The Birmingham News March 15, 1941
A large crowd attending a school play narrowly escaped injury here Friday night 
as fire destroyed the $60.000 Cragford Consolidated School. The blaze, believed 
to have been due to defective wiring, soon enveloped the building and several 
hundred in the school auditorium fled from the building. Several were reported 
to have had narrow escapes. An electrical transformer blowout made it impossible 
to pump water from a nearby well, and by the time equipment from Lineville. 
headed by Fire Chief Puckett Riley arrived the building was virtually destroyed. 
Lineville firemen, however succeeded in saving the teachers building near the 
school. Frank M. Allen. Clay County superintendent of education. Saturday 
announced that plans for immediate rebuilding would be made estimated at $60.000 
The building carried a $20 000 insurance policy.
