The Cherokee Advance 10 July 1885 p 3
Thursday morning morning (sic) last Charlie Johnson and Jerry Davis, both
colored, left town bent on having a day of pleasure. They went over somewhere
into Harbin's district and there obtained from an illicit distillery a quart
of pure old red eye-the distilled juice of corn--and after spending the
greater portion of the day in the country, enjoying the company of those
around the still-house and others whom they met, they started back home, and
getting to the river about six o'clock, decided to get into a boat and "run
their trot line" to see if they had not "hooked in" a few of the finny tribe.
But, alas, in their drunken stupor they both caught hold of the line, and
drawing it beside the boat, caused it to capsize and throw them both into the
water which was 12 feet or more deep. Charlie was nearer the bank and,
although he can not swim, managed to get out safely, with only the loss of his
coat and two bottles of whisky; but Jerry, who was a good swimmer when sober,
went under once, again, and then again to rise no more by his own exertions.
The alarm was given as soon as Charlie could get out and cross the river. A
crowd went down and searched the river until dark came on, when they came away
to wait until morning. About 7 o'clock Friday morning, while dragging the
river for him, one of hooks (sic) caught in his boot and he was pulled into
the boat. Drs. Turk and Coleman were present, and from the position in which
he lay and in which his arms were drawn they were of the opinion he died with
a spasm. He was lying with his head down stream about 20 feet from where the
boat capsized. Jerry was an industrious, inoffensive negro, . . . He left a
wife.
