CRUSHED IN A TUNNEL

On Saturday morning, a boy named Clarence ANDREWS, residing on
Fourteenth street, near Mulberry alley in the Ninth ward, attempted to
board the Cincinnati express on the Pan Handle road as it was nearing
the Try street tunnel near Second avenue in order to ride to the Union
Depot. The lad hung on the railings of the platform of a car, and as
the train entered the tunnel, he was thrown off and the train passed
over his legs, crushing them most horribly. The boy was picked up and
taken to Homeopathic Hospital, where he was attended to but he died
from his injuries the same evening. Coroner West was notified and
empaneled a jury, but adjourned the inquest till this evening at half
past seven o'clock at his office on Grant Street.

CLARENCE ANDREWS' DEATH

Last evening Coroner West concluded the inquest in the case of the
boy, Clarence ANDREWS, who was run over by the Cincinnati express at
the west end of the Try street tunnel of the Pan Handle Railroad, on
Saturday morning last. The conductor of the train, E M GATES, the
several brakemen and the baggage-master were all examined, but their
testimony showed the accident to have been accidental. John McCOY,
the boy who was on the car when ANDREWS was killed, testified that a
brakeman pushed him off, but the jury rendered a verdict of accidental
death.
