The Carnesville Herald July 28, 1960
By Billy Dilworth

Two young Franklin County sisters were killed when struck by an out-of-control
car. Wednesday afternoon on a rural road near Royston. The car's three occupants
were injured, one critically.

Emma Fay Fortson, 15, of Route 1, Royston, in the Salem Church Community, was dead
on arrival at Cobb Memorial Hospital. She apparently died from a broken neck.

The victim's younger sister, Sylvia Lee Fortson, died at 1 a.m. Thursday in the
Royston hospital. She suffered a broken right ankle, right arm, jaw and cuts and
bruises about the body.

The Fortsons were the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Deryl Fortson.

In serious condition in Cobb Memorial at a late hour was Roger Patterson, 16, son
of Mrs. Lucille Patterson of Carnesville. Young Patterson, a passenger in the car,
suffered scalp fractures.

Grady Harold Bond, 17, of Rt. 1, Royston listed by the State Patrol as driver of
the 1953 Chevrolet, suffered cuts and bruises. He was in "fair" condition at Cobb
Memorial Hospital, as was Herbert H. Carey, 18, also of Rt. 1, Royston. Carey was
knocked unconscious.

Trooper Guy McGinnis of Toccoa Highway Patrol, investigating officer, said Bond
evidently lost control of the car while rounding a curve on the Salem Church Road,
five and a half miles south of Royston. The patrolman said the car struck the two
young girls at a point out of the curve and overturned in the highway.
The Fortson sisters were returning from their grandmother's home to their home,
reports indicated. They were knocked approximately 55 feet by the car, Trooper
McGinnis said.
