
surviving are five grandchildren: Laura Rubolina, Nicholas, Scott, Madison
and Fallon Hammer.  Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Vera R. Hartman
Vera R. Hartman, 71, Beverly Healthcare-Hillview, formerly of 406 25th
Avenue, died Thursday morning, July 22, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family
Hospital.
She was born July 21, 1928, in Altoona, the daughter of John J. and Florence
Frederick.  She married Francis J. Hartman.  He died August 25, 1984.
Mrs. Hartman retired from Proctor Silex.  She had previously been employed by
Brownies Potato Chips, Boyer Candy Co., and Altoona Shoes.
She enjoyed bingo.
Surviving are four sons: Mike W., John J., David A. and Steve A., all of
Altoona; two sisters: Dorothy Christy of Alexandria and Wilma Gallagher of
Altoona; and 14 grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 11 AM to 1 PM Saturday at Vincent J. Good
Funeral Parlor.

John Francis Horner
John Francis Horner, 58, 4278 West Roundhouse Drive, Swartz Creek, MI, died
Monday, July 19, 1999, at Genesys Health Park, Grand Blanc, MI, following an
extended illness.
He was born July 14, 1941, in Altoona, the son of the late Joseph and Frances
(Madara) Horner.  He married Beverly Manges August 4, 1967.
Mr. Horner was a 1960 graduate of Linden High School, Linden, MI.
He was a member of the Roaring Spring Friendship Fire Company and the Central
District Volunteer Fireman's Association.
Surviving are his wife; a son, John of Flint, MI; and a brother, Vincent of
Grand Blanc, MI.
Friends will be received from 1 to 2 PM Tuesday at S. Gerald Weaver Funeral
Home, Woodbury.
HORNER - Funeral services for John F. Horner, 4278 West Roundhouse Drive,
Swartz Creek, MI, will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at S. Gerald Weaver Funeral
Home, with the Rev. Timothy H. Knauss officiating.  Interment will be at Dry
Hill Cemetery, Woodbury RD.  Friends will be received from 1 to 2 PM Tuesday
at S. Gerald Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury.  Mr. Horner was preceded in death
by a brother, Timothy.  Memorials may be given to the family.

Gladys M. Huber, 74, Fairless Hills, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, in Altoona,
following a brief illness.
She was born in Altoona, the daughter of the late Bernard J. and Margaret S.
Plunket.  She married Wilfred T. "Boots" Huber.  He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Huber was a Democratic Club Majority Inspector for the polls.  She
retired from the Simon and Schuster Company as a processor after 12 years of
service.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret S. Flynn of Mercerville, NJ; two sons: W.
Thomas Jr. of Lancaster and Bernie of Fairless Hills; four sisters: Marion
Maser and Jeanie Farabaugh, both of Altoona, Margie Cummins of Dundalk, MD,
and Sarah Jane Price in Florida; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Monday and from 8 to 9 AM Tuesday at
James J. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., Levittown.
HUBER - A funeral Mass for Gladys M. Huber of Fairless Hills will be
celebrated at 9:30 AM Tuesday at St. Francis Cabrini Church.  Committal will
be at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem.  Friends will be received from 7 to 9

Edwin S. Wilson
Edwin S. Wilson, 76, 2214 North Branch Avenue, formerly of Port Matilda, died
Wednesday afternoon, July 21, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital,
following a brief illness.
He was born March 13, 1923, in Port Matilda, the son of James H. and Hannah
(Laird) Wilson.
He retired from Nelson Nurseries as a nurseryman.
Mr. Wilson enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are a sister, Josephine C. of Altoona; her twin brother, Joseph W.
of Golden, CO; and two brothers: Mark W. of Altoona and Paul J. of
Livingston, TX.
There will be no public viewing.
Interment will be in Port Matilda.

Dorothea Benell
Dorothea Benell, 78, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, died Friday, July 16, 1999,
following an extended illness.
She was born October 19, 1920, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Edgar and
Mary (Weigand) Prough.  She married Dr. Theodore Benell.  He died July 19,
1982.
Mrs. Benell was a graduate of Altoona High School and the Mercy Hospital
School of Nursing.
Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Gerlach in California; a son, Craig in
California; two sisters: Jean Prough and Joan Stiffler, both of Altoona; and
four grandchildren.
Interment was made in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Ethel May Fleischer Burger
Ethel May Fleischer Burger, 91, 710 Montgomery Street, Hollidaysburg, died
Friday morning, July 23, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following
a brief illness.
She was born December 10, 1907, in Marysville, the daughter of the late Frank
A. and Emma Nora (Weibley) Fleischer.  She married Raymond A. Burger March 25,
1940, in Hollidaysburg.  He died November 24, 1984.
Mrs. Burger was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Bellwood.
She retired as office manager of Hunter, Campbell & Rea Architects in 1972.
Mrs. Burger was a 1926 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School.
She served as an air raid warden in Hollidaysburg during World War II.
Mrs. Burger enjoyed playing bridge, golf and bowling.
She was a member of Park Hills Country Club.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Sunday at Plank, Stitt and
Stevens Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg.

Daniel J. Carling, 71, Meade Street, Northwood, Tyrone, died Thursday
evening, July 22, 1999, at Tyrone Hospital.
He was born July 15, 1928, in Tyrone, the son of Augustus T. and Dora A.
(Emeigh) Carling.
Mr. Carling was a member of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, Tyrone.
Surviving is a sister, Naomi Barto of Warrier's Mark.
There will be no public visitation.

