"The Piedmont Herald" Thursday 15 Mar 1934: 
"Mr. Joseph Brophy, aged 38 years, former resident of Westernport, died Sunday 
night at Martinsburg from inquires sustained in an automobile accident on the 
previous evening. He was en route home from a stone quarry where he was employed 
as foreman when his car skidded and crashed into a tree. Brophy was well known 
in this section as an athlete. He first came into prominence in 1912-13 with 
the athletics teams of Beall High School. In 1915 he played with the George's 
Creek Baseball League and in following years played with other minor leagues. 
At different times he has played with Cumberland, Fairmont, Chambersburg and 
Martinsburg teams. Before going to Martinsburg about fifteen years ago, he 
resided in Westernport. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Brown, of 
Martinsburg, and two children, Joseph, Jr., aged 11, and Frances, aged 3 years. 
Funeral services were held yesterday morning in Martinsburg."
