The Cherokee Advance 6 May 1887 p 3
An Old Citizen Dead

It was a surprise to many of our citizens to hear of the death of Judge Chamlee
last Saturday morning, although he was known to have been in feeble health for a
long while. He was a man of strong constitution, resolute determination, and
energy, and would not take his bed until obliged to do so, hence he was confined
to his bed less than one week.
Tilman Chamlee was born in South Carolina, 22nd Nov 1809; a few years afterwards
his father removed to Hall county in this state. Upon reaching the years of
manhood he there was united in marriage to Miss Kindness B. Light, Dec. 21st
1830; his wife is now living, being in the 79th year of her age and enjoying
good health. In 1832 Mr. Chamlee removed to this county, and in 1840 settled the
place where he lived until death claimed him last Saturday morning at about 1
o'clock-April 30th-being then 77 years, 5 months and 8 days old. He was a member
of Harmony Primitive Baptist church and lived up to its faith and practices. As
above stated he had been a citizen of this county about 55 years and was widely
known, honored and respected by all who knew him.For many years he was Judge of
the Inferior Court of this county and held many other places of honor and trust
during his citizenship here. Several years ago he made his will leaving all his
property, at his death, to his wife, who survives him after her death the
property is to be equally divided among his five children now living and the
heirs, if any, of the five who are dead.
His remains were intered (sic) Saturday evening last in the family burial
ground. The mortal has put off immortality, the corruptible has become
incorruptible and Death is swallowed up in victory.
A good, generous, respected, honored and beloved old citizen has passed away
from this world to another, and, we have hopes and assurances, to a brighter,
better and happier one than this. Peace be to his ashes.
