Clearfield Progress 3/30/1915
Miss Bertha Anderson Clearfield Progress 3/30/1915

Second Attempt to Commit Suicide Proves SuccessfulHad Taken Poison Some Weeks
Ago While Employed as a Domestic by a Clearfield FamilyWas About to be Brought
to the County Home.

While suffering from aberration of the mind, Bertha Anderson, daughter of A. A.
Anderson, of Grampian, drank lye, from the effects of which she died last
evening at 11 o'clock. Miss Anderson's mind had been affected for some time,
and this is the second time she attempted to take her life. While employed as a
domestic by a family in Clearfield about a month ago Bertha swallowed poison,
but her life was saved at that time. Sometime ago Bertha went to Pittsburg,
where she was employed as a domestic. Her condition became such
that she was taken charge of, by the board of charities of that city and
the Clearfield county commissioners were notified. She was brought to her home
last week, and knowing her condition, a watch was kept over her, but Sunday
night she managed to elude her watchers and got hold of a box of Banner lye,
drinking about half the contents. When this was discovered, Dr. Currier
was called and worked with her the better part of the day yesterday, but
without avail. It was the intention of the county commissioners, to bring Miss
Anderson to the county home sometime today. The first plan was to bring her
down yesterday, but her condition was such that she could not be moved.
Bertha was about 19 years of age, the daughter of A. A. Anderson, of
Grampian. That she was not in her right mind, when she drank the lye is
the general verdict. No other cause for the suicide is known.
