The Cumberland Evening Times 27 Apr 1959

 MIDLAND-William J. Canty, 83, retired miner, died Saturday night in 
Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.  He was a native of Westernport, a son 
of the late Michael and Catherine (McPartland) Canty.  His wife, Mrs. 
Elizabeth (Cavanaugh) Canty, preceded him in death.  Surviving are 
three daughters, Mrs. Isaac Stakem, of here, with whom he made his 
home; Mrs. James Fair, also of Midland, and Mrs. William Woods 
Alexandria, Va.; one son, Michael Canty, Washington, a brother, Owen 
Canty, Washington, 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.  He 
was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society.  
The body is at the Eichorn Funeral Home, Lonaconing, where the Rosary 
will be recited today at 8 p.m.  A funeral service will be conducted 
tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church.  Rev. John Sleeman, 
pastor, will officiate and burial will be in Belvedere Cemetery here.
Pallbearers will be Gorman Robertson, Frank Stakem, Thomas Stakem, 
Hugh Coleman, Paul Cordial and John Hallern.