Pheda M. Crawford, 82, 212 Penn Street, Hollidaysburg, died Thursday evening,
July 22, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following an extended
illness.
She was born September 2, 1916, in Hollidaysburg, the daughter of the late
George H. and Mary Frances (McGee) Shock.  She married Leo Moyer.  He
preceded her in death.  Then she married Raymond N. Crawford Sr. in November
1967 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.
Mrs. Crawford was a member of First Church of God, Hollidaysburg.
She formerly worked at Shaffers Grocery Store, Hollidaysburg, and at Capitol
Press, Duncansville.
Mrs. Crawford enjoyed antiques.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters: Mona Garland and Donna Burkhart,
both of Altoona; two stepdaughters: Margaret Crawford of Altoona and Carol
Smith of Newry; two stepsons: Raymond Crawford Jr. of Hollidaysburg and
George F. Crawford of Altoona; a brother, George H. of Hollidaysburg; eight
grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous
step-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, William Moyer, in 1977, and a
stepdaughter, Jane Walters.

(Yingling) Dodson.  His mother died July 2, 1985.

Walter E. Etters
Walter E. Etters, 78, 310 West Sixth Street, Tyrone, died Friday afternoon,
July 23, 1999, at Tyrone Hospital.
He was born April 12, 1921, in Coatesville, Chester County, the son of the
late Benjamin H. and Margaret A. (Taylor) Etters.  He married Twila L. Snyder
January 14, 1957, in Winchester, VA.  She died April 3, 1991.
He retired from the maintenance department of Improved Dwellings for Altoona
in 1983, with service at Washington Avenue Apartments and Sylvan Acres in
Tyrone.
Mr. Etters was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European
Theater.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lynne Wise of Tyrone; a sister, Nancy Westover
of Augusta, WV; a brother, Roy of Taylor, MI; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Walter E. Jr.

Mike F. Finch Jr., 71, Smokerun, died Thursday afternoon, July 22, 1999 at
his home, following a brief illness.
He was born April 21, 1928, in Smokerun, the son of the late Mike F. and May
(Zonza) Finch Sr.  He married Mary Kashien April 16, 1951, at St. Mary's
Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey.
Mr. Finch was a member of Christ the King Church, Houtzdale.
He retired as a foreman from Associated Drilling, Osceola Mills.
Mr. Finch served in the Army during the Korean War.
He enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Mr. Finch was a member of the Freeberg American Legion Post, Houtzdale; the
Stephen Kandrach Veterans of Foreign War Post, Smithmill; the Croatian Club,
Smokerun; the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Bellwood; and Loyal Order of Moose,
Madera.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Donna Bungo of Harrisburg and Linda
Franchock of Stormstown; a son, Michael of Smokerun; a sister, Marion Hayward
of Osceola Mills; two brothers: Walter of Lancaster and Sylvester of Smokerun;
and four grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM today, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Sunday
and 8 to 9:30 AM Monday at Kruise Funeral Home Inc., Madera.

Rebecca Sue "Becky" Free
Rebecca Sue "Becky" Free, 39, Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Lakemont and
Canoe Creek, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, in Jacksonville, following
injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
She was born July 2, 1959, in Altoona, the daughter of Joseph M. and Louise
C. (Akers) Free.
Miss Free worked as a veterinarian assistant and also as an office accounting
and billing clerk.
She attended Lakemont and Hollidaysburg schools.
Miss Free served in the Army in Germany.
She enjoyed animals and the beach.
Surviving are a daughter, Amber Billard of Jacksonville; her parents of Canoe
Creek; two sisters: Deborah Shelow of Juniata and Linda Hileman of
Jacksonville; and two brothers: Joseph M. Jr. of Savannah, GA, and Fred of
Pembroke, GA.
Arrangements were by Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg.

J. William Laughlin, 52, 2610 Quail Avenue, died Thursday evening, July 22,
1999, at Centre Community Hospital, State College, following a brief illness.
He was born August 26, 1947, in Altoona, the son of Harold K. and Rose M.
(Chirdon) Laughlin.
Mr. Laughlin was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
He was director of the Altoona School of Commerce.
Mr. Laughlin was a 1964 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School.  He also
was a graduate of St. Francis College, with a bachelor's degree in accounting
and a master's degree in business.
He enjoyed golfing, reading and bowling.
Mr. Laughlin was a member of the Unter Uns Society.
Surviving are three daughters: Maria, Theresa and Christine, all of Altoona;
his parents of Altoona; five brothers: Donald F. and John R., both of
Altoona, H. Kenneth and Michael D., both of Seabrook, MD, and J. Patrick of
Sterling, VA; and three sisters: M. Eileen Civiello and Catherine A. Kline,
both of Altoona, and Bridget R. of Seabrook.

Mortuary Inc.

John S. Sweet, 32, Canton, OH, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at Mercy Medical
Center, Canton, following complications from a heart transplant.
He was born July 31, 1966, in Novato, CA, the son of Ed and Ann (Kochara)
Sweet.
Mr. Sweet was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Canton.
He was a biomedical engineer employed by Lucent Technologies.
Mr. Sweet graduated from Central Catholic High School, Canton, and from Case
Western University, Cleveland.
Surviving are a daughter, Laura in New Jersey; his parents, with who he
resided; a brother, Dan of Las Vegas; and his grandmother, Eileen Kochara of
Gallitzin.

