  ACKERMAN

  Seymour Ackerman died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Easton, Md., after a long
  illness.  He was 80.  Born and raised in New York, he graduated from City
  College of New York and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.  For more
  than 10 year, "Doc" Ackerman had an optometry practice in Somerset, Pa.  In
  1954 he moved his family to Rockaway, NJ, and began a new career as an
  engineer in the aerospace industry.  Over the next 30 years, "Sy" Ackerman
  designed components that are currently in use on satellites and naval
  aircraft.  In 1986, he and his wife retired to Carlisle, Pa.  Evelyn
  Bernhardt Ackerman, his wife of 46 years, died in 1990.  Dr. Ackerman is
  survived by son, Robert of Waldorf, Md.; daughter, Deborah of Topanga,
  Calif,; step-daughter, Linda Fox of Shanksville, and three grandchildren,
  Nicole, Ira and Joi; and one great-granddaughter, Aniyia.  The family will
  hold a private memorial service in Somerset.
