Anniston Star June 15, 1955
A 28-year-old Clay County housewife is being held in Clay County jail today
awaiting a preliminary hearing on a first-degree murder charge. Sheriff Gilbert
said. Mrs. Annie Ray Carter Huling is accused of shooting and killing her
husband. Homer Carl Huling, early Sunday night following a day long arrangement.
Sheriff Gilbert said Mrs. Huling has requested preliminary hearing on the charge
and Circuit Solicitor W. C. Dempsey is making arrangements for the hearing. She
remains in tail and no bond has been set for her release. Gilbert said she has
not as yet employed an attorney. Funeral services for the 49-year-old farmer and
sawmill worker were held yesterday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank
Young of Bynum officiating. The fatal shooting took place at the couple's remote
country home five miles north of Delta and followed a disagreement between the
couple, Gilbert said. Mrs. Huling accused her husband of excessive drinking
during the day and said the argument started at the borne of Mr. Huling's son by
a previous marriage J. W. Huling.
Mrs. Huling claimed her husband tried to leave his son's home with his small
grandson and she went to the car telling him he was in no condition to drive the
car. After they returned to their home the argument perused and the blast of a
12-gauge single barrel shotgun brought Mrs. Dessie Carter, Mrs. Huling's sister-
in-law and nearest neighbor, running to the house. Mrs. Carter said she found
her sister-in-law "running around in circles and screaming and hollering for
help." "I don't know why I did it," Mrs. Huling was quoted as saying. Mr. and
Mrs. Huling had been married for eight years and had no children.

Additional Comments:
Note: Mrs. Huling was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 15 years in
prison.
