Samuel S. Blair, who was superintendent of the Try and Come in railroad for 
thirty years, died at his home in Tyrone Saturday afternoon. Samuel Smoyer 
Blair, born in Susquehanna township, Dauphin county, on October 9, 1833, was a 
son of Samuel and Catherine Smoyer Blair. He was educated in the public schools 
of Dauphin county.  In his youth, he left his father's farm and served for a 
time on the canal. In 1851, he entered active business life Pittsburg as
mercantile clerk for the ??? of ???? Jones Co., engaged in transportation
business.  On June 11, 1853, he entered the service of the Pennsylvania 
Railroad company and was transferred to the Adams Express company as messenger 
between Harrisburg and Baltimore, in September of the same year. Returning to 
the P. R. R. company in March, 1854, he became assistant freight conductor, and 
was in a short time promoted to freight conductor, in which capacity
he served until January 1, 1860. At this time, he was appointed agent at Bolton 
station, Baltimore, of the Northern Central railway, and during the same year 
received an appointment as trainmaster. He was made superintendent of the 
Baltimore division in June, 1863, with headquarters at Baltimore and York, and 
was in the latter city when General Early made his famous raid into 
Pennsylvania, burning the town of Chambersburg. Transferred to Tyrone in 1873,
he filled the position of superintendent of the Tyrone division for a period
of thirty years, or until his retirement from service on November 1, 1903.
