He was born in Altoona on Aug. 8, 1886, a son of Theodore and Mary (Kelly) Babcock. He served in the World war as a sergeant in the headquarters company of the 58th infantry in France, being honorably discharged on Aug. 7, 1919. Surviving are one sister, Miss Ella Babcock, and one brother, Edward O. Babcock, of the city, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Babcock was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Forty and Eight society. Friends are being received at the home. Brode, a well known citizen of Coalmont, died at his residence in that place on Sunday, April 3, 1938, about 10 o'clock p.m. Death was caused by a complication of diseases. Mr. Brode was the son of Daniel Brode and Sara (Reed) Brode, and was born in Huntingdon county, July 13, 1860. At the time of death he was aged 77 years, 7 months and 20 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Hattie (Hughes) Brode, and one daughter, Mrs. Sara Peters, of Coalmont. One brother, Lewis Brode, of Coalmont, and three sisters, Mrs. Martha Weaver, of Saxton, Mrs. Alice Graffious, of Defiance, and Mrs. Matilda Lowry, of Saxton, R.D., also survive. Mr. Brode was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses. Funeral services will be held at the residence in Coalmont on Wednesday, April 6, at 2 o'clock p.m. Interment will be made in the Brode cemetery. He was born at McVeytown, June 5, 1887, a son of Alva M. and Laura (Moore) Caldwell. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Caldwell, a son and daughter, Max Caldwell of Altoona and Mrs. Virginia Swartz of Pittsburgh, both to a former marriage, and a sister, Mrs. Verna Flenner of Tyrone. He was a member of the United Brethren church and local 174, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Friends will be received at the Mauk & Yates funeral home at 6 o'clock this evening. Penn Street [Bedford] at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 1941. He had been bedfast for seven weeks. He was born Aug. 2, 1872, at Gapsville, the son of William and Elizabeth (Whitfield) Carnell. Mr. Carnell lived in Bedford for 35 years and was employed at the H. H. Lysinger mill until the last six years when he retired. He was united in marriage to Emma J. Dibert on November 20, 1901, who survives with two brothers Philip, of Ashcom and William, of Amaranth. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Lutheran church. Wednesday at 10 a.m. E.S.T. (SWARTZ), 1948 MRS. SUSAN M. CHERRY Of 209 Twenty-second avenue, died at the Altoona hospital yesterday afternoon at 12.45 o'clock. She was born in Altoona June 13, 1891, the daughter of William and Minnie (Stull) Swartz. Surviving are her husband, Harry T. Cherry; one daughter, Mrs. August E. Davis of Wehnwood; a niece, Mrs. Bernice Ebersole of Altoona; two nephews, John L. Swartz of Altoona and Howard Cherry of Juniata, who was raised in her home. CRUM Aged 68, of 1511 Fifteenth street, a retired Pennsylvania railroad employe, died of a heart attack at his home last evening, Deputy Coroner Edgar G. Walls reported. When his wife, who had been away from home during the afternoon, returned, she found the body of her husband. He was born in Tyrone Nov. 4, 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Crum and later moved to Hollidaysburg and then to Altoona upon his marriage. He resided here since that time. Mr. Crum was retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad company where he had been employed as a molder in the brass foundry at South Altoona. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth M. (Kleinsorgen) Crum, and the following sons and daughters: Andrew E. and Elmer N., both of Baltimore; John W. and Clarence B., both of Altoona, and Mrs. Joseph Priddy of Sinking valley, four grandchildren. (GREEN), 1948 MRS. ELLA B. CULBERTSON Formerly of Eldorado, died at the Aultman hospital, Canton, O. yesterday afternoon at 1.40 o'clock. She was born Nov. 4, 1866, in Altoona, the daughter of Joseph and Anne E. (Cherry) Green, and had recently been making her home with her granddaughter, Mrs. Chester Bardine of Canton, whom she raised. