JOSEPH W. AKE.

Joseph W. Ake, a retired veteran of the Pennsy as also a veteran of
the Civil war, died at his home, 709 Howard avenue, yesterday morning
at 12:50 o'clock, from a complication of diseases. He had been ill for
over six weeks but was confined to his bed less than one day. He was
born on the Fair farm, in Logan township, September 7, 1843, and was a
son of William and Anna Bell Ake, both deceased. A portion of his life
was spent in the middle west, he returning to Altoona some twenty-five
years ago and making his home with his sister, Mrs. W. A. Heller, of
209 Howard avenue. He was a veteran employe of the P.R.R. company,
being retired from active service two years ago. He was a member of
the One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteers, enlisting
when he was 18 years old. After two years of service he was honorably
discharged, re-enlisting for service shortly after his discharge. He
spent six months in the defense of his country in the second
enlistment, totally two years and six months' service. While not a
member of any church, Mr. Ake was an attendant at the Grace Methodist
Episcopal church and was quite active in church affairs. Surviving him
are a wife and son, William A. Ake, both of Chicago; one sister, Mrs.
Heller, at whose home he died, as also two brothers - James A. Ake, of
Indiana, and R. P. Ake, of 406 Willow avenue, this city. Funeral
services will be held from the late home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30,
with private interment following in the Rose Hill cemetery. The body
may be viewed from 7 until 8:30 this evening and from 9 until 9:30
tomorrow morning.
