Native Virginian 5 June 1868 June 5, 1868
A young girl from Buckingham co. named Emma C. Layne of respectable parentage,
attempted to kill herself in Baltimore, on Thursday last by taking laudanum. She
had been betrayed and deserted by a man named B.F. Cleveland, and had followed him
to Baltimore, for the purpose of compelling him to marry her. She arrived there on
Monday and had an interview with her betrayer, who had promised to marry her and
the same evening fled from the city. Thus deserted penniless among strangers, the
girl attempted to end her existance, but was saved by the active treatment of a
physician.
