"The Herald" Piedmont, West Virginia, Thursday 18 May 1930:
"Former Westernport Man Killed In Mine-James P. Brown Crushed To Death By Falling
Timber Near Morgantown-James P. Brown, 47 years old, former resident of Westernport,
was instantly killed at 10:45 o'clock Sunday morning, when he was pinioned under
falling timber in the Brock mine of the Continental Coal Company, in the Scott's Run
field near Morgantown, W. Va. Brown, a foreman and expert timberman, went into the
mine with three other men, to supervise the removal of timber in a section which had
been closed. They were about three fourths of a mile from the shaft when the roof
timbers fell. Brown's neck was broken and he was crushed about the chest. His
companions, who were not injured, extricated the body. The mishap victim had been
engaged in mining work about thirty years and was located in Frostburg and Westernport
before he moved to Westover, a suburb of Morgantown, several years ago. Mr. Brown is
survived by his widow, Mrs. Ethel Brown, a native of Frostburg, and by four daughters,
Misses Mary, Julia, and Jean, at home, and Mrs. Edwin Frita, Washington, D.C. He also
leaves his mother, Mrs. P.H. Brown, of Monrovia, Md.; five brothers and one sister,
Harry, of New York City; Leo P., of Cumberland; Bernard, of Phillipsburg, Pa.; Frank,
of Edgar, Montana; William, of Jenkins, Ky., and Mrs. Aubrey Davis, of Monrovia. The
funeral service was held Tuesday morning at St. Frances de Sales Roman Catholic church,
Morgantown, with the Rev. Peter Flynn, officiating. Burial was in the East Oak Grove
Cemetery, Morgantown."
