JOHN D. APPLEBY

John Dorris Appleby, Justice of the Peace, of Dublin township, this county,
died Thursday morning August 21, at his home.
He was the second son of William and Elizabeth Appleby and was born
September 13, 1836, being therefore almost 82 years old. He lived his whole
life in Dublin township, and followed the carpenter trade for many years. He
married Rachel Bennett Harper, of the same township, during the Civil war.
They reared a family of sons and daughters, - Mrs. Dora Peterson, James A.
Appleby, both of Mt. Union; Miles, of Newton Hamilton; __ Speer (?) of
Altoona; and Janie, Mrs. David Cree, at home. He had been a member of the
Presbyterian church for sixty years. For many years he was the undertaker of
the Shade Gap community. He was elected a Justice of the Peace many years
ago and was kept in office until the end of his life. His wife died two
years ago, since which his daughter, Mrs. Cree, kept his home and tenderly
cared for him.
The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon, services at 3 o'clock,
followed by interment at Shade Gap.