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. J. H. DeArment of Altoona; one granddaughter, Mrs. Bardine; and two grandsons, Joe McCleary of Pittsburgh and Bud McCleary of Buffalo, N.Y. Mrs. Culbertson was a member of the Fifty-eighth Street Methodist church. The body will arrive in Altoona Wednesday night, and friends will be received at the Saleme funeral home Thursday. He was born in Renlingen, Germany, on Oct. 30, 1863, but had resided in Altoona for the past forty-five years. He was a shoemaker by trade. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Catherine (Beyer) Landeck; four daughters and one son, Catherine, Anna, Elsie, Helen and William, all at home; three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Schachmer of Germany. One son, Carl, jr., died last October. Mr. Landeck was a member of St. James Lutheran church, where funeral services will be held at 2.30 o'clock Friday afternoon. Lipple, aged 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Lipple, is reported to be the first Cambria county casualty of World War No. 2. The navy department has reported to the parents in Ashville that the young man is missing in the sinking of the U.S.S. Arizona on Dec. 7. He was one of three brothers in the navy. The others, Paul, a fireman on board a destroyer, and Joseph G. Lipple, youngest of the brothers, also are in the Hawaiian waters and unheard from by the parents. John A. Lipple was born in Altoona on Aug. 9, 1917, was graduated from the Paton High school in 1935, and enlisted the following year. In addition to the parents and brothers in the navy he is [survived by three sisters:] Catherine and Margaret, at home, and Sister M. Evangelista of the Immaculate Heart of Mary order at Woodlawn. MARY (GALBRAITH) NEPTUNE Widow of Newton Neptune, died yesterday afternoon at 3.15 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Dessie White, 1204 Sixteenth avenue, after an illness that forced her to be bedfast for several years. Born at Jersey Shore, Lycoming county, she was the oldest daughter of James sand Mary Ann (Smith) Galbraith. Members of the family include a brother, James S. Galbraith of Sinking Valley; three sisters, Anna M. Galbraith of Jersey Shore, Mrs. Nellie White of Altoona, Elizabeth L. Galbraith of Altoona, and a number of nephews and nieces. ANNIE PALMER Mrs. Annie Palmer, 916 Fifth avenue, Juniata, widow of Henry Palmer, died at her home at 1:10 o'clock Thursday morning, Feb. 27, 1941, after having been ill for the past several years. Born in Huntingdon county March 12, 1865, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Koch, but had resided in Altoona for the past 50 years. Mr. Palmer died nine years ago. Members of the family include one daughter and three sons, Mrs. Nellie Shellenberger, William, George and Harry, all of Altoona; fifteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one brother and four sisters, Mrs. Ella Shook and Mrs. Margaret Swanger, both of Harrisburg, Mrs. Edward Mallery, Mrs. Edith McGraw and John Koch, all of Altoona. ANNIE (McINTOSH) PERRY, 1934 Widow of Harvey C. Perry, died at 1015 o'clock this morning at her home, 1616 Eleventh street. She underwent an operation recently, complications setting in. She was born at Beechwood, Jefferson county, on June 21, 1881. Her husband died on April 17, this year. Surviving are the mother, Mrs. Emma McIntosh of Brockton, N.Y. and the following children: Mrs. F. M. Briner and Mrs. J. H. Fochler, together with one grandchild, Betty Lou Briner, all of Altoona. Three sisters, Mrs. R. C. McMinn of Brockton, N.Y., Mrs. H. A. Morrow of Yatesboro, Pa., and Mrs. Olive Kline of DuBois, also survive. She was a member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church and the Mary E. Clarkson Bible class. Hand-dated 10/8/1934 Claar Obituary Collection, C0002, page 21 _____ RENNEY, Charles, 1941 MAN IS KILLED ON HIGHWAY BY HUNTERS' AUTO Charles Renney, Aged 41, of Bellwood Dies From Injuries at Altoona Hospital Charles Renney, aged 41, of North Ninth street, Bellwood, was injured fatally about 3 o'clock this morning when struck by an automobile while crossing the Altoona-Tyrone highway just west of the Bellwood intersection. He died at 4.15 o'clock at the Altoona hospital, where he was admitted at 3.20 o'clock. Examination at the hospital disclosed that he had suffered a possible fracture of the skull and fractures of both legs. He was in a semi-conscious condition when admitted to the hospital. The automobile