Native Virginian 31 July 1868 July 31, 1868
Herndon Breaks Jail; -Our readers are aware that Herndon broke jail last
Saturday night, under cover of a great noise made by the "colored fraternity,"
who fired pistols, yelled and beat drums, very vigorously until a late hour that
night. We had made arrangements as we fondly fancied to place Herndon's
confession before our readers, but the party who promised to print it for us
failed to do so, As it is evidently a mass of lies, this Confession is of no
value except to gratify a morbid curiosity.

Herndon was seen near Mr. Robt. N. Frazier's on Monday Night. It is said he was
in search of food. He is too great a talker not to be caught, and his escape
together with his lying confession will go very hard with him when he is again
in custody. It remains to be seen what will be done by our county magistrates to
make the jail secure, and to prevent further disturbances of the peace and order
of our generally quiet little village.