William Reigh Wance
William Reigh Wance, 62, 2802 Washington Avenue, died Thursday morning, July
22, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born November 25, 1936, in Williamsburg, the son of Anthony Reigh and
Fannie (Hetrick) Wance.  He married E. Ann Orr May 9, 1964, in Altoona.
Mr. Wance was a member of Finleyville Union Church.
He retired as a contractor from Terry Curfman Construction in 1998, after 12
years of service.
Mr. Wance was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
He operated sound equipment for the Jubilee singers.
Mr. Wance was a member of the Red Cross Volunteer Disaster Action Team and
the National Disaster Service Human Resource Team.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Tina M. Settle of Hollidaysburg; two
sons: William E. and Todd A., both of Altoona; three sisters: Mae Andrews of
Cottage City, MD, Phoebe Richardson of Elk County and Marjorie Crawford of
Laurel, MD; two brothers: Jimmy Stevens of Mount Rainier, MD, and Shelby
Stevens of Lusby, MD; and seven grandchildren.

Margaret Elizabeth Buck, 77, St. Augustine, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at
Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
She was born November 19, 1921, in St. Augustine, the daughter of the late
John and Anna (Bodenschatz) Link.  She married Robert W. Buck November 30,
1946, in St. Augustine.
Mrs. Buck was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary
Society.
She retired as a sewing machine operator at Safety-Bak in Altoona in 1981,
after 21 years of service.
Mrs. Buck enjoyed playing cards.
She was a member of the Ashville Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxilliary,
and the Chest Springs Senior Citizens.
Surviving are her husband; three daughters: Deborah Umholtz of Johnstown,
Joann Naganuma in Hawaii and Darlene Earnest of St. Augustine; a son, Robert
of Hastings; two brothers: Robert of St. Laurence and Bill of St. Augustine;
and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna J.

illness.
She was born April 3, 1929, in East Freedom, the daughter of Albert E. and
Laura K. (Heuston) Simington.  She married Carl F. Butler June 11, 1948, in
Cumberland, MD.  He died February 15, 1985.
Mrs. Butler enjoyed playing bingo and traveling.
Surviving is a brother, Andrew, of East Freedom.

He was born December 11, 1974 in Altoona, the son of Charles and Mary
(Marabella) Flaugh.  
Mr. Flaugh was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
He was assistant manager at Hoss's restaurant of State College.
Mr. Flaugh was a 1992 graduate of Altoona Area High School and a 1996
graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor of arts degree.
He received awards in the Rehab Services Education.
Mr. Flaugh enjoyed football and sports.
Surviving are his fiancee, Jennifer Lioy; a sister, Christiana of Altoona;
his parents; and a grandmother, Mary B. Flaugh of Martinsburg.

Margaret E. McMullen
Margaret E. McMullen, 85, Nanty Glo, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Conemaugh
Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
She was born January 2, 1914, in Commodore, the daughter of the late William
and Maude D. (Huffman) Lambing.  She married Roy McMullen.  He preceded her
in death.
Mrs. McMullen was a member of the Nanty Glo United Methodist Church.  She was
a member of the church choir.
Mrs. McMullen retired as a unit clerk for Conemaugh Valley Memorial
Hospital.  She continued to volunteer at the hospital after her retirement.
She enjoyed collecting Hummel figurines and traveling to Canada.
Mrs. McMullen was a member of the Methodist Woman's Society, the Ebensburg
Rebakah Lodge and a former member of Business and Professional Women
Association.
Surviving are a daughter, Kay F. Simendinger of Nanty Glo; a son, Thomas M.
of Altoona; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Joan M. Ruck, 71, 22o East 25th Avenue, died Friday afternoon, July 23, 1999,
at Altoona Hospital, after an extended illness.
She was born January 10, 1928, in Fort Wayne, IN, the daughter of the late
Herbert P. and Helen M. (Reehling) Ruck.
Miss Ruck was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Hollidaysburg.
She retired as chairwoman of the science department at Hollidaysburg Area
Senior High School in 1985, after 30 years of service.  Prior to that, she
taught in the Wilkinsburg School District and in Logan Township.
Miss Ruck was a 1945 graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School, Indianapolis.
She was a 1949 graduate of Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN, with a
bachelor of science degree.  She was a 1954 graduate of University of
Pittsburgh, with a master's degree.  She did her post-graduate teaching at
Penn State, Fairleigh Dickinson University, NJ, and Indiana University of
Bloomington.
Miss Ruck was selected Outstanding Science Teacher by the Pennsylvania
Science Teachers Association in 1963.  She received the Outstanding Biology
Teacher Award by the National Association of Biology Teachers in 1972.  She
was honored as Outstanding Educator in the Hollidaysburg Area School District
in 1973.  She was named in the 1972 and 1973 editions of Outstanding Educators
of America and was invited to attend the Apollo 13 launching.  She was
selected by the Hollidaysburg Area School District to the Hall of Honor in
1982.  She was named a Paul Harris fellow by the Hollidaysburg Rotary Club in
1987.
She was a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers and the
Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association.  She was a past president of the
Hollidaysburg Area Education Association.  She served as regional director
and state meeting chairman of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. 
She also was a lifetime member of the Pennsylvania State Education
Association and the National Education Association.

Home, Hollidaysburg.
RUCK - Miss Ruck is survived by a sister, Elizabeth K. Ruck of the same
address.  Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday at Sorge Funeral
Home, Hollidaysburg, with Pastor David P. Haydu.  Interment will be made in
Alto-Reste Park.  She enjoyed the family dog, Sweetheart.  Memorial may be
given to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.  Miss Ruck was a member of
the Blair County Stamp Club and had many articles published in the Global
Stamp News.  She was a dedicated and caring teacher who tremendously enjoyed
communicating with her former students.

Theresa "Terri" Wakefield
Theresa "Terri" Wakefield, Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, died Frieday, July
23, 1999, at the home, following an extended illness.
She was born in Altoona, the daughter of the late Karl and Frances
(Thalhauser) Dambeck.  She married Harry K. Wakefield in 1962.  He died in
1980.
Mrs. Wakefield was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church.
She enjoyed traveling to Florida.
Surviving are a son, Lawrence of Altoona; a stepdaughter, Joanne of Tyrone;
five sisters: Mary Shade, Kay Robison, Frances Willnecker and Martha Otto,
all of Altoona, and Ann Mickel of Lancaster; two brothers: William of Altoona
and Lew of Roaring Spring; and two grandchildren.

