"Cumberland Evening Times" Cumberland, Maryland, Thursday 21 Apr 1949: 
"John F. Byrnes, 65, died early this morning at Miner's Hospital, Frostburg, 
following a lingering illness. A former coal miner, Mr. Byres at one time was 
the president of Local 2835, United Mine Workers of America. He attended St. 
Mary's Church and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He is survived by 
his wife, Mrs. Clara (Mills) Byrnes; two sons, Alphonsus and DeSales Byrnes, 
and a daughter, Mrs. Marie Woods, all at home; three brothers, Walter Byrnes, 
Swissville, Pa.; Michael Byrnes, Cumberland, and Thomas Byrnes, Wilkinsburg, 
Pa., and three grandchildren also survive. A requiem mass will be celebrated 
at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church by Rev. Charles W. Bogan, pastor. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery."
