The Cherokee Advance Friday 17 Sept 1886 p 3
On Friday last the remains of Edward Barton were consigned to the grave. A
very touching and beautiful sermon was preached by Rev. A. B. Vaughn at the
Methodist church to a large concourse of weeping, sorrowing relatives and
friends of the deceased. Ed. was in the turn of his 23rd year, a member of
the Baptist church, and a young man of fine promise and exemplary character.
Although warned of his death by only a few days sickness, he expressed a
willingness to go, and felt that his would be a joyous, triumphant entrance
through the pearly gates into Heaven. He leaves to mourn his death, besides a
mother, father, sisters, brothers and relatives and friends, a young wife, to
whom he was married last January, who will more sadly miss her stay, support
and comfort--will feel more keenly this sad blow, than any of the others, and
to her especially would we tender our sympathies. But she has a blessed
promise that there is One who will be a husband to the widow. However sad may
be the death, we have hopes and assurances that his soul is now numbered with
the blessed, and in this he is better off than we. Let us hope and strive to
meet him in that better world beyond.
