The Cherokee Advance (Canton, Ga.) Friday 31 Dec 1886 p 3
A Happy Marriage
The parlors of the McAfee house were enlivened Thursday evening, December
23rd, 1886, by a happy throng of merry people, assembled witness the marriage
of Mr. Joseph B. Hawkins, of Woodstock to Miss Nannie W. Hammond, of this
place. At 7:30 o'clock, p.m., the contracting couple entered the parlor,
accompanied by their attendants, Miss Jennie Hammond, sister of the bride, and
Miss Fannie Teasley, of Canton, and Messrs. Sam DuPre and Sanford Barnes, of
Woodstock, preceded by Miss Agnes Teasley, who, after seating herself to the
organ, played softly and sweetly one of Mendelsshons (sic) favorite wedding
marches. The happy pair were confronted by Rev. C. M. McClure, who, in his
most solemn and impressive, manner, performed the ceremony which linked more
closely together the lives of the twain and made them one. The ceremony being
ended, the newly made man and wife were overwhelmed with congratulations and
good wishes for their future happiness and prosperity. Then came the "colored
brother" bearing heavily laden waiters of a variety of the richest cakes,
ambrosia and other sweet and delicious viands and refreshments which were
greatly enjoyed and appreciated. The groom is the son of Rev. W. W. Hawkins,
of this county, and is a young man of fine business qualifications and
promising future, while the bride is a lovely young lady of sweet disposition
and amiable character. They spent their honey-moon and Christmas holidays
with their parents and friends at Woodstock. They will probably go to
Birmingham or Sheffield, Ala., where Mr. Hawkins will engage in business.
Among the invited guests from a distance, we noticed Misses Lizzie Dial,
Carrie Haney, May Hawkins, Alice DuPre, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Hammond, Messrs. W.
L. DuPre, and Rev. W. W. Hawkins, of Woodstock; Miss Lena Lathem, of Hickory
Flat: Mr. Mrs. (sic) and Miss Starr, of Savannah; and Mr. V. T. Stephens, of
Heard county. Several of Canton's citizens were invited guests also.
