BURTON, Samuel H.

1854-1938

Samuel H. Burton, 84, well known farmer of the Brushy section near Blaine, and 
one time county official, died Sunday evening at 8:30 at his home. Although he 
had been in failing health for a year, he had been seriously ill only 3 weeks. 
He was born on Rich Creek in 1854, a son of the late Jacob F. and Phoebe Carter 
Burton. His father was a native of Virginia, coming to this county when a young 
man. Deceased was a member of Jake Rice Masonic Lodge of Blaine and a member of 
the Methodist Protestant Church. Mr. Burton was elected county judge of Lawrence 
County in 1885 and served from 1886 until 1890. Early in the 1900's he served as 
sheriff of the county also. The present county jail was built during his tenure 
as county judge. Surviving Mr. Burton is his aged wife, Mrs. Ella Marie York 
Burton. They had been married 61 years. Other survivors are 3 daughters, Mrs. 
Lillie Sturgell and Mrs. Green Wellman of Ashland, KY, and Mrs. Lon Hewlette of 
Blaine, 3 sons, L. A. Burton, cashier of the Bank of Blaine, Blaine, KY, Dr. C. 
C. Burton of West Liberty, KY, and Frank Burton of Hamden, OH; and 2 sisters, 
Mrs. Harrison Wilson of Louisa, route 1 and Mrs. William Jordan of Beaver, OH. 
Funeral was conducted Tuesday morning at the home with Rev. Charles W. Moore of 
Adams, officiating, and interment was made in the Burton family cemetery on Rich 
Creek with the Jake Rice Masonic Lodge conducting their ritual. Big Sandy News,