Frederick B. Corte
Frederick B. Corte, 53, Portage, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Conemaugh
Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
He was born November 25, 1945, in Johnstown, the son of the late Fred O. and
Helen (Mackoviak) Corte.  He married Dianne Adams.
Mr. Corte was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Portage, where he
served as a trustee.
He was chief investigator for Cambria County Domestic Relations.  He also was
a security officer and firearms instructor for 15 years with Bethehem Steel
Corp.  He served as police firearms instructor for 25 years.  He was hunter
safety instructor for the Women's Handgun League.  He also was a former
school police officer and served as Portage Township supervisor.
Mr. Corte earned the distinguished expert rating in Pistol from the National
Rifle Association.
He was a member of the Portage Revolver and Pistol Club, the Portage
Sportsmen Association and Trout Unlimited.  He served for six years as an
assistant Scoutmaster.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Jennifer of Portage; a son, Jason at
home; and a sister, Nance Cassisi of Lilly.

Tuesday at Mark A. Serenko Funeral Home, Portage.

Margaret A. Jones, 87, Mount Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Clearfield, formerly of Ramey, died Saturday afternoon, July 24, 1999, at
Clearfield Hospital.
She was born in Smokerun, the daughter of the late Allison Leslie and Anna
Margaret (Snyder) Ball.  She married Harry T. Jones.  He died in 1980.
Mrs. Jones was a member of Smokerun United Methodist Church, where she played
the organ.  She also played the organ for Mount Laurel Nursing Center.
Mrs. Jones retired as a nurse's aid at Philipsburg Hospital in 1972, after 10
years of service.
Survivng are two sons; John T. of Irvona and Richard of Ramey; seven
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ann E. Moore
Ann E. Moore, 90, Holmdel, NJ, formerly of Laurel, MD, and Altoona, died
Sunday morning, July 25, 1999, in Holmdel.
She was born November 20, 1908, in Altoona, the daughter of the late John and
Elsie Brady.  She was married twice. First she married Wayne Worrell, Sr.  She
then married Edgar F. Moore.  Both preceded her in death.
Mrs. Moore was a member of First Baptist Church, Laurel, MD.
She worked for the Social Security Administration, the Navy Department, the
Walter Reed Medical Center and the Army Map Service, with more than 25 years
of federal service.
Mrs. Moore was a 1926 graduate of Altoona High School.
She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening and cooking.
Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn E. Sakowski of Matawan, NJ; a son, Wayne C.
Worrell Jr. of Punta Gorda, FL; a sister, Grace Thomas of Garden City, MI; six
grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Joseph E. Richey
Joseph E. Richey, 83, Hollidaysburg, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the
Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care.
He was born November 9, 1915, in Pennsville, the son of the late E. K. and
Mary H. (Kelly) Richey.  He married Mary E. Sochocki February 22, 1955.
Mr. Richey retired in August 1995 from building railcars for several
different railroad companies.  Prior to that, he had retired from the
Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission as a railroad safety inspector. 
Before that, he retired in 1976 from the Pennsylvania Central Railroad as a
master mechanic from the Allegheny Division, Altoona.  He was also a formerly
tax collector for Bullskin Township.
He was a 1935 graduate of Connellsville High School.
Mr. Richey was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a private.  Also
during his military career, he was a railway car mechanic for the Union
Pacific Railroad in East Warren, WY.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge in
Jamestown, NY.
Surviving are his wife and a daughter, Jenny Sue Arguelles of West Palm
Beach, FL.

Alice H. Ritchey,, 59, 425 Puzzletown Road, Duncansville, died Sunday
morning, July 25, 1999.
She was born May 9, 1940, in Whitesville, WV, the daughter of the late John
B. and Rose E. (Townsend) Bell.  She married the Rev. F. Ross Ritchey August
9, 1963, in Whitesville.
Mrs. Ritchey was a member of Foot of Ten Independent Bible Church,
Duncansville, where she taught the senior high Sunday school class.  She also
was a member of the church choir and sang in various church musical groups.
She taught school for 35 years.  For 19 years, she taught at Blair County
Christian School, serving as elementary supervisor and morning kindergarten
teacher.
Mrs. Ritchey was a 1958 graduate of Sherman High School, Seth, WV.  She
graduated from Bob Jones University with a bachelor of science degree in
elementary education.  She also graduated from Eastern Michigan University,
earning a master's degree.
She enjoyed flower gardening.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters: Tera L. Weaver of Allentown and A.
Nicole Byerly of Mechanicsburg; her mother of Whitesville; a brother, John D.
of Beckley, WV; and three grandchildren.

M Bernice Carmalt
Mrs. M. Bernice Carmalt, 101, Duncansville, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at
Presbyterian Home of Hollidaysburg.
She was born March 23, 1898, in Eddington, ME, the daughter of the late James
W. and Myra (Stover) Thompson.  She married Clarence Carmalt.  He preceded her
in death.
Mrs. Carmalt had owned and operated a nursing home in the greater Bangor, ME,
area for many years.
She was an artist who specialized in oil painting and was an avid
flyfisherman.
Mrs. Carmalt was a member of the Queen City Grange.
Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Carmalt Rowell of Duncansville; four
grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons: Calvin and William Carmalt; and a
daughter, Geneva Carmalt Worthen.

