Kenneth R. Atherton

  Kenneth R. Atherton, 59, of RD1, Box 90, Mount Union, died at 8:15 
a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital. He 
died following a lengthy illness.
  Graveside services were held Feb. 26 at the Haven Rest Memorial Park, 
RD I Shirleysburg. A memorial service was held at Cedar Crest-Lucy 
Furnace Chapel, RD1 Mount Union, with Pastor Jeff Winstead officiating.
  Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Robert D. Heath 
Funeral Home, Mount Union.
  Born July 31, 1942 in Lucy Furnace, Wayne Township, he was the son of 
the late Roy James and Thelma Mae (Woodward) Atherton.
  He married Shelby J. (Price) Atherton on March 7, 1964. She survives 
at their home.
  He is also survived by two daughters, Holly J. Atherton of 
Germantown, Md., and Tracey L. Cook of Alexandria, and one 
granddaughter.
  Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Betty Myers, 
Hill Valley; Charlotte Jaymes, Silverford Heights; Bernice Winnick, 
Chambersburg; Vonney Hileman, Pittsburgh; Nancy Gerholt, RD1 Mount 
Union; Jerry Atherton, Benjamin Atherton, Tom Altherton, Lucy Furnace; 
Max Atherton, Hill Valley; Kathy Park, Silverford Heights; Trudy Myers, 
RD1 Mount Union; and Rick Atherton, Brad Atherton and Lori Rosensteel, 
all of Lucy Furnace.
  He was a member of Cedar Crest-Lucy Furnace Chapel.
  A 1960 graduate of Mount Union Area High School, he was a member and 
president of the United Paperworkers Local, the National Rifle 
Association and was a former member of the Huntingdon Moose Lodge.
  He served with the U. S. Army from May 1960 to May 1963.
  He retired on disability in September 1999 from Mead Corporation 
after 17 years of service. Prior to that he was employed by Gerbo 
Footwear in Huntingdon and Viscose Corporation in Lewistown.
  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
