Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, Fri 26 Nov 1954:
"Retired Coal Miner Fatally Hurt By Auto-Samuel Anthony Bean Dies
In Hospital As Result Of Injuries-Returning with ice cream for his
grandchildren, a 65-year-old Barton man was fatally injured on State
Route 36 in Barton Wednesday night near his home. Samuel Anthony
Bean, who retired in June after working with the Shuhart Coal Company
in Barton, died early yesterday morning in Miners Hospital, Frostburg.
He was struck by an auto driven by Donald Lawrence Hawn of RD 1,
Frostburg, who had been discharged from the Army at Fort Meade
Wednesday at 4 p. m. Going Out Of Way Oddly enough, Hawn at the time
of the accident was going out of way to take a companion, Charles
Morris, also discharged at the same time, to his home in Westernport.
Hawn told County Investigator Edwin R. Lilya and State Trooper Harry
Bosley, who are conducting the probe, thnt he rounded the sharp curve
in the west limits of Barton and saw Bean crossing the highway. Hawn
told investigators he swerved to try to avoid hitting Bean, but was
not successful. The car skidded on the wet highway into the
guardrails on the opposite side of the road, police said. Bean was
carried for a short distance by the Hawn auto. Hawn then stopped a
passing car, and had an ambulance and police summoned. He stayed at
the scene until Bean had been taken to the hospital and Trooper
Bosley had arrived, Lilya reported. Dies In Hospital Bean died
several hours later in Miners Hospital. He suffered a fractured
skull, fractured leg and internal injuries. Boan had been to a
confectionary in Barton and was returning with ice cream for his
grandchildren who were visiting his home. Lilya said the
investigation is continuing and no charges have been preferred. Hawn
and Morris were with Lilya and Bosley all morning at the state's
attorney's office. Born in Cross, W. Va., the victim was a son of
the late John F. and Sarah (Barnhill) Bean. He had resided in Barton
55 years. He was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Barton.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Carrie (Moffett) Bean, he is survived by four
sons, Samuel A. Bean Jr., and James Bean, Lonaconing; John Bean, with
the Air Force in Phoenix, Ariz., and Donald Bean, at home. He also