George W. Croft, 75, 809 Garber Street, Hollidaysburg, died Sunday afternoon,
July 25, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born September 12, 1923, in Duncansville, the son of the late Charles
O. and Sarah (Irvine) Croft.  He married Marjorie Burns October 17, 1942, in
Orange, NJ.
Mr. Croft retired as a supervisor from Conrail with 40 years of service.
He attended Hollidaysburg High School.
Mr. Croft was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European
Theater.
He enjoyed NASCAR racing.
Mr. Croft was a member of Portage Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons.
Surviving are his wife; two sons: David D. of Altoona and Dennis C. of
Hollidaysburg; two sisters: Fay A. Corle of Hollidaysburg and Shirley J.
McLellan of Orlando, FL; a brother, Dean E. of Porterville, CA; and five

Mrs. Daniels was an Army veteran of Vietnam.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

St. Benedict.

July 26, 1999, at the Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, following an extended
illness.
He was born May 12, 1928, in Altoona, the son of Harold A. and Ethel I.
(Thompson) Hileman.  He married Sara A. Shoemaker January 27, 1951, in
Hollidaysburg.
Mr. Hileman was a member of First Church of God, Hollidaysburg.
He retired from Sheetz Inc. in 1990, after 20 years of service, and
previously had been employed at United Home Dressed Meat Co., Altoona, for 20
years.
Mr. Hileman was a 1946 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in Okinawa as a
sergeant.
Mr. Hileman enjoyed boating and traveling.
He was a member of the Fort Fetter American Legion Post, Hollidaysburg.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Janice Cook of Hollidaysburg and Karen
Walters of Altoona; a son, Mark of New London, CT; a sister, Mary W. of
Altoona; and five grandchildren.

William E. Imler, 69, 1702 Ridge Road, New Enterprise, died Monday, July 26,
1999, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring.
He was born November 13, 1929, in Salemville, the son of the late Charles A.
and Vera M. (Kagarise) Imler.  He married June Hinish August 1, 1952, in
Woodbury.
Mr. Imler retired from New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. in 1992, after 40
years of service.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict, where he was awarded Five
Bronze campaign Stars.
Mr. Imler was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Wendy L. Fischer of Warfordsburg; a son,
Bradley W. of New Enterprise; three brothers: Charles D. of Williamsburg,
Larry D. of Woodbury and Lloyd N. of New Enterprise; and four grandchildren.

Sarah Jane Marshall
Mrs. Sarah Jane Marshall, 77, Fort Mitchell, AL, formerly of Hollidaysburg,
died Friday evening, July 23, 1999, at Fountain City Nursing Home, Columbus,
GA, following an extended illness.
She was born November 6, 1921, in Altoona, the daughter of the late John and
Florence (Walls) Walter.  She married Milton Marshall.  He preceded her in
death.
Mrs. Marshall was a 1939 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School.
She enjoyed golfing and was a former member of Park Hills Country Club.
Surviving are three sons: James E. and Craig I., both of Fort Mitchell, and
Kim I. of Hollidaysburg; three sisters: Gladys Ellenberger and Patty Long,
both of Hollidaysburg, and Nancy Kratzer of Manassas, VA; three brothers:
John, Julius and Jerry, all of Hollidaysburg; six grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons: Thomas and Scott.

William B. Miller, 90, 903 East Logan Avenue, Apartment E, died Monday
morning, July 26, 1999, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was born May 10, 1909, in Altoona, the son of the late William T. and Ida
(Dunn) Miller.  He married Christine Nancarrow October 30, 1935, in
Altoona.  She died in May 1979.
Mr. Miller was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg.
He retired as personnel supervisor of safety from Bell Telephone in 1974,
after 41 years of service.
Mr. Miller was a 1926 graduate of Altoona High School.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Miller was a member of Heidelberg Country Club, Altoona Lions Club and
the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Surviving are a son, William R. of Altoona; a sister, Norma Caldwell of
Flint, MI; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Nancy (Warholic) Swistock, 91, Madera, died Saturday morning, July 24, 1999,
at her residence.
She was born February 14, 1908, in Windber, the daughter of the late Wasco
and Catherine (Belis) Warholic.  She married Joseph Swistock.  He preceded
her in death.
Mrs. Swistock was a member of St. Mary's Annunciation Ukrainian Catholic
Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.
She retired as a seamstress from JBC Sewing Factory, Madera, after 18 years
of service.
Surviving are a sister, Mary Gavlak of Houtzdale RD; three brothers: Michael
of Delmont, John of Cleveland and George of Franklin, IN; five grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Lewis, June 4, 1994.

Mrs. Hazel L. Graham, 86, Seymour, TN, formerly of Cresson, died Monday, July
26, 1999, in Knoxville, TN.
She was born June 15, 1913, in Olean, NY, the daughter of the late John and
Clarissa (Cowles) Joy.  She married John A. Graham.  He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Graham was a member of Cresson United Methodist Church.
She retired as a charge aide from the Ebensburg and Cresson centers.
Mrs. Graham was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ebensburg.
Surviving are a daughter, Bonny Jane Powell of Seymour; two sons: Donald of
Hesston and Gordon of Altoona; two sisters: Arley Schemerhorn and Geraldine
Cornell, both of Olean; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, John.

