Anniston Star June 20, 1949
Diligent effort to revive a 14-year-old Clay County boy who was rescued from
Taylor's Lake at Chulafinnee were carried on for about four hours yesterday
afternoon before hope was abandoned. These efforts included assistance on the
part of Anniston Fire Department, the State Highway Patrol, a physician, and
three young men who were trained in Red Cross safety courses. The victim. J. D.
Hallmark, was swimming with three brothers in Taylor's Lake, formerly an ore pit
in the Chulafinnee section about 16 miles from Anniston on the Horseblock
Mountain Road. Efforts were made to rescue the boy before aid was sought. It was
estimated variously from 20 to 30 minutes that the boy was in the water.
Respiration Started B. L. Noell of Oxford was on the scene before the rescue was
made. He started artificial respiration. Orbiee Estes of Heflin was there, too.
He relieved Noell then James Hendon a student at JSTC. of near Wedowee joined
efforts to revive young Hallmark. These three carried on until Fire Chief E. E.
White arrived with a respirator and a small tank of oxygen. Rescue workers said
they believed the boy would have been revved if oxygen had lasted 15 or 20
minutes longer. About 15 minutes were lost in getting a new tank of oxygen from
the hospital. The Highway Patrol made the 10-mile trip in record time with the
tank of oxygen. It was then decided to brink, the boy the hospital Hendon and
Estes carried on artificial respiration in Jones ambulance in route to the
hospital. After about 30 minutes in the hospital's iron lung, the effort was
abandoned. The physician who was in charge of the case said brain cells start to
disintegrate in seven minutes and that it is rare for a person to be revived
after being in the water over 15 to 18 minutes. Second Victim Here. The Hallmark
boy is the second drowning victim of the year in the Anniston territory. Hoyt
Waldrep 27. of near Eastaboga, was drowned in pond on May 8. Funeral services
will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Wesobulga Baptist Church
with the Rev. Horace Homesley and the Rev. Chester Craft officiating. Burial
will be in the adjoining cemetery. Usrey Funeral Home in charge. Young Hallmark
is survived by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Hallmark of Delta Rt. two
brothers, H. H. Hallmark. Jr and Melvin Hallmark, both of Delta Rt. 1, his
grandfather, George Hallmark, also of Delta; and his grandmother, Mrs. M.C.
Jones of Oxford, Rt. 2.
