WOMAN KILLED IN FALL DOWN STAIRS
Body of Mrs. S. O. Adler, 1802 Eleventh Avenue, Found by Husband

Returning home after an absence of four hours, S. O. Adler, a
prominent retired feed merchant of the city, residing at 1802 Eleventh
avenue, found the dead body at the foot of the cellar steps, at 5
o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The exact time and the cause of the accident are unknown, but it is
supposed that the woman fell down the flight of stairs shortly after 1
o'clock. Her body was huddled where it had fallen, lodged against an
offset in the cellar wall. The face, head, shoulders and arms were
badly bruised. Death was due to concussion of the brain.
Mr. Adler left the home yesterday afternoon a few minutes after 1
o'clock, and Mrs. Adler was left alone. It developed last evening that
the grocer called at the house at 2 o'clock, rapping loudly but
receiving no answer. He concluded that none of the family was home and
went on his way.
At 5 o'clock Mr. Adler returned. He noticed at once that his wife
was not about and concluded that she had either stepped out or was
upstairs. He opened the door at the head of the cellar stairs and
switching on the cellar light was horrified to see the body of his wife
huddled at the foot of the short flight of steps.
He carried the body upstairs and in the frantic hope that life was
not extinct, called Dr. Homer Miller, who arrived in a few minutes and
found that the woman had been dead for several hours. He pronounced
death due to concussion of the brain.
Mrs. Adler had been a sufferer from rheumatism for years and had also
been affected with faint and dizzy spells recently. It is thought that
she went to the head of the cellar stairs and reaching for the light
switch, either became dizzy or tripped and fell headlong.
Marie Anna Adler was born in Dresden, Germany, January 28, 1854, and
coming to America in 1874, came directly to Altoona. She was married
shortly after coming here, to Stephen O. Adler, who survives with the
following children: A. O. Adler, A. H. Adler, Mrs. Elsie Furrer, all of
this city, and Mrs. Olga Geisler, of Indianapolis, Ind. Two sisters
also survive, Mrs. Jacob Hauser and Mrs. Otto Kampman, of Altoona, and
one brother, Albert Greunich, also of this city. Twelve grandchildren
also survive. Mrs. Adler was a member of St. James Lutheran church.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
