The Montgomery Advertiser January 31, 1906
Ashland. Feb. 1. (Special.) Late yesterday evening at the railroad camp of
Herring and Phillips on the grade of the A. B. and A. railroad three and a half
miles southeast of Lineville in this county. Robert R. Cook was shot and killed
by J. H. Herring on of the above name firm of contractors. From the accounts
given of the difficulty it seems that Cook went to the railroad camp, drunk and
flourished a big pistol and cursed the contractor, who succeeded in getting
Cook's pistol away from him. Soon afterwards, however, he drew his knife, so
this report goes. and declared he was going into the commissary; and attacked
Mr. Herring, who was in the commissary, who shot him, inflicted a wound from
which he died in about twenty minutes. Mr. Herring immediately came to Ashland
and surrendered to the sheriff, stating what he had done. He claims that he
fired in seif-defense. He has been in this section only a few months but has
made many friends here during that time. The deceased was born and reared in
this County and was a good-hearted generous man, his worst falling was that he
drank too much.
