The Cherokee Advance 24 Dec 1881 p 1
A Sudden and Terrible Death

Last Wednesday, about 10 o'clock A. M> while Mr. R. L. Patterson's machinery was
under a full head of steam--Every wheel was stopped in a moment--Dozens of men
went rushing to the shop, led by the Doctors. Every one seemed seized with
panic. All business was as suddenly suspended as the moving of the machinery
and a silence reigned throughout the town that was felt like a crushing weight.
The Shocking cause
Mr. Bridge's little boy, about ten years of age, was arranging to grind his axe,
the stone running by steam, and in putting the belt upon the wheel, his foot was
caught and he was thrown on a horizontal shaft. The shaft was near the ground,
and the poor little fellow was carried round many times, literally beating out
his life against the ground.
His thigh was crushed, nearly all of his scalp torn from his head and hung over
his face.
In less than two minutes--Dr.'s Sewell, Coleman, Turk and Green were with him.
He had every attention and all was done for him that skill could do. But in
about one and a half hours he ceased from suffering. The concussion was more
than life could bear.
May God comfort the heart-broken Mother and weeping Father.
