Ashland Progress September 22, 1938
Tuesday night about 8 o'clock Miss Louie Pruet hearing a disturbance in her hen
house proceeded to investigate. She turned on the light on the back porch and
went into the nearby henhouse. She was met face to face by a negro man by the
name of Dol Henderson. Calling to a member of the family, Miss. Ruth Moon, to go
for help, the little lady walked out with a gun in hand stating she would shoot
the thief. The negro called on his feet to do their duty, and in an instant was
gone, minus the chicken, however, he was recognized by both Miss Pruet and Miss
Moon.
Sheriff Mayo was called and went to the home of Henderson and placed him under
arrest. Early Wednesday morning he entered a plea of guilty in Judge Thompson's
court and was sentenced to Kilby Prison for a year and a day. A few minutes
later a prison truck came along and took charge of the colored man who early,
Tuesday night had planned a feast of chicken for Wednesday.