Leon A. Marlett
Leon A. Marlett, 81, 1504 20th Avenue, died Tuesday morning, July 27, 1999,
at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born October 23, 1917, in Altoona, the son of John L. and Laura
(Benden) Marlett.  He was twice married.  First he married Kathlyn Hirsh. 
She died October 25, 1953.  He then married Mary (Forbes) Cowan March 10,
1974, at the Penn State Altoona Chapel.
Mr. Marlett was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
He retired as a painter from the maintenance department of Altoona Hospital
in 1983, with seven years of service.
Mr. Marlett was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict.
He enjoyed hunting.
Mr. Marlett was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, one of the
original founders of the Altoona Parochial Football League in 1953, had
coached the Cathedral football team for many years and was assistant coach of
the Cesare Battisti club's Little League baseball team.
Surviving are his wife; four sons: John E. of Buffalo, NY: Ronald A. of
Auburn, NY, David L. of Reno, NV, and Dennis W. of Stevensville, MD; a
daughter, Kathleen M. Cowan of Altoona; two sisters: Evelyn Farber and
Eleanor Roscia, both of Altoona; a brother, James of Neptune Beach, FL; 15
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Lutz, May 15, 1992.

Calvin O. "Cally" Peterman
Calvin O. "Cally" Peterman, 74, Altoona RD 1, died Monday afternoon, July 26,
1999, at Hershey Medical Center.
He was born August 12, 1924, in Altoona, the son of William and Clara
(Truman) Peterman.  He married Lois Long May 26, 1947, in Altoona.
Mr. Peterman attended First Baptist Church, Altoona, where he led the church
seniors program for many years.
He retired as a houseparent from Milton s. Hershey School, Hershey, in
January 1988, after 30 years of service, and had previously been employed as
a car inspector east-bound by the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Mr. Peterman was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the
Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
He was an avid hunter/sportsman and enjoyed traveling and the outdoors.
Mr. Peterman was a member of the AARP and the Riggles Gap Sportsmen's Club.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Judith L. Anderson of Hummelstown and
Eileen L. Conlon of Altoona; two sisters: Esther Ramsey of Altoona and Alta
Shadel of Steelton; two brothers: Harold of Greenwood and Robert of Altoona;
and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was a 1970 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg.
She enjoyed crafts.

Mrs. Geneva Seevers Edmiston, 79, 3216 Beale Avenue, died Tuesday, July 27,
1999, at Altoona Hospital.
She was born December 7, 1919, in Milan, IN, the daughter of Everett and
Lorena (Bruns) Seevers.  She married Steward S. Edmiston Aug. 7, 1945, in
Eberbach, Germany.  They were among the first Americans to be married in
Europe following World War II.
Mrs. Edmiston was a member of Broad Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she
served as an elder.
She was a graduate of SS Mary and Elizabeth School of Nursing, Louisville,
KY, and attended the University of Louisville.  Upon graduation, she enrolled
in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, serving in Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals during
World War II throughout Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany,
where she met her husband, "Pete."
Mrs. Edmiston was preceded in death by her two brothers.  She is survived by
her husband and four children: Dixon Edmiston and Leslie Musselman of
Altoona, Sally Brand of Columbus, IN, and Scott Edmiston of Boston; and seven
grandchildren: Shaun, Tyler, Ryan, Jennifer, Devyn, Kelsey and Sarah.  She
also is survived by her daughter-in-law, Cynthia; and sons-in-law: Tom
Musselman and John Brand.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 AM Friday, July 30, at a memorial
service at Broad Avenue Presbyterian Church.  Mrs. Edmiston requested that
contributions be made to Central Pennsylvania Human Society.

Mrs. Kathleen Lena Lane, 73, Locust Street, Petersburg, died Tuesday evening,
July 27, 1999, at her residence, following an extended illness.
She was born November 29, 1925, in Saxton, the daughter of the late Frederick
and Charlotte G. (Dick) Harrison.  She married Norman W. Lane December 22,
1959, in Hancock, MD.
Mrs. Lane was a member of Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church,
Huntingdon.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lane attended Saxton public schools.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters: Diana Moyer of Huntingdon and Tammy
Rupert of Altoona; three sons: Carl F. Pearson of Alexandria, John Vargo of
Barree and Ronald Vargo of Altoona; two sisters: Hilda I. Boyer of Spruce
Creek and Roxanna Mae Showalter of Alexandria; two brothers: Frederick of
Barree and George O. of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Robert E. Mathers, 41, Box 92, Birmingham, Tyrone RD 1, died Tuesday
afternoon, July 27, 1999, at his residence.
He was born September 30, 1957, in Altoona, the son of Robert S. and Jean
(Meghan) Mathers.  He was formerly married to Tracy Clawson.
Mr. Mathers was employed as a construction worker for The Renovators
Construction Co., Tyrone Forge.
He was a 1976 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School.
Mr. Mathers enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
He was a past member of Neptune Fire Company, Tyrone, and was a fund-raiser
for American Cancer Society, particularly Daffodil Days.
Surviving are a daughter, Jessica A. of Altoona; a son, Robert A. of Tyrone;
his parents of Tyrone RD 2; a sister; Michele C. of Altoona; two brothers:
Jeffrey L. of Juniata and Terry L. of Altoona; and his grandmother, Bertha

He was born March 16, 1915, in Chest Township, Clearfield County, the son of

January 15, 1949, in Patton.
Mr. McCulley had been employed as a laborer at Swank Refractories, Irvona.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Portland, OR.  She died May 24, 1994.
Mr. O'Shell was a a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Bellwood.
He retired as an electrician for the Penn Central Railroad in 1972, following
27 years of service.
Mr. O'Shell was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European and
African Theaters.
He enjoyed crossword puzzles and gardening.

