The Cherokee Advance 9 Dec 1882 p 2
Obituary

Mary Elizabeth, eldest daughter of J. H. and Susan M. Brewster, was born in
Cherokee county, Ga. July 2nd, 1856, and after thirteen weary months of
suffering, calmly fell asleep in Cherokee county, Ala., Nov. 29th, 1882.

She was greatly afflicted in her infancy; and it was only through the tender and
constant attention of an anxious and devoted mother that her life was prolonged
through the infantile period. But she grew to be a happy little girl,
notwithstanding the constitutional infirmatives, which it was her lot to endure
to the end of her life.

One of her misfortunes was a defective vision, which prevented her from
receiving anything more than a very imperfect educasion (sic). She would only
read a little with the aid of glasses, and seldom attempted to read anything but
her little Sunday school paper and her Bible. She always delighted in the
Sunday schools, and generally knew her lessons, which her step-mother patiently
taught her; and the Bible was her constant companion in all her moments of
leisure. She would often read it with strained eyes, until they would become so
filled with tears that she would be compelled to desist.

At the age of fifteen she professed the religion of the Lord Jesus Christ, and
joined the church of her own accord, no one having ever said a single word to
influence her conduct in that matter. Here was a beautiful and child-like
faith, which was exemplified in her daily walk and conversation. The
distinguishing traits of her character were INDUSTRY and unselfish devotion to
the good of others. She loved to be employed, and was always happiest when she
was the most busy. Her face was always bright when she had something to do; and
she was always delighted when she felt that she was doing something that would
promote the pleasure or profit of others. She was a useful member of the family
of the household and did much to relieve her step-mother, whom she fondly loved,
of her family burdens and cares. She was always the kind and sympathizing
friend and comforter of her little brothers and sisters, whose wants and whims
she tried to gratify and indulge by day and by night. But she is gone to the
grave, and we shall see her no more, until "all that are in their graves, shall
hear the voice of the Son of God, and shall come forth." We shall see her then.
We shall meet her in "the Sweet by and by," "when God shall wipe away all tears
from all eyes, and there shall be no more death."

She lived unknown, and few could know
When Mary ceased to be;
But she is in her grave, and oh!
The difference it is to me!
