Funeral services for J. D. Ball, 80, retired farmer who died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday 
morning at his home in Mattie following a year's illness, were held at 1 p.m. 
Tuesday afternoon at the Cando Church at Mattie with the Rev. William W. Moore 
and the Rev. Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery under 
the direction of the Young Funeral Home. Son of the late Greenville and Fanny 
Thompson Ball, he was born at Mattie and lived there all his life. He was a 
member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He was married to Molly Moore in 1893. He 
is survived by his wife, 1 daughter, Mrs. W. A. Hayes of Louisa and a sister, 
Mrs. Rhoda Wheeler of Blaine. Big Sandy News, Oct 28, 1948