Charles F. "Chal" Tremmel
Charles F. "Chal" Tremmel, 83, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of
Altoona RD, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at the home.
He was born February 3, 1916, in Pottstown, the son of the late Augustus and
Magdalena (Crone) Tremmel.  He married Vicky Lottero June 29, 1947, in New
York City.
Mr. Tremmel retired as a brakeman and conductor from the Penn Central
Railroad in 1976, after 31 years of service, and had previously been employed
as a coal miner for 10 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the
European-African-Middle Eastern theaters, and was awarded the Purple Heart,
five Bronze Stars and a Bronze Arrowhead.
Mr. Tremmel enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of Ashville Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Surviving are his wife of Altoona RD; two daughters: Maureen Harper of Wayne,
NJ, and Denis Michock of Ashville; two sons: Charles M. of Ashville and
William of Bedford; two sisters: Rita Vozar and Helen Schmidt, both of Parma,
OH; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Denver R. Ammerman Sr.
Denver R. Ammerman Sr., 79, Van Ormer, Fallentimber, died Thursday, July 29,
1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital.
He was born April 29, 1920, in Frugality, the son of the late William and
Ellen (Lee) Ammerman.  He married Leanore Cuomo.  She died March 12, 1993.
Mr. Ammerman worked in construction for Putnam and Greene, Philipsburg, for
30 years.
Surviving are two daughters: Marie McMasters of Van Ormer and Nancy Fink of
Dysart RD; a son, Denver Jr. of Van Ormer; a brother, Lee of Flinton; a
sister, Lucretia Krise of Mountaindale; five grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today and 10 to 11 AM
Saturday at Gibbons Funeral Home, Coalport.
AMMERMAN - Funeral services for Denver R. Ammerman Sr. will be held at 11 AM
Saturday at Gibbons Funeral Home, Coalport, with Pastor Benjamin Warfel
officiating.  Interment will be made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.

AM services Saturday at Gibbons Funeral Home, Coalport.  He is survived by
special friends: Regis and Sally Noel and children of Glasgow.  He was
preceded in death by his stepmother, Carrie Noel; a brother, Winter, and
sisters: Orvetta Conley, Wilmena Hamilton, Treva Hanna and Violet Eamigh.

Amy J. Bowers, 41, 307 Shelley Avenue, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at her
residence.
She was born in Roaring Spring, the daughter of the late Dick M. and Doris M.
(Burke) Bowers.
Miss Bowers was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring.
She was a 1976 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg, and attended
Penn State Altoona.
Surviving is an uncle, Roger Bowers of Roaring Spring.

Robert W. Kemberling
Robert W. Kemberling, 78, 821 Bell Avenue, died Wednesday evening, July 28,
1999, at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia,
following an extended illness.
He was born August 27, 1920, in Akron, OH, the son of the late Robert W. and
Etta (Cook) Kemberling.  He married Ella E. Wood June 5, 1946, in Altoona.
Mr. Kemberling retired as a baker from Benzel's Bakery in May 1985, following
25 years of service.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 53rd Armored
Infantry Battalion of the 4th Armored Division.  He was awarded the
European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars, the
Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Medal.
Mr. Kemberling was a member of the Concordia Singing Society.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Suzanne Johnson of Aston; a sister,
Thelma Whitesel of Bellwood; two brothers: William R. of Macon, GA, and
George of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Saturday at Daniel R.
Myers Funeral Home.
KEMBERLING - Funeral services for Robert W. Kemberling of 821 Bell Avenue

George "Moosie" Michaels
George "Moosie" Michaels, 70, 215 East 54th Street, Savannah, GA, formerly of
Altoona, died Monday morning, July 26, 1999, at his residence, following an
extended illness.
He was born July 25, 1929, in Altoona, the son of Frank and Smaragda
(Arseniu) Michaels.
Mr. Michaels was a member of St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Savannah.
He retired as the owner of Colony Steakhouse, Altoona, in 1995, and had
previously been employed as banquet manager at Piccadilly Hotel, New York
City.  He had 50 years of service in the restaurant business.
Mr. Michaels was a 1947 graduate of Textile High School, New York City, and
attended Oswego College, Oswego, NY.
He was a veteran of the Korean conflict.
Mr. Michaels enjoyed traveling and aviation.
Surviving are two daughters: Sandra Petrillo of Savannah and Valerie
Mavratsas of Nicosia, Cyprus; a son, Paris of Potomac, MD; a sister, Mary
Panos of Altoona; two brothers: Tom of Barnegat, NJ and James of Westwood,
NJ; and three grandsons.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Sunday at Jones Funeral
Home.
MICHAELS - Funeral services for George "Moosie" Michaels will be held at 10
AM Monday, August 2, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Altoona, with
Father Michael Poplos officiating.  Interment will be made at Rose Hill

Funeral Home, where Trisaigon services will be held at 7:30 PM Sunday.  He is
survived by son-in-law, Caesar Mavratsas; daughter-in-law, Annie Michaels;
three grandsons: Nicholas and Christopher Michaels and Vasilis Mavratsas;
several nieces and nephews; and his friend and caregiver, Pecolia Hopson.  He
was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Markadakis, February 3, 1993.

Margaret "Peg" (Himes) Oakes
Mrs. Margaret "Peg" (Himes) Oakes, 68, 108 Hunkey Hollow Road, Duncannon,
died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Community General Osteopathic Hospital,
Harrisburg.
She was born September 7, 1930, in Blair County, the daughter of Howard and
Dorothy (Ritchey) Himes.  Her mother preceded her in death.  She married
Alvin Dean Oakes.  He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Oakes was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Duncannon.
She retired from Impact Systems, Harrisburg.
Surviving are two daughters: Jennifer D. Miller of Middletown and Polly A.
Oakes-Tarell of Duncannon; her father of Martinsburg; two brothers: Clair and
John, both of Duncannon; and three grandsons.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Sunday and 10 to 11 AM Monday at
Ronald C. L. Smith Funeral Home, Duncannon.

