Native Virginian 27 March 1868
Negro Killed. -On Monday last, an altercation occurred in this place, which
resulted in the death of a negro man named Jack Jones. The perpetrator of the
deed, Mr. Robert Richardson, a very reputable and well-behaved citizen, was
formerly a tanner, and has for some time past been a tenant on Dr. panni;;'s
farm near Gordonsville. We tried in vain to get a straight and connected store
of the cause of the quarrel. The concurrent testimony, however, was that Mr.
Richardson acted in self-defence and stabbed the negro only after he had
received one or more terrible blows from a stick, which, as we hear, the negro
cut expressly for the purpose of making the assault,. The affair caused a deal
of excitement, and at one time a general row among the whites and blacks was
imminent. This was averted by the manly conduct of Col. Peyton Slaughter, who
singly confronted and kept back a crowd of some forty negroes who were in
pursuit of Mr. Richardson. Jack Jones or "Black Jack," as he was sometimes
called, was a desperado, a pestilent fellow, always in some row with whites or
with his own race. The morning of his death he was warned by Jim, a very worthy
man, who works at the Depot, that, unless he behaved himself, he would come to
some bad end. His loss will be regarded by both races as a positive benefit to
the community.