which struck him was driven by J. L. Faust of 829 First avenue, Altoona, who was en route to Renovo for a hunting trip, accompanied by several other Altoonans. Reports to Police. Mr. Faust reported to state motor police that he did not see the man on the highway until too late to avoid hitting him because of lights of cars traveling in the opposite direction. The injured man was removed to the hospital by William H. Palmer of 711 Fourth avenue, Juniata, accompanied by Mr. Faust. With Faust for the hunting trip were A. S. Lloyd of Altoona, R. D. No. 2, Harris Filer of 3114 West Chestnut avenue and R. A Barnett of 912 Forty-eighth street. Palmer was following the Faust car but did not see the accident occur. At least one man was with Renney when the accident happened, but his identity has not yet been established. Officers Harris and Green of the state motor police are investigating the fatality, along with Deputy Coroner Dr. C. E. Shope. They visited the scene of the accident early this morning and are continuing their investigations today. The fatality is the thirtieth in Blair county this year, according to the records of the Altoona Mirror. Born at Greenwood. Charles Renney was born at Greenwood on Sept. 8, 1900, a son of James E. and Mae (Green) Renney. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Violet Renney; two sons and one daughter, James E. of Bellwood and Charles W. in the United States army and Mrs. Evelyn Leap of McKees Rocks, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Wahl, also of McKees Rocks. The body has been removed to the Fuoss mortuary in Bellwood. Hand-dated 12/6 Claar Obituary Collection, C023, page 114 _____ SHELLENBERGER, Herman L., 1938 HERMAN L. SHELLENBERGER A lifelong resident of Tyrone and retired employe of the West Virginia Pulp & Paper company, died at his home, 1851 Adams avenue, Tyrone, at 8.30 o'clock yesterday morning as the result of a stroke. He was born on Dec. 25, 1863, a son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Saxon) Shellenberger, and on April 28, 1885, married Miss Tamar Mountz. Surviving are his wife, two daughters and one son, Miss Lila Shellenberger, at home, Mrs. Chester Melcher and John F. Shellenberger of Tyrone, and two grandsons Richard and Robert Shellenberger. He was a member of the Methodist church, a charter member of the East Tyrone lodge of Junior Mechanics, and Allegheny Gateway lodge, I.O.O.F. Mr. Shellenberger retired from the paper company service last April. HERMAN L. SHELLENBERGER, a life-long resident of Tyrone, died at his home, 1851 Adams avenue, Tyrone, Thursday morning, Dec. 8, 1838, at 8:30 o'clock. Mr. Shellenberger had been ill for over two years and last Saturday suffered a paralytic stroke which hastened his death. Herman Lewis Shellenberger was a son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Saxon) Shellenberger, and was born in Tyrone December 25, 1863. On April 28, 1885 he was united in marriage with Miss Tamar Mountz. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Shellenberger resided in Centre Line and Warrior's Mark, returning to Tyrone where they have resided since 1888. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Miss Lila Shellenberger, at home, Mrs. Chester Melcher, of Tyrone, and one son, John F. Shellenberger, also of Tyrone; also two grandsons, Richard and Robert Shellenberger. Mr. Shellenberger was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, a charter member of the old East Tyrone lodge of the Junior Order United American Mechanics, and Allegheny Gateway lodge No. 187, I.O.O.F. He was employed by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper company until his retirement last April. He started his service at the paper mill when it was opened by the Morrison, Cass Paper company. JENNIE BLANCHE WESTFALL Wife of A. E. Westfall and formerly of 1108 Nineteenth street, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. K. W. Collin, 519 Valley View road, Merion, yesterday morning. She was born in Chambersburg, a daughter of Solomon and Sarah (Ward) Barnes. Surviving are her husband, one son and one daughter, James B. Westfall of the city and Mrs. Collin, and three grandchildren. Mrs. Westfall was a lifelong member of the Second Presbyterian church. Friends will be received at the N. A.