Kenneth E. Thomas
Kenneth E. Thomas, 48, 605 Cove Lane Road, Roaring Spring, died Wednesday,
July 28, 1999, in Blair County.
He was born April 21, 1951, in Roaring Spring, the son of John V. and Hazel
(Cunningham) Thomas.  His father died March 9, 1985.
Mr. Thomas was a 1969 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg.
He was an Army veteran, serving at Fort Jackson, SC, during the Vietnam
conflict.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Ray-Camp Veterans of Foreign Wars Post,
Roaring Spring.
Surviving are a daughter, Tamera of Martinsburg; a son, Kenneth E. Jr. of
Martinsburg; a stepdaughter, Jessica Reeder of Martinsburg; a stepson,
William Reeder of Martinsburg; his mother of Roaring Spring; a sister, Connie
L. of Roaring Spring; two brothers: John R. of Hebron, OH, and Roy L. of
Duncansville; and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral Home, Roaring Spring.

Raymond L. Dodson
Raymond L. Dodson, 67, East Freedom, died Thursday morning, July 29, 1999, at
Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following an extended illness.
He was born May 1, 1932, in East Freedom, the son of the late Leo and Marie
(Claar) Dodson.  He married Judy L. Baird in Baltimore.
Mr. Dodson was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Newry, where he was
a worker in various church functions.
He retired as a brakeman and conductor from Conrail in 1986, after 35 years
of service.
Mr. Dodson was a 1950 graduate of Hollidaysburg Senior High School.
He enjoyed woodworking, pool and chess.
Mr. Dodson was a member of Altoona City Pool League and Bavarian Club and
played with the former East Freedom Baseball Team in the Blair Twilight
League.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Julie A. Horner and Christina M.
Holsinger, both of Roaring Spring, and Bella M. Aiello of Lancaster, NY; two
sons: Gregory A. of Williamsport and Brian L. of Olean, NY; six sisters:
Regina L. Delozier of East Freedom, Marian M. Blazevich of Imler RD 1,
Loretta M. Walter, Inez M. Biesinger and Barbara E. Leslie, all of Claysburg,
and Colleen A. Ercole of Alexandria, VA; two brothers: L. Mike of East Freedom
RD and Vincent L. of Claysburg; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Sunday at Sorge Funeral
Home, Hollidaysburg.
DODSON - A funeral Mass for Raymond R. "Ray" Dodson will be held at 11 AM

Dorothy M. Echard
Mrs. Dorothy M. Echard, 85, Sarah A. Todd Nursing Home, Carlisle, formerly of
Hollidaysburg, died Friday morning, July 30, 1999, at Carlisle Hospital,
following an extended illness.
She was born May 2, 1914, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Rock.  She married William E. Echard March 7, 1936, at First Church of God,
Hollidaysburg.  He died March 4, 1975.
Mrs. Echard was a member of First Church of God, Hollidaysburg.
She enjoyed crafts and sing-a-longs at the nursing home.
Surviving are three daughters: Margaret Rentschler of Boiling Springs;
Barbara A. Sill of Mechanicsburg and Linda M. of State College; a son,
Charles E. of Baton Rouge, LA; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Earl C. Forsht, 75, 12 Sylvan Heights Drive, Hollidaysburg, died Thursday
afternoon, July 29, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness
of lung cancer. 
He was born December 22, 1923, in Altoona, the son of the late Albert T. and
Anna Florence (Carles) Forsht.  He married Anne R. Thompson October 9, 1946,
in Winchester, VA.
Mr. Forsht was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hollidaysburg.
He retired as a pressman from Butterick in 1985, after 23 years of service. 
He previously had been employed in the East Altoona engine house of the
Pennsylvania Railroad.
Mr. Forsht was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Air Force in
the European Theater.
He enjoyed golf and bowling.
Mr. Forsht was a member of Bavarian Aid Society, Hollidaysburg American
Legion and Altoona Council of the Navy League.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Wendy A. Pressas of Atlanta; a sister,
Lottie Berzonsky of Mount Holly, NJ; and a brother, Roy of Bellwood.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Monday at Plank, Stitt and
Stevens Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg.
FORSHT - The funeral of Earl C. Forsht of 12 Sylvan Heights Drive,

Leone P. McCaulley
Leone P. McCaulley, 69, 906 North Sixth Street, Bellwood, the daughter of the
late Floyd A. and Ethel M. (McCaulley) McCaulley.
Miss McCaulley was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses, Tipton.
She retired as a manager of Roll's Meat Market, Tipton, in 1982, following 30
years of service.
Miss McCaulley was a 1947 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School.
She enjoyed flower gardening and baking cookies.
Surviving are a sister, Maxine E. Loupe of Bellwood; and a brother, Frank C.
of Altoona.

McCAULLEY - Services for Leone P. McCaulley of 906 North Sixth Street,

Andrew M. Waite
Andrew M. Waite, 66, Allemansville, Fallentimber RD, died Friday, July 30,
1999, at Altoona Hospital.
He was born March 12, 1933, in Gulich Township, Clearfield County, the son of
the late Andrew and Edith (Delfoose) Waite.  He was twice married.  First he
married Julia Nedimyer.  She preceded him in death.  He then married Jean
Gallaher November 24, 1967, in Ansonville.
Mr. Waite had been employed as a truck driver for Elliot Coal Co.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Edith Stevens of Tipton and Annie
Stephenson of Madera; two sons: Andrew III of Coalport and Walter of Irvona;
three sisters: Claria Zimmerman of Beccaria, Tiney Packett in Florida and
Phoebe Campbell of Smithmill; a brother, Butch of Ramey; eight grandchildren;
and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be no viewing.
