Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, 9 Apr 1943: 
"John J. Carney, Sr., 78, 878 Maryland avenue, retired Baltimore 
and Ohio Railroad engineer, died last night at his home from the 
effects of a fall on the stairs ten days ago.  A native of 
Bloomington, Mr. Carney was a son of the late Darby and Bridget 
(Reddington) Carney.  He came to Cumberland thirty five years ago.  
Mr. Carney retired ten years ago after serving as a passenger and 
freight engineer on the B. and O. for fifty years.  He operated 
on the Cumberland division between this city and Grafton, W. Va.  
Early in his career Mr. Carney was local chairman of the 
Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers. He was a member 
of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, St. Mary's Catholic 
Church and the Holy Name Society.  Besides his widow, Mrs. Helena 
(Keenan) Carney, he is survived by one son, J. Joseph Carney, Jr., 
Cumberland; three daughters, Mrs. Guy Ziler, Cumberland; Misses 
Louise and Loretta Carney, at home; one sister, Mrs. Joseph P. 
Carbine, Cumberland, and nine grandchildren, all of Cumberland.  
A nephew, Father Michael Kenneth Carney, St. John's Catholic 
Church, Baltimore, also surviving."
