DIXON, Nannie Ellen (Berry)

1857-1943

Mrs. Nannie Ellen Dixon, 85, died Jan 11 at the home of a daughter in Pikeville.
Mrs. Dixon, the daughter of Alfred and Hannah Miller Berry, was born in Lawrence
County, KY in 1857. She was one of ten children, all of which preceded her in
death, except one brother, James Berry of Yatesville, KY. She was married to W.
O. B. Dixon of Paintsville in 1876. To this union 2 children were born, Mrs. C.
Norah Thornbury Hopkins of Pikeville. Mrs. Lorah Holbrook of Chesapeake, OH.
Besides these 2 daughters, and 1 brother, she was survived by 14 grandchildren,
20 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. At the age 17 she gave her
heart to God under the preaching of the great pioneer preacher, Rev. Alfred
Lunsford of Ohio. Rev. Lunsford was one the first, if not the first Christian
preacher in the Eastern part of Kentucky. Mrs. Dixon was baptized by this
pioneer minister in the waters of Blaine Creek, Lawrence county, KY when ice was
on the water. At the death of her husband, 23 years ago, she moved to Pikeville,
and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. Nora Thornbury Hopkins. the funeral
services were held Jan 12 in the Christian Church and were conducted by Rev. T.
B. Ashley assisted by Rev. Beckett and Rev. Howerton. There was a large group of
friends and relatives present to honor the memory of Mrs. Dixon and the floral
tributes were profuse and beautiful. The music by the Christian Church Choir was
most consoling. Big Sandy News, Jan 29, 1943
