Lineville Headlight August 29, 1929
At the old homestead, three miles south of Delta, on Sunday, August 18, 1929,
the seven living children of the first family of Uncle Lon Cook and wife,
together with members of their families and friends met in happy family reunion
and enjoyed a most pleasant day. There were present the two sons, W.O. and A.T.
Cook, Delta, Alabama. These two sons live on the old home farm. Then the
daughters, Mrs. J.W. Thomas, Pisgah, Ala., Mrs. H C. Willingham, Alexander City,
Ala, Mrs. G.C. Garrett, Lineville, Ala. and Mrs. Jesse McKay, Pyriton, Ala Four
of the sons in-law were present, one daughter-in-law, 21 grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren. No one has ever lived on the Cook place but the
father, his family and now some of his children. Uncle Lon Cook cleared the
land, finished the house which had been started on when he bought the home
tract, added several tracts to the original eighty and lived and farmed on that
land until his sudden death near two years ago. The place yet shows, the
terraces and the general condition of the farm, shows that on Cook was a good
farmer. He made his living at home, he reared his children and taught them to be
good citizens, a very great work for any man to accomplish. The writer, by
previous engage had to leave soon after the dinner hour, but not until he had
enjoyed to the limit that bountiful spread "under the old oak tree" in the yard,
a white oak which has sacred memory to every child reared there. There were
quite a number of relatives, visitors and friends who enjoyed the day with the
family. We did not count the number resent, but when the excellent dinner was
spread, it looked like we had quite a large and active crowd. All demonstrating
that they were in good health. There was a well-arranged program carried out in
the afternoon. The scripture Reading was the 22nd. chapter of Proverb by W.O.
Cook, prayer was led by A.T. Cook, then a history of the home was given by H.C.
Willingham. Readings were given by Mrs. H.C. Willingham, Mr. Eral Graben, Mrs.
G.C. Garrett, Lera Cook and Mrs. John W. Character. Talks were then made by Rev.
W.R. Ingram, W.V. Pirkle, W.P. Cole, Mrs. J.W. Thomas, C.T. McKay, J.D. Shults,
S.J. Smith, and Rev. R.M. Allen. Then they had a song service, closing with the
song, "When We ALL Come Back Again." In all it was a Treat and enjoyable day for
the family and their friends. We commend this splendid family for their efforts.
We think such occasions are well worthwhile. We hope they may have many other
happy reunions. Their friend, John R. McCain.
