Native Virginian 27 November 1868
Dr. John Mayo, brother of Joseph Mayo, so long Mayor of Richmond, died in that
city on Saturday. Dr. Mayo was one of the best known men in Eastern Virginia. He
was remarkable for his devotion to the history and heroes of this State. And
carried his partiality for Virginia character and habits to the length of
preserving in his dress some mementos of the long past, and wore to the day of his
death the cocked hat. No man was better versed in Virginia history, or in the
pedigrees of all the old families in the State.
