The Herald, Piedmont, West Virginia, Fri 3 Aug 1928: 
"Union Veteran Dead--Gilbert Broadwater, 87 years old, who 
served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865 in Company D., 
Second Maryland Infantry, was found dead in bed at his home 
at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning.  Mr. Broadwater had been 
confined to his bed for about a year and death was due to 
senile decay.  From Barton about 100 or more men went to 
the Union Army.  He is the last survivor with one execption, 
Hon. Hames Campbell, former member of the Maryland General 
Assembly, now a doorkeeper of the House of Representatives 
at Washington, who is still active.  Mr. Broadwater was a 
blacksmith in his active days.  He is survived by his wife, 
Mary Ann Broadwater, two sons, Howard and Albert, of Akron, 
Ohio, and two daughters, Irene and Myra, at home.  The 
funeral was held at the Methodist Eposcipal Church Thursday 
aat 2 p.m., Rev. Paul Harris officiating.  Interment was at 
Allegany Cemetery, Frostburg."
